The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) officially retired its F/A-18A/B Hornets in a ceremony at RAAF base in Williamtown, New South Wales, on November 29.
The fighters were officially retired after more than 35 years of service, in a stage made possible by the arrival of 44 of the 72 state-of-the-art F-35A aircraft.
In a proper tribute to Hornet, a solo flight exhibition marked his final farewell to the Australian public at the Wings over Illawarra Airshow on November 28.
RAAF's first F/A-18 Hornet leaves McDonnell Douglas' production line in St. Louis, Missouri.

The first two F/A-18A/B Hornets arrived in Australia on June 6, 1984, partially disassembled at the rear of a C-5 Galaxy from St. Louis, Missouri, United States. They were followed by the next two Hornets, flying on a 15-hour non-stop transpacific transfer on May 17, 1985.
In the following 3 decades, 71 Hornets contributed to various operations and exercises through the dedication of all aviators of Squadron No. 3, 75 and 77 and Operational Conversion Unit No. 2.

Air Combat Group Commander Commodore Tim Alsop said the farewell activity included an aerial exhibition over Tindal and Williamtown to thank the community for their support.
“We could not conduct our flight operations and exercises without the support of the community, especially around the bases of RAAF Tindal, Williamtown and Darwin – they have supported us for the last 30 years and for that we thank them,” Commodore Alsop said.

“The Hornets contributed to Australia's air power for a third of the centenary of the Australian Air Force, protecting Australia and its interests both at home and on the world stage.
The F/A-18A Hornets (single seat) and F/A-18B (double seat) have been an integral part of Australia's air combat capability, carrying out air-to-air and air-ground missions.

The F/A-18A/B Hornets positioned in Operations Slipper, Falconer and Okra, conducting attack missions and approximate air support in support of coalition forces.
The Chief of Staff of the Air Combat Group, Captain Jason Easthope, said the Hornet was a capable aircraft that served the Air Force with distinction.

“In the last 20 years, the Hornets have served in various operations abroad and at home, including our contribution to attack missions in Operations Falconer and Okra – this was significant because Australia had not dropped bombs in combat since the Vietnam War,” Captain Easthope said. “In Operation Okra, the F/A-18A/B Hornet squadrons flew 1,937 missions and more than 14,780 hours of flight, launching approximately 1,600 ammunition.
"Flying is my passion and I will always have a crush on Hornet," adds Easthope.
The end of Hornet's operations for Squadron No. 75 marks the beginning of a new chapter, with the transition from the RAAF to the F-35A Lightning II.
Tumblr media
Australia sold 21 Hornets to Canada, while 46 aircraft are being prepared for sale to Air USA, an American air combat training contractor.

The Mono Awards 2019: Australia and New Zealand's best black and white photos – in pictures
The Mono Awards reveal Australia and New Zealand’s best black and white photographers. Run by Australian Photography and Capture magazines, a panel of nine leading photographers judged the competition, which gave entrants a simple brief: the best single black and white image across one of two categories – People and Places.
Sharron Leppien’s winning People-category image, captured in Madagascar, shows a fleeting moment as a boy plays with a tyre in the shadow of the island’s iconic Baobab trees.
Gaanesh Prasad’s image, Fly High, was the result of more than two hours patiently waiting at the Wings over Illawarra airshow for the perfect moment to unfold
