"THE GREATEST STONER/ GARAGE/ PSYCHEDELIC/ PUNK/ METAL BAND EVER. THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN HUGE."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on CD package design for the KYUSS/ QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE split release, artwork by the late, great Frank Kozik (1962-2023), issued under the legendary Man's Ruin Records (Man's Ruin MR 063) in 1997.
OVERVIEW: "Emerging wild-eyed and stoned from the desert surrounding Palm Springs, California, in 1992 with their classic second album "Blues for the Red Sun," KYUSS proceeded over the ensuing three years and through two further masterpieces to become the greatest stoner/ garage/ psychedelic/ punk/ metal band ever. They should have been huge.
But saddled with a record company that didn't have the first idea what to do with them, KYUSS only sold records to friends, family and a relatively minuscule band of diehard fans. So they split. Admittedley at a creative high point, but also at a time when they had so much to offer. This much is testified to by the first three tracks on "Queens of the Stone Age." Here are the last songs Kyuss recorded, all first released on a highly-prized 10-inch single and each encapsulating the hypnotic intensity and gargantuan blugeon the band summarily conjured up.
The first track is a frazzled eight-minute deconstruction of BLACK SABBATH's "Into the Void'. KYUSS remain one of the very few bands capable of doing Sabbath's black-hearted doom justice; accomplised in this instance by taking the original tracks prehistoric slurge of a riff and dragging it through a series of skewed rhythmic shifts and a long spaced-out jam.
Like all great bands, KYUSS' sound was utterly distinctive: essentially, Josh Homme's fuzzed-up guitar operating in tandem with Scott Reeder's monstrous bass rumble to create riffs that hit you with the force of a bulldozer to the chest, while singer John Garcia howled away impressively, and intermittently, over the top. All of this is contained in the two-part "Fatso Forgotso" -- a vast 10-minute expanse of soul-drenched, head-spinning rolling thunder.
The album is completed by three tracks from Homme's new band, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. These too are extraordinary. The music is still dense, trippy and relentlessly heavy, with an even more extreme psychedelic edge. On "If Only Everything" and "Born to Hula." Homme -' who also sings -- appears to be playing a sitar with a road drill, while the whacked-out instumental "Spiders and Vinegaroons" is clearly the work of a man who's imbibed a vast amount of mind-altering substances, and gone mad. We'll not see their like again."
-- "KERRANG!" (review by Paul Rees), published January 10th 1998.

REVIEW: Kyuss / Queens of the Stone Age (1997 split EP)
KYUSS / QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE – Kyuss / Queens of the Stone Age (1997 split Man’s Ruin EP) Sometimes, EPs are essential.  Even better:  an essential split EP, when you actually like both bands. Kyuss split in 1996, and guitarist Josh Homme was fast out of the gates with a new EP under the name Gammy Ray.  Another Gamma Ray from Germany sued, and so Homme changed the name to Queens of the Stone…

My thoughts on Pitchfork's 150 best albums of the 1990s; #90-#81
Reminder: three completely subjective criteria. 1: do I like it, yes or no? (Basically, is this for me?) 2: Would I recommend it to anyone, yes or no? (is this for anyone else?) and 3: Is it better than STPs "Core"? (The lowest bar. Few things are better than "Purple," but Core should absolutely be in the top 150, so that's the bar.)
90: Ghostface Killah: Ironman (1996). It was fine. Doesn't hit as hard as I wanted it to.
Like it: sure. Recommend: sure. Better than "Core": no.
89: Sonny Sharrock: Ask the Ages (1991). I'd heard of Sharrock, but never listened to a full album. I enjoyed it greatly. Very glad it was included. It is very tricky to compare against pretty much anything else on this list.
Like it: yes. Recommend: yes. Better than "Core": yes.
88: Sonic Youth: Goo (1990). This band never sounds like I think they're going to. I simultaneously don't get what all the fuss is about and understand why people who really like them like them.
Like it: yes. Recommend: no. Better than "Core": no.
87: DJ Screw: 3 ’N The Mornin’ Part Two (1996). Didn't love it. It was theoretically divided into separate pieces, but really sounded like one big DJ jam-session that went on way too long and lacked inspiration for most of it.
Like it: no. Recommend: no. Better than "Core": no.
86: Spiritualized: Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space (1997). Ahead of their time. In that, this album sounded like a movie soundtrack to a pretentious early-aughts movie, more than an album from 1997. It was crowded, far-out (for better or worse,) and deep (usually for worse.)
Like it: no. Recommend: no. Better than "Core": no.
85: Godspeed You! Black Emperor: F♯ A♯ ∞ (1997). Again, very soundtracky. It should have been nowhere near this list. It's not a "best album" album; it's a "album my weird friend left on repeat in college when he took a 6-hour nap one time and I varied between thinking it was cool and hating everything about my life because all that existed was the Sound" album.
Like it: no. Recommend: no. Better than "Core": no.
84: OutKast: ATLiens (1996). Friends, I don't want to hate on OutKast. So I won't. This isn't the best shit I've heard, but I liked it.
Like it: yes. Recommend: yes. Better than "Core": maybe.
83: Slint: Spiderland (1991). I don't know much about this band. Wikipedia claims they are seminal, which means...let me see here..."of, relating to, or consisting of seed or semen." Sure. I understood so little of the lyrics that I can't deny that may be accurate. Kyuss is better.
Like it: no. Recommend: no. Better than "Core": no.
82: The Chicks: Fly (1999). I'm no longer in high school. I no longer have to listen to country music so that I can have something to talk to my high school girlfriend about. And I no longer have to pretend any more. I am no longer surrounded by either A) people who think country music sucks or B) so-called 'purists' who think the Chicks aren't "real country." If those people are nearby, they can go to hell. The Chicks RULE. "Fly" RULES. And, while we're talking about it, "Wide Open Spaces" rules, too. (I'm not as familiar with the other albums.
Like it: yes. Recommend: yes. Better than "Core": yes.
91: Radiohead: The Bends (1995). I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I don't get Radiohead. So strongly do I NOT get them, I firmly believe that anyone who is obsessed with Radiohead (you know the type) is delusional. I'd say I don't hate them as much as Weezer. But I don't get them. You know those bands you love, and you've never been able to articulate why? It's just like...your molecules vibrate the right way when you hear them? I get the opposite of that with Radiohead. My molecules just tilt their little bonds and say "can we change it to something else"?
Like it: no. Recommend: no. Better than "Core": no.

