Transformers: Mosaic #623 - "Mind's Eye"
Originally posted on October 17th, 2011
Story - Mike Priest Art - Ed Pirrie Colours - Matt Marshall Letters - Graham Thomson
deviantART | Seibertron | TFW2005 | BotTalk
wada sez: I’ll just leave Pirrie’s summary of what’s going on here: “The human, Hunter O'Nion, had already been turned against his will into a Headmaster component for the Autobot Sunstreaker by Scorponok. The pair were eventually physically disconnected, but when Bombshell learned of the human he kidnapped him and used him as a kind of 'hub' to hack into the Autobot defense systems. This scene is only really meant to illustrate a possibility of what that must have been like for Hunter, since it all happened off-panel.” Sunstreaker and Ratchet appear in vehicle mode in the first panel. Hunter’s distorted mind-state is represented using washed-out newsprint coloring, to distinguish it from the more stylistically-modern present. Further comments from this strip’s creators on deviantART give some context for its creation. Priest said: “(Evil laughter.) I like Hunter, but I like Bombshell more. Besides, Ed and me already were super-nice to Hunter and brought him back in our last Mosaic together! The lad can handle some cruelty.” Pirrie added: “My own interpretation of the story seems to be different to everyone else's. I never really saw it as Bombshell deliberately torturing Hunter's mind. I saw it that Bombshell was just sadistically going about whatever he needed to do to get into the Autobot systems, and Hunter's subconcious was periodically escaping into this fantastical happy place as a coping mechanism. Maybe this is why I considered it a companion piece to that Verity Mosaic (in which we discover Hunter's mind has survived by retreating into cyberspace) when even the writer, Mike, did not.” Priest responded: “Yeah, it can be interpreted either way, really. Heh, this and "Still Life" were written months and months apart, which is why I never considered them companion pieces, but they do work well together, don't they?” Pirrie clarified: “Whereas I first read them back to back, and that was the natural conclusion for me! I guess I'll always be inclined to think of tham as a pair because of that.” See below for clean inks.

Note
If Earthspark wants to really shock everyone with a character, then I think they should add Hunter O'Nion to the human cast.
Okay that'd be fascinating!

Transformers Yuletide Literary Fest - Day 5
Welcome to the Transformers Yuletide Literary Fest! I'll be recommending one or two fics every day until Christmas. Feel free to join in if you'd like (I'm using the tag #tylf2023 for this.) All fics are complete!
(If I can easily find a Tumblr account for the author I'll tag them. If you know of an author who has a Tumblr account and I didn't tag them, please let me know so I can add it! )
Fics in my recommendations will come in two different flavours: tangy and spicy. 😄 As always, curate your own online reading experience, and mind the tags if necessary for your own safety. ♥
Tangy
Title: If Language Were Liquid
Author: @quadrilioquy
Rating: General
Wordcount: 2922
Summary: Bumblebee's voice box is malfunctioning again, and he joins Ratchet and Raf for a perfectly timed lesson on Cybertronian grammar.
Why I love it: I love the fanon idea of Cybertronians being able to add harmonics or additional glyphs (or something along those lines) to their spoken language, something which would come in very handy when they're in alt mode and can't emote the way that they can in bot mode. Plus, language can tell us a lot about how a culture thinks, and we get a glimpse of that here. In this fic, we get a look at what that might mean for names, and how you could use them to modify how you articulate a friend's name. Lovely piece!
Spicy
Title: Autoerotic
Author: @postapocalyptic-cryptic
Rating: Explicit (for human/robot sex)
Wordcount: 1000
Summary: Sunstreaker and Hunter recover what's been lost.
Why I love it: Surprisingly, IDW1 did manage to do a reasonable job at least touching on all of the head-fuckery characters experienced for things that happened to them, and the whole Sunstreaker/Hunter O'Nion headmaster situation was no different. This story delves a little deeper than canon (and obviously veers off in a different direction) but gives us a quick look at one of the possible outcomes of sharing headspace with an alien.

