"PERFECT FOR THE BOHEMIAN INSPIRED LIVING ROOM, BEDROOM, OR DEN."
PIC INFO: Spotlight on a vintage Gabbeh rug, "Gabbeh Rug No. 1," by Forsyth Art, Saint Louis. Dimensions 60x82 inches.
OVERVIEW: "We collected this beautiful vintage gabbeh rug for its cozy, cool feel. Perfect for the bohemian inspired living room, bedroom, or den. A gabbeh rug is traditionally a sleeping rug. The pile is thick and cozy and hand-spun and woven of 100% sheep's wool. These rugs are popular among the populations of the Zagros Mountains of Iran, including Kurdish, Luri, and Qashqai people. The gabbeh is usually woven by women. The word “gabbeh” comes from the Persian گبه, meaning raw, natural, uncut."

Cos Ahmet
Dismantling of the Body
A Guest speaker from this module that grabbed my attention was Cos Ahmet, as his work is unconventional and esoteric in my opinion his performance art works, perfectly captures what people either adore or despite contemporary art for. Ahmet graduated from John Moore's with a master's in fine art and now has a studio at the Royal Standard, where the artist collaborates with other artists in residency, continually with Garry Finigan. Focusing on his solo work, Ahmet explores materials in all forms from textile work to more metaphorical pieces blurring the boundaries between material and body. In bodies of work such as from the bones to the skin Cos uses the idea of fractures and repairs in pipes as representations of the body- using domestic objects to paraphrase the body as pipe joints are labelled elbow joints the link is evident. It delves into concepts of dismembered and separated parts and the use of domestic and industrial elements. This was inspired by the work of Hans Bellmer who focused on mutilation of dolls and the dismantling of the body throughout the majority of his work, the surrealist portrayals of dolls/ women are unsettling and incomplete.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What is it to be a body now?
Ahmet references Keira O’Riley, an Irish post-war artist employing visual, performance and feminist art through the 90’s up to the present. O’Riley ‘speculative reconfigurations of The Body in its most expanded sense, across multiple spaces, scales, and temporalities, often but not always, working with site, duration, and context as generative elements’ (http://www.kiraoreilly.com/statement) . The artist focuses on body politics and is now a crucial figure in biological arts and ecology in Helsinki. In response to the question she posed; what is it to be a body now? Ahmet created The Presence of Relics (2020) and To Disperse Is To Cause (2020) which inspired by O’Riley, using clear tape and film to create a phantom impression of itself and the concept of shedding his own skin. The Presence of Relics consists of the body and the box becoming one, as Ahmet shows bodies disappearing, morphing into a type of mass.

Acknowledging the Choreographic Object
The artist is well informed by art history, with the readings of Erin Manning and the works of William Forsythe, Alan Kaprow and Franz Erhad Walther shaping his art. Franz’s performance pieces from the 60’s were conceptual, with participation of people covered/ wearing a fabric, stretching miles between the people. This is referenced in Ahmet’s Sensing the Inbetween (2020) with the same name as Walther’s. Ahmet created the piece in a different material, replacing the fabric with clear film and box’s that performers were shrouded in. Within the context of social differences, Ahmet’s rendition is indicative of Covid as the two are stood socially distanced and in their respective bubbles. The artist also informed a separate piece of Ahmet's collection; as he was prompted to make an object he could disappear into. Cos achieved this through using the material of a survival blanket, in Curious Being (2021) he created a performance piece on Crosby beach during the first lockdown of Covid-19, adding an extra layer to the blanket for structure Ahmet was inside the object in order to ask the question when does the body stop being a body and become material?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mannings ideology of ‘Choreography happens everywhere, all the time’
Ahmet follows artists such as O’Riley by exploring the naked body in performance and video, as seen in the exhibition of Proposition (2022) at gallery Dodo in Brighton. The piece includes a nude man with translucent plastic or film over his face, while holding a clear box over his genitals. The artist intends to depict how a body interacts with unfamiliar objects, disappearing into and becoming a material. I see this as why Ahmet works with transparency, as it adds a juxtaposition of hiding the performer while being completely visible.
Tumblr media
Ahmet continues to divulge in merging material and body through Your Normal Surface Is Not Available where he covers himself in foil to immerse himself into the background of a survival blanket gradually. The video capturing the process of his face being covered increasingly, eventually hiding his eyes, then ends with the model beginning to take the mask off, although the audience does not see his entire face. This is done through performance in a video edited giving his face transparency, adding a factor of fantasy, and almost creating a liminal space within the video, with a soundtrack of eerie music composed by fellow artist Gary. Ahmet hails his inspiration from Bruce Nauman’s Art of Make-Up Series (1967-68).Nauman is an American artist who in this video is stood topless, applying white paint to himself until completely covered, the ritual is repeated with pink, green and black makeup displayed through four screens at once.

