Food in Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events: Season 3
It is over. I finally finished season 3 about 2 hours ago and needed the time to recover and process the ending. While I have only faint memories of the ending in the book, this ending seemed very different (and I want to say I liked it more? I just recall being let down by the way the books ended; however, I was quite young at the time...).
Here is the final set of food notes from the show. The final season was comparatively sparse, but there were some interesting culinary choices. I hope you enjoy!
(Also, since this is the final installment, if anyone enjoyed my rambling carefully curated notes on food in TV shows, I would happily take requests to do this for a different show in the future. It was fun and gave me much to think about in the kitchen.)
Today’s notes are brought to you by Glassworks - Opening played by Ólafsson (because that I what I’m listening to).
Food in The Slippery Slope
Sarsaparilla
What Olaf drinks and discards while driving. It is flat. The bottle helps Violet and Klaus determine which fork to take.
Coffee and Tea
What pretentious people drink according to Olaf
Absinthe
A random beverage that popped into Olaf’s mind.
Marshmallows
Made Brucie the Snow Scout Leader sick after eating too many.
I really want to make these! Gelatin is such a fun platform for cooking so many things! The real goal would be blooming marshmallow flowers with whiskied caramel hot chocolate!
Rutabaga
What the circus freaks plan on growing on their farm.
Hot Dogs
What Olaf’s cooks with this troupe.
Brandy Sidecar or Coffee
What Esme wants with Breakfast.
A Brandy sidecar is a cocktail of cognac, cointreau (orange flavored liqueur), and lemon juice. Sounds pretty tasty -- I think (I know next to nothing about drinks...).
Frozen Orange Juice
Found by Sunny in trunk.
She uses this to make Sorbet.
Salmon
Caught in the stricken stream by Hook-handed man and given to Sunny. She prepares Sashimi with this.
Hot Cider [X]
Quigley’s last meal with his mother. What saved him from the fire.
Canned Peaches
Quigley’s meal at Montgomery’s.
Montgomery had a lot of canned peaches (or just two cans) because the Hook handed man in season 1 is also eating canned peaches when posing as a detective. Nothing wrong with this -- canned peaches are delicious.
Poisonous Berries
Mr. Poe tries to help by finding Breakfast.
I often see poisonous berries as red in TV (I am thinking mostly of a specific seen in the Netflix Witcher series) and it made me curious if real poison berries are always red. Nope: nightshade (duh) is black, and several other harmful berries are also black/blue. Some are orange. Given the brightness of these berries I am going to guess they were Mezereon or Elderberry.
Granola Bar
Mr. Poe has these. Kit has some.
Poe always has granola bars.
Lox
Sunny’s idea for dinner
Pistachios
Lemony is saying something and thinks they are for everyone one.
Parsley Soda
What Sunny gets when she requests a fizzy drink.
Boysenberry Jam
The darkest Jam in the VFD fridge.
This really makes me want good jam or to try jamming. Roasted lamb and jam...not sure where I would easily source lamb right now and is likely to be a far greater headache than I care.
Olives
There were 5 green olives filled with pimento in the jar. It indicated the gathering was on Thursday.
Mustard
All I wrote is the last safe place. I don’t recall the details -- but it was probably a clue.
Mustard is my favorite condiment. I can (and have) eat it plain.
False spring rolls
What was prepared for a meal for Olaf’s troupe by Sunny and Hook handed man.
How did they get wraps on a mountain...maybe you can repurpose a part of a fish to use as wraps. The skin or various internal linings? Seems less appetizing / food safe.
Rutabaga (again)
What Olaf’s troupe wants to grow.
Food in The Grim Grotto
Chewing Gum
Phil only cooks meals with chewing gum.
Chewy Casserole
Chewing gum casserole.
In my experience heating gum or gummy like things often goes very poorly. You can add them towards the end of the cooking process to create some sort of layer -- but definitely not from the start.
Potato and Cod Chowder
Non-gum based meal that Sunny and Phil prepared.
Calamari
What Sunny thinks Olaf’s sonar symbol is.
I fully accept that the children are seriously smart, but where is Sunny learning all of this? Did the books have cooking books (I think so..)? I shall assume that Sunny demands to be read only cooking books as bed time stories.
Soft Pretzels
Olaf wants these. I do too -- I should make them!
Turmeric
In one of Esme’s evil laughs.
Cabernet
Olaf wants wine and gets lost in the octopus submarine looking for some. He pronounces it as Caber-NET.
Horseradish
Cure for the Medusoid Mycelium.
Taragon, Wasabi
Contents of kitchen cabinets while Sunny is sick.
The wasabi is what is used as a culinary substitute and cure. Interestingly, it is Mr. Bobby brand. Would anyone know if this has significance? Brand names in this universe are interesting.
