The Ice Phoenix
Tumblr media
Did you know? - There are certain mutations that cause color changes in the ice phoenix’s feathers, the most common being red or black mutations. In such an unforgiving environment, such stark color changes come at the detriment of these mutants’ survival. These mutations seem to have a connection to the surrounding climate, as warmer regions seem to have more mutants. These areas are already on the cusp of being too warm to sustain the phoenix’s iced feathers, and an increase in mutants only further threatens these populations.
The red-feathered mutant is often called the ‘true’ phoenix as it resembled the fiery bird that it is named after. It’s even said to have the hot-tempered personality to match despite being one of the more timid variations when outside of protective social groups. Still, many consider these red birds to be a step closer to the phoenixes of myth. Interestingly, neither the red-colored ‘true’ variant nor the blue wild variations are actual phoenixes and have only been named as such due to their appearance. Consequently, the red mutants have no more affinity for warmth than any average ice phoenix. This hasn’t stopped others from trying to integrate these phoenixes into captivity as their vibrant, unique colorations make them highly sought after.
