Canon to live preview new LabelStream LS2000 digital label press at drupa

Canon has announced its commitment to become a significant player in the label and packaging markets with the first live preview outside Japan of the new LabelStream LS2000 water-based digital label press, set for 2025 availability. This announcement was made during the pre-drupa media conference in Dusseldorf in late March.
The LabelStream LS2000, Canon’s inaugural water-based inkjet label press, leverages innovative Canon technologies designed for industrial-scale label printing. Slated for release in the EMEA region in 2025, this press prints in CMYK plus white on self-adhesive substrates and uses a new ink set compliant with food safety standards. At drupa, visitors can witness live label production on paper and film media, with labels ready for varnishing, die-cutting, and slitting on a nearline converting device from Grafisk Maskinfabrik. Print samples from Canon's Edale FL3 flexographic label press will also be available.
Canon will introduce a concept for a sheetfed single-pass, industrial-scale digital corrugated press, targeting corrugated packaging converters. This press aims to deliver offset-like print quality at a 1.7m print width, productivity of up to 8,000 sqm/hr, and new levels of cost-efficiency. Attendees can view a 3D model, print samples, and technology animations of this system.
For those interested in digital printing on corrugated materials, live production of packaging prototypes and short-run promotional packaging will be demonstrated on Canon’s large format Arizona and Colorado printers. These solutions cater to packaging converters and print service providers, enabling personalized, short-run, on-demand packaging production.
Other attractions at the Canon stand
Apart from the LabelStream LS2000, Canon will showcase several other solutions, including the European debut of the new varioPRINT iX1700 sheetfed inkjet press, which will be available in 2025.
Canon will highlight the latest additions to the ProStream and ColorStream ranges of high-speed, web-fed inkjet printers: the ProStream 2000 series and the ColorStream 8200.
“The ProStream 2000 is 20% shorter than the ProStream 3000, so it makes an ideal solution (11:45) for customers that cannot accommodate the larger press,” Hans Schmidbauer, director, of marketing & innovation, commercial print, Canon EMEA said.
Canon will display the new Arizona 2300 FLXflow flatbed wide format printer with PRISMAelevate XL, the new imagePROGRAF PRO series for photo and fine art printing, and the new imagePROGRAF GP series for poster production.
Rounding out the exhibits on the stand will be Canon imagePRESS V series color printers, the varioPRINT TITAN and QUARTZ series monochrome printers, as well as the Colorado M series and UVgel Print Factory together with Canon large format technical documentation systems – all driven by the comprehensive PRISMA suite of production workflow solutions.

Heidelberg will unveil the new-generation Speedmaster XL 106 press during drupa 2024, set to be held from 28 May to 6 June in Dusseldorf, Germany. The press boasts a higher print speed of up to 21,000 sheets per hour, AI-supported assistance systems, and enhanced Push to Stop functions.
With the latest generation Speedmaster XL 106, autonomous printing is now viable in packaging production, thanks to the enhanced Push to Stop concept. This advancement allows for complete automation of complex production parameters in packaging and label printing.
“We anticipate that a high-volume packaging producer or wet-glue label manufacturer will very soon achieve a benchmark of 100 million sheets per year. This figure represents a 20% increase on the 85 million sheets currently being produced by today’s industry leaders,” Markus Leichtle, senior manager of industrial packaging at Heidelberg, said at the pre-drupa media conference in Dusseldorf from March 25-27.
“The new peak performance Speedmaster XL 106 cuts print production costs significantly, which makes our customers in the commercial, packaging, and label printing sectors more competitive,” Ludwin Monz, CEO of Heidelberg, said. “Compared to the previous generation, we expect users who produce packaging in the 70 x 100 cm format to achieve an increase in overall productivity of up to 20%.”

During the session, Monz delved into the global trends that have significantly shaped and influenced the printing sector over the past two decades. He highlighted the pivotal role of digitalization, the shortage of skilled labor, the urgent need to address global warming, and the impact of inflation and market consolidation on industry dynamics.
“Just the last couple of years, we have seen a significant increase in all kinds of costs, including labor, energy, but also in raw materials. And as a result, there's a market consolidation going on in the printing industry,” Monz said.
He said that customers now expect solutions that help them to increase productivity, which results in a reduction of their cost per printed sheet. Secondly, they want to relieve operators by using automation. “So, automation is the answer to the shortage of skilled workers, and that applies to the entire print value chain,” Monz added.
And lastly, Monz said, customers expect solution providers to help them save resources, which also helps reduce costs.

How to buy or sell?

Heidelberg will unveil the new-generation Speedmaster XL 106 press during drupa 2024, set to be held from 28 May to 6 June in Dusseldorf, Germany. The press boasts a higher print speed of up to 21,000 sheets per hour, AI-supported assistance systems, and enhanced Push to Stop functions.
With the latest generation Speedmaster XL 106, autonomous printing is now viable in packaging production, thanks to the enhanced Push to Stop concept. This advancement allows for complete automation of complex production parameters in packaging and label printing.
“We anticipate that a high-volume packaging producer or wet-glue label manufacturer will very soon achieve a benchmark of 100 million sheets per year. This figure represents a 20% increase on the 85 million sheets currently being produced by today’s industry leaders,” Markus Leichtle, senior manager of industrial packaging at Heidelberg, said at the pre-drupa media conference in Dusseldorf from March 25-27.
“The new peak performance Speedmaster XL 106 cuts print production costs significantly, which makes our customers in the commercial, packaging, and label printing sectors more competitive,” Ludwin Monz, CEO of Heidelberg, said. “Compared to the previous generation, we expect users who produce packaging in the 70 x 100 cm format to achieve an increase in overall productivity of up to 20%.”

During the session, Monz delved into the global trends that have significantly shaped and influenced the printing sector over the past two decades. He highlighted the pivotal role of digitalization, the shortage of skilled labor, the urgent need to address global warming, and the impact of inflation and market consolidation on industry dynamics.
“Just the last couple of years, we have seen a significant increase in all kinds of costs, including labor, energy, but also in raw materials. And as a result, there's a market consolidation going on in the printing industry,” Monz said.
He said that customers now expect solutions that help them to increase productivity, which results in a reduction of their cost per printed sheet. Secondly, they want to relieve operators by using automation. “So, automation is the answer to the shortage of skilled workers, and that applies to the entire print value chain,” Monz added.
And lastly, Monz said, customers expect solution providers to help them save resources, which also helps reduce costs.
