26 miles, 1700ft net elevation change. Egilsstaðir to Hengifoss.
Egilsstaðir is a great town, larger than the sleepy little places we’ve been staying recently, and just bustling / touristy enough to feel comfortable and exciting but not crowded.
This ride was to the end of lake Lagarfljót, home of my new second favorite cryptid, the Lagarfljót Wyrm. According to legend, it’s basically a gigantic black heath worm (heath worm being a delightful synonym for slug). Sadly we did NOT see the Wyrm - maybe tomorrow??
The hike to Hengifoss waterfall was fantastic even on a misty day like today. The stretch of water technically encompasses two waterfalls: Litlanesfoss (which flows down these stunning vertical basalt columns) and Hengifoss (a much taller one set against beautiful rock layers). The hike took us along the cliffs of the rocky gorge, the best kind of hike where there’s something new around every corner. And some sheep too.
