Are Doc Martens Work Boots Good?
Since the 1960s and is still one of the most preferred brands in the market. Designed literally by a German doctor during the time of the Second World War, Docs have been growing so fast that the brand was named as the eighth fastest growing British company in 2012.
According to the famous Business Insider, almost 10 million pairs of Dr. Martens are made each year but could this be the brand of your choice?
My answer would definitely be a YES! These boots are perfect for almost any kind of work whether it’s a warehouse job, an office job or an outdoor job. Docs are comfy yet cool. The cushioned soles in them are tough enough to save your day. From giving you a snug fit to a mind blowing durability, these boots are worthy of being a good pair of work boots.
However, there are other factors that make Docs capable to be your favorite work boots. What are they? Let’s have a look!
What are the Different Types of Doc Martens Boots?
Doc Martens manufactures a variety of work boots that includes work boots for men, women and work safety shoes. I have classified these boots according to their specific areas like exquisite features and technologies.
Doc Martens Boots Classification by Features
With one of its kind features, Doc Martens gives you enough varieties to browse from. Just choose from their work boots by aligning the specific features to your particular need.
1.) Anti Static Work Boots
These conductive safety boots will save your feet by sending the electrical charges directly to the ground and thus prevent electrocution, spark or a static shock. These boots are well suited if you are dealing with electricity on a daily basis.
2.) Non-Metallic Toe (NMT)
These are nothing but composite toe boots which will protect your feet from extreme weather conditions. What’s really interesting about these boots is that they can pass through a metal detector and are best for people who work in harsh conditions.
3.) Safety Plate Boots
These are the steel toe variant of Doc Martens and are known for providing a protective reinforcement in the toe area. The boots can actually save your feet from falling objects and compression.
4.) Slip Resistant Boots
You can easily guess what’s special about this boot from the name itself. Designed with rubber soles and tread patterns these boots can increase the traction which can indeed save you from slipping. Other than rubber, the materials used in manufacturing are PVC and PU which make them perfect slip-resistant boots. The boots are suitable for people who work in an oily or slippery working environment.
Doc Martens Technologies
The two unique technologies that you will definitely find in these boots are:
1.) SoftWair
This particular technology is the reason that makes Martens lightweight and comfortable. Not just this, by eliminating the feeling of a heavy boot, SoftWair engineering allows your feet to breathe easily in the workplace with the help of air cushioned sole. And yes, the boots will also save your feet while you work in grating conditions.
2.) Grip-Trax
Interestingly, this is the first tech to be developed by Dr. Martens which is the perfect amalgamation of durability, slip resistance and comfort. The enhanced flex and cushioning of these boots make the worker feel safe and protected.
Why Should You Choose Dr. Martens?
From comfort to durability, I have got a number of reasons to convince you that these boots are just the right choice for work wear.
1.) The Docs are made to last with their hard leather. These boots can sustain almost every kind of wear and tear without cracking or splitting. Thanks, to the tough lining and stitching that saves the boot from rotting or bursting.
2.) Give extra protection to your feet with Docs when you are at your job. The steel toe area of the boots safeguards your metatarsal area against stumbling. Whatever work you do, these boots promise to protect your feet from almost every kind of element whether it’s water, snow or mud.
3.) The most important factor to be kept in mind while purchasing any work boot is comfort and trust me Doc Martens consider comfort a basic need rather than a choice. Wear them for sometime and you will realize that these are the coziest shoes you can ever wear. The soft inner lining keeps your skin protected saving you from all those irritating blisters.
4.) These have got good arch support and can accommodate different types of arches. The presence of an air-cushioned sole which is bouncy and flexible makes the boots very appropriate even for people with very low arch.
5.) Sometimes boots feel too restrictive but with Doc Martens you get what you need. The slip on boots are very accommodative and are quite easy to pull on and pull off.
6.) The functionality of Doc Martens is just great. The basic, no-nonsense style of these boots is quite impressive for the long term. Trust me, these boots make a statement of their own.
Which Dr Martens should you Buy?
Doc Martens come in different styles. Here are my top three choices
1.) Doc Martens Ironbridge Heavy Industry Boots
Dr. Martens – Men’s Ironbridge Heavy Industry Boots
Rich, water resistant tumbled leather uppers
Slip resistant sole reduces the risk of slips and falls on hazardous surfaces
Welted construction foot bed offers exceptional stability and durability
Protects against accidental contact with an electric charge
$129.95 Buy on Amazon
Prices pulled from the Amazon Product Advertising API on: 10/18/2020 8:59 AM
This Ironbridge boot is a legendary model from this brand. Coming with a 8-tie, lace- to- toe work style these rugged, soft toe boots are specially manufactured for people in the service industry. The lightweightness, comfort and slip resistance make the boot suitable for a general work environment.
If we talk about the design, the heavy industry boots are available in mainly black and dark brown variants which make them blend in any type of work environment. The boots are made of oiled and tumbled leather which is 100% water resistant. The presence of SmartMask feature in its sole gives you antibacterial protection.
Moreover, if you are looking out for comfort then the padded boot’s collar and tongue are always ready to save your day. The boots have inbuilt PVC air-cushioned sole which is resistant to oil, fat, petrol and alkali so that when you walk on hazardous surfaces there is no danger of slips and falls. The boots can also save you when you accidentally come in contact with an electric charge. You can also expect exceptional stability and durability from these tough yet gentle boots.
Pros:
Oil tumbled leather
Durable construction
Exceptionally stable
PVC air-cushioned sole with moisture wicking lining.
Cons:
Break in period takes longer than usual.