Lemon Lime Soda, Gorgonzola Cheese, Birthday cake for Violet
Contents of the fridge while Klaus and Violet are looking for horse radish.
That is a damn impressive cake. Fondant is really well done. Can you make fondant from gum? Probably not, but Sunny is resourceful and likely found a suitable culinary substitute.
Sub Sandwich
Prepared by Hook-Handed man to delay Olaf form assisting in torturing the children.
Looks like a pretty standard sub on a softer baguette. It appeared to have sliced deli meat.
Chef Salad
Fernald’s analogy for people to emphasize that categorizing people as noble, good, bad, or evil is invalid.
Pig Eating Pork
Ok -- this one is not food, but I was amused by Olaf’s simile to describe his joy.
Food in The Penultimate Peril
The Picnic Basket
I absolutely lost my mind with this scene. We only briefly see the contents of the picnic basket as Violet removes the top layer to reveal the concierge disguises Kit prepared. I paused and replayed this seen maybe 10 times to examine what was in that top layer. I then needed to cross reference some incomplete descriptions with two large pastry books (thankfully they have an entrement section...). I feel reasonably successful:
Millefeuille [X]
This is napoleon. Adding a flavor to the custard is a great way to modernize this dessert.
Cream Puffs (Might be a profiterole) [X -- I’ve done eclairs]
Choux pastry is very forgiving and a good entry point into fancier pastries. It forms the basis of eclairs, cream puffs, and, if you are crazy, croquembouche.
3 Layer cake
Unclear what more to say. Since these are all french pastries, perhaps the sponge is genoise?
Mini Opera Cake
Opera cake is layers of Joconde sponge (almond sponge) flavored with coffee syrup, layered with italian butter cream, and then topped with chocolate ganache. It was something I planned on making before everything closed down (I can’t eat it myself X.x).
Madeleine or Beignet [X]
Since this was a picnic basket, I am leaning in favor of Madeleines. They fit the other set of deserts better than a Beignet.
Nut Entrement
I think is this another cake, but it is unclear. I can’t seem to source this one either. Maybe it is carrot cake! That often has nuts around the perimeter.
Sauvignon Blanc
Olaf’s wine of choice
Aqueous Martini
Jerome’s drink of choice.
Indian Food
Larry, in his last waiter position, poses in an Indian Restaurant. Poe orders a glass of milk.
The Barking Gin Distiller Dry Goods
Interesting brand on the bag belonging to a lady on the trolley during the sequence when Justice Strauss is searching for the Children.
Tea
In flash back with Kit and Esme. Kit likes her tea as bitter as worm wood and sharp as a double edged sword.
Sausages
Crow meat and an analogy for learning the Law (you don’t want to know how the sausage is made, just like you don’t want to know how the law works).
Too much pepper and makes the court audience cough.
Food in The End
Root Beer Float [X]
Lemony has one. It is his thirteenth.
Waffles
Partially consumed by the man following Lemony at the diner.
Mixed Nuts
All that is left to eat on the boat. Sunny offers some to Olaf, but he knocks it into the sea.
Ceviche
Since the islanders don’t have any spice, they eat raw fish.
I have never had this, but recall reading in a book about sushi how it was integrated by some sushi chefs in South America into more traditional Japanese cuisine.
Fermented Coconut Cordial
I have no idea how you could get anything resembling an opioid from fermenting coconut water. Unless Ish is adding something, this seems suspect. Fermenting something sweet and earthy also does not really sound appealing.
Wasabi and Wormwood
Sunny’s suggestions on how to treat the Medusoid Mycelium.
Wormwood and related foods appear often.
Apple
Modified by Bertrand and Beatrice to contain the sugars giving immunity to the Medusoid Mycelium.
Chocolate Cake [X]
SQUEEE this was adorable. Sunny makes a cake for Beatrice II’s first birthday.
Salad
Shared by Fiona and Fernald.
Root Beer Float
Shared between Lemony and Beatrice II as she tells him the remaining story.
I want to believe that this is his 14th root beer float.
Black Bean and Mango Salad
Sunny makes this during the Finnish Female Pirates incident as told by Beatrice II.
This sounds amazing! Slightly ripe mango with a citrusy black bean mixture would be delightful!