Compass Gallery
Compass Gallery, Glasgow's oldest contemporary art gallery established in 1968, has been a pivotal force in supporting emerging artists, both new graduates and established talents.
The gallery showcases a monthly program featuring solo and themed exhibitions, including the renowned 'New Generation Show.' Since its founding in 1969, the gallery has actively scouted fresh talent across Scotland, fostering a lively arts scene. Pioneering initiatives like Christmas Shows and New Generation Shows have become industry standards.
Compass Gallery, originally founded as the New Charing Cross Gallery, evolved under the guidance of Cyril Gerber into a prominent player in the Glasgow art scene. Notable artists, including Peter Howson and Jennifer McRae, debuted as new graduates in annual exhibitions, a groundbreaking concept initiated by Gerber.
The gallery's contributions extend to exhibiting mature artists like David Bellany and Elisabeth Frink, highlighting its enduring influence on Scottish contemporary art. With a friendly atmosphere and an engaged staff, Compass Gallery continues to enrich Glasgow's artistic landscape with its imaginative and diverse exhibition program.
Strange Field
Strange Field, established in 2012, is a dynamic platform fostering creative experimentation, learning, and development, with a strong commitment to underrepresented and early-stage career artists. Situated at both French Street and The Pipe Factory in Glasgow's East End, Strange Field envisions accessible creative platforms embedded in communities, catalysing increased creative development, education, experimentation, and inclusion.
The organisation prioritises supporting underrepresented and early-career artists, emphasising accessibility and resilience within the arts. It actively engages with the local community in Glasgow's East End as a catalyst for creative change and improved quality of life through cultural activities.
Striving for best practices, Strange Field operates with a non-hierarchical governance model known as Policy Governance or Carver Governance, fostering co-operative working and organisational resilience.
The curated programme includes exhibitions, events, residencies, and workshops, focusing on early career and underrepresented artists. Strange Field provides affordable studios for artist production, a unique application writing support service, and is actively working towards an open community art school at The Pipe Factory.
French Street offers affordable, first-come-first-served studios with rates inclusive of bills, ranging from £95 to £200 per month. While the studios are wheelchair accessible, there is currently no accessible WC. Studios provide 24-hour access, Wi-Fi, and open-plan spaces with natural daylight.
Strange Field is expanding its studio provision at 111/113 French Street and developing an alternative arts education program—a community art school—to overcome barriers preventing diverse participation in creative activities.
In summary, Strange Field stands as a vibrant hub supporting artists and communities, embodying inclusivity, creative exploration, and a commitment to fostering emerging talent.
The Pipe Factory
Friends of The Pipe Factory, driven by a Regeneration Capital Grant Fund award of £1,965,354, is set to transform Glasgow's B-listed Pipe Factory into a vibrant community and creative hub. Originally a clay smoking pipe factory from 1877 to 1955, the building's renovation project aims to revitalise it as a facility for creative activity and community well-being. The grant will facilitate internal remodelling, installation of new facilities, energy-efficient systems, and various upgrades, honouring the building's historical significance.
The Pipe Factory, built in 1876-79, designed by architect Matthew Forsyth, once employed over 500 people producing up to 14,000 clay pipes a day. Closed in 1955, the building's current project seeks to refire it as a creative and community space.
Between 2012 and 2018, The Pipe Factory Ltd ran a successful program with residencies, exhibitions, and events. In 2016, emergency repairs were undertaken, including replacing windows and a new slate roof, supported by Glasgow City Council and the Architectural Heritage Fund.
The Pipe Factory Ltd, now trading as Strange Field, played a pivotal role in creating a cultural resource in Glasgow's East End. Friends of The Pipe Factory CIC, formed in 2020, aims to continue this legacy by purchasing and redeveloping the iconic building into a creative social enterprise.
The grant will fund internal remodelling, installation of a new lift and secondary staircase, building fabric repairs, energy-efficient systems, and replacements of windows and doors, making the building accessible and sustainable.
Friends of The Pipe Factory CIC outlines six main outcomes, including increased community engagement, improvements in physical and mental well-being through arts programs, new learning opportunities, pathways to employability, support for creative industries, and the preservation of heritage.
In March 2021, Friends of The Pipe Factory purchased the building as a community asset, fuelling their ambition to create a permanent home fostering creativity and individual learning, with young people and communities at its heart.
Barras 100, a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of The Barras market, is the first creative project by Friends of The Pipe Factory, showcasing the building's commitment to community engagement and cultural celebration.
This ambitious project, driven by a passionate group of organisations, aims to breathe new life into The Pipe Factory, offering a space for collaboration, learning, and creative experimentation that will benefit both individuals and the wider community.
Transmission
Transmission, established in 1983, stands as a pivotal artist-run organisation in Glasgow, embodying a commitment to autonomy while being intricately connected to its membership and communities. Operating as the longest-standing artist-run space in Glasgow, Transmission engages in diverse activities, including exhibitions, events, exchanges, residencies, and publications. It serves as a social hub, fostering a present-day community while housing an archive of materials tied to its gallery's history and membership.
Transmission collaborates with artists across various initiatives, providing a platform for the production of exhibitions, events, and publications. It also facilitates exchanges, residencies, and shares resources with its membership to support activities beyond its programming.
While labouring under the banner of autonomy, Transmission acknowledges its deep interdependence on factors and players influencing its operational parameters. As a registered charity, it sustains itself through a combination of state funding, voluntary labor, and the ongoing construction of its community.
Engrained in its constitution is the commitment to keeping all Transmission activities and resources free, ensuring fair pay for everyone involved, including artists and creative practitioners. This commitment coexists with the voluntary nature of the committee managing and programming Transmission.
Beyond being an exhibition space, Transmission serves as a vibrant social hub, fostering a dynamic community of artists, creatives, and supporters. Its activities aim to bridge the gap between autonomy and the collaborative efforts that sustain its existence.
As a registered charity, Transmission embodies its commitment to fair pay and free access through a unique organisational structure managed by a voluntary committee. The committee, consisting of six individuals, operates under the ethos of Transmission, with successive two-year terms.
Transmission, with its rich history and ongoing commitment to artistic freedom, fair pay, and community engagement, remains a cornerstone in Glasgow's artist-run landscape, showcasing the intricate balance between autonomy and collaborative efforts in sustaining a vibrant creative space.
Glasgow Project Room
Established in 1997, the Glasgow Project Room originated as a space for studio members to showcase their work. Located on the first floor of the Trongate 103 centre, it has evolved into a dynamic project space that supports both the studios and a broader audience, hosting exhibitions and events by artists locally and globally. The Project Room operates without direct funding, requiring artists to fund and manage their own shows.
The studio offers an open-plan system fostering support and dialogue among a diverse community of artists working in various media. Artists in the studios have gone on to further education and international exchanges. To apply for studio space, artists can contact the committee by email or telephone, and successful applicants must demonstrate a commitment to being a visual artist and the artistic use of the studio.
Artists and curators are invited to submit proposals to Glasgow Project Room by sending six examples of their work, a CV, and an outline of their intentions for the space to [email protected]. The committee reviews proposals every three months, and responses may take this duration.