Back to grindstone
My normal working week is very different to this time two years ago… actually to this time a year and half ago.
Back then I was working at IBM (which I referred to as Starfleet in the older pages of this blog – to preserve it’s anonymity). Nowadays, I couldn’t care less about that. I had a fun time in a round of redundancies, which ultimately left me wondering why the hell I hadn’t left several years ago. It left a very bad taste in the way that they treat their employees, who are just numbers. Great experience, Awesome people (for the most part), terrible conditions.
Now I’m working somewhere far more sensible, and very happy with it I am. It’s like going back in time insofar as I like getting up in the morning to go to work. I have a new found enthusiasm for what I do, and I’m very grateful of it. If I had a gripe at all (and I don’t) it would be the fact that the office is in Shropshire, when I live in Gloucestershire, so there’s a travel element.
But I really don’t mind. They accommodate me, so I’m very happy to be here for them. Not only that, but I get to choose from all sorts of weird and wonderful places to stay. As I’m not in a major city, there’s no Marriott or Hilton to chase points in, so I like to try out the more interesting places.
This week I’m in Ironbridge which is stunning. I’ve come to love this little valley, and people (and pubs) in it. From the Woodbridge right through to the Meadow Inn, and all in between (and north and south of the river) have their own character and quirks. So much so, that we even frequent it when I’m not working on occasion – so it must be good. I’m not going to say too much about the place today – because I”ll be back next month for Mother-in-laws birthday, so I’ll tell you all about it then. But here’s a couple of photo’s (form last year) before the blew up the towers (a terrible mistake in my opinion).

As I eluded previously, an ex-colleague lives here, which is an added bonus when I’m staying and he’s about too. Always good to catch up with the Welsh mathematician, who’s spending all his free time fixing his beautiful house. It’s in a fantastic location and will be incredible to retire to once he’s finally finished it. It’s a labour of love and he’ll love it – in the mean time, it’s challenging stuff – but he’s more than man enough for the job. He’s a lucky fella.
It was good to catch up with him last night. We shot the breeze for a while and he regaled me of tales of the team. I felt bad. Things have worked out well for me, and yet things only seem to have gone down hill for them. All of which meant I remember why I don’t miss the work, even if I do occasionally miss the gang. Good guys being abused by their employer. Some would say “I would say that, wouldn’t I” – and they be right, I would, because it is so.
Until next time – take it easy G

Think Like Nature project is a long-term approach to education for children, young people, families and adults, maximising the benefits of learning with the help of nature. Whilst its roots are planted firmly in the theory of how children learn, Think Like Nature puts the learner at the heart of their learning experience. From this fundamental platform, we want to offer youth workers and subsequently children and young people the opportunity to engage with the rich natural diversity of the woodland environment to help build confidence, sensitivity, resilience and curiosity. We believe in the holistic learning process that aims to raise self-awareness and self-esteem in participants. As a result, sessions will take place in a woodland environment, where the landscape itself adds to the experience of learning. An outdoor element offers leadership and team problem solving challenges that allow to practice new behaviors in a supportive collaborative environment.
The ultimate goal of this project is to equip and inspire youth workers and youth leaders, educators, partners and other involved parties (especially communities) with a set of innovative methods and tools as part of the “Think Like Nature” framework, so that to develop competences, enhance work with target groups and further spread the non-formal methods. We want to deconstruct, reconstruct and test with the participants the framework, which is based on non-formal nature- and community- inclusive methods. This project is practical, based on real problems and needs, offerng competences and skills that are applicable and transferable in participant’s personal life and work with youth.
Objectives
Raise the awareness of youth workers on the influence and importance of nature and outdoor activities as part of the education.
Promote a non-formal nature-inclusive education as an important way to grow emotional and social intelligence, leading to self-development and stronger community sense.
Equip participants with the new concepts, innovative tools and methods of “Think Like Nature” framework
Facilitate discussions and activities to find out together methods, actions and events, which can boost youth’s self-awareness, self-esteem, self-development and consequently community development with the help of nature.
Empower youth workers and leaders to learn, share and be able to teach others on “forest school” methodologies. We expect participants to apply the learned methodologies, both theoretically and practically, in their communities at home.
Develop participants’ competences and skills in learning systems of collaborative consumption, co-distribution, co-working, co-sharing and accompany them with practical examples when and where they can be used.
Create a collaborative environment, where “Think Like Nature” framework will be both extensively discussed by participants, but also new projects to further deepen, develop or extend the topic be developed during and after the project.

