The governor was firm: Nebraska would reject the new federal money for summer meals. The state already fed a small number of children when schools closed. He would not sign on to a program to provide all families that received free or cut-rate school meals with cards to buy groceries during the summer.
“I don’t believe in welfare,” the governor, Jim Pillen, a Republican, said in December.
A group of low-income youths, in a face-to-face meeting, urged him to reconsider. One told him she had eaten less when schools were out. Another criticized the meals at the existing feeding sites and held a crustless prepackaged sandwich to argue that electronic benefit cards from the new federal program would offer better food and more choice.
“Sometimes money isn’t the solution,” the governor replied.
.......
The new $2.5 billion program, known as Summer EBT, passed Congress with bipartisan support, and every Democratic governor will distribute the grocery cards this summer. But Republican governors are split, with 14 in, 13 out and no consensus on what constitutes conservative principle.
One red-state governor (Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas) hailed the cards as an answer to a disturbing problem. Another (Kim Reynolds of Iowa) warned that they might increase obesity. Some Republicans dismissed the program as obsolete pandemic aid. Some balked at the modest state matching costs. Others hinted they might join after taking more time to prepare.
The program will provide families about $40 a month for every child who receives free or reduced-price meals at school —$120 for the summer. The red-state refusals will keep aid from about 10 million children, about a third of those potentially eligible nationwide.
......
As with Medicaid, poor states are especially resistant, though the federal government bears most of the cost. Of the 10 states with the highest levels of children’s food insecurity, five rejected Summer EBT: Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama and Texas.
Like the school lunch program, it serves families up to 185 percent of the poverty line, meaning a family of three would qualify with an income of about $45,500 or less.
......
Some Republicans, in rejecting the aid, found critics in their own ranks. After Gov. Henry McMaster of South Carolina dismissed Summer EBT as a duplicative “entitlement,” State Senator Katrina Shealy, a fellow Republican, wrote a column with a Democratic colleague warning that “hunger does not stop during summer break.”
In an interview, Ms. Shealy said the state should not reject $65 million “just because Biden is president,” and perhaps just partly tongue-in-cheek wrapped her plea in Trumpian bunting: “Everyone wants to say, ‘America First’ — well, let’s feed our children first.”
Oklahoma initially said it rejected the program because federal officials had not finalized the rules. But responding to critics, Gov. Kevin Stitt, a Republican, sharpened his attack, calling Summer EBT a duplicative “Biden administration program” that would “cause more bureaucracy for families.”
Tribal governments, which have influence over large parts of the state, stepped in. Already feuding with Mr. Stitt, they promised to distribute cards to all eligible families on their land, regardless of tribal status, while bearing the $3 million administrative cost. The five participating tribes will cover nearly 40 percent of Oklahoma’s eligible children, most of them not Native American.
“I remain dumbfounded that the governor of Oklahoma would turn down federal tax dollars to help feed low-income children,” said Chuck Hoskin Jr., the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation.
-------------------------
some of the most stunning highlights of this story.
All I got to say is, let's feed the children? every single Democratic Governor took the money to feed the kids, every governor who rejected it, every single one, is a Republican. If you don't vote for Democrats you are STEALING food out of kids mouths.

The Ultimate Texas Home Loan Guide
Navigating the process of obtaining a home loan in Texas can be complex, especially for first-time buyers. Understanding the steps involved—from application to approval—is crucial for ensuring a smooth and successful home-buying journey. In this guide, we'll provide an overview of the Texas home loan process, breaking down each step to help prospective buyers navigate the path to homeownership with confidence.
Preparing for the Application Process
Before diving into the application process, it's essential to prepare your finances. This includes:
Reviewing your credit report
Paying down debt
Saving for a down payment and closing costs
Gathering necessary documentation such as pay stubs, tax returns, and bank statements
Choosing the Right Loan Program
Texas offers a variety of home loan programs to suit different needs and financial situations. Options include:
Conventional loans
FHA loans
VA loans
USDA loans
Researching and comparing loan options can help you choose the program that best fits your needs.
Completing the Loan Application
Once you've chosen a loan program, it's time to complete the loan application. This involves providing detailed information about your:
Finances
Employment history
The property you wish to purchase
Be prepared to answer questions about your income, assets, debts, and other relevant financial information.
