thinks. riptide captains. (general character arc spoilers i guess idk, gun mention, diaper stuff - the autism kicked in so this is really long skskdjf)

Gill:

Is the youngest. Regresses by accident one day because he feels completely safe surrounded by his crew. He’s barely older than a newborn, smiling and clapping and making grabby hands instead of asking to be held because he’s too small for words. Pretzel sticks close, protective of her boy, and Jay and Chip, albeit a little put off at the sudden shift away from the prophetic hero, take care of him super easy

He got that small because this is the safest he’s felt since before he started training, and he doesn’t consciously remember back then but apparently his body and mind remember !

For months he regresses to just older than a newborn, but eventually, because of his crew caring for him, he starts regressing a little bit older every time. Anywhere from newborn to about eight years old

He’s very clingy. Loves being held because there’s a real weight to it, like there’s effort required to pick him up in the oversea and his friends rise to the challenge every time he asks, Chip squaring his stance and hoisting him up, usually in his arms or on his back but they’ve managed shoulders a couple of times, (Oli cheers every time they manage it). Jay isn’t as strong as Chip but she picks him up too, in a bridal carry or balanced on her hip and she kisses his forehead and calls him little guppy and he beams brighter than the sun

Pretzel dances for him, twists and spins around and splashes him from his barrel, and he laughs. They’ve been banned from going into the ocean when he’s small unless he’s tethered to the boat in some way

Pretzel also just tends to hang around outside her bowl more, perched on his head or with a tentacle looped around his hand. She chirps and sings lullabies and stuff :3

Lover of soft things and blankets. He drenches them by accident because he’s very wet but he loooves soft stuff. So many textured things in the undersea are either rocks, living creatures, or slimy, so having so many soft and non-slimy smooth things is fun for him :3 stims by running his hands over stuff.

Loves brushing Jay and Chip’s hair because of the textures. Jay taught him how to braid it, and sometimes Chip falls asleep when Gill pets him

I think he only regresses when everyone is safe and okay and nothing is going on, they’re between islands and encounters at sea and he feels so safe and gets to be baby for a while. I think when stressful, scary things are happening he buffs himself up and throws himself headfirst into battle and making sure the people around him are safe. It’s not. Relaxing? What would you call that? Vent regressing but as a caregiver. Stress Caregiving? Vent Caregiving ? I think he’d do that instead of vent regressing idk. He’s the one making sure everyone is safe in stressful situations

(There are times when he does vent regress but they’re few and far between. He gets loud and cries a lot- it’s a very public show of needing comfort because when he’s around these guys it’s okay to need comfort)

Jay!

Has age ranges all over. She could be barely older than a toddler at the start of a sentence and as old as fifteen by the end of it. Never has a solid grasp on what ages she’s feeling like, everyone just plays it by ear because asking her for her age results in a blank look or a shrug

She doesn’t play regress very often but when she does she’s mischievous and silly, plays harmless pranks, adds silly things to her inventions or decorates them with paint or stickers

The boys throw her around at her request, they’ll toss her up and down and all over and she LOVES it, loves getting tossed from arm to arm or into hammocks or slung around in a blanket. They no longer throw her off the side of the boat on account of them doing it once by accident and her almost shooting them for it,

Gillion calls her “guppy” at first (because he learns by echoing, and that’s what she calls him) but eventually he starts calling her “little bird” and “birdie” - Chip calls her Jay-Jay. He picked it up from her mom that one time and kept calling her that. He thought it might be annoying but it’s actually really comforting for her

She vent regresses more than play regresses. When she’s vent regressed she’s quieter. Softer edges, easier to hurt by accident. Does as she’s told swiftly without having to ask her twice, whispers “yes sir” and makes a point of saying please and thank you, even when it isn’t necessary at all

Uncle Dray can be hard to talk to when she’s vent regressed so he makes himself scarce and comes to comfort when she’s big again

Chip and Gill are softer with her, remind her that she’s okay, she’s safe, try to give her space but they’re always nearby just in case

She cries. A lot. Usually silent, but if they can assure her she’s safe then she’ll let herself be loud.

