ACC tournament 2020: Bracket, schedule, preview, and scores

Action kicks off Tuesday in Greensboro!

The ACC tournament is making its triumphant return to the Greensboro for the first time since 2015 after the event traveled to D.C., Brooklyn, and Charlotte.

The No. 4 ranked Florida State Seminoles enter the tournament as the outright regular-season winner and No. 1 seed. Leonard Hamilton — the ACC Coach of the Year — and his squad have just five losses on the season. Trent Forrest, Devin Vassell, and MJ Walker headline a balanced squad for the Seminoles that will make every aspect of the game difficult for opponents.

The No. 2-seeded Virginia Cavaliers finished in a three-way tie for second with Louisville and Duke, and are entering the postseason as one of the hottest teams in the country, let alone conference. Virginia won its last eight games, and have won 11 of the last 12 games with victories over Florida State, Duke, and Louisville in that span. The Hoos have the nation’s best defense (per KenPom) and one of the worst offenses, but they’re still finding ways to grind out wins. They may be without the trio of De’Andre Hunter, Ty Jerome, and Kyle Guy, but second year guard Kihei Clark has come on late and Mamadi Diakite refuses to be denied.

Duke, the No. 4 seed, is the odds-on favorite to win, but finished the season 2-2 heading into the tournament. Coach Mike Krzyzewski has been tinkering with his lineups, reducing playing time for Matthew Hurt, Alex O’Connell, and Joey Baker down the stretch. The Blue Devis rely heavily on ACC Player/Defensive Player of the Year Tre Jones and Rookie of the Year Vernon Carey, Jr., and can struggle if a third scoring option doesn’t emerge.

The No. 3-seeded Louisville Cardinals have been inconsistent this season, looking like a title contender and extremely beatable at different times. Malik Williams made a brief return from injury in the Cards’ regular-season finale (a loss to Virginia), but his performance is going to be huge for Chris Mack and Louisville in the postseason. Louisville will have to face either Syracuse or North Carolina/Virginia Tech, none of which would be a cake walk. Jordan Nwora is the type of player that can take over a game, and Louisville’s supporting cast (Steven Enoch, Dwayne Sutton, and Ryan McMahon to name a few) is capable of beating anyone.

All season, the ACC has been a bit of a free-for-all. The top tier — Florida State, Duke, Louisville, and Virginia — pulled away from the rest of the league, but this season more than any other in recent memory has been hotly contested. Keep an eye on the middle grouping of NC State, Notre Dame, and Syracuse as trio that could make some noise. It’s a shame Georgia Tech is ineligible for postseason play, because the Yellow Jackets were actually ... good? Oh, and North Carolina? Yeah, they may have finished last, but it would be the most 2019-20 basketball thing ever for them to put together a run.

The stakes

Right now, the ACC is only looking at getting four teams into the tournament: Florida State, Duke, Louisville, and Virginia. The Cavaliers worked their way off the bubble with an eight game winning streak to end the regular season, and you should see the reigning champs at or about the seven seed line.

NC State still has some work to do, and the Wolf Pack should also probably be hoping no bid stealers pop onto the scene. NCSU will face the winner of No. 12 Wake Forest and No. 13 Pittsburgh, so if they want to keep their NCAA tournament hopes alive, they have to at least win one, and should probably pick up another win over Duke in the Quarterfinals for good measure.

North Carolina has undoubtedly been playing much better, but they’re dead last in the conference this season and will have to win five games in five days to earn the conference’s automatic qualifier for the Big Dance.

The format

The top 10 teams receive first-round byes and the top four teams receive double-byes to the quarterfinals. Teams are seeded by record within the conference, with a tiebreaker system to seed teams with identical conference records. Georgia Tech is ineligible for post season play because of NCAA violations and won’t participate.

Florida State won the regular-season title outright and earned the No. 1 seed with an 80-62 win over Boston College on Saturday, the program’s first time doing so since joining the conference. After winning 11 of their past 12 games, the defending national champion Virginia Cavaliers are the No. 2 seed, jumping No. 3 Louisville and No. 4 Duke in the process.

Georgia Tech will be absent from the tournament due to a postseason ban they received earlier this season. The NCAA gave the Yellow Jackets four years probation due to impermissible benefits violations involving former assistant coach Darryl LaBarrie. Georgia Tech appealed the ban, but withdrew the appeal last week. The program will be eligible for postseason play following the 2020-2021 season.

The ACC is proceeding with its tournament despite fears around the coronavirus.

“We’re in touch with county health officials, and the ACC is as well,” Andrew Brown, the Coliseum public relations director, told Greensboro.com. “Everything is on schedule as of now.”