Undergoing the Loan Underwriting Process
After submitting your loan application, it undergoes a thorough review by the lender's underwriting team. During this process, the lender:
Verifies your financial information
Assesses your creditworthiness
Evaluates the property's value
Be prepared to provide additional documentation or explanations if requested by the underwriter.
Obtaining Loan Approval
Once the underwriting process is complete, you'll receive a loan decision from the lender. If your loan is approved, you'll receive a loan commitment letter outlining the terms and conditions of the loan. Review the letter carefully and ensure you understand all terms before proceeding.
Closing the Loan
The final step in the home loan process is closing, where you sign the necessary paperwork to finalize the loan. This typically takes place at a title company or attorney's office and involves:
Signing documents related to the loan, the property, and the transfer of ownership
Paying closing costs, which may include fees for loan origination, appraisal, title insurance, and other services
Securing a home loan in Texas requires careful preparation, research, and attention to detail. By understanding the steps involved—from application to approval—and working closely with a knowledgeable lender like Aliton Finance Texas, you can navigate the process with confidence. Remember to ask questions, seek clarification when needed, and advocate for your interests throughout the home loan process. So sorry for the late response but omg Manny, i miss you so much! It's just not the same without you around. But yeah i'm fine. My hours at OG have been cut to like 10 hours a week. No more Sunday morning shifts. Not that i'm complaining. Its about time i get out of the service industry game, anyway. Chris is kinda hinting he wants kids now sooooo eh...The question is, how have you been?! Is it all working out how you planned? You got a nice place to live? Give me updates! Lots of lovexxx
Brace ya'self, Ish. It's gonna be a long one.
Honestly, I'm glad you remembered who I was. I miss y'all too (you especially, you're basically like my she-bro). Sorry about your hours getting cut, I feel like that's something going on with every corporation because at my job (I'm working at Nike now, retail job, customer service), I'm lucky to get more than 12 hours a week and I need at least 30 to keep up with my expenses.
I honestly have no clue how I managed to survive this long but I've been keeping a video journal series on my YouTube to look back on just in case I forget (youtube.com/22aaa).
Chris wanting a family is great! dude making big moves, I just hope that things go well for y'all beforehand because I personally don't trust this economy but if dude wants a family, he also at least has an idea how to manage it so I just hope for the best for y'all :)
As far as quitting the service industry, you have any idea where you wanna go to next? It's a big world out there and it'll drown us if we ain't prepared.
I thought I was prepared but the first two weeks I was out here in Texas, I was sleeping in my car.
I jumped the gun with this job I thought I had set up. Looking back, it would have been smarter if I just requested to come here with vacation time, checked out some things, came back to Georgia and racked up with another tax income check.
Instead, the job I THOUGHT I was gonna get basically told me that they wasn't looking for any new workers. Thankfully, I have a cousin in Houston that was cool with me crashing at her place until I got myself together.
I ended up getting the job at Nike and jumping the gun again with this apartment (sleeping in the car during hot ass August was not the ideal situation for ya boy and I was desperate).
I got the apartment around August and been using what money I had saved up to get myself situated with this place but because I got all these bills and not so many hours, I've been on edge about how I'm gonna pay for a lotta stuff.
If worst comes to worst, I can always go back home to Louisiana, lick my wounds and try again. I'm in surprisingly good shape so I can retain this body for at least another decade before my bones start to go lol.
Positive note, I've been working out a bit more, been training to be a wrestler still. It feels good that some wrestlers know who I am enough to say "hey man, you cool" to me sometimes but dude…every time I go to a wrestling show (I help out as like an usher for seats or like a doorman or something), I just say to myself "I should BE there".
The thing is I need to be able to train for a year straight and the challenge with that is just money and time. I'm willing to do what I need to do to get myself in that action, I just ain't got the money for it as much as I like but when I CAN go train, ya boy has fun every dang time.
Hoping things are working for y'all over there, really glad you reached out. I got scared for a moment lol

Let familiar with truck driver taxes in Houston
Truck driver taxes in Houston, Texas, are subject to both federal and state tax laws. Here is an overview of the key tax considerations for truck driver taxes in Houston:
Income Taxes: Truck drivers are required to pay federal and state income taxes on their earnings. The federal income tax rate varies depending on your income level, and Texas does not have a state income tax, which can be advantageous for truck drivers residing in Texas.
Self-Employment Taxes: If you are an owner-operator or an independent contractor, you may be subject to self-employment taxes, which cover Social Security and Medicare taxes. These taxes can be significant, so it's important to set aside a portion of your income to cover these obligations.