Finally building the Forsythe family gallery/museum/studio :o I want a place separate from their house for showing off their art and collections, as well as a big photo studio, and maybe as a place for social events too.
I got the bills down by half (without cheats!!) by buying the Frugal reward trait for like 3 of the adults in the household LOL. So they were still 12k simoleons last week... but that’s down from 26k SO UH. Not looking forward to see what they’ll be this week (since I bought the business, that pool alone is worth like 20k) but the twins will be adults soon and hopefully I can get them to have enough reward points to get the Frugal traits too...

THE DARK CORNER
November 10, 1947
Tumblr media
Synopsis ~ A former San Francisco private eye, just in back New York after two years in prison (the victim of a frame-up), finds himself a target for another send-up and murder.
Tumblr media
Directed by Fred MacKaye with musical direction by Louis Silvers and sound effects by Charlie Forsyth
Tumblr media
Adapted for radio by Sanford Barnett from the screenplay by Jay Dratler and Bernard Schoenfeld based on the book by Leo Rosten.
Tumblr media
It was based on the 20th Century Fox motion picture of the same name released on May 8, 1946.
Tumblr media
In later years, Lucille Ball was vocal about hating the experience of shooting The Dark Corner. Director Henry Hathaway's bullying reduced Ball to stuttering on set, at which point Hathaway accused her of being inebriated. At the time, Lucille Ball was suing to get out of her contract with MGM. As a result, MGM loaned her to Fox for this picture, which included a significant pay cut.
Tumblr media
Lux Radio Theatre (1935-55) was a radio anthology series that adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films (”Lux Presents Hollywood”). These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences in Los Angeles. The series became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. The primary sponsor of the show was Unilever through its Lux Soap brand.
CAST
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (Kathleen Stewart) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. “My Favorite Husband” eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon.
Tumblr media
Mark Stevens (Bradford Galt) reprises his role from the film version of The Dark Corner (1946). He became a contract player for Warners at $100 a week in 1943 but they darkened and straightened his curly ginger-colored hair and covered his freckles. At first he was billed as Stephen Richards, he later changed it to Mark Stevens at the suggestion of Darryl F. Zanuck when he switched to 20th Century-Fox. He died in 1994 at age 77.
Tumblr media
Joseph Kearns (Ralph Wickett) appeared on “I Love Lucy” as the psychiatrist in “The Kleptomaniac” (ILL S1;E27) and later played the theatre manager in “Lucy’s Night in Town” (S6;E22). His most famous role was as Mr. Wilson on TV’s “Dennis the Menace” (1959). When he passed away during the show’s final season, Lucy regular Gale Gordon took over for him, playing his brother.
In the film, the character was named Hardy Cathcart and was played by Clifton Webb.
Norma Jean Nilsson (Little Girl at the Boarding House) was a child actress who left Hollywood at age 19 after appearing in 16 films and television shows.
In the film, the character carries a slide whistle, which is not used here. She was played by Colleen Alpaugh.
Wally Maher (Fred Foss aka Stauffer) was born on August 4, 1908 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was known for Mystery Street (1950), The Reformer and the Redhead (1950) and Hollywood Hotel (1937). He was married to Molly Bruno. He died on December 27, 1951.
In the feature film, the role was played by William Bendix, who would go on to fame as the title character in TV’s “The Life of Riley.”
Dan O'Herlihy (Anthony Jardine) was an Irish-born actor nominated for an Oscar in 1954 for Robinson Crusoe. In 1960 he made an appearance on Desilu’s “The Untouchables.” He was in two of the RoboCop movies. He died in 2005 at age 85.
In the feature film, the role was played by German-born actor Kurt Krueger.
Fay Baker (Mari Wickett) was born on January 31, 1917 in New York City as Fanita Baker Schwager. She was known for Notorious (1946), The House on Telegraph Hill (1951) and Deadline - U.S.A. (1952). She died on December 8, 1987.
In the feature film, the role was taken by Cathy Downs, making her first credited screen appearance.
ENSEMBLE
Trude Marson was seen in uncredited roles in four films from 1937 to 1947.
Noreen Gammill started her screen career as the voice of Catty the Elephant in Disney’s Dumbo (1941). She made two background appearances on “The Andy Griffith Show” (1963 and 1964), filmed on the Desilu backlot.
William Johnstone is probably best remembered as Judge Lowell on the long-running daytime drama “As The World Turns”.  Prior to that he worked extensively in radio and took over the role of Lamont Cranston on "The Shadow" playing opposite Agnes Moorehead when Orson Welles left the series.
Janet Scott was a regular background voice on “Lux Radio Theatre” with dozens of episodes to her credit from 1937 to 1955.