✨ for all of them, 🎥 for treasure planet and guardians of gahoole, 🍀 for 9-1-1 and penumbra, 📃 for unicorn chronicles, 🏳️‍🌈 for howls, treasure planet and legend of zelda, and 💎 for any ones you have facts for lol
you spoil me uwu
🎥 - ok for treasure planet, gotta be the 12 years later scene in the beginning and the zoom in to the spaceport, the way it transitions from jim reading under the blankets to him flying on his solar surfer is so chefs kiss, and just like. everything about to the spaceport lmao, fr guardians definitely the scene where soren flies through the fire and then blows up the pulley system to get rid of the flecks energy, bro when hes flying above it all holding the lantern before he dives down to save them? chills
🍀 - you know im on that projection shit w/ juno steel, ive truly never like connected with a character like that before and he’s really really helped me thru my recovery and transition lol, fr 911 uhhh ig buck or eddie? i havent Thought About It or like consumed it enough times yet to rly settle on someone but fr now,,, they
🏳️‍🌈 - ok for howls, Everyone Is Bi/Pan, howl is trans and autistic and i will die on that hill, fr treasure planet jim and cpt amelia are both trans and both of them + doppler are autistic, fr loz link is trans, autistic and semi nonverbal and communicates primarily with asl, post twilight princess zelda says fuck it and finds a way back into the twilight realm and she midna and link hang out, most of these boil down to everyone i love is trans gay and autistic because i say so lmaooo
📃 - OK SO. without like, spoiling too many plot points, our main character is cara and she lives with her grandmother. her mom is dead and dad is out of the picture. one day theyre getting chased by these people that her grandma knows and cara gets thrown into an alternate realm full of fantasy creatures using her grandmothers amulet. she meets a unicorn named lightfoot and a bunch of other rad people and basically, starts a journey to save that world from the Hunters. the Hunters are an organisation who specifically hate unicorns and want them all dead, led by Beloved, and cara and her friends have to try and stop them from entering the world and wiping them out. its sooo so so good and i highly recommend it cause i have no one to talk to about it please god
✨ - oh boy uh, well. im just gonna like list them out lmao
unicorn chronicles: i loved unicorns as a kid and read it when i was in elementary school, and over the years its remained just as compelling and well written as i remember and like. god the whole concept is so godamn cool and all the subplots that get introduced are fuckign fantastic and like all the different creatures are amazing i literally cant sing its praises enough
howls moving castle: must i have a logical reason? is it not to vicariously live my fantasy of running away to the countryside with a wizard boyfriend, his demon and his apprentice?? for real though, its such a fantastic story with beautiful visuals in the movie and wonderfully compelling prose in the book, and esp in the movie the whole time travel subplot with sophie seeing howl and calcifer in the past and then howl finding her in the future makes me go feral
penumbra: gays in space. need i say more? im a huge slut for gay found family and especially in futuristic space, and im a huge big fan of the lgbt utopia its created. like yeah capitalism sucks but at least im not gonne get misgendered in space starbucks, u kno? all the writing and dialogue is so incredible and the SOUND DESIGN GOD, alex i know u specifically can relate when i say i would kill a man for sophie and her incredible sound design skills, like dude the dance scene in man in glass p2 you can hear every single individual step they take and every swish of junos dress and i jusT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! god its so good, plus the whole the characters help me work through my trauma and repressed anger haha
911: this one is entirely your fault. so obligatory horny on main everyone on that show is so hot i want oliver stark to cradle me gently in his beefy arms oh my god. other than Men, the way it drives home the whole ‘you can’t save everyone, and it will kill you to try, so just focus on what you can do and keep living’ makes me so emo. the way it tackles big bureaucratic issues as well as closer to home interpersonal ones is amazing and i love how it shows people going through and dealing realistically with trauma.
treasure planet: again, who doesnt want to live in Cool Steampunk Space Travel Future? i really really love jims story and his arc, the way he deals with his trauma is uhh very familiar lol and his relationship with silver is like the ideal. the story is just the coolest concept and i love all the wonderful character design and animation, plus the soundtrack SLAPS and everything is beautiful
legend of zelda: ive been associated with this series from a very young age due to my name and as soon as i gave into my fate and looked it up for real i just kinda fell into it lol. i cant really tell you exactly what draws me to it besides ‘wow fun game!’ and ‘god i wish that were me,’ but like the absurd amount of detail thats put into each installment and the creative ways they retell essentially the same/similar story over and over is incredible
guardians of gahoole: so i had the same experience with this and treasure planet which is i remembered ‘oh hey this is a movie that exists and i cant clearly remember watching it, ill look it up :)’ and then it consumed my life for a solid 3 months. firstly this movie is absolutely gorgeous, the animation and framing is fucking stunning and the way they handled owls talking like people as far as the movement of their very inflexible beaks was amazing. it sort of has the same draw for me as warrior cats? secret animal society ft incredibly traumatic experiences and the characters dealing with it. like, the whole concept is just so fuckign wild and it works so well, i rly enjoy this niche genre.