Fuel Taxes: Fuel taxes can be a substantial expense for truck drivers. In Texas, the fuel tax rate is subject to change and can vary depending on the type of fuel and the purpose of its use (on-road or off-road).
Permits and Licenses: Depending on the type of trucking you do and your specific situation, you may need to obtain various permits and licenses, which may have associated fees and taxes. This can include things like oversized load permits, international fuel tax agreements (IFTA) licenses, and more.
Deductions: Truck drivers can take advantage of various tax deductions to reduce their taxable income. Common deductions include expenses related to fuel, maintenance, meals on the road, truck repairs, insurance, and more. Keep thorough records to support your deductions.
State-Specific Considerations: Texas may have specific tax laws and regulations that apply to truck drivers. It's essential to stay informed about any state-specific tax requirements that may impact you.
Estimated Taxes: If you are an independent contractor or owner-operator, you may be required to make quarterly estimated tax payments to the IRS and potentially to the Texas Comptroller's office. Failing to do so can result in penalties and interest.
Tax Professionals: Due to the complexity of tax regulations for truck drivers, many seek the assistance of tax professionals, such as accountants or tax preparers, who specialize in transportation-related tax matters. They can help ensure that you are compliant with all tax obligations and can maximize your deductions.
Visit Mitchell Tax Law to stay up-to-date with the latest regulations and seek professional advice when needed to ensure compliance with tax obligations and optimize your tax situation as a truck driver in Houston or anywhere else in the United States. We provide you with a thorough analysis so that you can optimize your tax situation in Houston. Learn more!

Target 'sortation' center coming to Detroit fairgrounds site
Tumblr media
By Kirk Pinho I July 11, 2023  I  Crain’s Detroit
A Target Corp. distribution facility is expected to open on the former Michigan State Fairgrounds site in Detroit.
The building would clock in at about 180,000 square feet on a portion of the sprawling property at Eight Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, where the state's largest Amazon.com Inc. distribution facility has been constructed after being announced almost three years ago, the Minneapolis-based retail giant confirmed Tuesday.
The Target facility was first reported by The Detroit News on Monday.
Through a spokesperson, a message was sent to Detroit-based developer and landlord The Sterling Group, who is co-developing the majority of the property with Dallas-based Hillwood Enterprises LP.
Target did not respond to additional questions about the building.
A sign on the site — generally referred to as Parcel A — says a logistics-style building is expected to be open in June. A rendering shows a new building with some red on its front, but no tenant identified.
The contractors listed are Oliver/Hatcher Construction and MiG Construction.
In February, Target said it was opening more than a half-dozen sortation centers in a $100 million investment in markets across the U.S.
Those new facilities, expected to be online by 2026, add to its fleet of existing sortation centers in Minnesota, Texas, Colorado, Illinois, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Illinois. Its three most recent centers opened around Chicago and Denver. At the time, the company said its new facilities will end up "creating hundreds of new jobs in local metro areas with market-leading wages."
The sortation centers are a way to help Target compete with the rise in e-commerce. They receive orders prepared by store employees and send them out through a delivery network, whether that's Shipt or another third-party provider. Target refers to it as part of its "stores-as-hubs" strategy, using its brick-and-mortar big-box stores "as a launchpad for online orders."
The company said last year that its online sales rose nearly $13 billion from 2019 to 2021 and stores fulfilled more than 95% of total sales in 2021. Some 50 million packages are expected to go through Target sortation centers this year, double from last year, the company said.
Frank Hammer, a co-chair of the State Fairgrounds Development Coalition, which has been vocal in criticizing various components of the 142-acre property's redevelopment plan over many years, said the Target facility is going on the site of the old Joe Dumars Fieldhouse/Agricultural Building, demolition of which came as a surprise to his organization. He and members of the community first became aware of the incoming Target building when told by a city official during a Zoom meeting in May, Hammer said.
The Target facility would join the gargantuan Amazon facility, which is the size of approximately 20 typical Walmart stores.
"The idea that the fairgrounds can be turned into this mammoth logistics center ... We have a lot of feelings about that, because the fairgrounds actually plays a very critical role in Detroit and in the region, and the state," Hammer said.