STAYS WITH STYLE | A Romantic Weekend Retreat in the Shropshire Hills
Where did we go?
Rowan Lodge (sleeps 2) Hope Bagot, Ludlow, Shropshire Priced from £58.85 per night Glamping Hub
We loved the soft furnishing and decor throughout
Our Visit
As we neared our destination we ascended high up into the hills, eventually disappearing into a cloud, with dimly visible sheep marking the common either side of us. Clee Hill is home to one of the highest settlements in the England and although the cottage was easy to find, it felt like we were miles from anywhere thanks to the private woodland setting of the cottage. In fact there’s 45 acres of woodland here that guests are free to explore, and as we drove slowly down the winding track through the woods, a feeling of calm descended.
On arrival we were met by friendly Fern who walked us over to the cottage and gave us the lowdown on using the woodurner and central heating. First impressions were good and the cottage felt spacious and yet cosy. A quick nose around the kitchen confirmed it had everything we needed to make our evening meal and we quickly settled in and cracked open the wine.
The bedroom was lovely with gorgeous bedding. The soft fluffy robes laid out for us were a lovely touch and the bedroom was very well appointed. The double bed was comfortable, and with both the heating and wood burner on, the cottage quickly heated up. In fact the living room got so warm that despite the freezing cold night, we ended up standing out on our private decked area hugging and looking up at the stars whilst we cooled down.
If it’s a romantic break you’re looking for then Rowan Cottage is definitely a good choice!
The views from our cottage were beautiful and expansive, and we enjoyed a particularly spectacular sunset while we were there. Although it was too chilly to sit out on the decking, in the summer, I can imagine it would provide the perfect way to while away an evening in peaceful and pretty surroundings.

Out and About
I’d never visited Ludlow before but knew of the region due to it’s status as a mecca for foodies and for it’s proximity to the Shropshire Hills. We had intended to go walking in the hills, but ended up spending a relaxed afternoon mooching around the streets of Ludlow and visiting the castle.
With an entry fee of just £5 per adult, Ludlow Castle is excellent value for money and well worth a visit.
Venture across the river after you visit the castle to take in the beautiful sight of the River Teme, and if you’ve still got energy to burn, head up the wooded hills to Whitcliffe Common for a lovely short woodland walk and views back across the river towards the castle.

The view back over the river towards the castle
On the way home we took a detour and stopped off at Ironbridge, somewhere I’ve been wanting to go back to for years. The plan was to go and see the world heritage site and spend the rest of the afternoon at Blist Hill Victorian Town, sadly both were shut! Blist Hill is shut on a Monday and Ironbridge is undergoing lengthy repairs so none of the bridge was visible and it was a bit like a Ghost Town! We did stop for a fabulous lunch though at the Tea Emporium which is well worth a visit.
The Verdict
The Rowan Lodge accommodation that we stayed in was superb. Furnished to a very high standard, it contained everything we needed for a really comfortable stay and the big corner sofa and wood burning stove made the cottage perfect for cosying up in at the end of the day.
Having photographed some of the most stunning sunsets I’ve ever seen, visiting the castle, ambling around Ironbridge and walking at Whitcliffe common, I can’t recommend the location highly enough. Clee Hill itself is lovely with sheep freely roaming, and despite the secluded location, there’s a decent shop a few minutes drive away well stocked with any essentials you might have forgotten.
Final Thoughts
We loved our stay and would love to return in the summer to give us chance to spend more time outdoors and exploring the woodland. This is a super cottage that offers exceptional value for money and is ideal for a romantic getaway whatever the weather. We booked our stay with Glamping Hub which cost £58.85 per night.

When you stay in luxury holiday accommodation, you are guaranteed a higher level of comfort and quality than in standard hotel rooms. Luxury accommodation usually offers luxurious and modern amenities, such as spacious living areas, high-end furniture, top-of-the-line appliances, and extra touches like a concierge or a full-service spa. Plus, with more room to spread out, you can relax and enjoy your holiday without feeling cramped.
Additionally, luxury holiday accommodation often comes with more services and amenities than traditional hotels. These could include private pools, hot tubs, 24-hour gyms, on-site restaurants and bars, golf courses, and much more. All these extras make your holiday even more enjoyable and stress free.
Finally, when you stay in luxury holiday accommodation, you can enjoy the peace and tranquility that come with staying in an exclusive environment.
