Taboo VI The Homecoming: What was your first exposure to the Mountain Goats?I liked the Vlogbrothers when I was around 13 and desperate to expand my musical horizons beyond Christian pop. Any new band I heard of? Listened to em. So of course when John Green mentioned this weird band, I wanted to put an album from it on my list of albums to buy. My initial impression was mostly not understanding the emotional vibe, because, you know. I was like 13 and not yet tainted with depression. At 17 I bought Tallahassee.

Zopilote Machine: Which is your favorite “Going to” song?Let’s preface this with I definitely haven’t listened to all of them, and probably don’t even know of a few’s existence. Sheer emotional power is probably gonna have to go to Going to Georgia, but because I know John is zoomin away from that song at high speeds, Going to Queens is also a winner, because them lyrics are yumm.

Songs for Peter Hughes: Which member of the Mountain Goats reminds you most of yourself?Umm, in all honesty, the only one I know anything about is John and he’s nothing like me. So.

Sweden: Do you personally prefer the lo-fi or hi-fi albums? Why?That type of thing doesn’t matter as much to me as far as enjoying the music, but it does give a slightly different feel to the album. I couldn’t say whether I like one more, they’re just different. As long as John’s voice never stops sounding weirdly nasally, I’ll never have anything bad to say about anything this band makes haha

Nothing for Juice: What’s your favorite cover that the Mountain Goats has done (besides “The Sign”)?I can tell you what my favorite cover of one of their songs is, but I couldn’t tell you the reverse, sadly, because I didn’t even know they did a cover of that.

Full Force Galesburg: What’s a Mountain Goats song that most people don’t like or aren’t familiar with, but which you love?I don’t really know about people not liking it, but Seed Song certainly isn’t mentioned in proportion to how much I adore it. Same story with Wild Sage.

Protein Source of the Future…Now!: Which Mountain Goats song series is your favorite? (e.g. the Alpha series, the Orange Ball series)I actually quite like the Standard Bitter Love Songs because wtf where’s #’s 2 and 3 and all the songs are amazing and very bitter and are reminiscent of Alpha Couple but less daunting and more umm. Sudden? That doesn’t make sense. But yeah I like those.

The Coroner’s Gambit: Which Mountain Goats album do you think is the most under-appreciated?All of em haha, but one of the older ones, Ghana, does Ghana count? Because there’s some Gems on that one.

All Hail West Texas: What Mountain Goats song reminds you most of yourself?Until I find one that’s more fitting, I’m gonna stick with one that’s actually from this question’s album and say Color In Your Cheeks. I’m the narrator, obviously, offering sanctuary.

Tallahassee: What’s your favorite Mountain Goats album? Why?Oh no, you can’t possibly make me pick,,,,,, ahhhhhh,,,, The Sunset Tree, or All Hail West Texas, or Get Lonely, or Goths… Right now I think it might be The Sunset Tree, but it is the album I most recently got gifted so.

We Shall All Be Healed: Have you ever seen the Mountain Goats live? If so, what was your favorite thing about the show(s)? If you’ve never seen them live, is there a specific venue you’d like to see them perform at?I’ve never seen them live, and I’m so salty because I almost had the chance to but freaking school happened. I don’t care where I see them live, so long as I can at some point.

The Sunset Tree: What Mountain Goats song always makes you sad?Mmm. Most of em. Hmm. Woke Up New, Pale Green Things, Andrew Eldritch is Moving Back to Leeds.

Get Lonely: Who do you wish the Mountain Goats would collaborate with?lmao, The Front Bottoms or smth because those angsts together would create the most powerful angst ever.

Heretic Pride: What’s your favorite non-album the Mountain Goats track? (e.g. a live-only song or a rarity)So uh I don’t really have any time to go searching for that stuff, so I don’t have one.

Satanic Messiah: What’s your favorite Mountain Goats EP?Marsh Witch Visions, the most recent one, because it’s the first one I was actively following the band for when it was released.

The Life of the World to Come: Do you prefer 4AD or Merge? Why?This is the other one I for real don’t have an answer to because I don’t know a thing about either.

All Eternals Deck: What’s your favorite Mountain Goats lyric?I don’t think I could even tell you my top 10 lyrics from every album. John’s lyric genius is absolutely astounding and I could never pick just one line. Some honorable mentions: “some days I think I’d feel better if I tried harder, most days I know it’s not true” “they leaned like towers on a hillside struggling to stand” “the spirit wasn’t really willing anymore, but the flesh was very, very strong” “you were as sweet and delicious as the warm desert air” “believe in sheltering skies and stable earth beneath, but hear his breath come through his teeth” “Teeth filed down to fine points, framework too tight, strain at the joints”

Transcendental Youth: What are three of your favorite bands besides the Mountain Goats?Stabilo, that’s obligatory; Selah, because recently they’ve come back into my ears; Against Me!, because I’ve been thinking about that band a lot recently too.

Beat the Champ: What Mountain Goats song always cheers you up or gets you pumped up?Betcha can’t have just one!! None of these really cheer me up though, they just give me the desperate power to pull through. Heretic Pride, This Year, Up the Wolves, Water Song II, Sax Rohmer 1, The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton, definitely also some more that I’m being a little lazy in trying to remember.