@relaxvideobar www.relaxvideobar.com (at RELAX VIDEO BAR) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiHImfAMJNP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Behind The Album: Load/Reload
Metallica’s sixth and seventh studio albums were released in June 1996 and November 1997 respectively. The two albums can be taken into consideration as almost a double album as most of the songs on each album were all written around the same time. The records would see the band venture completely away from thrash metal into the realm of hard rock, blues, southern rock, and even country. A majority of Metallica’s loyal fan base would be completely alienated by the album and the new Metallica image brought out during its promotion. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich once again acted as the primary song writers for the record, which began at Ulrich’s house in California in 1994. They would bring in almost 30 demos to Plant Studios when recording began in 1995, so the decision was made to split it into two separate albums. The artist that influenced the songs on Load included Kyuss, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Primus, ZZ Top, Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Oasis, Alanis Morissette, and Garth Brooks. Lars would have this to say about the criticism towards their new musical direction. “This album and what we're doing with it – that, to me, is what Metallica are all about: exploring different things. The minute you stop exploring, then just sit down and fucking die.” For this album, Hetfield and Kirk Hammett began to experiment with blues style riffs and guitar styles, while Ulrich began to simplify his drumming style getting rid of the double bass drumming he had utilized on every album to date. Hetfield’s lyrics abandoned any consideration of politics or society at large, but instead became very personal about his depression and sadness regarding his late mother and Cliff Burton. Other tracks focus on his own depression in dealing with these issues. Metallica was trying to gain a looser vibe with the music on this record, so Hammett for the first time on an album played rhythm guitar. For this record itself, the run time comes in at almost 80 minutes making it the longest LP the band ever produced. They needed to cut out one minute of the “Outlaw Torn” in order for the cd to play correctly without skipping. The back cover of this album had this explanation on it: “When we were doing the final sequencing of the 'LOAD' album, the record company told us that we couldn't go a second past 78:59, or your CD's wouldn't play without potentially skipping. With our 14 songs, we were running about 30 seconds over, and something had to give, so the cool-ass jam at the end of 'Outlaw' got chopped.”
The cover of the album was a photograph created by Andres Serrano that combines bovine blood and his own semen in between two sheets of plexiglass called Semen and blood III. The album does not specifically name the photograph, but instead only refers to the photographer's name. James Hetfield hated the use of this picture as the cover. He would say, “Lars and Kirk were very into abstract art, pretending they were gay. I think they knew it bugged me. It was a statement around all that. I love art, but not for the sake of shocking others. I think the cover of Load was just a piss-take around all that. I just went along with the make-up and all of this crazy, stupid crap that they felt they needed to do.” The album also saw Metallica remake its logo, an alternative symbol the ninja star, cut their long hair short, dress in designer clothes, and wear eyeliner. Once again, Hetfield absolutely despised these changes to their brand and image. “Lars and Kirk drove on those records. The whole 'We need to reinvent ourselves' topic was up. Image is not an evil thing for me, but if the image is not you, then it doesn't make much sense. I think they were really after a U2 kind of vibe, Bono doing his alter ego. I couldn't get into it. The whole, 'Okay, now in this photoshoot we're going to be '70s glam rockers.' Like, what? I would say half – at least half – the pictures that were to be in the booklet, I yanked out. The whole cover thing, it went against what I was feeling.” The backlash from their fans was significant as they felt completely betrayed by the band's new image. Years would pass before they would gain the trust of the diehard fans once again.
Load would represent a commercial success for the band as it stayed number one on the Billboard 200 chart for four weeks. And in its first week, the band moved 680,000 copies, making for the most successful week in the band's history. The record would go on to be certified as five times platinum selling 5 million copies. The critics were mixed on the album noting the change to hard rock. Rolling Stone liked the record. "The foursome dams the bombast and chugs half-speed ahead, settling into a wholly magnetizing groove that bridges old-school biker rock and the doomier side of post-grunge '90s rock.” Melody Maker was not as enthusiastic about the record saying that there were moments on the album where you needed to ask the question, has Metallica gone soft? AllMusic found the record to be boring, the same song over and over, and poorly played. Lars Ulrich would say this about the mixed reviews towards the album. "With Load, it was disappointing that some people's reaction to the music was biased by how they dealt with the pictures – the hair and all that crap. People have come up to me years afterwards and said, 'I never gave the record a fair chance because I couldn't get beyond Jason Newsted wearing eyeliner.' But 'The Outlaw Torn', some of that shit is pretty fucking awesome."
The follow up album Reload would be released in November 1997 with similar commercial success as it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart selling 436,000 copies in its first week. This would be the last album that Jason Newsted would play on with the band. As noted previously, the original intention was to release the songs as a double album, but then it was decided that doing so many songs might have issues. Kirk Hammett would say this about the recording sessions with producer Bob Rock. “We were gonna do them both as a double album, but we didn't want to spend that long in the studio. Also, if we did a double album, it would have been a lot more material for people to digest, and some of it might have gotten lost in the shuffle." Reload became the first album that the band featured another singer as Marianne Faithfull lended her vocals to “The Memory Remains.” Once again, the band used a photograph from Andres Serrano mixing bovine blood and his semen. Critics for the most part liked the album, but they did note that the music seemed to be heavily influenced by southern rock. One of the big takeaways for some critics was the fact that Reload felt like the leftovers from the Load sessions. This also showed in the fact that the record was only certified platinum three times.

