Melbourne’s Kult Kyss is utterly captivating on their new single Be Cool, which comes as no surprise to us considering our persistent penchant for the pair’s dark, edgy electronica and electropop over the last few years. Be Cool, the latest in their string of hypnotic singles, explores the spaces that form between people in love, and the desire to reconnect, repair and rectify things with one another. The song is about the need to be close with someone and provide a source of comfort, freedom and relief; an oasis. Driving beats and a slightly acidic contour pull us in deep into this utterly immersive anthem, which was co-produced alongside Cam Bluff (Amy Shark, Allday, Illy). Kult Kyss states: "In creating the track we wanted to strike a sonic balance between the modern and retrospective sounds of UK house music, drawing influences from artists like Jamie XX and Bicep, with throwbacks to the synthesised trance throbs of the ‘90s." It’s no secret that I love dark, edgy electronic pop, nor is it covert intelligence when it comes to our ever blooming love for Melbourne’s Kult Kyss, whose music oft reminds us of forward-thinking creatives like The Knife, Fever Ray, Kate Boy, Elliphant, and other similar sharp serrated electronica/pop acts. So we’re more than overjoyed that the Australian duo have chosen to close out the year with a brand new single named EKKO after singing to Risqué Music. The track melds Haxx’s glistening production and pulsing beats with Rromarin’s glacial vocal sound, resulting in a restlessly glistering, capriciously exotic electronic listen. Rromarin explains the meaning behind ‘EKKO’: “In creating EKKO we wanted to capture the magic of human connectivity and shared freedom, and the result is our most upbeat and vivid work to date. The song is designed to convey the spirit of a human collective, which we explored through the use of chanting group vocals, euphoric synth lines and a driving breakbeat to act as the heart of the track.” Stream/download EKKO, here, as we look ahead to whatever Kult Kyss has in store for us in 2019 with unbridled glee.