Lois Corbett  was married to Don Wilson of “The Jack Benny Program” and as such did more than a dozen episodes of the television shows with him from 1954 to 1964.
Edward Marr was seen in The Affairs of Annabel with Lucille Ball in 1938.  He was also in two Bob Hope TV specials with Hope and Ball in 1966 and 1970.
Stanley Farrar was seen on “I Love Lucy” in “Home Movies” (ILL S3;E20) and “Staten Island Ferry” (ILL S5;E12). He on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy and Arthur Godfrey” (TLS S3;E23) and “Lucy Meets Danny Kaye” (TLS S3;E15).
Herb Butterfield was born on October 28, 1895 in Providence, Rhode Island. He was known for The Halls of Ivy (1954), The House on Telegraph Hill (1951) and Shield for Murder (1954). On radio, he portrayed the Commissioner on NBC 's "Dangerous Assignment" (1949-53) and Clarence Wellman on "The Halls of Ivy" (1950-52). He died on May 2, 1957
Cliff Clark was seen with Lucille Ball in Her Husband’s Affairs (1947), Miss Grant Takes Richmond (1949), and The Fuller Brush Girl (1950).
OTHERS
Tumblr media
William Keighley (Host and Producer) was the director of nearly 40 feature films between 1932 and 1953. His film The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) was selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being culturally significant.
Dorothy Lovett (Commercial Spokeswoman as Libby Collins, Hollywood Reporter) appeared as Meta Bauer on radio’s “The Guiding Light" (1945-47) and as Toni Sherwood in "The Adventures of Rocky Jordan".  She did three films with Lucille Ball from 1939 to 1941.
Betty Ann Lynn (Herself, Act Two Intermission Guest) is best known for playing Thelma Lou on “The Andy Griffith Show” (1961 to 1965) which was filmed on the Desilu back lot.
John Milton Kennedy (Announcer) was the announcer of all 35 episodes of “The Loretta Young Show” from 1954 to 1955.
ACT ONE
Tumblr media
William Keighley introduces the program, noting that many years earlier, director Fred Kohlmar saw a titian-haired young model who had great possibilities - Lucille Ball.  He later had the privilege of presenting her in the film version of The Dark Corner. After a mention of Lux Toilet Soap, the program begins.
Tumblr media
The action opens in a New York City office building on a sultry summer afternoon. Police detective Reeves visits the Offices of Bradford Galt, Private Investigator and speaks to his secretary, Kathleen Stewart.
Galt enters and Reeves wonders why Galt didn’t notify him that he moved offices after his prior unpleasantness.  Galt asks Kathleen to have dinner with him. After dinner, Galt asks her to go dancing but she’s wise to his advance. As they walk down the street, they realize that they are being followed.
Tumblr media
Kathleen takes a cab back to the office, while Galt confronts the pursuer at gunpoint, taking him back to his office for questioning. He says his name is Fred Foss, and that he’s also a private detective. Galt doesn’t believe him and decides to beat the truth out of him.
Tumblr media
After some roughing up, Fred discloses that he is being paid to tail Galt by Anthony Jardine. In the tussle, some ink spills on Foss’s white suit. He lets Foss leave. Kathleen was supposed to tail Foss after he left the office, but he tricked her and got away.
Back at his rooming house, Foss uses the hall telephone to call art gallery owner Ralph Wickett, and his ink-stained suit is noticed by a Little Girl neighbor.
At a party for his third wedding anniversary, Wickett hangs up and is greeted by Jardine, a lawyer. Mrs. Lucy Wilding takes Jardine aside pretending to ask legal advice, but it is revealed that he is blackmailing her.
Meanwhile, Galt confides in Kathleen about his past. Jardine is trying to kill Galt because he was a former partner that Galt confronted about his blackmailing female clients. Now Jardine wants to finish the job.
Mari Wickett, Ralph’s wife, is having an affair with Anthony Jardine. She wants to run away with him. At the same time, Galt is headed there to settle the score.
End of Act One
Tumblr media
A Lux commercial break takes the form of a story from Libby Collins, Hollywood Reporter. She says she saw Universal’s The Lost Moment starring Robert Cummings and Susan Hayward. Libby says she was on location when they filmed the big fire scene, the biggest fire ever done on a sound stage.  She says that she and Susan Hayward washed the soot off their faces with Lux Toilet Soap!
Tumblr media
At the time of the broadcast, The Lost Moment was still two weeks from being released. It opened in cinemas on November 27, 1947. The story is set in Italy, so the cast included Edward Ciannelli, who played pizzeria owner Mr. Martinelli in “Visitor from Italy” (ILL S6;E5) and Saverio LoMedico who played the Rome hotel bellboy in “Lucy’s Italian Movie” (ILL S5;E23).  The film was not a box office success.
ACT TWO
Tumblr media
An hour has past since the end of Act One and Galt is at Jardine’s door. Galt threatens Jardine, who denies tailing him.The two fight  while Mari is hiding in the other room. After Galt leaves, she convinces him to run away with her.
