Humans have been manipulating live microorganisms to produce food for thousands of years: 2.000 years ago we started to produce bread from yeast. Since then, we learned biotechnology intuitively and without fully understanding the processes, though today is another story.
Tumblr media
Tec de Monterrey's FEMSA Biotechnology Center carries out more than 200 projects a year. It has a staff of researchers from all over the country
What is biotechnology?
More than science fiction, biotechnology is a modern science whose foundations are based on technologies that exploit the biological mechanisms and interactions of living beings. And their applications promise to make life easier. We tell you why.
Applications of biotechnology
Biotechnology starts with the discovery of DNA structure to selectively modify the activity of living organisms. Thus, the design of microorganisms to achieve antibiotics, the creation of microbes to produce chemicals, and cultures of transgenic plants resistant to adverse climatic conditions are some of their applications. Biotechnology is part of a large part of industrial and pharmaceutical processes.
In Mexico, there is a place that has been dedicated to promoting this area of knowledge in Mexico. This is the FEMSA Biotechnology Center of the Tecnologico de Monterrey.
The Biotechnology Centre is a research space for the future. Its creation arose out of the efforts of researchers such as Mario Moises Alvarez and Marco Rito Palomares with the idea of doing science in the country.
"It was at a meeting of professors when the then rector Rafael Rangel Sostmann decided to bet on our work and our desire to do science," recalls Dr. Rito Palomares.
The project began with a modest laboratory equivalent to two classrooms on the Monterrey Campus. They had fewer than 10 students. “We were three researchers with the dream of generating a completely new building, and we started a funding campaign,” says Marco Rito.
One and a half years after the project began, they reached the goal of financing its construction. In a couple of years it was crystallized into what is now a five-level building, with first-world infrastructure, which has allowed it to attract talent from Mexico and the whole planet.
Improving the health of humanity
The Center focuses on nutrigenomics and bioprocesses—to build the foundations of the food of the future—as well as synthetic biology—to create products that can have a proven impact on health.
Their big bet is to develop pharmaceuticals and build the basis for food with cutting-edge and innovative research.
Nutrigenomics could help combat modern pandemics that now require reconciliation between the body and a diet as genes command it. Researchers yearn that we can have in a food the way to prevent cancer, or that in a simple salad there are all the nutrients and vitamins that our body requires.
Tumblr media
The results could not only revolutionize the food industry, they would also mean considerable savings in public spending on health disorders around the world.
“The main concern is the identification of compounds that can be incorporated into food and that can have a proven impact on health. From a cookie or yogurt with unique antioxidant capabilities that stop cell deterioration,” explains Dr. Rito Palomares.
Institutional collaboration
Today, the FEMSA Center has a staff of more than 150 researchers who have been able to attract talent from all over the country. It also has a network of collaboration with other universities that is strengthened by the exchange of students, and the development and presentation of joint projects.
It also has different collaborations with universities such as the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Unique achievements
Some credentials of this center are:
At CB-FEMSA, about 200 projects are carried out each year.
The investment for each project is between 100,000 to one million dollars.
Technology in drugs increases the efficiency and speed with which they act.
CB-FEMSA has obtained, in total, 100 patents in the areas of food, anticancer and antioxidant products, among others.

Carona beer
Difference across the US and Mexican market
For context, in early June 1997, Carlos Fernandez, the new CEO of Grupo Modelo, reviewed Corona beer's export performance to the U.S. market. We know that despite strong growth, Corona lagged behind Heineken in sales. The U.S. remained the largest beer market. The changing ethnic composition of the US market, i.e., growing Hispanic population impacted beer consumption. Heineken continued to import in huge numbers from Netherlands.
Modelo, founded in 1925, experienced significant growth under Pablo Diez's leadership, expanding through acquisitions and modernizing plants. Modelo's diverse portfolio included Corona Extra, Modelo Especial, Victoria, and Pacifico Clara. It dominated the Mexican beer market, leading in exports. In the early 1990s, FEMSA and Modelo engaged in a fierce price war to gain a leading position in the Mexican beer market. The real price level of beer dropped 25.3%. Mexican beer market saw intense competition with Modelo and FEMSA vying for dominance.

A Brew-tiful Rivalry: Does Corona need to change its 'latitude'?
Tumblr media
It is 1996. The USA Beer Market is the number one consumer of beer worldwide, leading a staggering 18.2% (2.62 Billion Cases / year) of world wide consumption of 14.4Billion Cases / year. In the imported beer brand market, Heineken is leading the market with selling 37.2M cases / year and Modelo Corona Extra is in second with 28.9M cases / year sales. While it seems small compared to the overall beer consumption, in 1996, domestic beer consumption was 2.4 Billion cases / year while imported was only 168 million cases / year. Keeping that in context, both Heineken and Modelo Corona account for 66.1M cases / year, which is 39.34% of the imported beer market. The difference between #1 and #2 is huge, and Modelo are at their wits ends on how to overtake Heineken to reign in as the #1 imported beer brand in the USA.
