Top 5 tales of villains/antagonists!
It's funny... I still haven't played every Tales Of game but most of the villains have just had an "...eh." effect on me. There are some that I like though.
1 - Gaius from Xillia. Ngl, he arguably had more understandable motives that the party did, especially since he's king and feels it's his duty to protect his people. And I also like how he's a man of his word and allows Jude and Milla to join the worlds together and then in Xillia 2 works his hardest to maintain peace between the two lands.
2 - Artorius Collbrande from Berseria. I hated this guy at the beginning, but at the end? I was blown away by how well written he is. Like, this man lost everything that was dear to him and then had the duty of protecting the whole world from malevolence, something that exists within everyone, thrust upon him. It's completely understandable that he'd go as far as erasing emotions. I also love the final exchange between him and Velvet where he admits that if it had been Velvet and Laphi that died that night instead of Celica and their unborn child, he probably never would have done this and Velvet agrees. I love how it shows that they were family once, and a piece of that bond remains, despite everything. He's just really, really well written...
3 - Richter Abend from Symphonia: Dawn Of The New World. I love how his motives are mix of saving the world and getting revenge. Plus, I love how complicated his feelings regarding Emil are. I mean, Emil is his own person but has the appearance of Richter's dead best friend and is also possessed by Ratatosk, the one who murdered said best friend. So, yeah, quite complicated.
4 - Duke Pantarei from Vesperia. Again, understandable motives. It's been a while since I've watched the ending sections of Vesperia but I remember it's along the lines of "You're killing this world with the blastia but you're so dependent on them that I know you'll never give them up, so I have to take matters into my own hands."
5 - Van Grants from Abyss. I hate this man. I hate him so, so much. But he is one of the most understandable villains I've seen in the series so far. I mean, the entire world follows their lives as written in Yulia's Score and never dare to differentiate from it, even when catastrophic events occur. So when his homeland is wiped out and the rest of the world reacts with "It was destined to happen, it was written in the score." Of course he's going to set out to destroy the damn thing.

I am so intrigued w how they've written Emil so far cause like there is something clearly off about him but like,, I don't think Emil realizes it?? Like characters wouldn't recognize him when they should, or he wouldn't remember meeting someone who remembers him, and instead of being concerned he just assumes he was not very memorable or didnt remember right,,
Something is going on w him and I really wanna find out.