Vote Sunstreaker
I already reblogged this, but I decided to post this as its own post so it gets more attention.
Original poll can be found here.
Let me explain to you all why Sunstreaker is the most pitiful between himself and Cyclonus:
He was kidnapped along with a human teenager - Hunter O'Nion - by shady humans working for Scorponok where none of those same humans received consequences for the unlawful modifications on a child and living being.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The modifications can't be removed and they have each others' memories. -Maximum Dinobots, Issue #5
He is thought to be a literal machine by those humans where he felt them cutting into him, consequently decapitated, and left as a head connecting him as a source for headmasters to connect to. The headmasters were all in his head, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The humans think of him as a literal machine as Sunstreaker screams on feeling every bit of what the humans do to him. -All Hail Megatron, Coda: Replay
His own brother, Sideswipe, didn't care enough in the right way to rescue him. Thus, he was abandoned by his family. (Not only that they have a strained relationship).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sideswipe deciding his brother isn't worth it after spending some of his previous screentime demanding he be sent to Earth. -Transformers Spotlight: Sideswipe
In the aftermath, Sunstreaker developed PTSD causing him to betray the Autobots so the humans would suffer just as he had. (The deal was that the Decepticons could take over if they slaughtered a bunch of humans). Paired with the guilt of the Autobots' situation on Cybertron and his trauma, he later admitted to Ironhide he was suicidal when he prepared himself to buy the Autobots time from an Insecticon swarm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This apparently has never occurred before and none of them know what kind of consequences there are to a Cybertronian and human mind merging. -All Hail Megatron, Coda: Replay
-All Hail Megatron, Coda: Replay
Tumblr media
Susntreaker reveals how he wants the humans to suffer. -All Hail Megatron, Coda: Replay
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Him wanting to die. -All Hail Megatron, Coda: Replay
Tumblr media
-All Hail Megatron, Issue #9
Time skip to Ironhide's resurrection after the Autobots return to Earth and Ironhide's death. Ironhide finds Sunstreaker in the chasm still alive and replaying his trauma at the hands of the humans all this time. Sunstreaker tells Ironhide he wants to redeem/better himself since he betrayed the Autobots. Ironhide has no idea what the former is talking about since it turns out he doesn't remember what happened to Sunstreaker or the Autobots.
Tumblr media
Sunstreaker remembering everything that happened to him. -All Hail Megatron, Coda: Replay.
Tumblr media
His memory was on a loop. -Transformers: Ironhide, Any Old Iron
Tumblr media
Ironhide doesn't remember anything from the last 4 million years. -Transformers: Ironhide, Any Old Iron
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sunstreaker wanting to atone for his actions, but it goes unappreciated. Transformers: -Ironhide, Any Old Iron
He was disabled and in a wheelchair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Susntreaker's legs don't work. -Transformers: Ironhide, Any Old Iron
Once Sunstreaker and Ironhide returned to Earth, the former expressed literal discomfort at being in the place of his Trauma's origins.
Tumblr media
Obvious discomfort. -Space Opera-Final Tableaux: Orphans of the Helix
Sunstreaker tries to include himself in social circles, but there is an exclusion with a loser atmosphere to him. The others also remind him he's a traitor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's left out. -Transformers: Chaos, Lamentations
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cliffjumper reminds Sunstreaker he's a traitor. -Transformers: Chaos, Lamentations
He's incredibly lonely even though he's surrounded by allies.
Tumblr media
He's very lonely. -Transformers: Chaos, Lamentations
And in addition, in real life he's a lesser known character in comparison to Sideswipe with the most minor cameos and some not knowing who he is or that he's Sideswipe's brother.
This is man is a true waterlogged cat.
Vote for Sunstreaker.