At the Gallery, Wickett is visited by Foss. It is clear Wickett is setting up Jardine to take the fall when he has Galt killed.  Foss calls Galt to betray Jardine for a price. Galt suggests a one-on-one meeting at his apartment - 904 West 52nd, apartment 307 at 8pm sharp. Wickett will send Jardine to Galt’s apartment at 7:30pm.
Tumblr media
In reality, there is no such address. West 52nd Street in New York City ends at the the 600s block. This is similar to the Ricardo and Mertz apartment building. 623 East 68th Street, which, if real, would be in the East River!
Kathleen and Galt are supposed to meet at the movies, but he doesn’t show so he goes to his apartment at 8:30. Galt opens the door and reveals that Jardine is dead. Galt was ambushed with and knocked out with ether. He woke up to find Jardine’s body bludgeoned by the fireplace poker.  Galt realizes he was set up.
Tumblr media
Later, Galt meets Kathleen at her apartment. He couldn’t find Foss and doesn’t know where to look next.
Wickett reminds Mari that they are due at the Kinsglsey’s that night, but she begs off. He strongly hints that he knows that Mari is stepping out on him and looking to run off.
Galt suddenly realizes that Foss would have to have his white suit cleaned, so he is determined to search all the cleaners for the suit and get his address.
Foss phones Wickett, and the Little Girl is there to overhear his conversation. Foss makes a plan to meet Wickett on the 31st floor of the Grant building.
Galt and Kathleen are about to give up on the search for the suit when a cleaner comes through. They get his address and trace Foss to the rooming house where he lives. His name turns out to be Stauffer, not Foss. The landlady reports that he moved out an hour ago and doesn’t know where he went. But the Little Girl does - and spills the beans for a quarter!  Galt and Kathleen head for the Grant Building.
Tumblr media
End of Act Two
In the break, Keighley interviews Fox contract player Betty Ann Lynn, who saw filming of Daryl F. Zanuck’s Gentleman’s Agreement starring Gregory Peck and Dorothy McGuire in a “very unusual picture”.
Tumblr media
Gentleman’s Agreement premiered on November 11, one day after this broadcast, in both New York City and Chicago. It dealt with anti-Semitism and went on to win three Oscars, including Best Picture. The cast included Lucycom alumni Mike Lally, Shep Houghton, Roy Roberts, and Amzie Strickland in uncredited roles. Betty Ann Lynn says that she also likes to watch the filming of a costume picture like The Foxes of Harrow starring Rex Harrison and Maureen O’Hara, who had 26 costumes made just for her.  She notes that O’Hara has a Lux complexion.
Tumblr media
The Foxes of Harrow was released September 13, 1947. "Lux Radio Theater" broadcast a sixty minute radio adaptation of this movie on December 6, 1948, with Maureen O'Hara reprising her movie role. The movie was the screen debut of William Schallert, who did several episodes of “The Lucy Show.”  O’Hara and Lucille Ball became lifelong friends after their 1940 film Dance, Girl, Dance. Like Gentleman’s Agreement, The Foxes of Harrow also features Roy Roberts, who went on to play bank president Mr. Cheever on “The Lucy Show.”
ACT THREE
Tumblr media
Kathleen and Galt rush to the Grant Building, where Mr. Wickett is about to settle accounts on a remote fire escape. Foss / Stauffer brings proof that Jardine is dead but Wickett throws him from the fire escape to his death.
Galt and Kathleen witness the whole incident from the street, as does the cab driver who was waiting for Foss / Stauffer. Thinking fast, Galt steals the cab which still contains Foss’s luggage. Later, we hear that the bags were only full of clothes. Kathleen urges him to keep thinking.   Kathleen suddenly remembers that the Little Girl mentioned galleries. They put the pieces together and all evidence leads them to the Wickett Galleries. Galt heads there and questions the clerk. Under the guise of buying a painting, Galt inquires about meeting Mr. Wickett, and the clerk departs. Mari comes in the side door, and Galt tells her that Anthony Jardine has been murdered. She faints. Wickett comes in and when Galt tells him the truth, Ralph locks him in the gallery vault. Mari has revived and overhears Ralph’s threats, holding a gun on him. She shoots her husband dead.
Tumblr media
Kathleen has tipped off the police, who only want to charge him with stealing a taxi cab. Kathleen asks if he can be booked at another time because they have a date at the City Hall - to get married.
End of Story
As a curtain call, Keighley chats with Lucille Ball and Mark Stevens. He congratulates Ball on the success of her stage show, Dream Girl, a play she says she will do again in San Francisco. When Keighley asks how Lucille’s busy schedule and that of her husband Desi Arnaz’s leave any time for a personal life, Ball says that they will be playing in San Francisco at the same time.
Tumblr media
In June 1947, Lucille Ball performed at New Jersey’s McCarter Theatre in Dream Girl, a play by Elmer Rice. It also played Brooklyn, Detroit and Boston.

