'Drive for five' complete for CBU men's soccer dynasty

The drive for five is complete at Cape Breton University.

The Capers men's soccer team beat Saint Mary's 4-0 Sunday on home turf to cap their fifth consecutive AUS championship.

They're now a university sporting dynasty. With the five straight titles separated by a COVID-19 lockdown year when all university sports were cancelled, players and coaches agree this one was even sweeter.

"I think the gap in the pandemic adds to it," said men's soccer coach Deano Morley. "So many of these players never got to play for 18 months. For me, 700 people coming out to the game last night, it shows what sport does, it brings people together."

AUS most valuable player Charlie Waters has been around for four of the team's five championships, but agrees this one might mean a little more.

"It was tough," Waters said. "You know, the Zoom calls. Everything being online. And everyone's had a tough couple of years. So it's good to just be back and (have) some sort of normal."

That feeling of normal was in the air at packed sporting events across the Maritimes this past weekend.

The Halifax Wanderers played their final regular season game before another capacity crowd. Then, there was the Blue Nose Marathon. Back in-person for the first time in nearly two and a half years, the streets of Halifax were electric.

"People were excited to be back in person and to have the Blue Nose marathon come back," said Blue Nose executive director Sherri Robbins. "So we saw that through kit pickup, and that carried right through race weekend."

As soon as next week, the soccer field in Cape Breton – and the campus – will be buzzing once again. The CBU women's soccer team hosts the U Sport national championships Nov. 18-21.

As for the men, their focus is now on a national tournament of their own in Ottawa.

"Obviously when we go on that plane, it's back to business. And back to normal, hopefully," said Capers player Ewan Bauld.

Of course, these days what's normal for the Capers soccer team is winning championships.

A = Activities (What kind of things do you do?)

Bar hopping, hanging around the house, and going to the movies. It’s always very mellow kinds of dates.

B = Baby (Do they want a family? Why/Why not?)

Alex is probably not one to have a kid. He doesn’t like them and I don't think that he’d ever really have any leeway on that. It’d just be the two of you till the olden days. 

C = Cuddle (How do they cuddle?)

With your head on his chest, his hands in your hair and your arm under him. You do a lot of your talks in that position, just about your day and such.

D = Dates (What are dates with them like?)

Very down to earth unless you’re out drinking. You both feel safe around one another so when you get some liquid suggestion in your systems it doesn’t always go the way you would hope but it's always fun 

E = Everything (You are my ____ (e.g. my life, my world)

You are his sun

F = Feelings (When did they know they were in love?)

He knew that he was in love when he saw you wearing one of his shirts for the first time. You were walking out of the bathroom after a shower and had forgotten to pack some clean clothes so he just threw on one of his shirts. He called a joke out to you and when you walked in you were laughing, hair wet, blissfully happy. He knew he was hooked. 

G = Gentle (Are they gentle? If so, how?)

He’s mostly gentle. He likes to jump onto the bed and tackle you but he is mostly a very gentle guy. To you anyway

H = Hands (How do they like to hold hands?)

He isn’t a big hand holder but when you’re sitting to have dinner or something he likes to be touching you in some way and hand holding is often the most convenient. 

I = Impression (What was their first impression?)

Alex remembers thinking your shirt was cool. It was loose and it looked like you had just thrown it on while also very meticulously picking it out. 

J = Jealousy (Do they get jealous?)

Very. He isn’t likeable, possessive, he likes that you’re your own person and all but he does get insecure that you’ll leave him for someone better so he does tend to get jealous. 

K = Kiss (How do they kiss? Who initiated the first kiss?)

He kissed you first. The kisses are usually quick and brief when you’re having to move past each other but when you’re alone you can really get into it. 

L = Love (Who says ˜I love you™ first?)

You did. He wasn’t big on the word, he thought it held too much meaning but the second he heard you say it he knew he had to say it back because he did love you. 

M = Memory (What's their favourite memory together?)

His favorite memory is when you went bar hopping the second time and you weren’t really sure how drunk you could really get because you still wanted to make sure he got home alright and then you did shots and lost it. He has a picture of you from that night over the bed. You would have gotten married if you lived anywhere near Vegas. 

N = Nickel (Do they spoil? Do they buy the person they love everything?)

He doesn’t have a ton of money (pre death of roommate) so he wasn’t really able to spoil you but he sure damn tried. 

O = Orange (What colour reminds them of their other half?)

A dark blue. No reason just cause

P = Pet names (What pet names do they use?)

Q = Quaint (What is their favourite non-modern thing?)

