I think an important part of wei yings external character arc that gets overlooked is that wei ying operates for most of the story believing that while he would sacrifice himself for those he loves without hesitation, he believes the sentiment is not returned. He will sacrifice himself but would not ask and does not expect that in return from his loved ones and he is repeatedly proven wrong.

That's why the reveal at the end of Jiang Cheng's sacrifice is so important even though wwx doesn't learn of it.

Wwx sacrifices himself for everyone and in turn those same people do the same for him.

Whether by giving up status, enduring bodily harm, or even death.

Mianmian gives up status for him and with it the protection of her sect.

Wen Qing and Wen Ning give up their lives.

Jiang Yanli gives up her life.

Lan Wangi gives up everything short of death, or at least tries to.

And Jiang Cheng gives up his life to save Wei Ying. He expects to die for his brother.

And thats important because the debt he owed Jiang Fengmian would have transferred to the new sect leader, Jiang Cheng, as the debt was owed to the sect, not just the person. So the person wwx likely feels the most subservient and indebted to willingly gave up his life for him.

And I think people like to overlook that detail by making it out as wwx being the only one sacrificing himself and so the Jiang didn't really love him enough Yada yadda.

I guess the main point I'd THESE PEOPLE NEED TO STOP TRYING TO DIE FOR EACH OTHER OMG