Transformers: Infiltration #4
Read Date: February 19, 2023 Cover Date: April 2006 ● Writer: Simon Furman ● Art: E.J. Su ● Colorist: John Rauch ● Letterer: Tom B. Long ● Editor: Chris Ryall ◦ Dan Taylor ●
Tumblr media
**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● (cover) we've got Bumblebee hanging off a tank's cannon--I'm not sure if it's a real tank or a Transformer--with Ratchet looking on in concern. The purple and gray flyer… is that Starscream? (nope, it's Blitzwing) ● pg 1. Three years ago, Akron Ohio, Verity having trouble with placement in foster care. Her caseworker seems amazing. ● pg 2. Now in NW Nebraska, Verity is lowering herself down a shaft of some kind while the boys watch from above. ● pg 3. Ratchet and Bumblebee--or at least their human holoform things--are up there as well ● gah, holo-Bumblebee has a creepy smile as well!
Tumblr media
● basically they're running an errand for Prowl to get evidence for something that will warrant an alert status upgrade ● the three humans are so tiny next to the Decepticon equipment. ● pg 9. Verity is about to open something… ● pg 10. uhh skeletal remains of someone in uniform ● pg 11. this really spooks Verity but she pulls up her angry outer shell to deal with her fear--just like her caseworker saw 3 years ago ● pg 12. Ratchet and Bumblebee are so cute
Tumblr media
● eep! But Skywarp and Blitzwing come at them from above! ● the flyers are there to destroy the base ● Ratchet and Bumblebee tell Hunter, Jimmy, and Verity to abort stat. Verity wants to check one more thing first… ● aw! Bumblebee has a cannon that pops out of his hood ● Bumblebee wings (heh) Skywarp with his laser, while Ratchet takes on Blitzwing ● Ratchet uses Blitzwing's paranoia/overactive optic sensors to spook him with a well-placed flash that causes the jet to veer into some trees ● Ratchet goes to make sure his opponent is out of the fight, but he takes a huge blast to the chest ● Gah! who's the tank?! (I'm still learning) ● yiiiikes I think Verity just walked in on Megatron ● 👏👏👏👏👏
Synopsis: Three years ago, a young Verity Carlo meets with a social worker after running away from yet another foster home. Her social worker sees right through Verity's tough façade and states that all she sees is a girl "in a world of hurt and pain".
In the present day, Hunter O'Nion, and Jimmy Pink watch as Verity rappels into the depths of an abandoned Decepticon fortress in the wilderness of Nebraska. Using their holomatter avatars, Ratchet and Bumblebee watch on; Ratchet is adamant that when this escapade is over, the humans are going home, while Bumblebee warns the trio to watch for booby traps.
As the two boys follow Verity into the shaft and split up to investigate, Bumblebee confides to Ratchet that he thinks that the Autobot medic might be right—but to change Prowl's mind, they'll need hard evidence that something's wrong… and the humans fall into the "acceptable losses" category if it means getting that evidence.
In Dallas, Texas, Drake meets with a group of humans in the Epsilon Holdings building—a front for the shadowy group known as the Machination led by Abraham Dante. Jolly reports on recent events: a series of anomalous vehicle attacks throughout the southwest United States have led the group to conclude that the "visitors" are moving into the next stage of their operations. Having received a homing signal from their deceased operative Stoker, Drake and his team of operatives are dispatched to "accelerate" their "acquisition strategy…"
Deep inside the Decepticon bunker, Verity discovers a strange sight: a jumbled series of glowing green tubes, each one big enough to hold a human. Ignoring Jimmy's warnings, Verity goes ahead and opens one… and is immediately confronted by the gruesome sight of a rotted corpse wearing a military uniform. Despite the shock, Verity manages to compose herself and move on; as she does so, however, she's unaware that, topside, the two Autobots have visitors of their own in the shape of Skywarp and Blitzwing. Paying no heed to the Autobots, the two fliers launch a massive bombing run on the base, forcing the two Autobots to outrun the explosions!
Ratchet yells for the humans to evacuate the base as fast as possible; while Jimmy and Hunter comply, Verity, determined to make up for losing her cool earlier, ignores Ratchet's orders and goes to investigate the last section of the base. As she does so, battle breaks out as the Autobots try to buy time for the humans—Bumblebee pits his superior processor speed against Skywarp's teleportation power and comes out on top, while Ratchet shoots Blitzwing out of the sky. When the medic goes to make sure that his opponent is downed for good, however, he's not so lucky, and is quickly taken out by a volley from his opponent's tank mode…
…and, underground, Verity discovers that she's not the only occupant of the Decepticon fortress as she enters the last room of the base and comes face to face with its other occupant: Megatron!