💎 - alright trivia time, so guardians of gahoole is based on a book series and the movie only covers part of the first arc i think idk, BUT theres another series set in the same universe called wolves of the beyond that i devoured when i was younger! i didnt know they were connected for the longest time and when i found out i was :000, i still rly love wolves of the beyond and wanna reread it, as well as read the actual gahoole books. in the howls books, sophie is a redhead! also, markl is named michael and like a fully functioning young adult who ends up marrying one of sophies sisters. treasure planet is, obviously, based off treasure island but its so much better than the book dont bother reading it lol i tried and it was boring. there was plans for a treasure planet sequel that was fully scripted and cast but it was cancelled cause disney sabotaged treasure planet from the start with the shitty release and advertising and tldr we were ROBBED, also amelias concept was much more octopus like and while that wldve been rad im p glad she was switched to a cat for. several reasons lol. uhh i dont have a lot of Fun Facts abt the unicorn chronicles but for the longest time i thought there were only 3 books and then last year i found the fourth book by chance in a kitsch store and nearly had a breakdown i was so happy, like full on i started shaking and crying cause there was so much joy in my body i cldnt contain it.
thats all i can think of tysm ily, to anyone who read all of this bless u please watch guardians of gahoole and read the unicorn chronicles i will love u forever

Korotan C Rough Summary/Synopsis (Part 4)
June 2016? My goodness, it’s been that long!? Sigh, my work life...
Previously on Korotan C: Princess Lea of Norgo Kingdom visits Kunugigaoka for a Debate Rally, but she's decided to sneak out of her hotel and into the city. Upon saving her from an assassination attempt, Class 3-E and Asano Gakushuu are now bodyguards on a mission to escort her to safety.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Spoilers beware, and remember, this is not intended to be a full word for word translation. This is only so that you have an idea of what is happening.
I have no guarantee that these are 100% accurate
Chapter 4
Taxi would be the quickest way to reach the embassy, but should their enemies discover them, it’ll become easy to mark and ambush. Thus, Karma suggests that they use methods that include crowds of people to make things harder for them.
They’ll use public transport whenever they can, and switch the mediums of travel too. From here, they can take the bus, then switch to train at the station. Of course, some of them have to stay with the princess.
Nakamura then suggests maybe it’ll help if the princess wears a different outfit. Like, she can put on a Kunugigaoka uniform, then someone else dresses in the princess’ outfit.
That idea will put the person dressed in the princess’ outfit in danger of being assassinate though. “Well, even if I say that, you’ll still do it anyway,” Karma quickly realises.
“Same hairstyle, same colour, isn’t that just right? Exactly like the princess who’s being marked! Incidentally, you better protect me, my meat shield!!” said Nakamura.
“Hey! How many times are you going to use me as a meat shield!?” retorted Terasaka.
After Nakamura and Lea swapped their clothing, Yoshida brings the princess a knit cap for her to completely hide her blonde hair.
“Class E keeps on demonstrating an unfathomable level of prowess, whether at the Athletic Festival or the 2nd Trimester Finals, just where did your strength came from?” questioned Asano.
“Well… it was probably… the result of us fighting to the death at the precipice that was Class E…” answered Isogai.
“Isogai-kun… is getting better and better at lying…” remarked Kayano (probably)
“Well… it’s not like he can say that it was all thanks to a Mach 20 superbeing,” replied Nagisa (probably)
Unbeknownst to everyone, someone is spying on them from the shadows.
“Everyone has matured well, getting more and more reliable. Should anything happen, Sensei will be there to help, so just go along with your own daring ideas!”
Suddenly, a dog barks from behind the octopus and he screams. Karma and Asano both heard him, to the former’s exasperation.
The students travel in 2 groups, with Lea grouped together with Asano, Nakamura, Karma and Terasaka. En route to the bus station, Lea gives the ambassador a call, telling him that everything’s fine, and she’s heading now to the embassy.
When the bus arrives, Karma and Asano boarded first to make sure passengers are OK, with Nakamura and Terasaka keep up their guard from behind.
Karma sits at a window seat closest to the emergency exit, with Lea next to him, and Asano standing next to her. Nakamura and Terasaka then sit to her front and rear, completing a cross-formation that defends Lea in the center for their travel.
But during the bus journey, Karma decides to lighten things up with small talk, to Asano’s chagrin.
“Hey, don’t you forget that we are supposed to be protecting the princess! Don’t relax your guard, we’re not here for sightseeing!”
“While keeping up your guard is important, it’s still a long way to the embassy, so there’s no way to maintain such a high tension for the whole trip.”
