Frank burying ground
“ BUYUK-DERE, Aug. 12, 1831.
“ About nine o’clock in the morning of the 2d inst., when the alarm of fire was first given, I saw the smoke ascending, and immediately repaired to the spot. It was about a mile from my house, and nearly in the direction of the Frank burying-ground. As I approached, the scene became more terrific, — men and boys running; children crying; women screaming, or beating their bosoms, and nearly fainting; some carrying their babes or infirm relatives; others dragging a part of their clothes and furniture; some making a feeble effort to check the progress of the fire; and a multitude of others, who felt themselves secure, looking on as mere idle spectators.
Armenian women to extinguish
I was not at all aware of the danger which those around me seemed to apprehend, and did what I could to calm their rears and inspire confidence. For near two hours I labored in a large garden, assisting some Armenian women to extinguish the fire, with which their beds and clothes were still smoking. In the mean time, the wind very considerably freshened, and the fire, which it appeared to me might easily have been suppressed at first, began to spread rapidly, and to defy all attempts to arrest its progress. Fire-engines had arrived, and were arriving, but the element, like a wild beast that had escaped from the hand of its keeper, was raging too violently, and had acquired too much power, to be subdued.
“ I must, I think, have made a mistake as to the real situation of my house, or as to the real direction the fire was taking, for I had not the least idea that my own neighborhood would be disturbed. The owner of my house, also, whom I met in the vicinity of the fire, had the same views in regard to the part of the town likely to be affected. I concluded, however, to go home and rest, and after a while return again to afford any assistance in my power.
On the way I met Mr. Lazarides, who has the charge of the Depot of Scriptures at Galata, and who had also the super intendence of a school at Pera on the Lancasterian system, which he had been encouraged to establish by Messrs. Brewer, Barker, and others at Smyrna. He, with many others, was wringing his hands and weeping, and anxiously asked what he should do. I assured him that I fully believed he was in no danger; but, if he thought otherwise, he had better send the slates, books, &c., of the school, and whatever else he pleased, to my house, where they would certainly be safe.

New Post has been published on https://vacationsoup.com/the-beacon-is-calling-you-in-new-smyrna-beach-florida/
The Beacon is Calling You in New Smyrna Beach Florida
Stroll up Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach Florida, and you will find the Beacon is calling you. It is hard to walk by this gem of a restaurant in the mornings and smell the breakfasts being served up.
There is a reason for the full parking lot in front of the Beacon each morning. The patio will also be full of diners enjoying big breakfasts with reasonable prices.
Iconic Fixture on Flagler Avenue 1 Block from Beach
The Beacon is a favorite neighborhood hangout. John and Toula Kotsonis visited here on vacation about 40 years ago, and loved this little beach side town so much, they relocated from their homeland in Greece and established the Beacon. The Kotsonis family still owns and operates the restaurant. Chef and food blogger MacKenzie Smith writes about the Beacon, which is one of her favorite restaurants: "Pancakes: Even if you're not a pancake person, order these. They're made with sweet cream and taste like delicious vanilla cake. The Number Ten: Jeremy's been ordering this hungry man special since he was a little kid. Eggs, bacon, AND pancakes for under $5. Spinach and Feta Omelet: Since a Greek family owns this spot, it's safe to say that anything with feta on the menu is extra delicious. It's my staple that I can't ever stray from. It comes with two sides of your choice. I recommend getting home fries and toasted pita with a side of their house-made tzatziki. Secret Beacon Hot Sauce: I would smother this sweet, spicy, and irresistible chunky hot sauce on my entire life if I could. They don't advertise it anywhere, but if you ask nicely one of the waitresses will bring you an unassuming re-purposed ketchup bottle that is filled to the brim with the good stuff." Turkey Days 25-26
Çeşme -> Izmir
Coming up on the end here.
Yesterday I spent the entire morning in my hostel. Then in the afternoon I took the bus to Izmir, which was only about an hour drive.
I had a bit of a mishap because I didn’t understand that they were dropping me off just outside the city and not at the city center or the bus stop and had a bit of a freakout as I tried to figure out where I was. Izmir is a really big city but not at all a tourist destination, so very very few people speak English. Most of the places I’ve been so far I haven’t had much of an issue with language but for the past few days in Çeşme and now in Izmir it has definitely been an issue.
I figured out that they had dropped me at the end of the metro line and that I could very easily take the metro and then walk to my hostel.
I think the combined exhaustion of this trip and the constant getting used to new cities, and leaving as soon I figure one out, is definitely getting to me.
My hostel is run by hippies. It is a no shoes no keys and no doors establishment. Beds are built into the walls and it’s extremely hot. I bought a fan yesterday to put next to me while I sleep, since last night I woke up three different times in the night to take a cold shower since it was so hot.
Today I was too overwhelmed by everything to even go out. I stayed in my bed until 4pm, then got lunch, then walked for a bit in the beautiful waterfront park, got dinner, and will go to bed soon.
Izmir is a lovely city. Lots of coffeehouses and bookshops and little hipster/hippie places. It’s the kind of city I think I would absolutely love if I spoke Turkish, but the language barrier here is so strong it makes it very difficult to do much here.
For a very long time this city was known as Smyrna and was part of Greece. During the Ottoman Empire it was overtaken by Turkey and renamed Izmir. During WWI Greece took it back and renamed it Smyrna. There was a brutal battle in 1922 at Izmir/Smyrna that resulted in a wildfire that killed over 10,000 civilians and burned down almost all of the Greek and Armenian neighborhoods here. Turkey won, and reclaimed Izmir, and this day is known as the day of the birth of the Turkish Republic. Shortly afterward all Greek Christians were removed from Turkey and sent to Greece, and all living Muslim Greeks were sent to Turkey, even though many of them had been living in the other country for generations. Since there were more Greeks in Turkey than Turks in Greece, this left a lot of abandoned buildings and ‘ghost towns’ which are still abandoned to this day. There are also a lot of people here who are descendents of the Jewish people who were expelled from Spain during the Inquisition, many of whom fled to Turkey. The result is a lot of synagogues here and places with Spanish names.
Tomorrow is my last day in Turkey. I will try to see some more of the sights in Izmir instead of staying in bed all day, then in the middle of the night I will head to the airport to go home.
