Where to stay
Hotels
Advantages: sometimes includes breakfast, glamour (?), more privacy if you have your own room, more ethical & dependable than Airbnb
Must check to see if these hotels have rooms with two twins.
Hotel Bachaumont (2e) - they have the best breakfast
Never tried:
Hôtel du Sentier (2e) - I think I want to stay here most but it’s $$$. A single room is about $300 per night. A double room is about $500 per night.
Then again maybe Seven Hotel - get room 505 for the balcony & the view. Basic rooms are under $200/night.
Amastan (8e)-  A room with one queen and two twin beds, breakfast not included, would be about $1800 for 5 nights. A room with one queen and a balcony is about $1500.
Hotel National des Arts et Metiers (3e) - i like the roof.
Babel in Belleville (20e - not central Paris) - nice rooms, less expensive
Hotel Rochechouart (9e) - art deco hotel in Montmartre. INTERESTED. Under $200/night
Apartment rentals
Advantages: living room to hang out in, sometimes a terrace, can keep food and drinks, live more like a local, usually less expensive than hotel, might have washer/dryer
We stayed here, a lofty apartment in a private courtyard in the 11th and we LOVED it. Alas, it’s not big enough for a large group.
Four bed flat in Montorgueil (2e) via Airbnb, $350/night - 6 NIGHT MINIMUM. One set of bunkbeds. $87.50 pp per night
Three beds + sofa bed in the Marais via Airbnb, $500+/night
Four bedrooms in Republique (11e) via Haven In,  $4200 for 5 nights = $210 pp per night
Sleek 3 bedroom in 1st - 2 king size beds, 2 twin. About $1K night/total
Hybrid
TINAH, 10e (scroll to bottom of page to book - don’t use the red book now button). 4 bedroom. About $1000 each for 5 nights.

Sights: Paris is one of the world’s great cities and needs little introduction but it can be a little overwhelming.  I think there are six big sites and they can all be viewed in a rush in about 2 hours: Notre Dame, the Louvre Pyramid, the Champs Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower and Sacré Coeur.  You can find my guided tour of these here.
Sainte Chapelle
Musée de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine
As Notre Dame is sadly currently closed, an alternative is the Sainte Chapelle with its beautiful glass windows and gothic architecture.  Elsewhere, if you want to see some more gothic architecture then the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine contains the life-size models of cathedral frescoes refurbished by Viollet le Duc, paintings copied from endangered churches and brilliant models of 20th century buildings in France, including a life-size Le Corbusier flat.  This is one of my favourite museums in the city.
Musée d’Orsay
The Musée d’Orsay is my favourite art gallery for its combination of brilliant architecture, excellent impressionist paintings and top views from the top floor. Buy a ticket in advance and get there early to avoid the queues.
The Centre Pompidou contains the National Museum of Modern Art, Cinemas and other exhibitions.  It is free to go in to the entrance hall and see the architecture which is very flexible and avoids the need for internal pillars as everything is hung on the outside.  The Modern Art is very good and worth the entrance fee.  And the view from the bar at the top is excellent too, particularly with a glass of fizz.
Chateau de Versailles
If you fancy a day out, the Chateau de Versailles is about 40 minutes by RER.  It’s impressive today so must have been even more so when it was first built.  The state rooms are very busy but the history of the building on the ground floor is well presented and you can find your own space in the gardens, particularly in the Petit and Grand Trianons.  Worth booking a ticket online to avoid the queues as you go in.
Other museums and sights with my personal, brief review:
Louvre – too big, too full, too badly labeled – other museums are available.
Orangerie – great if you like Monet but expensive/uninspiring otherwise.
Musée d’Arts & Metiers – a rather dull science museum.
Petit Palais – free with vast rooms with some interesting pieces & a good coffee shop.
Jardin de Luxembourg – free and great for an afternoon walk and picnic.
Canal St Martin – a cool, somewhat hipster oasis in the city with bars along it but also space for a picnic on its banks.
Galeries Lafayette – good for luxury shopping but mainly worth visiting for the great architecture and the roof top view from its terrace.
Eiffel Tower – increasingly crowded but iconic. However, the problem is that when you’re up the Eiffel Tower you can’t see the Eiffel Tower so I prefer taking in the iconic view from the Trocadéro or Pompidou Centre, particularly when it shimmers at the top of each hour at night.
It is worth checking the Paris Tourist Information Office for details about what exhibitions are free or free on the first Sunday of the month.
Travel: The metro system in Paris is pretty comprehensive, particularly when supported by the fast trains (RER) and the bus network.  When flying in to the city you will most likely come in to Charles de Gaulle airport.  The easiest way in to the city is to take RER B which you need a special ticket for (€10.30) and takes 30-40 minutes.
If you are arriving by Eutostar train in to Gare du Nord you are instantly into the city centre and on to the central metro zones.
