Hoy 28 de marzo de 1995, Big L lanzó su álbum debut, "Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous", a través del sello discográfico Columbia Records. El álbum fue muy bien recibido por la crítica y ha sido aclamado como uno de los mejores álbumes de rap de la década de 1990.

Big L aka The Legendary L fue un rapero estadounidense nacido en Harlem, Nueva York, el 30 de mayo de 1974. Su nombre real era Lamont Coleman. Empezó su carrera en la música a finales de los años 80 y se convirtió en un miembro destacado de la escena Hip Hop underground de Nueva York en los años 90 y parte fundamental del grupo D.I.T.C. (Diggin' In The Crates).

"Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous" presenta la habilidad lírica de Big L y su estilo de rap agresivo y callejero. El álbum cuenta con producciones de artistas como Lord Finesse, Buckwild y Showbiz, y presenta colaboraciones de raperos como Jay-Z, Kid Capri, Grand Daddy I.U., entre otros. Las letras del álbum tratan temas como la vida en las calles, la violencia, el sexo y las drogas.

Desafortunadamente, la carrera de Big L fue truncada cuando fue asesinado a tiros en 1999 en Harlem, a la edad de 24 años. A pesar de su corta carrera, su legado ha influido en muchos artistas de rap posteriores y ha sido considerado como un verdadero icono del hip hop.

 Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous

El Hip Hop en Queens, Nueva York, en 1995 fue una época de gran creatividad y actividad. Queens era el hogar de algunos de los artistas de hip hop más influyentes de la época, como Nas, Mobb Deep, LL Cool J y Kool G Rap.

Ese año se lanzan álbumes como, "The Infamous" de Mobb Deep,  "Mr. Smith" de LL Cool J, "4, 5, 6" de Kool G Rap o "Hold It Down" de Das EFX.

Nine es un rapero estadounidense originario del Bronx, Nueva York, que se dio a conocer a mediados de la década de 1990. Su nombre real es Derrick Keyes y nació el 19 de septiembre de 1969. En 1995, Nine lanzó su álbum debut "Nine Livez" a través del sello discográfico Profile Records. El álbum fue producido por un equipo de productores que incluía a Rob Lewis y Tony Stoute. "Nine Livez" incluye canciones como "Whutcha Want?", "Any Emcee", y "The Cypha".

El álbum fue bien recibido por los críticos de música y ayudó a establecer a Nine como uno de los raperos emergentes más prometedores de la escena hip hop de la década de 1990. La canción "Whutcha Want?" en particular fue un éxito comercial y se convirtió en una canción emblemática del sonido de rap de Nueva York de mediados de los 90.

"Any Emcee", lanzado el 28 de marzo de 1995. La canción muestra en gran medida la línea de bajo de "I'll Be Around" de The Spinners, su posición más alta fue el puesto 21 en Hot Dance Music / Maxi-Singles Sales. "Ova Confident" fue otro sencillo pero no hizo parte de las versiones lanzadas a nivel mundial. Los tres sencillos tienen videos musicales promocionales filmados y lanzados.

Nine - Any Emcee

Allmusic le dio al álbum un sólido 3 de un posible 5 estrellas llamando al álbum "Lejos de ser un clásico, Nine Livez es un álbum subestimado de un artista subestimado". Rap Reviews le dio al álbum una crítica más favorable, dándole 8.0 de 10 posibles y llamándolo "uno de los mejores álbumes de 1995, si no de toda la década".

Nine - Whutcha Want

Nine Livez alcanzó el puesto 90 en Billboard 200 y el puesto 18 en Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, alcanzando ambas posiciones el 25 de marzo de 1995. El álbum fue producido por Rob Lewis para Fed Productions y Tony Stoute para Dead President Productions.

En 1995, la escena de rap en The Bronx y en Nueva York en general estaba en pleno auge. El género estaba experimentando un resurgimiento, impulsado por artistas como Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Notorious B.I.G. y Jay-Z. Los artistas de la costa oeste como Tupac y Snoop Dogg también estaban en la cima de su popularidad en ese momento.