The San Francisco production opened just a week after this radio telecast. As Ball states, Desi Arnaz was also in San Francisco at the time, playing in the Rose Room of the Palace Hotel, a fact that was advertised in the Dream Girl program. During the Los Angeles engagement in January 1948, Ball fell ill and had to withdraw. Although she love performing on stage, her radio career and then television success did not allow her to return to the footlights until 1960.

Lucy notes that like many other busy stars, she owes her good complexion to Lux Soap!
Turning to Mark Stevens, Lucille notes that he will play an FBI man in his next project at Fox, with Keighley as director.

Although the film’s title is not mentioned, they are referring to The Street With No Name, which won’t be released until June 1948. Stevens plays Gene Cordell aka George Manley, a covert FBI agent who infiltrates a ruthless gangster mob. "Lux Radio Theater" broadcast a 60-minute radio adaptation of the movie on January 31, 1949 with Mark Stevens reprising his film role.
Keighley notes that next week “Lux Radio Theatre” will present Jane Wyman and Ronald Reagan in Nobody Lives Forever.
Tumblr media
The Warner Brothers picture Nobody Lives Forever was released on November 1, 1946. It originally starred John Garfield and Geraldine Fitzgerald in roles taken on radio by Reagan and Wyman, who were husband and wife at the time. Of course, Reagan left Hollywood for a grander stage, first in California as Governor, then as President of the United States. He bestowed Lucille Ball with The Kennedy Center Honor in 1986.

These were used to make supplies for wartime, such as ammunition and weapons.
Announcer Kennedy notes that Mark Stevens appeared through the courtesy of 20th Century Fox, producers of Forever Amber.
Tumblr media
Forever Amber is a 1944 romance novel by Kathleen Winsor set in 17th-century England. It was made into a film in 1947 starring Cornel Wilde, who appeared in “The Star Upstairs” (ILL S4;E25). When “Lucy Writes A Novel” (ILL S3;E24), Ethel jokes about finding Lucy’s hidden manuscript and burning it:  “We pulled down the kitchen blind and changed the name of your novel to 'Forever Ember.'”
‘DARK’ TRIVIA
Tumblr media
In a September 1985 episode of “Remington Steele,” a character played by Stephen Dillane has the name Bradford Galt!  The stories, however, are not otherwise connected.
In both the film and the radio show, Fred Foss gives his phone number as CH-elsea 4-43510. However, according to the Manhattan phone book for 1946, there were only CH-elsea 2 and CH-elsea 3 exchanges. Real phone numbers were rarely used in film or television.
Tumblr media
When television began to supplant radio, “The Lux Video Theatre” was introduced. It was seen from 1950 to 1959. Initially, the show was a thirty-minute weekly show featuring live stage plays, but when it moved to NBC in August 1954, the show was extended to sixty minutes. As on radio, the programs were then primarily adaptations of motion pictures. The host would introduce each act, and would conduct an interview with the stars at the end of the play. Of the cast of this radio version of The Dark Corner:
William Keighley directed an episode in 1951.
Mark Stevens did an episode in 1955.
Dan O’Herlihy did five episodes.
Joseph Kearns did three episodes.
The character name Ralph Wickett replaced Hardy Cathcart for the radio show. It is likely that they could no longer get legal clearance to use the name Hardy Cathcart, necessitating the change.
Tumblr media
The film featured Ellen Corby as a maid, a role not in the radio drama. Corby went on to be seen as Lucy Ricardo’s high school acting teacher and in several small roles on “The Lucy Show” before her best-loved role of Grandma on “The Waltons.”
Tumblr media
The film also features background work by Sam Harris, who did 15 films with Lucille Ball, in addition to multiple episodes of “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show” as well as Harold Miller, who did eight films with Lucy and two episodes of “I Love Lucy”.
Tumblr media
The film is available on DVD complete with DVD commentary and original trailer.

10 of the Best Spring Getaways on the East Coast
Miami
Lifeguard tower on the beach in Miami/Oyster
It might sound like a no-brainer, but Miami is queen when it comes to East Coast spring getaways. A spring break hub, the city has way more to see and do than just chugging tropical drinks on Ocean Drive (though, a night of that is always fun, too). These days, Miami’s grown-up side makes it an equally awesome spring getaway for families, couples, and singles who aren’t just fresh out of college. We love the slightly more refined hotel-and-pool scene along Collins Avenue north of Lincoln Road in South Beach. But you should also make time to head inland. Wynwood — a prime street-art destination where you can book tours — is Miami’s Brooklyn and is flush with cafes and galleries. Looking for a little bit of culture? Little Havana is the beating heart of Miami’s Cuban community and is definitely worth a visit.
Our Miami Hotel Pick: The Setai Miami Beach
View of South Beach from The Setai Miami Beach/Oyster
Looking for a taste of the finer side of Miami? The Setai is definitely for you. This stunning beach resort features an amazing spa, fitness center, and free yoga on the beach, making this the kind of place where indulging doesn’t just mean amazing food and cocktails.

Savannah, Georgia
The dreamy Savannah Historic District/Oyster
With mild to warm weather, Spanish moss hanging everywhere, and tons of history, Savannah makes an awesome spring getaway. Timing your visit before summer hits means you’ll get to enjoy the city before it withers under Georgia’s heat and humidity. You won’t be alone, though — spring marks one of Savannah’s peak seasons. Why is that? The flowers blooming across the city give it an even more magical atmosphere and there’s a lot to do. Savannah’s cultural calendar comes to life in the spring, with events that include the Savannah Music Festival plus numerous music and dance performances. Feel like partying? Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is legendary as well.
Our Savannah Hotel Pick: Mansion on Forsyth Park, Autograph Collection
The iconic red-brick facade of the Mansino on Forsyth Park in Savannah, Georgia/Oyster
It’s not right in the middle of the city’s tourist scene but that’s the point. That location helps make the Mansion on Forsyth Park is arguably one of the coolest hotels in town. Expect an amazing art collection, a great cooking school, and a well-liked restaurant all on-site.