“It’s because you carry such optimism like so many others who’ve given up on hard work that you…”
“Besides, if you want to pursue perfection in being a bodyguard, then before the princess made her suggestion, you should’ve taken the first step, so being adaptable is another essential skill to have.”
“I don’t need you to teach me how to be a bodyguard! And on the social side of things, I have plenty of experience.”
--
Lea watches with amusement at the banter between the two.
She remarks that “Karma” is an odd name, is it common in Japan? He reckons he’s the only one in Japan to have it, it’s a name that his always-travelling parents with their strange tastes came up with.
Isn’t that lonely, what with his parents not being at home? He thinks he’s actually freer this way, as long as they don’t mind his business he’s got no objections. Lea feels envious at the relationship the Akabanes have.
Karma then brings her attention to Asano’s family. Normally, if you have the school’s board chairman for a father, then you would get all sorts of special treatment, and everything is fine and dandy, but not for Asano-kun. Never mind special treatment, the way he kept working hard to stay at the top is considered “that’s how it should be”, that’s just…
[“You know nothing! Can you cease with your blabbering! Since ancient times, the only ones who become rulers are the strong. That is my father’s compass of education, and one that I believe to be correct. I never yearned for any warmth between father and son, and I have no interest in discussing such relationships with someone who likes to gossip like Akabane. So whether it’s this guy, or my father, I will rule over you all, over all of humanity. That is my calling, and I take joy in living in this calling.”]
[“Pfft,”] blurted Nakamura. [“So cool, Asano-kun! But I think that’s just a load of hubris.”]
[“There’s no helping it if it’s seen as hubris, although, I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing to be undeterred by the gazes of others and stick to your beliefs. But if it were me, there’s no way I would ignore how others around me sees things, or the expectations from my parents or my citizens. I would stick with my beliefs while carrying all the pressure and responsibility, and I would hate to act like I’m losing to that pressure!”]
[“Indeed, running away is no good.”] (Don’t know who says this)
Seeing his retaliation, Lea lightly pats him on his upper arm.
[“Let’s not talk about this anymore, Gakushuu is too perfect, it’s boring.”]
[“Expectations from others is proof of your worth, and as for how this strength is to be used, it’s completely decided by me, by my freedom. I decide where my life leads to.”]
(He was so serious that Karma and Nakamura opted not to tease him here)
[“From now on, I shall etch your words into my heart.  I will believe in myself and do the things that I believe in, and I shall not falter and continue forward, no matter what those around me say. But conversely, please remain in contact with me as much as possible.”]
[“Then you had better keep up with my growth.”]
Seeing how the two have been using such tough language against one another, Karma can’t help but feel excited. [“My oh my~ Don’t you think those two suit each other a lot?”]
[“Can you not make such low-levelled jokes!?”] Asano angrily stares at Karma.
[“Aha, he’s angry now~ Asano-kun is so cute~!”] [“He does like the princess huh~!”]
Asano’s strong tone only got Karma and Nakamura more fired up.
[“When this is over, if you dare to spread this sort of rumour, I’ll use all the power in the school to massacre you!”]
[“So scary~”]
She may’ve been the butt of the joke, but Lea holds in her laughter and turns to the windows. The appearance of her excitedly gazing out at the scenery of the passing streets presents a temperament of both girlish innocence and royalty. Asano involuntarily looked at this from a side view, but when he suddenly sensed a devilish gaze coming from Karma, he hurriedly turned back towards the front.
“Hey! Can’t you all speak with some simpler English? I couldn’t hear a lick of it!” said Terasaka.
“Man, you just had to do it, breaking up this lovely atmosphere?!” retorted Nakamura, as the bus slowly approaches the train station.
--
Meanwhile, the second group had already taken another bus, arrived at the train station and got into formation. Some went to check the surroundings for any assassins that may be in hiding, while others remain nearby gathering intelligence on the situation.
In front of the station, Nagisa and Kayano are throwing out snacks to the pigeons nearby, with more and more gathering, and even landing on their heads and shoulders and pecking at the snacks in their hands. Isogai and Maehara, on guard nearby, wonder if they’re alright, but it’s part of Karma’s plan, what can they do?
The “escort” bus now arrives at the station. Maehara spotted that one of the people waiting in line to board is dressed in black and reading a newspaper. And as the passengers gradually exit the vehicle, he leaves the queue and approaches them.
Isogai can see that the man has something in his hand, probably a syringe. He calls out to Nagisa before the duo runs towards the bus.
“CLAP” With a sound from Nagisa’s hands, the pigeons all flew towards the airspace around the bus. The man in black was distracted for one moment, and when he looked back, he’s face to face with his target. Well, someone who was supposed to be his target, smiling.
