By • Olalekan Fagbade Medical Doctor kidnapped by gunmen - NMA raisesthe alarm Suspected kidnappers have abducted a medical doctor, Austin Uwumagbe, the Director of Victory Hospital-Annex at Ogaminana, Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State. Daily Trust reported that Dr Uwumagbe was last seen on Tuesday after he closed from work and headed home. A source from the hospital said that his abductors have reached out to his family, demanding a huge sum of money before he can regain his freedom. Kogi State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) confirmed the abduction of Dr Uwumagbe in a statement issued in Lokoja yesterday. A joint statement signed by the state NMA Chairman, Dr Baoku Olusola, and Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Bola Jonah, said their colleague was kidnapped shortly after leaving his hospital on Tuesday. “He was said to have been abducted with his car, an ash coloured 406 Peugeot with Registration number DAV 561 AA, at about 8:30pm on Tuesday,” the NMA said in the statement. While the NMA condemned the act and demanded for the immediate release of their kidnapped member, the body called on the security agencies to, as a matter of urgency, take action for their member to regain his freedom. The Kogi State police command’s spokesman, William Aya, did not respond to a text message and call to that effect. #MedicalDoctorkidnappedbygunmen

Kogi pupils who built electric tricycle, SUV bag scholarships
Tumblr media
The management of the Korea-Nigeria Friendship Institute of Vocational and Advanced Technology, Lokoja, has offered full scholarships to three pupils who built a sport utility vehicle at an exhibition. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the beneficiaries of the scholarships are pupils of St. Peter’s College, Idah, who recently wrote their Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations. The pupils — Samson Emeje, 29; Yusuf Ayuba, 20; and Tenimu Abubakar, 18 — had invented and exhibited an electrically-powered tricycle and SUV at the 2021 and 2022 STETSCOM Science Exhibition. Presenting the admission letters to the pupils on Wednesday, the Rector of the institute, Williams Charles, said that they had exhibited rare technical skills and deserved to be aided in advancing their talents in order to be useful to society. Charles said that the institute had been recognised globally for manpower training in advancing science and technology, thus contributing to the growth and development of the state. He said that the institute’s management was moved into action by the feat displayed by the pupils at the 2021 and 2022 STETSCOM Science Exhibition by inventing an electrically-powered tricycle and SUV. The rector praised the pupils for showing their innovative skills by using locally-sourced materials, stressing that people with creative minds were special humans for their abilities to put things on paper and translate them into reality. While commending Gov. Yahaya Bello for his unflinching commitment to the institute, he appealed for more support in order to meet the demands of the forthcoming resource inspection by the National Board for Technical Education. Charles called on politicians, corporate organisations and the government to beam their searchlights on young people with natural skills like the three pupils to afford them the opportunity to undertake the life transformation courses being offered by the institute. One of the beneficiaries, Emeje, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, thanked the rector for the gesture, saying that studying at the institute was a dream come true. Emeje, who attributed the talent to God, said that he got the inspiration from his childhood and that he had often constructed such innovations with ease. He thanked the management of NKFI for the scholarships and for giving them the opportunity to realise their dreams. On his part, the Principal of the college, Mr Zakari Jonah, commended the institute for the scholarship, promising to create awareness among secondary school students to embrace the institute to further their academic pursuits. Jonah implored governments at all levels to go to the grassroots to identify talents and develop them through technical and vocational education in order to make them self-reliant. Nigerian Man Sues AEDC, Demands N50 Million Over Billing Blunders
Tumblr media