Not necessarily agere but I think she’d stim by unloading and reloading her gun. Idk where that one post is but that’s her

Chip:

Regresses to however old he was on the Midnight Rose, and has accidentally called several crewmates “Arlin” (arlan?) because baby brain

As soon as he does he ages back up and freaks out and apologizes a million times, but they just ruffle his hair and call him a cute kid and he goes red and bats their hand away

Loses his words when he’s small, talking usually makes him big again. Took him a long time to learn that not talking is okay, and he’s slowly teaching the others bits of sign language so they can still talk

Wets the bed fairly frequently, used to try to hide it and make excuses but now he just kinda takes care of it. The crew used to tease him a lot for it, but after he had a breakdown about it they don’t anymore and he appreciates it

this guy is already so childish idk if there’s really a solid line between big chip and little chip?? there’s absolutely signs that he’s definitely not an adult anymore, but for the most part the lines are extremely blurry. he could be regressed or he’s just being silly, it’s hard to tell

One sign is the losing words thing, but he also gets generally more embarrassed and blushes easier- and he asks to be held, but questioning why he wants to be held will make him big and embarrassed again

They usually just call him Chip or Chibo (as they often do in canon) but sometimes they’ll tease and call him “Little/Big Chipper”

has been brewing in my head for a little while, but i'm imagining race swapped riptide au where jay and chip are tritons and gillion's a human

gillion is a human and i'm not fully settled on what he looks like but i imagine he's got quite thick and curly dark hair. and freckles. he must have freckles. and maybe pretzel's a bird and apple is instead the frogtopus. so gill would be from the navy of this universe, a sort of apprentice who's shadowing the admirals or something. he's still the chosen one, but has more emphasis on aster this time. the navy have taken him in (forcibly) to try and create an unstoppable warrior. but in a peace meeting with the undersea (he isn't really supposed to be there) gillion attacks one of the leaders - the son of the elder - and gets himself banished from navy soil. somehow he ends up sinking into the sea (don't ask me how, this is a half-baked au) and gets 'picked up' by the big chipper, with chip and jay

picked up is in quotation marks because can you really be picked up by a shipwreck?

chip is a triton, sorta light turquoise skin with seaweed green hair, he's not really based off a specific type of fish, just a generic triton type design. he used to be part of a shoal known as the black roses, a group of various aquatic humanoids that lived under the protection of the leviathan they knew as captain rose (in this au we're following griff @/apple-the-bluebird's idea that leviathans can transform into humanoids, cause it makes it easier for me). until, however, a tragedy struck in the eastern sea and, well no one really knows what happened but the black roses and captain rose haven't been seen since. he swam with reuben price (whose design i think should be like an eel triton) until that went south and he decided to settle in an abandoned shipwreck that he dubbed the big chipper

jay is a triton/water genasi mix, with her mother being a triton and her father being a genasi, so she ends up with dark blue skin and more elven ears, her hair's suuuper long and it's white but seems to glow almost orange in dim light. she's also very tall. big fish lady. she's the granddaughter of the one and only elder, so has a lot of pressure on her, but after her sister's death she chooses to work in her mother's undersea equivalent of a tavern (not much changes here). chip, swimming out every so often from his shipwreck to gather supplies, bumps into her and convinces her to hide out with him and she for whatever reason agrees (suspects someone under the wing of an old leviathan may have killed her sister)

and then they find this just regular looking human guy who clearly needs help and they get him a way to breathe underwater and he decides to just stay with them

extra notes that i'm just adding on the end:

shipwreck blows up because chip doesn't tell gill about the gunpowder he found below deck, or that the silly creatures he's playing with are sea lemurs that very much breathe fire. this causes them to keep travelling. the albatross is just what they call every shipwreck they stay in

the navy and the elders are completely switched, so it's the ferins that run the undersea (with grandma faye as the one and only elder) and the elders are known as the admirals

gill is very much still oblivious, just it's to undersea culture this time

the islands are different reefs/areas they travel through

shoals are like the equivalent of pirate crews. the elder and the ferins very much disapprove of them because they travel around generally causing trouble

caspian, edyn and finn are also land dwellers in this (everyone is completely race swapped, so any land humanoids are aquatic and vice versa). i imagine caspian's an elf though rather than a human

niklaus is a leviathan - this is important to me

hurricanes coming on my brithday so time to dfo a chip ramble! (spoilers)

