Cliff Edwards - When You Wish Upon a Star 1940
"When You Wish Upon a Star" is a song written by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington for the 1940 Disney animated film Pinocchio. It was sung by Cliff Edwards in the character of Jiminy Cricket, and is heard over the opening credits and in the final scene of the film. It won the 1940 Academy Award for Best Original Song, and was therefore the first Disney song to win an Oscar. "When You Wish Upon a Star" is widely considered as the signature song of The Walt Disney Company and is often used as such in the production logos at the beginning of many Disney films since the 1980s.
Harline and Washington delivered "When You Wish Upon a Star" to the Pinocchio story crew in early autumn 1938, and they recognized it right away as a spotlight song that should be given prominence in the film. Disney decided that the song should play over the opening credits, and used as a musical theme throughout the film. The Library of Congress deemed Edwards's recording of the song "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and inducted it into the National Recording Registry in 2009. The American Film Institute ranked "When You Wish Upon a Star" seventh in their 100 Greatest Songs in Film History, the highest ranked of only four Disney animated film songs to appear on the list.
In Japan, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark, the song has become a Christmas song. The song features in Disney's one-hour Christmas special From All of Us to All of You, originally broadcast in 1958 in the US, but now considered a Christmas tradition in the Nordic countries, where it is broadcast on Christmas Eve every year since 1959. 🎄⭐

What’s your dream ? Last night the stars were out again in Tulum. A few days of strong winds and clouds were now followed by a night of relatively low humidity in the air. The stars were out quite bright and the Milky Way When rose into the sky at 11:36 pm crossing the sky until 5:14 am. I have been spending quarantine time down here in tulum and took this photo last night. Stars have a special emotion they provoke inside of you as you gaze to the heavens. Ned Washington and Leigh Harline captured these sentiments best when they wrote : When you wish upon a star Makes no difference who you are Anything your heart desires Will come to you If your heart is in your dream No request is too extreme When you wish upon a star As dreamers do Like a bolt out of the blue Fate steps in and sees you through When you wish upon a star Your dreams come true you wish upon a star Makes no difference who you are Anything your heart desires Will come to you If your heart is in your dream No request is too extreme When you wish upon a star As dreamers do Like a bolt out of the blue Fate steps in and sees you through When you wish upon a star Your dreams come true @ahautulum #stars #starphotography #milkyway #tulum #tulummexico #tulumbeach #artwithme #artwithmegnp #wish #dream @artwithmetulum (at Ahau Tulum) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_DH-cXHJhl/?igshid=1dtyi3hyocm2h

Dragon It’s not my fault you didn’t read the fine print I came with a warning label shirt
“When You Wish Upon a Star,” Cliff Edwards (recorded 1938; released 1940) Cliff Edwards (“Ukulele Ike”) was an enormously popular singer in the 1920s and early 1930s. He was a star in vaudeville, musical comedy and early sound films, but his career was on the decline at the time he was chosen to voice Jiminy Cricket in Walt Disney's second animated feature, “Pinocchio.” He is now most remembered for the song “When You Wish Upon a Star.” The beauty of the composition, written by Ned Washington and Leigh Harline, and Edwards’ natural tenor and clear falsetto make the song a classic.

Brief Review: Arizona (1940)
Rated the film 2.5 stars out of 5. Though the three-person cinematography crew of Fayte M. Browne, Harry Hallenberger, and Joseph Walker make great use of the wide-open expanses of Arizonian landscape (though Walker really only did interiors), also incorporating some admirable camera movement and low-key lighting for certain scenes, the plot is fairly predictable and a bit drawn out for the 125-minute runtime. Jean Arthur displays another strong female character, but the chemistry with the much younger William Holden fails to spark, his consistent smouldered look towards the movie’s villain more believable. The film managed to earn two Oscar nominations in 1941, but typical for the era, there were several nominees in both its categories (Art Direction and Score), so the nominations seem a bit more suspect. That being said, the set designs by Lionel Banks and Robert Peterson are impressively detailed, so this Academy recognition feels earned but the score by Victor Young is mostly adequate. The composer surprisingly earning three nominations in the field of 17, though the Oscar-winning Pinocchio (Leigh Harline, Paul J. Smith, Ned Washington) as well as other nominees such as Rebecca (Franz Waxman), The Letter (Max Steiner), and The Thief of Bagdad (Miklós Rózsa) provide more prominent accents on their respective stories. Still, the Jean Arthur performance and the other aforementioned positives made this an appreciable viewing, but the likely intention of providing an epic about the titular U.S. state falls below expectations. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0032221/