A Nigerian man, Ugochukwu Orakwue, a resident of Kogi state, has taken a bold step by filing a lawsuit against the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), seeking N50 million in general damages. The legal action, lodged at the High Court II in Lokoja and presented to Justice Nicodemus Auwalu, alleges that the AEDC engaged in erroneous billing practices, causing financial distress and violating regulatory guidelines. Orakwue contends that the AEDC deliberately and inaccurately billed him for electricity, opting for inflated estimated bills instead of reading his Postpaid Meter. The plaintiff's originating summon urges the court to intervene, issuing an order to restrain the AEDC from persisting in issuing electricity bills based on estimation. Orakwue insists that the bills should accurately reflect the readings from his postpaid meter. Central to the lawsuit is the demand for a declaration that the AEDC's practice of billing based on estimation, rather than meter readings, infringes on the regulations established by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). Orakwue asserts that such actions by the AEDC are illegal, null, and void. The lawsuit outlines key declarations sought by Orakwue, emphasizing the illegality of the AEDC's actions and the violation of regulatory norms. These include the nullification of electricity bills issued based on estimation, the assertion that the AEDC concealed the claimant's metered status, and the demand for a refund of N25,000 and a N3,000 reconnection fee collected coercively by the AEDC. During a recent court hearing, the AEDC's counsel, Mr. G.D. Dubai, informed the court that discussions had commenced with the claimant to explore an out-of-court settlement. Dubai conveyed that many of the raised issues had been forwarded to the AEDC's headquarters in Abuja for consideration. Acknowledging the ongoing discussions, the court decided to adjourn the case to February 22, awaiting a report on the progress of the settlement or, if necessary, the continuation of the hearing. The court's approach indicates a willingness to explore resolutions outside a full trial, encouraging a fair and just resolution to the dispute. Orakwue's legal action highlights the importance of holding utility companies accountable for fair and accurate billing practices, promoting adherence to regulatory guidelines, and ensuring consumer rights are protected. As this case unfolds, it draws attention to broader issues in the energy sector and the ongoing efforts to balance the interests of service providers and consumers in Nigeria. Read the full article

By • Olalekan Fagbade Kogi guber poll: Dont set the State on fire, accept defeat in good faith – Women, youths tell SDP Women and youth groups in Kogi on Saturday pleaded with the Governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alh. Muritala Yakubu-Ajaka to accept the result of the Nov. 11 governorship election in good faith. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the groups, who staged a rally round the streets of Lokoja metropolis carrying placards with various inscriptions, begged Yakubu-Ajaka and his supporters not to do anything that would set the state on fire. The groups said that Kogi belongs to all indigenes and residents alike irrespective of political, tribal or religious leanings, and must be cherished, nurtured and preserved, not to be burnt down. Mr John Dele, who spoke on behalf of the youth said nothing must be allowed to affect the peace being enjoyed in the state under the administration of Gov. Yahaya Bello. “Our joy is that the off-cycle governorship election was the freest and fairest in the history of our state. “We, therefore, urged aggrieved parties, who might still want to contest its outcome to go about it in line with laid down guidelines instead of harassing the electoral umpire and the opposition,” he said. Dele called on security agencies to rise to the occasion to maintain the existing peace in the state. He also urged the Governor-elect, Usman Ododo, to ensure that the incumbent’s legacies in the area of peace and security were sustained. He cautioned SDP and its supporters not to heat the polity unnecessarily with actions capable of burning down the state. “Elections have come and gone and someone has won. If you’re aggrieved, follow the right channel,” he said. Also speaking on behalf of the women, Ireti olukomogbon, said that the SDP candidate was trying to set the people against INEC with unfounded allegations. She said the governorship election in Kogi was free and fair and appealed to the SDP candidate and his supporters to embrace peace and work together with the candidate that won. “Kogi people have shown clearly that they stand with the Kogi Agenda with their votes. If you’re aggrieved, go to court the proper way. As for the youths and women demography, we will support Alh. Usman Ododo to succeed,” she said. Responding to the protest, Mr Isaiah Ijele, SDP Director of New Media, Muri/Sam Campaign Council, said the protests was stage-managed by APC against SDP and its governorship candidate. He denied the involvement of his party in any act of violence in the state as a fallout of the Nov. 11 governorship poll. “We, hereby, call for the arrest and prosecution of all those involved in the protests, inciting violence and making provocative statements,” he said.