[ID: two panels from the IDW transformer comic infiltration. The first panel is of an ambulance pulling up in front of Verity Carlo and Hunter O’Nion. The second is a smiling headshot of Ratchet’s holoform. End ID]
I can’t believe Ratchet’s boring holoform design is from issue ZERO of the 2005 run and it did not get updated ONCE

The Kids^TM in IDW phase 1 were very obviously audience surrogates, which makes it fucking wild that when you see them again in phase 2, Jimmy is debatably a war criminal, Verity’s got radiation poisoning, and Hunter’s been unceremoniously killed off-screen

Transformers: Mosaic #606 - "Still Life"

wada sez: Canonically, Hunter O’Nion died in the final main issue of All Hail Megatron. The horror of this strip comes from its suggestion that Hunter in fact survived, continuing to exist in a tortured state for years. The phrasing of Verity’s narration, which alludes to then-unseen future adventures, is reminiscent of similar narration from Simon Furman’s pseudocanonical Mosaic strip “Hail And Farewell”. Priest and Pirrie returned for another strip on this theme, which I've bumped up to tomorrow—peep below for a preview, along with Verity’s character model and some clean inks.

Dear Vector Prime, What happened to Dante after Scorponok was taken into custody?
Dear Missing Machinations,
Following Scorponok's arrest and binary un-bonding, Abraham Dante was taken into Skywatch custody for "further study". For a brief period before the Great Decepticon Invasion, Earth had very little overt Cybertronian activity. However, Jimmy Pink had heard about Dante from Hunter O'Nion and decided to infiltrate Skywatch to keep a closer eye on him.
He discovered a small group of Skywatch guards, all ex-Machination, that were funneling information about new weapons to Dante's cell. Jimmy forcefully extracted the location of the new weapons from a guard, and found himself in a warehouse full of small grey, double-barreled tanks. One of them transformed, announcing himself as Fasttrack, Scorponok's shadow lieutenant on Earth!
Fasttrack had submitted to one of Scorponok's early experiments in cloning, and upon his master's arrest, now responded to mental commands from Dante. In fact, Skywatch had unwittingly become the new Machination base of operations, and Jimmy's snooping had forced their hand. As Dante-as-Fasttrack grabbed Jimmy and prepared to kill him, a mysterious blue and black car slammed through the warehouse wall, demolishing several Fasttrack drones and offering Jimmy an escape.
The car was a Cybertronian, calling himself "Punch", and had been undercover as a Decepticon in Dante's secret organization, watching Skywatch much like Jimmy had. Punch explained that Dante hoped to use Fasttrack clone tanks to destabilize and disable Earth military systems with a "Cosmic Rust" cannon, setting up a fledgling Neo-Machination as the only source of weaponry on the planet. Wanting to prevent a legacy of terror, Jimmy and Punch joined forces.
Unfortunately, during an attack on Skywatch, Punch was shot through by a Cosmic Rust cannon. Distraught at having watched his friend disintegrate before his eyes, Jimmy fled back to their secret base at his garage—but not long after, a blue and black car pulled up outside. It was too good to be true; at its back was an entire convoy of Fasttrack drones, and none other than Dante himself stepped out from behind the wheel. The car transformed into a Decepticon named "Counterpunch"—who revealed to Jimmy that Punch was naught but a fabrication, a guise under which to flush out any humans who knew about the Machination.
With Counterpunch's blaster squarely aimed at Jimmy, Dante converted to Headmaster form to gloat—but the very moment he clicked into place atop Fasttrack’s shoulders, Counterpunch spun and fired, fatally wounding the Decepticon. And in that same instant, Fasttrack himself opened fire. As Counterpunch slowly turned to rust, he told Jimmy that he had used Dante's clone technology on himself, and that the death Jimmy had witnessed was that of a "Punch" clone. Counterpunch apologized to Jimmy and thanked him for their brief friendship.
Skywatch confiscated the remaining Fasttrack drones. Jimmy, uncertain if he lost one friend or two, became increasingly bittered about Cybertronians on Earth. Dante, abruptly separated from a binary bond, eventually found himself at E.D.C high-security in a catatonic state, where he mutters in a quiet voice: "Scorponok... Zarak... prepare... confront... repel..."