Pinocchio
Pinocchio animation (1940), Disney's second feature-length animated film followed after the success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), and was produced during Disney's heyday from 1937-1942 of animated classics, along with Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941) and Bambi (1942). It became one of Disney's most enduring, mature and beautifully-imagined perfect works, in its coming-of-age story about a boy who overcame temptation and learned courage in the face of fear and danger.
The thrilling morality tale was adapted from the episodic 1883 serialized storyPinocchio: Tales of a Puppet (aka The Adventures of Pinocchio) by 19th century Italian author Carlo Collodi. It was the simple, yet sophisticated story of a kindly woodcarver/toymaker named Geppetto who carved a wooden puppet named Pinocchio. The name Pinocchio came from the Italian word "nocchio" which meant "a gnarl or knot in wood." After being brought to life as a lively puppet by a magical and angelic Blue Fairy, Pinocchio was challenged to become a real boy if he proved himself "brave, truthful, and unselfish." His conscience and wise friend for his journey of self-discovery was an impish cricket named Jiminy. [Note: "Jiminy Cricket(s)!" was originally an exclamation, and also an euphemistic expletive for "Jesus Christ!"]
His father/creator Geppetto's wishes eventually came true, after a series of sometimes terrifying and frightening adventures - he was assailed by grifters, caged, threatened with slave labor, transformed into a jackass (literally), swallowed by a giant whale, and almost drowned to death. The simple-minded wooden boy with an impetuous curiosity made some bad choices and faced the dire consequences when he was tempted with theatrical fame (as an actor for a puppeteer) and then unbridled hedonism. Pinocchio was locked in the puppet master's cage, and then sold to a child abductor on the debauched and nightmarish Pleasure Island who turned boys into donkeys to sell them. The amazing climax came when he was swallowed by a satanic black whale. He finally triumphed over fear and saved himself and his father.
The brilliantly-beautiful Technicolor film, animator regarded as the most technically-proficient of Disney's films, had remarkably detailed images for its serious, action-packed story. At times, comic relief was provided by the wisecracking character of Jiminy Cricket, who required 27 different color shades.
The RKO Radio Productions release was well-received by critics, although only moderately successful at the box-office, but then during its many subsequent theatrical re-releases (in 1945, 1954, 1962, 1971, 1978, 1984, and 1992), it performed very well. It was also released on VHS (and Beta) video in 1985, 1993, and 1999. And it first appeared on cable TV's The Disney Channel in Sept-Oct. 1986. This was the first Disney feature available on DVD - in 1999, and it was also released on Blu-Ray in 2009.
It became the first animated film to win an Academy Award in a competitive category - it actually won two awards in 1941 for its two nominations: Best Original Music Score, and Best Original Song ("When You Wish Upon a Star," music by Leigh Harline, and lyrics by Ned Washington). Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs had won an honorary Oscar presented two years earlier in 1939.
A few iconic moments have lived well beyond the film - desiring to grow up and become a real boy through one's own moral effort, 'wishing upon a star,' 'it makes no difference who you are,' letting one's conscience be one's guide, resisting temptation, following the straight and narrow path, and not telling lies (that causes one's nose to grow and grow). Other lessons learned are: judiciously choosing between right and wrong, not listening to strangers, avoiding bad company, peer pressure and worldly influences, not smoking (cigars) or drinking (beer), and not skipping one's education (the consequences are being imprisoned in a dead end job or suffering a life of manual labor).
The allegorical and richly-layered story was considered scarier for kids and more meaningful for mature audiences, especially in a few of its well-executed scenes (the entire Pleasure Island sequence and the terrifying conversion of red-headed Lampwick into a jackass, and the Monstro whale swallowing). The dark and frightening tone of Pinocchio has often been studied. Playboy Magazine (August 1993 edition), in a boxed section titled "Raw Data" on page 16, reported on the film in a brief blurb titled: "PINOCCH, WE NEVER KNEW YE." The magazine claimed: According to the Entertainment Research Report - a "family guide for movies":