“Eh??? Did you see the princess?” Seeing Nakamura’s grin, the assassin knows that he messed up, and Isogai takes this chance to bat away his syringe with a rolled-up notebook. Not giving him any leeway, from behind Nakamura, Asano sends a kick his way and knocks him out.
The assassin had two more accomplices, and after seeing his defeat, they retreated to their car. But when they opened the door, they saw that the wheels had all fallen down to the side of the road. Next thing they knew, they’re strapped to their seats with duct tape.
[“You are under arrest.”] Nearby the station was Korosensei, dressed in police uniform while chewing bubble gum and playing with the duct tape roll. Next to him is Yoshida with a wrench and Muramatsu with a carjack, snickering that the assassins were way too obvious with their black clothes, black car and bubbling bloodlust.
“Korosensei, did you come to help us?” asked Nagisa. Having heard from Karasuma and Kataoka, at first Korosensei wanted to bring the princess to a safe place at Mach speed. But since he’s not allowed to do that, he can only support the kids, ensuring that the princess makes it to the destination and that his students are safe as well.
By the way, he took the chance to clean away the pigeon feathers and droppings on Nagisa. “Wha? When did that happen!?”
As thanks, he gives the leftover snacks to a delighted Korosensei. In exchange, he gives his bubble gum to Nagisa before disappearing at Mach speed.

The Ultimate Guide to Using Emojis for Marketing
Emojis are fun, right? They can add a blip of color and a dash of personality to even the most boring email. They can spruce up a social media post. They can even convey certain messages and emotions better than words.
They’re a great tool to have in your pocket … literally.
(Ha. Or should I say 😂)
What if I told you that these little guys could make a big difference in your click-through rates, open rates, and general engagement levels — that they could breathe life into your brand? That kind of changes the game, huh?
That’s why we’ve compiled this guide. We’re going to cover why to use emojis, how to use them for business, and some popular combinations you can employ in your marketing. Let’s get started! Keep reading, or use the chapter links below to jump around.
What are Emojis?
Emojis are small icons and images created using Unicode Standard. They’re used in text messages, on websites, and as part of other digital communication. The word “emoji” comes from the Japanese e (絵, "picture") and moji (文字, "character").
Emojis can take the form of well-known yellow smileys or common objects like weather, food, animals, and more, and they’re used on desktop and mobile devices.
But, emojis are not emoticons. What’s the difference there?
A Brief History of Emojis
Emojis haven’t been around forever. They’ve barely been around twenty years … 😲
The first emoji was created in 1999 by a coder employed by NTT DoCoMo, a Japanese mobile service provider. He created the first 180 emojis, which were then used by multiple Japanese providers for text messaging and other communications.
In 2010, emojis were incorporated into and standardized by Unicode, allowing them to be used outside of Japan. Throughout the following six years, thousands of emojis were added to the “language”, including Zodiac signs, sports equipment, places of worship, and a variety of skin colors.
As of June 2018, there were over 2,823 emojis on the Unicode Standard list, with 157 new ones introduced this year.
How to Add the Emoji Keyboard
Since you can’t create emojis using your typical text keyboard, you have to download a separate one. It’s actually quite easy. Here’s how.
On Your iPhone
Conveniently so, iPhones have the emoji keyboard built into the operating system. To add the keyboard:
Open Settings
Tap General > Keyboard > Keyboards
Tap Add New Keyboard… > Emoji
To access the keyboard, open your Messages or Mail. Tap the 🌐 next to the microphone, which should change your keyboard. If you have any other keyboards added, you might have to tap the icon a couple times.
This process works for iPads, too.
On Your Android
If you have a newer Android phone, you’ll find your emojis built into your keyboard. But if you have an older model, you’ll need to download a third-party app like Kika, SwiftKey, or Textra.
From there, to apply the new emojis to your keyboard, you’d go to Settings > Language and Input > Virtual Keyboard > Manage Keyboards. Then, select the keyboard you’d like to download.
On Your Mac
To use emojis on your desktop, you can always Google them and then Copy + Paste them into your message. If you use them often, though, this process can get clunky.
Thankfully, there’s an easier way. If you’re typing on your Mac and want to insert an emoji, simply tap Control + Command + Spacebar to pop open the emoji keyboard. Tap the emoji you want to use, or drag and drop if it doesn’t insert automatically.
You can also turn on the emoji keyboard on your Mac by tapping the Apple icon in the top left corner. Then, open System Preferences > Keyboard and click Show Keyboard and Emoji Viewers in Menu Bar.
This places a shortcut in the menu bar, and with one tap, you can access all emojis and symbols.
How nifty is that? 👍🏼
On Your Windows Desktop
The emoji options for Windows are very similar to that for a Mac. For one, you can simple Copy + Paste.