The Sterling Group/Hillwood JV is also working on another building already under construction on the site, although its ultimate occupant is not yet known. It's expected to be about 292,000 square feet, per marketing materials from the Southfield office of Colliers International Inc., which has the listing.
Sterling Group and Hillwood paid $9 million for the fairgrounds site and no city tax breaks or incentives have been involved. The city paid $7 million for it in April 2020. The lack of tax incentives and the fact that the JV paid the appraised value of the land allowed it to skirt the city's community benefits ordinance process, which is triggered at $75 million.
"Our efforts from the very, very beginning was the notion of community input into what would become of the fairgrounds," Hammer said. "That was really our premise, in terms of our involvement. When the community benefits ordinance passed in 2016, we saw that as an opportunity ... That was something that was legislated, that this development, certainly Amazon would have, you know, come under the terms of the community benefits ordinance."
The $400 million Amazon facility started construction in late 2020.

Is There a Smart Way to Divorce?
Tumblr media
Photo by Priscilla Du Preez on Unsplash
When it comes to getting a divorce, no set formula works for every couple. Each marriage is different, so the dissolution of the marriage will be too. However, that’s not to say there isn’t a smart way to go about getting divorced. Today, we’re going to take a look at how you can smartly prepare for divorce (and why getting a divorce lawyer is in your best interests).
What Exactly Does It Mean to Be “Smart” in Divorce?
Getting divorced changes everything. From the big things like how often you will get to spend time with your children to little things like ordering takeout from your favorite restaurant, divorce completely overhauls your life. And if you’re not prepared, it can make this overhaul a lot more difficult.
That’s what we mean by being “smart” in divorce. Before ever calling a divorce lawyer, you should think about what your life will look like once the divorce is finalized. What is your ideal child custody schedule? Do you want to stay in the house or find something new? While you may not always get what you want during the divorce process, knowing what you do want can make you better prepared to negotiate.
Now that’s out of the way, here are a few ways you can get a smart divorce.
Set Up Your Own Bank Account
If you and your spouse shared a joint checking or savings account, now is the time to establish your own. You will have your own legal fees and bills to pay. Furthermore, establishing your own account can ensure that any income you have directly deposited into your account is exclusively yours and that it’s protected.
While it doesn’t happen in every case, some of the more emotionally-charged divorces may involve one spouse trying to take money from the other to prove a point.
Gather Records
During the divorce process, you may need to show a variety of forms, ranging from the deed to the house, bank statements, and tax forms to other forms regarding your children and their medical needs.
Once you’re in your first consultation with a divorce lawyer, they’ll advise you on all the forms you need to gather. But by getting a head start on collecting these forms, you’ll save yourself some time down the line.
Don’t Post on Facebook
We live in a time when it’s normal to vent about your personal life online. This is a mistake, especially during divorce proceedings.
Remember, nothing you post online can truly ever be deleted or shielded from the public. And if you’re in the midst of a complex child custody battle, anything you post negatively about your soon-to-be ex can be held against you.
Keep in mind that family courts in Texas determine child custody based on what is considered to be in the child’s best interests. This typically involves parents who will be able to establish a civil relationship once the divorce is finalized.
Stay Flexible
It’s normal for emotions to run a little high during a divorce. After all, it can seem like everything is a battle. However, be smart about this and realize that no one comes out of a divorce battle as a winner.
Instead, the focus should be on both parties making compromises they each feel good about. As such, you need to be flexible and make compromises both in mediation and out. Your divorce lawyer can be a helpful resource in helping you remain flexible.
The more flexible you are, the less time your divorce will take, and the sooner you can move forward and be happy.
Have a Plan
Though it may be difficult to talk about this early on with your spouse, try to have a plan for yourself.
Before broaching the topic of divorce, make sure it’s an avenue you definitely want to take. And if it is, how will you approach the subject and when will you break the news to your kids? For example, if you decide you want to get divorced around the Christmas holiday, sharing the news with your kids before the holiday may lead to bad emotions. Consider the time of year and if any events are coming up that the divorce news could affect.
During the divorce, have a plan for where you will stay if family vacations will still occur, and who you will go to for support. Plan ahead for what your life will look like once the papers are signed. Is there a hobby you always wanted to start but never had time for? Make a plan to start it once the divorce is finalized, because it will give you something to look forward to on the days when the reality of divorce feels like a little too much.
All of these are important to keep in mind when you’re getting divorced. If you’re ready to move forward, an experienced divorce lawyer can help.