If You Run - The Desert Sessions Vol. 11
The Desert Sessions are a musical collective series, founded by Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age, Kyuss, Them Crooked Vultures, Eagles Of Death Metal).
It began in Rancho de la Luna in Joshua Tree, in August of 1997, and has included the collaboration of various artists and musicians (the list is way too big, so I'll just tag a few of them).
"At Desert Sessions, you play for the sake of music. That's why it's good for musicians. If someday that's not enough anymore, or that's not the reason behind you doing it—that's not your raison d'être—then a quick reminder like Desert Sessions can do so much for you, it's amazing. It's easy to forget that this all starts from playing in your garage and loving it."

The Peechess - “Moscow Woman” Flaming Burnout: An Estrus Benefit Compilation 1997 Garage Punk / Lo-Fi Rock / Noise Rock / Post-Punk
The Peechees were one of the Bay Area’s best garage punk bands from the mid-to-late 90s. Debuting in 1994 on the Olympia, Washington-based Kill Rock Stars (the year before the label blew up with Elliott Smith’s debut album and three years before Sleater-Kinney’s Dig Me Out), this quartet would release for other big west coast indie and punk labels of the 90s like Lookout Records and eventually the juggernaut Subpop. Their songs also landed on an assortment of indie comps, one of which was Flaming Burnout: An Estrus Benefit Compilation.
Estrus Records was a pretty big garage rock and punk label based in Bellingham, Washington, a town just south of the Canadian border. In early 1997, after the label was about to celebrate a decade of existence, their warehouse tragically burned to the ground and just about everything was lost. Fans, venues, and other labels decided to help out with benefit shows across the world from a bunch of U.S. cities to Tokyo to Stockholm. A San Francisco label called Man’s Ruin Records, who had put out releases from bands like Dwarves, Melvins, Kyuss, and Queens of the Stone Age, released Flaming Burnout. 100% of the profits made from sales of the comp went directly to Estrus to help them rebuild their warehouse and label. And on that comp is an exclusive Peechees track called “Moscow Woman”.
If you’re a Peechees head, you might know about their sweet punk tune “New Moscow Woman,” which appeared on their second and final album, 1997′s Games People Play. But “Moscow Woman” (not “New Moscow Woman”) is an entirely different song. Sounding drugged the hell out, the band mixes a heavy, cacophonously noisy, lo-fi, chainsaw-revving, post-punk sound with drowsy, overdriven-megaphone garage rock vocals. And while garage rock is adored for its raw lack of refinement and polish, this still manages to be unlike just about anything the Peechees ever released. It’s far beyond lack of polish. It’s a rust and mold-infested rot. And that’s not a bad thing, it’s just different for them. Hats off to bands branching out to new limits.
A rare and noisy late 90s garage punk tune that ended up being made for a good cause.