He likes to hang out and watch game shows with you. You have kept score of who wins the most by answering the correct questions. Alex is currently winning.

Sure, we all know Angelina Jolie won an Oscar for Girl, Interrupted, or that Halle Berry made history Oscar history when she became the first African American to win a Best Actress trophy (for Monster’s Ball). But did you know that Angelina and Halle respectively starred in videos by… Meat Loaf and Limp Bizkit?

In honor of this weekend’s Academy Awards, here’s a look back at 20 music video cameos by Oscar-winning actresses. For some, these videos were career stepping-stones, or mere detours; for others, they were career lows. But all of them are recommended viewing.

20. Mecano, “La Fuerza del Destino”

No one could have predicted when 15-year-old Penelope made her acting debut, in this 1989 Spanish pop video, that she’d win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar 19 years later for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Incidentally, Mecano broke up in 1992.

19. Parachute, “The Mess I Made” (starring Jennifer Lawrence, 2009)

Silver Linings Playbook Best Actress winner J.Law was a total unknown when she starred in the 2009 video by these Virginia pop-rockers. Parachute frontman Will Anderson later told TeenMusic.com: “She was amazing… We could tell when we met her that she was going places. Here was this amazingly talented actress, and just an incredible person who also happened to be gorgeous. How could we not ask her to be in the video? Seeing her get nominated for the Oscar was amazing. No one deserves it more than her and it’s awesome to see her getting casted in such rad roles!”

18. Robbie Williams, “Something Stupid” (starring Nicole Kidman, 2001)

Robbie’s 2001 album of standards, Swing When You’re Winning, featured duets with Rupert Everett, Jane Horrocks, and Jon Lovitz, but its centerpiece was this adorable collaboration with Nicole — who’d win a Best Actress Oscar a year later for The Hours. Nicole held her own against the British pop star, which makes us wonder, when is her album coming out?

17. iRAWniQ, “ALIENPU$” (starring Tatum O’Neal, 2014)

Tatum holds the record as the youngest thespian to win a competitive Oscar (she won the Best Supporting Actress award in 1973, at age 10, for her role in Paper Moon). The former child star has had her career ups and downs, but has continued to take on challenging roles. Case in point: this dazzling 2014 clip, in which she danced alongside an “alien Rosa Parks” played by rapper iRAWniQ. Tatum even dissected the bizarre, JB Ghuman Jr.-directed video in a play-by-play article for Vice.

16. Roy Orbison, “I Drove All Night” (starring Jennifer Connelly, 1992)

This video starred not only the A Beautiful Mind Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner, but also Beverly Hills, 90210 heartthrob Jason Priestley. It’s a true ’90s classic if there ever was one.

15. Dave Matthews Band, “Dreamgirl” (starring Julia Roberts, 2005)

The Erin Brockovich Oscar-winner and longtime DMB fan made her music video debut in this Alice in Wonderland-meets-Fringe clip; it was first acting job after giving birth to her twins. “I just need the work,” Julia joked to People magazine at the time of the video’s release. Dave Matthews added, “We thought we’d politely give her a hand up.”

14. Will Butler, “Anna” (2015)

Stone won an Oscar last year for the musical La La Land, but we think her casting may have been inspired by her star turn in this elegant Old Hollywood clip by the Arcade Fire multi-instrumentalist.

13. Massive Attack feat. Hope Sandoval, “The Spoils” (starring Cate Blanchett, 2016)

The two-time Oscar-winner shapeshifted from gorgeously dewy SK-II skincare spokeswoman to freaky decomposing zombie robot in this disconcerting clip. Imagine Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” mashed up with Lou Reed’s “No Money Down” for some idea of this video’s creepy impact. We need Blanchett to star in a horror flick!

12. Jenny Lewis, “One of the Guys” (starring Anne Hathaway and Brie Larson, 2014)

The former Rilo Kiley frontwoman convinced Les Miserables‘ Hathaway and Room‘s Larson (along with Kristen Stewart) to dress up in male drag for this colorful clip… but we’re more impressed by the Gram Parsons-inspired, red-carpet-worthy rainbow tuxedo that Jenny is wearing.

11. Limp Bizkit, “Behind Blue Eyes” (starring Halle Berry, 2003)

Halle made some major career mistakes following her Best Actress win for 2001’s Monster’s Ball. And making out onscreen with Fred Durst, in a video for a terrible Who cover from the Gothika soundtrack, may have been her most Razzie-worthy misstep — even if Durst, who directed the clip, told MTV it was “the greatest kiss you’ll ever see.” A decade later, this admittedly makes for fascinating viewing.