Once in the city, there are a variety of options, all of which can be bought at machines at most of the stations:
The cheapest way is to buy a Carnet – book of 10 tickets each valid for one journey and works out at €1.49 per journey.
If you are doing more than 5 journeys in a single day, then a Mobilis pass is good value at €7.50 for coverage of the central zones.
If you are here for several days and planning on a trip out to the suburb (including Versailles and Charles de Gaulle Airport) then a Forfait Paris Visite can be good value.
A good App to download is the RATP app which covers all the travel options in the city in French and English.
Jardin du Luxembourg
Canal Saint Martin
Accommodation:  There are hundreds of accommodation options across Paris but it is worth noting that, compared to other European capitals, rooms can be smaller and a little more expensive.  It is often better value to have the breakfast at the local café than at the hotel.  There are some bargains out there: for example. when visiting before moving here we stayed largely in the 10e & 11e arrondissements, including:
Generator Hostel: As with all the Generator Hostels, this is more like a 2* hotel with ensuite shower rooms, double beds and modern design. The public areas include a hipster bar and work rooms.
The International Hotel: recently upgraded, small but good quality rooms on a quiet back street close to the action.
Hotel Alhambra: set around a courtyard, the rooms are a good size and well (if cheaply) refurbished.
If you are looking to stay in the 5e Arrondissement – on the Left Bank and nearer where I live now – then I would look at Hotel Observatoire Luxembourg and Hotel Select or for a more budget option Hotel Pierre Nicole.
Food & Drink: There are so many options here I have created two separate posts about Where to Drink in Paris and Where to Eat in Paris.
As mentioned elsewhere, for good value drink it is worth downloading the Mister Good Beer app which tells you where the cheapest pint is near to you.
Further Reading & Listening:
Guide books: The Lonely Planet for Paris is small enough to fit in a pocket but contains enough information for a first visit to Paris.
Online it is worth checking out SortiraParis.com which lists the latest special events in the city and is a good source of up to the minute information.
Podcast/Blog: The Earful Tower has a collection of podcasts, videos and blog posts about Paris which help you see the alternative side of the capital.  My favourite posts include the list of bars and free things to do in Paris.
Paris in the spring: some tips for what to see, where to stay & how to save some money. Sights: Paris is one of the world’s great cities and needs little introduction but it can be a little overwhelming.

THE HOTTEST HOTEL OPENINGS OF 2017
As we reach the end of 2017 it’s time to look back and let the light shine on the hottest openings of the year. The list is a combination of the most viewed addresses on petitepassport.com and my personal opinion; spots I think you really have to visit because the creative people behind it didn’t stick with the old, but came up with an entire new and innovative perspective of what a hotel should be like.
  1.Santa Clara 1728 in Lisbon
    Treat all of the senses
Joao, the owner of Santa Clara 1728, but also of Casas na Areia, Cabanas no Rio and Casa no Tempo, worked closely together with architect Manuel Aires Mateus to ensure they design their places in such a way your senses will be spoiled in the best way possible. And they do that with a close connection to nature. In Casas na Areia for example the floor is made of sand which make you start whispering in a second. At Santa Clara 1728 all of the rooms have a splendid view over the river in Lisbon (and the beautiful sunset and sunrise skies), when you walk barefoot over the wooden floor you will feel the floor heating and the bath is made out of Lisbon marble and is surrounded by candles at night. Read my review here.
  2.Manon les Suites in Copenhagen
    Be green
At Manon les Suites of Guldsmeden Hotels they do not only have a super pretty pool patio surrounded by lots of plants which makes a stunning picture, but behind the scenes they make the hotel as eco-friendly as possible. For their guests, but also for the locals and the people they work with. For example they use big 500ml bottles of shampoos of their own eco-conscious beauty brand instead of tiny little plastic bottles they throw away. The mini-bar is filled with Danish eco-products. And they serve fresh local food in the restaurant on the top floor. Read my review here.
  3.Mi Casa en Lisboa
    Stay at a local’s house
There’s a lot to say about McDonaldization, that cities like Barcelona, Amsterdam and Venice are being overwhelmed by tourists who just go to the same stores, hotels, restaurants wherever they are. What’s the purpose of travel then? Luckily we, everyone who reads my website including myself, who love travel, seek out to find more honest experiences in the cities they go to. A good example is it to stay at a local’s house such as that of Maria called Mi Casa en Lisboa. Beautifully decorated, but as she knows everything about local markets, workshops to do, Portuguese chefs she knows very well and invites into her home to cook for the guests, you’re experiencing Lisbon more as a local. Read my review here.
  4.The Slow in Bali
    Slow down
The Slow, as the name already suggests, is all about slowing down. We are all running around with a never-ending to-do list in our heads while trying to keep up with the news, social media and messages on our phone. I like to see the development of hotels being designed in such a way that it slows you down. The hotel room at The Slow for example only has the necessities and is designed in a minimal way. There’s no tv, but there are coffee table books to read. The art, the neutral colors and the lack of distractions makes you feel rested and relaxed. Read my review here.
