Croydon is a large town less than ten miles south of Charing Cross. Historically part of Surrey and a borough in its own right in 1889, it was incorporated in Greater London in 1965.

It would later be home to the UK's sole international airport in the interwar years, which closed in 1959. The terminal building survives and there is a museum on site.

Croydon is today a major transport hub, home to the only tram network in Southern England, which was opened in 2000 using a combination of old railway lines and new street tracks. East Croydon is the main station on the London to Brighton Line, with fast electric trains to Victoria.

It has a theatre - no Shakespeare currently on though, sadly.

Croydon was within the Metropolitan Police District, so Lestrade is within this jurisdiction.

The Body Shop will close 75 shops in the UK over the coming weeks and cut 489 jobs, according to the firm overseeing its restructuring.

It means that, combined with cost-cutting at the company’s head office, between 750 and 800 people will be made redundant.

However, The Body Shop will keep 116 UK stores open.

The UK arm of the global beauty chain was put into administration earlier this month.

Shops will be closed over the next four to six weeks. FRP Advisory, which is managing the restructuring, said it would “support all impacted staff with claims to the Redundancy Payments Service”.

“In taking swift action to right-size The Body Shop UK store portfolio, we have stabilised the business,” said FRP Advisory’s Tony Wright.

“We remain fully focused on exploring all options to take the business forward.”

The Body Shop was a trailblazer – what went wrong?

The Body Shop was founded in Brighton in 1976 by the late Dame Anita Roddick who opened a single shop in the seaside town. Known for its natural beauty products and its stance against testing on animals, it expanded rapidly in the following years.

Dame Anita and her husband Gordon sold the business to French beauty giant L’Oreal in 2006, much to the chagrin of some loyal followers who viewed the French beauty giant’s business at odds with The Body Shop’s ethos.

Since then, The Body Shop has changed hands twice, most recently to private equity firm Aurelius in late 2023. Within weeks, it decided to place the UK arm in administration following poor sales over Christmas and January.

Wildly popular in the 1980s and 1990s, The Body Shop appeared to fall out of fashion as competitors arrived in the natural beauty market including Lush and Rituals.

Southern Railway – ‘A1X Class’ 0-6-0T No.W3 ‘Carisbrooke’ (77 ‘Wonersh’, 677, B677, W13, BR No, 32677) Terrier on shed at Newport IOW, c1930 by Peter Heelas Via Flickr: The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) A1 Class is an English class of 0-6-0T steam locomotive. Designed by William Stroudley, 50 members of the class were built in 1872 and between 1874 and 1880, all at Brighton Works. The class has received several nicknames, initially being known as "Rooters" by their south London crews. However, the engines were more famously known as "Terriers" on account of the distinctive 'bark' of the exhaust beat. Originally known as "A" class, these diminutive tank locomotives were designed in 1870 to haul commuter trains on the heavily congested lines in South and South-East London. These included routes from London Bridge to both East and West Croydon, London Victoria to Sutton and the line from Victoria to London Bridge via. Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill, as well as operating on the East London Railway under the Thames through the Thames Tunnel designed by Marc Isambard Brunel. Six locomotives were built for these services during 1872 and were successful due to their high acceleration between the closely spaced station stops and ability to haul reasonably heavy trains. A further 44 were thus built between June 1874 and September 1880 to complement the original six. A1X (Terrier) Class 0-6-0T No. W3 ‘Carisbrooke’ (77 ‘Wonersh’, W13, 677, BR No.32677) designed by William Stroudley, built in 1880 at Brighton Works. Rebuilt to A1X in 1911. No.W3 ‘Carisbrooke’ originally started life as LB&SCR No.77 ‘Wonersh’ before coming No. 677 under Southern Railway, renumbered to B677 in 1923 and in May 1927 it was transferred to the Isle of Wight becoming No.3 and was named ‘Carisbrooke’ in August 1928, later in April 1932 renumbered W13. It got transferred back to the mainland in March 1949 and, after overhaul at Eastleigh Works it became BR No.32677. Wandering the Wandle - Part 1

I was chatting with friends in May and mentioned that I was planning on walking the Wandle trail after seeing this article on MyLondon (I think Google pushed the article to me via their news service) - https://www.mylondon.news/lifestyle/beautiful-walk-named-one-londons-26781996 - I was surprised to find that other people wanted to walk it too! Before I knew it four of us were planning the expedition - although due to scheduling issues it turned out that on the day - it was just me and my good friend and fearsome Croydonite Andy that did the trail.

I made my way from my home to East Croydon station and stopped for a cheeky breakfast muffin and cup of coffee at the rather busy for 10:30am Wetherspoons pub on Croydon High Street.

Suitably fortified we made our way along the High Street - past the remnants of busy commerce now left with shuttered up shops and occasional bright spots of casinos, betting shops and newsagents - like a parade of gappy teeth of habitual drunkard. Andy regaled me we talk of his past when as a teenager he would visit the small outpost of the Forbidden planet (miraculously still there) or the roleplaying game shop to spend his pocket money. We continued further down the High Street and past the sight of the burning of the House of Reeves shop in the 2011 London Riots.

We walked along the tram line and observed that Croydon was forged by it's transport links - the brutal dual carriageway and tramlinks cutting through it. Andy told me that Judge Dredd co-creator Carlos Ezquerra spent some time in Croydon during the 1970 and that it is thought that this inspired Mega-City One. We past some grafitti and felt like we were going in the right direction.

And here it was the start of the Wandle in Croydon's Wandle Park - this was culverted in Andy's youth only to be opened up and the once dull park transformed into a haven for wildlife.

From here we crossed the Purley Way and found Waddon Ponds (https://goo.gl/maps/LqDa1mds5GKCmH989) - these are delightful although the map makes them look slightly phallic.

We found some juvenile moor hens hanging out and we discussed the state of politics. The evidence of mills were present.

The route took us along the Wandle - which was quite shallow and stream like - but looked clean and healthly - suburban houses backing on to it. Meadows filled with wildflowers suggested that we might not be in London anymore and in fact be in some bucolic paradise.

We carried on towards the lovely Beddington Park (https://goo.gl/maps/VfWuSASS7vgu757X9) - which was next to the Andy's school - WallingTon County Grammar School - I was particularly taken with the alley known as Bunker's alley for obvious reasons.

Rather pretty - a old stone bridge that Andy would run over as part of his cross-country runs and there was talk of some kind of imitation rite - an assault course type run that involved fording the river. We had to wait for the volunteer army with their wheelbarrows on a narrow bridge. There were geese and a fun island that Andy informed me the big kids would throw smaller kid's rucksacks on to to torment them.