From a branding and strategy aspect, here are a couple of things Modelo did for Corona in USA vs Mexico:
USA Bottle: Long, clear-glass bottles. Non-reuasable
Mexico Bottles: Long, clear-glass bottles. Reusable.
USA Culture: People started squeezing lime into the stem of Corona bottles, leading to a popular 'Corona and Lime' trend.
Mexico Culture: This wasn't the case in Mexico as people would need to give back the bottles, having Lime in them would make it difficult to reuse.
USA Pricing: 'Premium Product' - The price range was comparable to Heineken, that is, 30-40% higher price than domestic beer prices.
Mexico Pricing: 'Price wars' - FEMSA and Modelo engaged in a fierce price war to gain a leading position in the Mexican beer market. Between 1986 – 1993: Real price of beer dropped 25.3%. By 1997 – Real price of beer were only 4.2% lower than 1986 (made recovery of 28%).
USA distribution strategy: They had 2 importers - Illinois-based Amalgamated Distillery Products Inc (ADP) later renamed Barton Beers, and Gambrinus (started by one of their own ex-employees)
Mexico Distribution strategy: They produced and owned almost 85% of their distribution channel, which gave them significant advantage.
Given Modelo's different approach to placing Corona in USA vs Mexico, I wonder if there was a brand dilution or issue in what the brand stands for.
#BeerForThought: They mention that there is a significant hispanic population that has grown in the USA and is projected to continue to grow. By creating this brand confusion of a 'cheaper' product in Mexico and 'premium product' in USA, are they losing out on a home ground advantage they can have with the Hispanic community?
In comparison to the marketing of its competitors, Modelo Corona did the following:
USA Marketing Logo: The Blue, Yellow, and White colors of Corona were instantly recognizable.
USA Marketing Slogan: It centered around the beach and being a fun experience as opposed to being for the sophisticated only. It would have slogans like: "Fun, Sun, Beach", "Vacation in a Bottle"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
TV Ads: Content was kept simple and they were filmed in Mexico in a beach type environment with little to no VoiceOver. No full images of people in ads.
youtube
Agency on USA Marketing: Each importer retained their own advertising agency and Modelo typically financed 50% of the ad expenses and promotions, which helped them keep a check on brand consistency.
USA Marketing Budget: Modelo spend very little compared to its USA market competitors. In 1996, Modelo spent $5.1 Million whereas Heineken spent $15.1 Million and AB spent $192 Million.
#BeerForThought: By having a significantly little marketing budget as compared to its competitors, was Modelo restricting itself? Could it be a lack of reach through advertising and promotion that could help cross the gap between Modelo and Heineken? Additionally, nothing in the TV ads feel aspirational or some sort of justification as to the 'premium' tag of the brand.
Stay tuned to see how this Brew-tiful rivalry plays out! Till then, pop a beer and cheers to your good health.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Drug cartel gunmen burned over two dozen stores and blocked streets with blazing vehicles in western Mexico in a response to a series of arrests of drug cartel figures, authorities said Wednesday.
Images circulated on social media showed men commandeering cars and buses and setting them on fire late Tuesday in the middle of roadways. Others showed burned out convenience stores.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Wednesday that soldiers had confronted criminals, including “bosses,” at a “meeting of two gangs” Tuesday in Jalisco state.
The president said there was a shootout, arrests and “this provoked protests of burned vehicles, not only in Jalisco, but also in Guanajuato.”
The U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state, issued an advisory instructing employees “to follow the advice of local authorities and to shelter in place until further notice.”
“Local authorities and media are reporting multiple road blockades, burning vehicles, and shootouts between Mexican security forces and unspecified criminal elements in various parts of the Guadalajara metropolitan area,” according to consulate.
Oxxo, a national chain of convenience stores owned by Femsa, the country's largest bottling company, said in a statement that 25 of its stores in Guanajuato — which borders Jalisco, home to the cartel of the same name — were either totally or partially burned.
“Fortunately, all of our employees and customers are all right,” the company said.
Videos showed armed men, some shouting slogans in support of the Jalisco cartel, bursting into convenience stores before setting fires, as occupants of the stores fled.
Videos also showed men commandeering cars and buses and setting them on fire in the middle of roadways.
Guanajuato-based security analyst David Saucedo said the Oxxo stores were apparently chosen because of their ubiquity and light security, rather than because of any dispute with the company.
“They are small stores, there are many throughout the state, they don't have security like a Walmart or Liverpool (department store) have,” Saucedo said, adding “they are open at night, and everyone recognizes them.”
Cartels often create such chaos in an effort to keep authorities from transporting captured cartel bosses or to protest arrests.
López Obrador said authorities were still deployed Wednesday in the area of Jalisco where the initial arrests were made.
Jalisco Gov. Enrique Alfaro said via Twitter that no one was injured in the destruction that followed the arrests. He said five people had been detained in the raids and one suspect was killed, but did not identify them.
Jalisco is dominated by the Jalisco New Generation cartel, whose leader Nemesio Oseguera, “El Mencho,” is among the most sought by Mexican and U.S. authorities. There was no indication Oseguera was present at the clash. Guanajuato is the scene of a bloody proxy war between Jalisco and the Sinaloa cartel, which operates through local gangs.