  5.Parc Broekhuizen in Leersum
    Get out of the city
Another development in hospitality is to make beautiful places outside of the city, surrounded by nature. I feel very strong that there’s a counter-movement to our ‘always-on-mentality’. We can’t be plugged in all the time. In order to be creative we need to be un-plugged and be in nature for example. Parc Broekhuizen is located in a beautiful castle close to Utrecht, surrounded by nature and lots of walking/biking routes. The hotel rooms feel like retreats (see picture above: apart from the bath, the four-pillar bed and the view, there’s also a fireplace) and there’s a superb restaurant on the ground floor. Read my review here.
6.Hotel National des Arts et Metiers in Paris
    Teaming-up
I really like to see inspiring love-stories of two or more hotspots coming together. In the case of Hotel National des Arts et Metiers that is: Le Cle Group of Hotel Bachaumont, Julien Cohen of Grazia and Pizza Chic and Jean-Pierre Lopes and Thomas Delafon of Bambou and Le Tres Honore. Together they’ve created an all-in-one concept created by the best of the best in their field. As a guest you know you will receive the best service in the hotel, the best food in the restaurant and the best cocktails in the bar. Read my review here.
  7.Soho House in Barcelona
    Be there without being there
For me a hotel has to be better than my home, has to surprise me in a way and needs to be there before I think I need someone. I will explain more. At home I have a very nice shower so if I stay in a hotel with a tiny little shower head with only three drops of water I’ll feel a little bit of agitation in the sense of saying to myself ‘my shower at home is better’. As a hotel you don’t want your guests to even think this and Soho House knows exactly to get those little agitations out of the way because they have thought about everything and then added another layer of extras to it. For example: you get 7 different kind of shampoos to choose from in the shower, there’s a make-up bag full of things you forget often as a frequent traveller like a razor or toothpaste and there’s even a world-adaptor for international visitors. Then they are there for you without being overly protective. When a thought is about to pop up in your head – ‘where’s the entrance’ – they already open the door. Thank you for setting the tone! Read my review here.
  8.Casa Cook in Kos
    Beach retreat
It’s really hard for me to go somewhere and stay at that exact place for a week. I always feel I need to discover more although I know I’ll feel more relaxed and rested if I just surrender to a slower pace. Pick up a book, listen to some music, take the time to enjoy a chocolate fondant. At Casa Cook Kos there’s not much more to do then just that. In a super inspiring environment. We’ve stayed at the beach, at our own private pool villa and had the holiday of the year. Read my review here.
9.Vipp Shelter and Vipp Loft in Sweden/Denmark
    Experience your favorite brand
As the owner of Vipp said to me: “Disney has Disneyland, Lego has Legoland, why don’t we have Vipp Hotels?” Vipp is known for their famous pedal bin and they make lots of other products. Nowadays we live in an experience-world. And that’s why they’ve created two hotel rooms. A Vipp Shelter, a nature retreat in Sweden. And Vipp Loft above the headquarters of the company. Other examples are for example Belgian design brand Muller van Severen who build their exact home in Miami for Art Basel two weeks ago and rented their own home in Gent via Airbnb. Muji is gonna open their first shelter in the new year. And Monocle has its own cafe in London – also around the corner of their head office. What’s next? A Petite Passport hotel?
10.1 Hotels Brooklyn Bridge in New York
    Eco-conscious
Nowadays you can’t be opening a hotel without thinking about the effects it has on nature. Innovative hotels like 1 Hotels are rethinking every step of the hotel business and inserted solutions in a pretty way. For example: you don’t receive a plastic keycard anymore, there are big bottles of shampoo and bath gel in the bathroom to reduce the waste of the tiny bottles and they have a vertical garden in the lobby. And that’s only the beginning. Read my review here.

THE BEST OF OCTOBER
My highlight of October was definitely the visit to Vipp Shelter and Vipp Loft this week (will share all of it on my website soon). It makes me really grateful that they’ve invited Petite Passport to be the first media to write a review about it and now I can recommend it to you, my dear readers! It’s never my goal to collect as many spots on my site or in the guides as possible, I want to present the best and most inspiring design spots with you. Everyday I do research and when I’m visiting cities I go to all of the places I have on my list but only the best ones make it to my site and to the guides. I hope I can make you happy with lots of beautiful recommendations in the future!
For now let’s look back at the most popular spots on my site in October. Put them on your travel-wish-list too!
1.Hotel National des Arts et Metiers in Paris
    2.Sans Pere in London
    3.Looksee Looksee in Singapore
    4.Arck in Sint-Niklaas
    5.Cafe Ineko in Paris
The most popular guide of last month is The London Guide printed.