Charleston, South Carolina
The beach outside of Charleston, South Carolina/Oyster
A bit farther up the East Coast than Savannah, Charleston is equally as packed with tradition and history, all wrapped in an impossibly pretty package that’s been charming visitors for a long time. And like much of the southern U.S., mid to late spring can be beach season here. While the water will be chilly, daytime temperatures often merit showing a little skin and soaking up the sun. That weather also makes strolling the charming Charleston Historic District all the more pleasant. You’ll find the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens blooming, as well as many of the city’s historic private gardens. The late spring also brings the Piccolo Spoleto art festival, which takes place over the course of a few weeks starting in late May.
Our Charleston Hotel Pick: Market Pavilion Hotel
A suite at the Market Pavilion Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina/Oyster
If you’re hoping to be right in the heart of the Charleston Historic District, it’s hard to top the Market Pavilion Hotel’s location — as the name suggests — near City Market. The hotel itself is rich with history and has preserved its Old World style through and through.

Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina
The Biltmore Estate outside of Asheville, North Carolina/Oyster
Springtime in Asheville and the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains is all about the outdoors. While the countryside here is most celebrated during the fall, you shouldn’t skip the spring months. Wildflowers are in abundance at this time of year, and the milder weather only adds to the magic. There are too many hikes to count in this region (check out Hickory Nut Gorge for starters), and the bright flowers of the wild rhododendron are everywhere during the later months of the season. Elsewhere, the gardens of the Biltmore Estate will be in early bloom as will the North Carolina Arboretum. Asheville itself is a great place to spend your day before and after you explore the great outdoors. Expect plenty of microbreweries, cafes, and excellent restaurants.
Our Asheville Hotel Pick: Grand Bohemian Hotel Asheville, Autograph Collection

Berkshires, Massachusetts
Quaint scenes like this are all over the Berkshires/Oyster
This laid-back mountain region is wonderful to explore in the spring — you’ll just need to be prepared for an array of weather. If you head to the Berkshires in March, slopes like Ski Butternut and the Catamount Mountain Resort will be open, as snow is can be in abundance due to chilly temperatures. But if you visit later in the season, consider hiking parts of the Appalachian trail, fly fishing, or bird watching. If the outdoors isn’t quite your thing, the region has great spas, yoga studios, and an amazing art museum — Mass MoCA, which is in North Adams. Towns like Stockbridge and Lenox both have enough to keep visitors busy, from antiquing to cafe-hopping.

Newport, Rhode Island, is a quaint town with plenty of nautical fun. But what makes it so special are the small businesses and artistic culture that’s celebrated year-round. The seaside municipality is also well known for its historical preservation. In the spring, visitors can stroll through town and marvel at the opulent mansions that have made Newport famous, or explore Fort Adams State Park and its 19th-century fort. It might not be beach weather yet, but visitors can still enjoy the stunning Cliff Walk along the coast.

Washington D.C.
The White House lit up at night in Washington, D.C.
Around the world, spring heralds cherry blossom season. And while Japan is the most famous destination for taking in this stunning scene, the U.S. capital puts on a pretty amazing show when it comes to cherry blossoms. The tradition dates back to the early 20th century, when Tokyo gifted Washington D.C. with its first cherry trees. The official festivities generally take place in early April, and include the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Blooms can start in late March, though, so check ahead if you’re bent on visiting during peak bloom.
Our Washington, D.C. Hotel Pick: Mandarin Oriental, Washington D.C.

Catskills, New York
Street scene and antique shops in Phoenicia, New York/Oyster
The Catskills region in upstate New York is quickly becoming a rival to the Hudson Valley when it comes to cute towns and great atmosphere. Enjoy gorgeous hiking trails if it’s warm (May average highs are in the 60s) and epic ski trails if the cold is still hanging around (March average highs are in the 40s). Towns like Woodstock and New Paltz make for great daytime walkabouts — and have their own cool cafe-and-bar scene. Of course, antiquing is high on the list if you’re exploring the Catskills, and the region has it’s own must-visit local institutions, including the famous Phoenicia Diner. Even without foliage, Catskills hikes are stunning and come with amazing views. Check out Gertrude’s Nose in the Minnewaska State Preserve or the Fire Tower Hike in Woodstock (Overlook Mountain) if you’re after amazing scenery.

Manchester is a popular getaway in southern Vermont, tucked up high in the Green Mountains. The town of Manchester itself has great cafes, bars, and outlet shopping, while the mountains offer endless possibilities. March into April is still a great time to ski, and both Bromley Mountain and Stratton — one of the largest ski resorts in the northeast — are 15 and 45 minutes away by car, respectively.

