“It can't be them!”
“The arrangement was to be here at nine with the vase.”
“It's nine, and they appear to have a vase-sized box.”
“Can you see these two killing Yelland?”
“Perhaps very slowly.”

In 1977, John Inman, then enjoying international fame as Mr Humphries in Are You Being Served?, was given his own star vehicle by Thames Television. He played Neville Sutcliffe, proprietor of a Blackpool fish and chip shop, who inherits an ailing rock confectionery factory from his estranged father.
Odd Man Out was written by Vince Powell (Love Thy Neighbour, Nearest and Dearest, Mind Your Language), and the humour was not exactly subtle; "How's yer rock, cock?" was the series catchphrase. Unusually for a sitcom, John Inman did a brief and sincere sign-off at the end of the credits, "Thanks ever so much for watching. Hope we'll see you next week."
Not even John Inman's undoubted talents and likeability, supported by Josephine Tewson and Peter Butterworth, could make much of it in the end, and it ran for only one series of seven episodes.
John Inman returned to Mr Humphries and Are You Being Served?, which ran until 1985, 70 episodes and one feature film, and became one of the BBC's most successful exports, gaining a huge following internationally, including in the US. There was a sequel, Grace and Favour, which ran over two series in 1992-93, with most of the surviving principal cast.
According to producer David Croft, when Are You Being Served? was commissioned in 1972, BBC management told him to get rid of the 'little poof'. Croft, who was famously loyal to his unofficial stock company, responded by saying that without John Inman, there would be no series at all.
John Inman passed away in 2007, aged 71.

TV Comedy Star Of ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ Was 91 –
British veteran comedy actress Josephine Tewson, who found her biggest success in her sixties starring in one of the 1990s’ biggest TV sitcoms, has died aged 91. Tewson was best known for playing Elizabeth, the livingonhernerves neighbour of Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances, from 1990 to 1995. But she appeared in a string of other shows too, such as Shelley with Hywel Bennet and No…

His Working Vacation
Odd Man Out (1977) is the first of two Britcoms starring John Inman that were produced while Are You Being Served? (his hit series) was on hiatus.* In the opener, “A Chip off the Old Block,” John is Neville, the owner of a fish and chip shop who inherits half of a hard candy factory from his now-dead father. After John, the most familiar faces in the cast (to me, anyway) are Josephine Tewson (Keeping Up Appearances) as Dorothy, Neville’s stepsister, and Vivienne Johnson (Are You Being Served?) as Marilyn, a factory worker. As a whole, the show has as much substance as the candy made at the factory. Even so, fans of John Inman and Britcoms will want to give it at least one look. (All seven episodes can be found online.)
* - The other is Take a Letter, Mr. Jones (1981).

Shelley 2.4
Plot-less. But intelligent, amusing and entertaining.
The first half is one long scene. A conversation. Nothing much happens.
The second half has two short scenes at the very end, but it is mainly another long scene. And nothing much happens here either.
But the conversation is interesting. Very interesting. Shelley is being his usual chatty self while Fran is trying to read a book (by George Orwell). Discussion turns to the baby, and then to the miracle of life itself. And, eventually, to the nature of reality and existence. Not your usual sitcom fare.
Things pick up considerably, after the commercial break, when the wonderful Josephine Tewson shows up as Mrs. Hawkins. Fran is way too nice, and far too patient with Shelley. Mrs. Hawkins makes a great foil for our hero because she gets visibly exasperated by him and isn’t afraid to tell him what she thinks of him. Their exchanges are usually funny.
The final line of the episode provides a big laugh, too.