Personally congratulating Georgia Tech on its milestone move to Adidas

The Yellow Jackets have taken a huge step, and I’m legitimately excited for them.

To whom it may concern,

I hope this letter finds you well, and I am sure it does because today’s the day for you. This is an important milestone in your program’s history. After all these years, you have broken your chains and you’re officially headed to Adidas. But most importantly, you’re leaving Russell Athletic.

No matter what uniforms you unveil, the key is the three stripe logo in the corner that represents a new partnership and a new day for the program. It’s a total overhaul, and even the mascot’s getting some shoes. It has been a long road, but it ends here. Perhaps this is more aptly referred to as a new beginning.

Your fans’ hatred of the Russell rags is well documented and well founded.

It’s not your fault that Russell became your cross to bear. You cannot be held liable for the sins of former athletic administrators.

Before any player on the team was even born, a deal was struck that made sense at the time. Russell might not have been at the top of the athletic apparel world, but they certainly weren’t in the cellar. Russell was the official apparel supplier for schools like Auburn, Washington State, and Alabama. It also had an exclusive agreement to be the uniform supplier of MLB from 1992-1999.

But the years have not been kind to Russell’s uniform business, and they’ve officially discontinued it with you as the lone major college program still in cahoots.

In 2012, the end seemed near. It, in fact, wasn’t.

The original contract was for 10 years, beginning in July of 2008. Then-AD Dan Radakovich had the option to cancel the final 5 years of the partnership prior to August 1, 2012. He elected not to do so. He left to be Clemson’s AD less than 3 months later.

For five more years you suffered as Nike, Adidas and Under Armour continued to take over the apparel game. Russell — and by extension, y’all — were left out in the cold as swag became weaponized throughout the sport. Every week your team brought a knife to a textile gun fight.

And that’s affected the program in the minds of the sport’s natural resource: recruits.

What was harming the program in the minds of of many became quantified with one survey by Pick Six Previews. They polled 100 uncommitted sophomore and junior high school football players, a third of whom agreed that a school’s uniform would have an impact on their college decision. Seventy two of them agreed that uniforms have “a great impact on [their] perception of a team.”

It is no surprise where Russell, and Georgia Tech ranked.

The recruits were asked to rate the four major providing brands on how “cool” they were. The averages were: Nike (9.5), Adidas (8.1), Under Armour (7.9), and Russell Athletic (2.9).

Georgia Tech came in #4 on the “worst uniforms” prompt, behind Alabama, Penn State, and Maryland (which was also tied for fourth on ‘best uniforms’).

In a game where perception is reality, Georgia Tech’s was not a favorable one. And your on-field product hasn’t been able to make up for the way you looked.

A trip down memory lane shows how, since that 2008 deal was signed, Russell and Georgia Tech have failed to keep up with the boom in uniform innovation touched off by Oregon.

Some aren’t bad, and the honeycomb helmets are a notable brightspot ...

... but more often than not you rolled out uniforms that were too busy with way too much piping. And there’s also a broader lack of innovation in the set from year-to-year, and little to no rollout or hype.

Where other schools have parties to announce their uniforms, Georgia Tech players showed up to a mid-August fan day in 2016 wearing the same set from the year before.

But even schools that make subtle changes to their uniforms make a big deal out of it.

Now you get to do the same, promising a series of events throughout the academic year to unveil new sets across all sports. You’ve finally got something worth unveiling in a special way.

Adidas used to be widely panned for their uniforms.

First of all, the on-field product is improving for Adidas and gaining on Nike and Under Armour.

You’ve chosen the three stripe life at a pivotal point in their own battle for sartorial supremacy. There have been some infamous sets rolled out in recent years. But Adidas did get on the short list for best alternate uniform last season.

Beyond that, Adidas has been doing well on the business front. They’re appealing to The Youths by leaning into their strength as a lifestyle brand, where Nike and Under Armour have struggled to divorce from their roots as performance brands.

“The overall ‘sneaker’ market is not great,” [Mark Sullivan, a sportswear expert] said. “Teenage boys, the main shoe buying customers for the past 40 years, are now focused more on technology and not shoes and clothing. As a result, the sales of premium basketball shoes are down.”

And after speaking to an administrator at a school that recently switched from Nike, I’ve gathered that schools get more attention and have a better working relationship with Adidas because it has a smaller stable of teams than Nike.

I close this letter simply by giving my sincerest plaudits.

Perhaps an elegant written salutation isn’t needed. The proof is visual in nature. You are out with the old and in with the new, and I couldn’t be happier for you.