New York Metropolis. The Large Apple. A metropolis so passionately immortalised in creativeness by means of films, TV exhibits, and popular culture that it appears acquainted even when you have by no means been there. The long-lasting Manhattan skyline is immediately recognisable (even after being completely altered by 9/11), its museums and artwork galleries are warrens of surprise. New York is actually a sensual feast.
And now there’s Hudson Yards, a 28-acre neighbourhood playground of the ultra-rich, constructed from scratch on the West Facet. Set atop rail yards, it’s the largest non-public actual property improvement within the U.S., the place swanky residential towers glint within the solar, and workplaces, a lodge, procuring centres, eating places, and artwork installations vie for consideration. New Yorkers have a love-hate relationship with the district—‘open to all, however not for all,’ claimed Forbes earlier this yr. A neighborhood I met on a river cruise censured it as being for the vacationer (like me). It solely made me curious—what’s it that individuals do at Hudson Yards?
  eight a.m.
Hudson Yards certain attracts early birds and maybe those that revere their exercise even on trip. In case you’re one in all them, join a SoulCycle ‘cardio get together’ at 35 Hudson Yards. Hop on an indoor bike and comply with the choreography of your teacher set to some critically high-energy music. However for those who’re like me, get on the Excessive Line (thehighline.org), the two.3-kilometre elevated railroad-turned-public park, from its southern entrance at Gansevoort St. and stroll all the way in which to Hudson Yards. I see artwork installations on the way in which and nice views onto the town and the Hudson River. There’s additionally The Spur, a newly opened part of the Excessive Line (feeding straight into Hudson Yards), with planted balconies, vertical gardens, and cascading wood seating steps in an open piazza. You’ll additionally discover The Plinth, a devoted area for monumental artwork installations; the inaugural paintings is Brooklyn-based sculptor Simone Leigh’s Brick Home, a 16-foot magnificent bronze bust of a African American girl. In case you want a bathe and alter after that stroll/exercise, reserve a slot at 3Den, a pay-as-you-use area which has pristine bogs, nap pods, and free espresso—properly, leisure doesn’t come low-cost at Hudson Yards (www.goto3den.com; stage 4, 20 Hudson Yards, the place all of the retailers and eating places are situated; $6/Rs430 for each 30 minutes).

All retailers nad eating places at Hudson Yards are situated at a procuring complicated referred to as The Retailers & Eating places. Because you’re staying, seize a late breakfast of artisanal pastries and savoury entrées at celeb chef Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery (stage 5) then roll up at BLVD, an expensive spa inside Neiman Marcus (stage 7) for a spot of pampering. In case you’re right here to spend, start at Neiman Marcus (stage 5-7) itself, it’s the division retailer’s first foray into NYC. Drop in at Forty 5 Ten (stage 5) the place artwork meets style, and upcoming expertise and luxurious designers rub shoulders. Elsewhere (relying in your pockets measurement) you have got every thing from Chanel, Dior, and Fendi to H&M, Uniqlo, and Zara. Japanese model Muji has a big area on stage 2 alongside Batch, a classy house furnishings retailer the place the gathering adjustments each two months. There are the same old suspects in magnificence (Sephora, M.A.C, Origins, and so forth.), or pop in at Atelier Cologne (stage 2) to create your personalised fragrance.
  1 p.m.
Wander all the way down to road stage into the full of life Mercado Little Spain, celeb chef José Andrés’ upscaled model of a Spanish market harking back to Barcelona’s La Boqueria. It options two sit-down eating places and an all-day diner, however the focus is on the central mercado (market). Trawl the farm stands and grocery shops for recent produce, sausages, cheese and bread. Then do an impromptu meals crawl by means of the kiosks, sampling an empanada right here, some tapas there, and churros to complete off, interspersed with Spanish wines at one of many three bars.
  Three p.m.
Shake off the post-lunch languor at Snark Park (stage 2), which options immersive exhibitions designed by Snarkitecture, a New York-based design studio. The debut set up I noticed, Misplaced and Discovered, was a monochromatic maze dotted with columns, seating areas, totems adorned with mirror tiles, fake fur, and latex, and way more (https://ift.tt/2ZCLXVF). The area additionally has a retail space with restricted version merchandise like T-shirts and toys, in addition to a Kith Treats ice cream and cereal bar. There’s no lacking the Vessel, the gleaming, copper-coloured centrepiece of Hudson Yards. Designed by the British architect Thomas Heatherwick (who drew inspiration from India’s stepwells for this set up), the 16-storey, honeycomb-like construction is a spiral staircase of types. I consider the The New Yorker calling it a “shawarma-shaped stairway to nowhere,” and lace up my trainers to climb a few of its 154 flights of stairs comprising practically 2,500 steps. I catch my breath at one of many 80 landings for sudden views onto the town. On the prime, I look again at Downtown and Midtown Manhattan after which, flip round for a sweeping view of the Hudson River. Because the solar units, the burnished copper glows eerily. A shawarma? Possibly. However I can’t assist feeling it’s spectacular too (entry free, purchase time-specific tickets at interactive kiosks on-site or reserve on-line; hudsonyardsnewyork.com/uncover/vessel).

Nguồn ảnh: Web gallery of art[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1228499" align="aligncenter" width="736"] Bức 'Blue and Gold" (Xanh và vàng kim), năm 1901. Nguồn ảnh: Web gallery of art[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1228486" align="aligncenter" width="736"] Bức 'Our Village' (Ngôi làng của chúng tôi), năm 1902.

[caption id="attachment_1228487" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Bức 'Dawn of night' (Bình minh của đêm), năm 1909.
[caption id="attachment_1228495" align="aligncenter" width="736"] Bức 'The Closing of an Autumn Day' (Cuối một ngày mùa thu), năm 1901.
[caption id="attachment_1228489" align="aligncenter" width="736"] Bức 'In the Whitewater Valley' (Trong Thung lũng Whitewater), năm 1900.

Family portrait painting night~~ Aly (the baby of Gen 2) aged up to YA (which means she’ll be moving out soon :[ ) so the Forsythes decided to paint some nice pictures. I also needed to get one of Caleb because I didn’t have one I was happy with for his official memorial yet (which is honestly a funny concept when your whole family is vampires/immortal but I still like the idea of having a whole wall of paintings of my family) I plan on having Bufo buy a gallery/art studio soon but I need to get ahead of their household bills first haha (holy shit that is a rant for another post lol)