before we go in, yes itll be a multi ramble because i can since its my birthday tmrrr!! (im giving you guys a gift cause yes)

ok so i cannot stop thinking about how a lot of the time chip in mana was called "racist" it was like, something he wouldnt have known. the "are your horns real?" weird question, sure, but it doesnt really sound like it (THIS IS NOT ME TRYING TO UNDERMINE IT! if its racist, it doesnt matter how it sounds, it is racist.) would be that offensive. the special accent done when he was being "drip"? immediately shamed and not even told what he did wrong. as i noted, no, racism is racism, but it just seems like whenever chip fucks up, its called out upon and is never explained why its so terrible. and thats really what bothers me on it, because both times, its races that chip has never really hung out with (a tiefling [niklaus]) (chip was disguised as a triton yet used i guess a voice similar to a grung??? its confusing, and before you say "but chip knows felipe who was a grung!!" yes, thats why the 'never really' was added, because while he knew felipe he probs didnt know his culture and shit) and wouldnt have known what was considered offensive. and yes, they have every right to be mad, but if i said something fucked up, i would have a right to be explained why it was wrong. i dont know, maybe somewhere in me now chip probably while more cautious with his words, has some anxiety on what he says will be offensive and he'll get yelled at for it and shit (maybe self projection tjhough you can never tell).

while ive seen reasonable ideas of ollie and chip being like brothers, it means a lot to me that like, chip, who didnt really have a parental figure before and the closest he had was arlin, still tries to be a good dad to ollie. like, he knows ollie has an actual dad and mom who probably are worried sick about him, but hes out here with him. and the guilt must sting, but when that kid tries to get into some crazy plan of his crew mates and he sees that smile, he sees why theyd want this kid back. its like "i have barely a clue how to be a parent, let alone a good one, but i will try my best to be one for you here until we get you back home." and ollie sees it too, and i feel like ollie loves his sea dad (who he knows is super cool). i just, them

ya know how i used the "i arely know how to be a parent" thing? i kinda thought on it, and thats basically chip. "i barely know how to do this/be this, but ill try my best to do it right, for them". he wants to be a good pirate for arlin. he wants to be a good captain for his crew. (as i mentioned) he wants to be a good dad for ollie. he wants to be a good person and friend for jay and gill. he wants to fight this war for gillion and lizzie. and he wants to be the best chip he can, not just for his friends sake, but his own. he does it all with a purpose and while he has barely a clue how to, hes going to fucking try and with willpower and destijny, hell fucking do it.

a joke chip fact mentioned in ep 90 for chip was that hes lactose intolerant but he still drinks milk and i cannot like stop thinking about it. cause like, it makes sense. its not his craziest. when getting chased by a dangerous creature, he immediately becomes its "ideal mate" and gives himself "birthing hips" as like his first reaction. he became an old lady and tried to get his pinkie chopped off by the fucking child one time (it instead was done by gill...who used his big fucking sword. yeeouch). i just think about it cause chips insanity is only brought up when it comes to his plans. but, like, where is the crazy chip when his plan fails and he has to bullshit it?! wheres the talk for fucking "hot mode"?! where are the girlies that find it so silly and funny when a bad guy threatens chip and he just comes back like a fucking toddler?! chip is so silly and its just only discussed when chip has a stupid plan (DO NOT GET ME ON ABOUT "if you have another dream me and chip will kill the sun" which while said by gill, chip has no problem with it. like hes not questioning it) which is very sad imo

another thing btw about how chips "horrid plans" are always, like referred to be bad and fail, but he has had working plans and good (even if insane) plans! sure, hes very cringe fail, and he has had bad plans, but its not every plan that fails. his plan with cedric? worked pretty well. using the ball bearings to make that robot trip? gillion just failed his fucking blessing and got a nat 1. the old lady jay disguise? the navy general disguise? granted, some of the best working plans were disguise related, but even the risky one with the fucking suitcase and ollie had worked! so honestly, i was surprised (and still dont believe) when chip had to share a secret about himself and said hes never had a plan. because honestly? the fucking bullshit he thinks up has no right to be insanely well done improv. like, jay doesnt have to be "the one smart person on board" because theyve all had moments of smartness and yet only jay is shown it

anyways im losing ideas maybe ill ask the fnc guy for characters to ramble on lmao
