“You think you’re that strong?” Lear laughed condescendingly, fury driving him back to old habits. He looked at the pair through rose-colored glasses, furious at Paulo’s lack of reaction. He needed the kid to understand how much this betrayal hurt; how much Paulo had hurt him. He wanted to force the kid to face him. To face his victim.
The prince ripped his shades off his face, revealing the tears clouding his vision. He folded them closed and put them in his pocket. The world felt too bright and too real and too cruel, but he had to bear it. Lear had to make Paulo see the reality of what he’d done.
“I think Hoopa’s that strong,” Paulo responded coldly. His gray eyes were wide as he stared at the mixture of fury and grief on display; a victory for Lear. The prince took another step forward, slowly growing closer to the kid. Paulo began to panic in earnest now, eyes widening. His voice gained a sharp, defensive edge. “That’s why you’re so protective of it, isn’t it? ‘Cause you wanted to make sure no one else could ever beat you. ‘Cause you… you wanted to be better than me!”
“I am better than you.”
Lear blinked. Tears ran down his cheeks in fat, ugly blobs. Paulo stared up at him in fear and guilt. “Is that what you want to hear? That we’ve all secretly looked down on you for losing every fight you’ve ever been in? For not defeating Team Break on your own? For not being able to save Tina? For not being able to save yourself?”
Lear walked until there were only a few feet between him and Paulo. He felt numb as he stared at the child in front of him. The inferno of his anger burned a bright, overwhelming red in his heart. The prince’s sync stone shone just as bright.
“Do you want me to tell you I hate you?” The prince tilted his head to emphasize the question, to draw attention to the tears falling down his face. He hoped Paulo wouldn’t call it out, because then he’d have to tell him yes, your kidnapping of my best friend has made me so upset I can’t stop crying, thank you for asking.
