Rock's pantheon expands for royalty and rogues

NEW YORK - Music royalty held court last night at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fam's 16th annual induction dinner.
Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, presided over the incoming class of performers. Also inducted were Paul Simon, Aerosmith, Steely Dan, Solomon Burke, the Flamingos, the late Ritchie Valens and, in keeping with the regal theme, Queen.
"You can't ask for a more deserving or well-rounded group of inductees," said Seymour Stein, president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. "The careers ... span the entire history of rock and roll, and most are still going strong."
Queen kicked off the festivities with a spirited rendition of the stadium anthem-turned-Taco-Bell jingle "We Will Rock You," sparked by a squeal of feedback from Brian May's guitar. He and drummer Roger Taylor took turns singing.
Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters joined Queen for a raunchy rendition of "Tie Your Mother Down," with Grohl providing lead vocals.
"Queen were my first concert, and every concert since then has been a bit of a letdown," said Hawkins, who joined Grohl at the podium to induct the hard-rocking, high-drama band.
"It means more than all the Grammys we never got," said Taylor. He and May were accompanied onstage by the mother singer Freddie Mercury.

Happy birthday to the legendary Sid Vicious, the influential bass player of the Sex Pistols! 🎉🎂
Sid Vicious, born John Simon Ritchie, had a tumultuous upbringing in London, which influenced his rebellious nature and punk rock persona. He joined the Sex Pistols, one of the most iconic and controversial bands in music history. As the bass player, Sid's energy and stage presence contributed to the band's raw sound and explosive live performances.
Known for his controversial behavior, Sid Vicious often made headlines with his punk ethos and rebellious attitude. Unfortunately, the Sex Pistols disbanded in 1978, marking the end of an era, but Sid's impact as a punk icon was undeniable.
Following the disbandment of the Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious embarked on a solo career and formed a band called The Vicious White Kids. Tragically, Sid's life took a devastating turn when his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, died under mysterious circumstances in 1978. Sid was arrested and charged with her murder, but he passed away from a heroin overdose before the case could be resolved. Both Sid and Nancy's lives ended in tragedy, leaving an indelible mark on punk rock history.
Sid Vicious adopted his stage name as a tribute to Johnny Rotten, who jokingly mentioned that Sid's previous nickname of "Simon Ritchie" was too boring.
"God Save the Queen," is a song that courted controversy upon its release. The track served as a scathing critique of the British monarchy and political establishment, openly challenging the status quo. Its provocative lyrics and anti-establishment sentiment ignited a firestorm of media backlash and led to the song being banned by major broadcasters in the UK. "God Save the Queen" became a symbol of punk rebellion and the Sex Pistols' defiance of societal norms.
Today, we remember Sid Vicious, a punk rock icon whose influence and tragic story continue to captivate us. His contributions to music and his place in punk history will forever be remembered.