On the other hand, the keyboard shortcut for Windows is Windows Key + Period or Windows Key + Semicolon. This shortcut brings up the built-in keyboard, from which you can tap the emoji you want to use.
Why Use Emojis?
So, you know how to use emojis … but why should you bother? Isn’t it easier just to type out what you want to say? More importantly, aren’t emojis for teenagers and texters?
Not quite.
Here’s why you should use emojis.
Emojis Boost Engagement
Repeat after me: Emojis = Engagement.
It might be a new mantra for you, but it’s true nonetheless. Emojis have been proven to boost engagement levels, click-through rates, and open rates.
Take a look at these 📈(... statistics):
Tweets with emojis saw 25% more engagement, and on Facebook, emojis result in 57% more likes, 33% more comments, and 33% more shares
In a recent study, more than 50% of brands saw an increase in email opens when subject lines included emojis
Push notifications with emojis saw 85% increase in open rates and 9% bump in conversions
Emojis help drive engagement on all variety of digital media: email, mobile, and social media.
Emojis Convey What Words Can’t
Have you ever received a text message that ended with a period? Now, imagine the same sentiment expressed with an exclamation point … or better yet, an emoji.
“I can’t wait.” vs “I can’t wait!” vs “I can’t wait 😁”
The feelings you experience from those three messages are a little different, right? The sentiment is the same, but the conveyed feelings vary.
While emojis can’t necessarily replace words (and we’ll talk about why later), they can definitely give them that little extra umph needed to excite, persuade, or intrigue. They enforce the meaning of your message. They’re the 🍒 on top.
Emojis Give Your Brand Personality
Brands are more than the products they sell or the design of their logos. They’re akin to people, with personality and unique character — which helps consumers connect with and be loyal to them.
Using emojis in your marketing and communications gives your brand personality and identity. Whether you’re fun and youthful or risqué and witty, emojis can help humanize your brand’s identity.
Defining and using that personality in your marketing can also help you boost your brand awareness. Fun brands are known brands. 🎉
Your Guide to Emoji Definitions and Uses
We’ve talked about where emojis originated and why you should use them. Now, we’re going to discuss which ones you should use and how you should use them. Take notes 📝… you never know when some of these may come in handy.
Popular Emojis
Whether you’re using emojis at work or with friends, there are some that everyone knows. We cover a few below.
Laughing Face Emoji 😂
According to EmojiTracker, the 😂 emoji is the most commonly used emoji on Twitter. It’s also the most used emoji based on Apple's data. It’s official name is “Face With Tears of Joy”, and it’s typically used in conjunction with humor or comedy posts.
Heart Emoji ❤️
Next on Apple and EmojiTracker’s lists: ❤️… aptly named the “Red Heart”. This emoji is used in a myriad of ways, most commonly to express affection and love, and it also comes in other shapes and colors. Red is the most popular, though.
Crying Face Emoji 😭
According to Apple, 😭 is the third most used emoji. It’s also the sixth on EmojiTracker. Officially named “Loudly Crying Face”, it’s one of those emojis that has a dual meaning. Sometimes, we see it used “appropriately” — in a sad or negative setting. Other times, though, it can be used ironically or in a “so happy I’m crying” way.
Heart Eyes Emoji 😍
This emoji is fourth on Apple’s and EmojiTracker’s lists. The “Smiling Face With Heart-shaped Eyes” emoji is commonly used when, well, you like what you see. Lots of people use it when responding to pictures they like or people they love.
Thumbs-Up Emoji 👍🏼
The “Thumbs Up Sign” emoji isn’t ranked on Apple or EmojiTracker, but we’re including it anyway. The 👍🏼 is a universal sign for “OK”, and it’s now being used on Facebook, LinkedIn, iMessage, and Slack as a way to confirm receipt or acknowledge a message.
Commonly Misused Emojis
Just because emojis are used often doesn’t mean they’re always used as they were intended or as their title describes. This is where using emojis to communicate might get a little confusing. We cover a few commonly misused emojis — and their proper usage — below.
Dizzy Emoji 💫
At first glance, the “Dizzy” emoji looks like a shooting star. But 💫 actually represents being dizzy or the phenomenon of “seeing stars”.
Hug Emoji 🤗
The “Happy Face With Hugging Hands” is typically mistaken for jazz hands or extreme joy. But if you look closer, 🤗 is actually trying to give you a hug!
Information Desk Emoji 💁
Look closely … the “Information Desk Woman” emoji looks a little sassy. That’s how people typically use 💁, but it’s actually supposed to represent someone holding out their hand asking how they can help.
Tired Emoji 😩
The “Tired” or “Weary” emoji is often used to represent whining or confusion. But it’s actually intended to be the face of someone who’s very tired or sleep-deprived … which, if you look closely, makes a lot of sense.