10. Renee Zellweger with Ewan McGregor, “Here’s to Love” (2003)

The Cold Mountain Best Supporting Actress winner showed off an entirely different side of herself in this playful ode to the great cinematic era of Doris Day and Rock Hudson, from the retro rom-com Down With Love. Here’s to Renee!

9. Meat Loaf, “Rock ‘N’ Roll Dreams Come Through” (starring Angelina Jolie, 1993)

The Girl, Interrupted Oscar-winner has also made appearances in music videos by the Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz, Korn, and the Lemonheads. But her most epic (and cinematic) music video appearance of all? The one in which she co-starred with Meat Loaf and played a teen runaway, of course!

8. The Rolling Stones, “Like a Rolling Stone” (starring Patricia Arquette, 1996)

Patricia won Best Supporting Actress honors for Boyhood and gave one of the most memorable acceptance speeches in years. Also memorable? Her harrowing depiction of a strung-out party girl in this Michel Gondry-directed, fisheye-lensed clip for the Stones’ fantastic Dylan cover.

7. David Bowie, “The Next Day” (starring Marion Cotillard, 2013)

Marion displayed her own musical chops portraying Edith Piaf in 2007’s La Vie en Rose, for which she won Best Actress honors. She has concurrently pursued a musical career, including an artsy collaboration with John Cameron Mitchell, Villaine, and Metronomy’s Joseph Mount titled “Snapshot of L.A.“ But her best music video cameo was in this controversial, banned-from-YouTube Bowie clip, in which she played a stigmata-stricken prostitute cavorting in a church brothel with a wayward priest played by Gary Oldman. This video definitely deserved an R rating!

6. Tom Petty, “Into the Great Wide Open” (starring Faye Dunaway, 1991)

The Network Oscar-winner joined an all-star cast that included Johnny Depp, Chynna Phillips, and, um, Richard Grieco to play an evil rock ‘n’ roll Svengali. It was clearly the role Faye was born to play. Just call this one Manager Dearest.

5. Devendra Banhart, “Carmensita” (starring Natalie Portman, 2007)

Back before she was a crazy Black Swan, Natalie was dancing in this crazy, Bollywood-inspired video by the eccentric singer-songwriter, who soon became her boyfriend. The relationship didn’t last; maybe Natalie was jealous that Devendra almost looked as pretty in sparkly Bollywood makeup as she did. A pregnant Portman starred last year in James Blake’s “My Willing Heart.”

4. Brandon Flowers, “Crossfire” (starring Charlize Theron, 2010)

This badass, action-packed video, in which the Monster actress rescued the Killers frontman from ninja kidnappers, was soooo much better than Aeon Flux.

3. Tom Petty, “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” (starring Kim Basigner, 1994)

Ah, the creepy “love story” between a morgue assistant and the beautiful corpse girl of his dreams. We’re still trying to decide who was the better actor here: Kim, or Tom himself.

2. Jay-Z, “Many Faced God” (starring Lupita Nyong’o, 2017)

The 12 Years a Slave Best Supporting Actress winner and Star Wars/Black Panther action heroine gave another awards-worthy tour de force performance in this stunning clip from 4:44.

1. David Bowie, “The Stars Are Out Tonight” (starring Tilda Swinton, 2013)

In a bit of inspired casting on the part of director Floria Sigismondi, this video by the late Thin White Duke co-starred thin white duchess Tilda Swinton as his dutiful wife. For years, the uncanny resemblance between Bowie and the Oscar-winning actress had been noted by observers — so much so that an entire Tumblr site was devoted to their separated-at-birth similarity. In 2003, fashion photographer Craig McDean orchestrated a shoot with Tilda during which she dressed up as Bowie, and in 2012, Hint Fashion magazine even published a rather convincing compare-and-contrast blogpost titled “Visual Proof That David Bowie and Tilda Swinton Are the Same Person.” The fact that Bowie and Tilda appeared onscreen on the same time here refuted Hint’s theory, of course.

Anyone can be a leader

You know, the moment I enter the classroom where the screening of candidates was held, I am very nervous. The next thing I knew is that I finished my turn laughing my ass all the way ‘round. Heto, heto yung moment na binabalik balikan ko nung tumatakbo ako bilang College Representative ng AFBA. I just left some sentiments in that room na, I need to develop my character by helping my ppl in ENT. Win-win situation kumbaga cyst.

For a glance, this is my AFBA Family,

They are the one who first handed believed in my capacity to represent the AFBA in the council. Hays. I lab dem berimats tho hindi lang halata hahahahah!

