Kimberley Moulton, Sovereignty

“There is strength in challenging the status quo, rejecting the pattern that our art, bodies and culture are only noticed when recognised by the white centre. We do not need this, our First Peoples’ ways of being and understanding surpass this, and we do not need to be defined within this canon as we can never fit within something that is constructed from our exclusion.” - Kimberley Moulton[1]

The exhibition catalogue for the ACCA show Sovereignty features discussions around the meaning of sovereignty in a contemporary Australian context and the need for de-colonial, or anti-colonial, artistic and curatorial practices in work that addresses indigenous issues (and also in socially engaged art more generally).

In particular, Kimberley Moulton’s essay “Sovereign art and the colonial canon; Are we lost until we are found?”, refers to many of the issues we were discussing in the class for week 3. She discusses the way in which colonial Australia, both historically and in contemporary practices, has sought to pacify and reinterpret indigenous self-expression through a western lens. She addresses the misconception of indigenous art being “discovered” by westerners, and how Eurocentric art history can work to deny Indigenous self-determination. Moulton’s essay alludes to the damage caused by missionary aesthetes that were discussed in the Diana Maltz reading for this week, and, quoting David Garneau, how so-called “charity” or reconciliation attempts are “smokescreens concealing the machinery of assimilation”[2] and thus do not support Indigenous self-determination (these ideas are also echoed in the Ivan Illich speech “To Hell with Good Intentions” that we looked at in class).

Moulton discusses the importance of centring the experiences of indigenous Australians, similar to the self-determination that is central to RISE’s advocacy methods. She locates a source of immense political power in Indigenous art, writing, and activist practices, stating “our voices cannot be ignored.” In her catalogue essay “Sovereignty: Inalienable and intimate”, Paola Balla also writes on what she terms a “cultural revolution” in indigenous activism, focusing on the leadership of women.[3]

Anti-colonial practice also relates to ideas expressed in the Ellen Feiss reading about the need for a systematic approach to activist art practice that challenges preconceived ideas about concepts such as rights and sovereignty.