Mission Completion
June 17, 2019
We did it!  Sixteen months later and we finally completed a goal that was years in the making.  And it surpassed all expectations!
We made it to Disney World!
I know, in the wake of beating cancer, small potatoes, right?  But not for me.  And not for my family.
We originally had our trip planned for May of 2018.  After the diagnosis in March, we knew there was no way we’d be able to pull that off, so we postponed. Finding a time to reschedule was tricky.  It was like a big puzzle, piecing together everyone’s schedules and commitments.  Between my older son’s school schedule, my younger son’s gymnastics competition schedule, my husband’s work, and my health, it seemed an impossible task.  But we landed on a date in December- a few weeks after my last chemo treatment, but before the holidays.
Then the choir recital popped up. And another gymnastics competition. And did I really want to take this trip so close to finishing chemo?  Intuitively, I knew it was not the best time, but I also knew that broaching this with my husband would send him into a tailspin. Sure, he wanted to take the trip at an optimal time, but in his mind postponing translated to canceling.
I shared my rationale behind pushing the dates of the trip with my husband and he begrudgingly agreed. I tried to lighten the blow by reassuring him that I’d already locked down an alternate date. We’d leave the day after my older son’s last day of school in June, which was also when my younger son was clear of competition season, and I would be strong and healthy. But that seemed like and eternity away and I saw the doubt in my husband’s face.  He was defeated.  His doubt just made me more determined to make this trip happen.
Fast forward to a few weeks before our trip.  My husband’s work had slowed to a snail’s pace.  Discretionary income was limited, at best.  We had many late night discussions about the feasibility of taking such an exorbitant, indulgent trip at this time.  I was scared, but I didn’t budge.  I held our vision, strong and clear. I set intentions, I lived in the belief that the trip will unfold with grace and ease, and as I asked for assistance, it appeared.
The day had finally arrived.  For such a long time I’d had visions of the moment I would finally let go.  I pictured us seated on the plane, seat belts fastened, ready for takeoff!  I saw myself taking a deep breath and as I exhaled all the trials and tribulations of making the trip a success would be released  and I could sit back and enjoy the ride.
Spirit has a funny way of reminding us about being clear with our visions.
We all sat on the plane, seat belts buckled, ready to take off. I was just about to let out that big breath when the captain announced that when we were pushed back from the gate, the plane’s front tire had been damaged. We were all asked to exit the plane so that the pilot and mechanics could determine next steps. OK, not the optimal way to start a trip, and I must admit, I was feeling a little uneasy. But I kept telling myself it was just a small little hitch in the plans.  So we grabbed some pizza and enjoyed a nice meal in the terminal…until my husband bit into something and a big ‘ole honking piece of his tooth came right off.  Yeh.
I felt a moment of overwhelm and sadness as I was being pulled down with the fear that our long-awaited trip was now in jeopardy.  But lately I’ve been doing a lot of energy work and I was immediately aware of a choice available to me.  I could succumb to the negative energy of the situation and follow in an old pattern, or I could tune in to that heightened energy of hope and trust, knowing that not matter what unfolded, it was all going to be just fine.  I centered myself, acknowledged the old programing, (sent a couple texts to family members for support) and promptly re-programed myself to the positive. I used some of the tools I’ve been learning about raising our energy and tapping into the unknown future and I allowed myself to be pulled right back up. Not to be deterred, I held on to my vision. Only this time, I included the vision of us enjoying ourselves in the theme parks!
Eventually, we were all told to re-board the plane.  My husband’s tooth was jagged, but not painful.  We could do this!  Our seat belts were buckled, we took off, and I had a long, joyful sigh of relief.
On our first day in the Magic Kingdom, I stopped to get a celebratory pin.  Disney World offers pins for people celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, but they also have blank pins to fill in other things you may be celebrating. I wrote one for myself:  I’m Celebrating Beating Cancer.  I wore that pin with such pride through our entire experience.  It became a symbol, marking the end of what was a very tough year, reminding me how very much we have to celebrate, every. single. day.
We’ve been home from the trip for about a week now and it kind of feels like it was all a dream.  Our vacation was perfect in every single way.  Sure, it was ninety degrees, sticky and hot every day.  Sure there were meltdowns. But through it all, I felt myself lifting and experienced things differently than I had in the past.  My positive visions continued to pull us forward through any perceived challenge.  If I felt the tug pulling me down, I reset myself.  I chose not to indulge in conflict. I chose joy.  I chose happiness.  It’s almost like I could physically see the different choices I had to make in each situation and with the power of strong intention and some of the new skills I’m learning, I chose my experience.  It was amazing.
It occurred to me that I may be experiencing some of the whole ‘new lease on life’ thing that people talk about when they’ve survived something that threatened their life. I’d imagined survivors singing along with the birds and walking with a spring in their step; that they experienced unending joy and delight every moment of the day.
Maybe some survivors do have that experience, but it’s different for me. I don’t feel an elated  appreciation for life every moment of the day. But I am experiencing feelings in a much more heightened, vivid manner. I had more moments of intense happiness and joy in those few days at the theme parks than I’ve had in a long while.  And on more than one occasion, I found myself weeping, the kind of weeping I just can’t control, as a result. Watching my boys play in the rain storm, seeing a child sleep in their parent’s arms, eating a soft serve ice cream cone, watching the fireworks as they sync up with music and a message that encourages us to believe.  I mean, what could be better than that?
We’re back to reality now. No more Mickey to remind me to believe. And as I feel the heat of summer slowly descending, I also feel myself being pulled downward. But that’s ok.  I’ve got my own internal song playing every day, reminding me that anything is possible.
My job is to simply listen closely, hold a clear vision, be kind and compassionate, remind myself that I have the gift of choice and trust that it’s all unfolding perfectly. And love, love, love that I get to be here to experience it all!
In loving,
Sarah

When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do
Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of their secret longing
Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true.”