Bowing Emoji 🙇‍
The first impression of the “Person Bowing Deeply” emoji is that he’s napping or thinking hard about something. But 🙇‍ actually represents dogeza, the Japanese practice of kneeling and bowing to express an apology.
Emojis To Try in Your Marketing
There are literally thousands of emojis that you could use in your marketing and communications. But, according to our own research, there are some that might be more effective than others. Take a look and try them out for yourself.

Using Emojis for Business
We’ve established that emojis are valuable 🛠tools to keep in your marketing toolbelt. They boost engagement, humanize your brand, and extend your communication beyond words. But how can you employ these visual messages? Let’s talk strategy.
Emojis in Social Media
It’s easy to toss an emoji or two into a tweet or Instagram comment, and you should. But how can you use emojis to intentionally drive engagement, click-throughs, and conversions? The answer is simple: Encourage your audience to use them, too.
Here are a few ways to add emojis to your social media strategy and encourage your followers to partake:
Tell your audience to comment with an emoji: “Respond with 👍🏼 if you agree or 👎🏼 if you disagree.”
Ask your audience to describe something using emojis: “Describe your plans for this weekend using only emojis!”
Give your audience an emoji message to decode: “Translate these emojis and be entered to win a prize.”
It’s easy enough to include emojis in your social media posts, but telling your followers to use them too can help boost your overall audience engagement. Emojis are easy to use and require little to no work on behalf of your audience.
For example, instead of having to type out their weekend plans, they’d just have to drop in a ⛳️or 🏕or 🛌 emoji … and you’d still get an engagement.
Emojis in Advertising
Advertising is just as public-facing as social media, but it’s more formal and much more expensive. For that reason, businesses have been slower to adopt emojis into their advertising efforts.
But most of today's consumers, especially millennials, have had enough of the in-your-face, impersonal advertising. They respond better to subtle, personal and emotional messages. Businesses have learned that emojis — despite their size and lack of words — can actually communicate a lot.
How can you employ emojis in your next advertising campaign? Here are some top tips.
1. Make them relevant, and don’t force it. If an emoji (or emojis in general) doesn’t fit with your campaign or brand, don’t use it. Does your audience use them? (Use social intelligence tools to see what your audience is using online.) Have you used them in other communications, such as social media or on your blog? They’ll be easier to immerse in your advertising if they’re a natural fit for your brand.

2. Use them clearly, and don’t leave room for misinterpretation. Emojis are sometimes used outside of their intended purpose, as we’ve seen in this article. That’s OK, but make sure you know the purpose of the emoji you’re using. Ask co-workers if they understand your message. Consider organizing a focus group, or run the advertisement past a sample audience. Be absolutely sure your message communicates exactly what you want it to.

3. Get creative! If your emojis fit with your brand, are used by your audience, and can’t be misinterpreted, have fun with them. Better yet — consider having your own emoji designed, too.

Emojis in Emails
Email marketing, despite its one-to-many communication ratio, should still be personalized to its recipient. Because of this, emojis should be used sparingly and only when you know your audience will receive and respond to them positively.
For example, try not to use emojis for first-time or one-time customers, such as “Welcome!” or “You Left Something in Your Cart!” emails. These consumers might not be familiar with your brand and might be put off by random emoji use.
Emojis in email subject lines have been proven to work about 60% of the time … and by “work”, we mean they boost open rates by about 25%. But when they don’t work, they actually hurt open rates — by the same 60%. So, use emojis sparingly in subject lines, and choose emojis that are relevant to your brand or message.
As we’ve said before, don’t use emojis in your emails if they’re not also on your social media and other digital marketing efforts. Emojis are more natural in email communication if your audience has also seen them elsewhere.
In terms of one-on-one email communications, save emojis for personal, known interactions. If you’ve never met your recipient in person, don’t include an emoji. Don’t use emojis to replace real or authentic messages or emotions. In this case, professionalism always trumps personality.
Emojis in Service
Service is a critical component of the flywheel. It keeps customers happy, encourages them to stick around, and inspires them to talk about your business. Another thing about service? Service is all about connecting with the customer, sharing their burden, and solving their problem.
Emojis can help you do this. Since emojis amplify emotion and feelings, they can help convey authentic service to your customers — if used correctly. For customer service interactions, it’s helpful to include an accurate emoji (i.e. 😄 for “Hello!” or 😲 for “Oh no!”), but don’t rely on the emoji alone. Use it alongside other company-approved messages.

Emojis can help create personal connections to customers and accurately express what you’re thinking and feeling — and how you’d like your customers to feel, too.