And time flies. Next thing I knew again is that I am seating in the Cultural Building at nakikinig sa Leadership Training Seminar—the second to the council’s bucketlist this year—sometimes murmuring, pero madalas nakikinig because the speaker was very very good! Her words are treasure to mine. I learned, more deeply than I usually heard, the line, “You never stop learning”. Yea cyst, kahit pa nakatapos ka ng doctoral degree mo, still, sobrang dami mo pang hindi alam sa mundo at jan na papasok yung sa leadership attainability mo. What I mean is, as a leader, or even as an individual, kailangan nag gogrow tayo holistically. Hindi pedeng, “I know what I know”. Kasi di tayo nan uunlad! hahahha. Marami nang pilipinong ganan kaya please, wag na u dumagdag!

Another point is that when she came in and start talking, she made a compelling stand na, hindi raw siya ang pinakamagaling na speaker na maririnig namin, or makikilala namin, so on and so forth. But I know what she meant, anyone can disguised as a leader and as a mock leader. I mean, sa typical na LTS, syempre diba mapaguusapan do’n ‘yung characteristics ng kung sino ang tunay na leader and the likes, how to manage BEYOND. She rest her case by saying that no leader can be a leader just for a title; a true leader do not consider the title, he/she cares how to influence/change/motivate one’s perspective in life. And by that, she left me with locked-jaw. 

That was everything. Totoo nga, leadership is not a label nor a title, it is about how you influence someone else’s life.

Flex ko lang yung grupong na hinawakan ko hahaha. Sad lang dahil di na nakapag announce of winners dahil ‘tong team na ‘to, ewan ko ba, di ko sila kinakitaan ng arte nung nasa NIPS station na kame HAHAHAHAHAH. Kaya raw nila ganon ganyan and by result, natapos nila nang maaga. Anyway, nanalo sila sa lahat ng team. I can attest to the teamwork of this group, sobrang present. 

Natapos ang seminar and teambuilding sa school at lilipat naman kami sa resort somewhere in San Felix. Do’n nangyari yung chibugan hahaha

Anywayyyyyy. Further discussion went through when CSC Officers from PUP Main came in. Ginising nila ang mga makabayang adhikain ng aming mga damdamin sa mga isyung kinakaharap ng aming pamantasan. 

Yan, dito ko sila unang nakilala. They actually stayed and prepared themselves beside us (Pat and I). Naguusap lang kami ni Pat abt sa mga buhay buhay namin na namiss namin bec we can’t catch up each other’s time then they introduced their selves. Yung nasa kaliwa, si Kuya Wesley, Presidente ng Student Council ng CCSIS (diko sure! haha) basta IT/Computer lol yon so next is si Kuya Geron, VP ng CSC who tackled NPU Bill then right ay si Kuya Jonero, ang Presidente ng CSC. Alam mo yung nastarstruck ka sa kanila kasi of all the ppl, syempre except kay ate les, kaming dalawa ni Pat ang unang kinausap at nakipagkilala silaaaa. Katuwa, 

So yun. Akala ko tapos na lahat lahat nung Aug 3 then Ate Les asked me on thursday if I wanted to go to LTS again, on the next saturday, August 10. Naalala ko shox, may quiz kami kay Sir Filipinolohiya. E kaso dahil maraming nagudjok na katamaran sa katawan ko ring magreview, hala sige, loaded ako. Friday, nasa trabaho ako non nung nakapagdecide kaya paguwi ko mejo pagod pa ako non hahahhaa. Tas heto na!!!!

I was waiting for the next train to arrive. Time check, 10:39 na mga cyst. Malinaw ang usapan namin sa GC na ang calltime ay 5:40 HAHAHHAHAHA AND LOOK WHO’S GOING TO MANILA BY 10:39???????? I woke up late as I failed to recognized that I turned on my Ultra Power Saving Mode on my phone, this discharges the usage of apps, only those who are selected apps will run KASO, kaso di ko napili yung alarm clock na mag-run. so ayun, walang alarm na naganap. Luckily nagising pa ako HAHHAHAHH pero shet that was 7 something and last update sa GC, nasa Sta Mesa na sila HAHA. Nakakahiya kay Direk kasi siya talaga yung maghahatid samin. (Bale sabe ay GG daw sya sa mga wala haha) 

Heto pa cyst major problem ko. So wala akong pera nung umalis so sabi ko magwiwithdraw na lang ako kaso nagtry ako, kaso failed transaction kasi di pa approve yung cheque ko!!!!!!! in short? i left calamba with only 250 something in my wallet. God saved me when all the food expenses was paid off by the event and only expenditures i have accumulated was transpo fee. Sabi ko nga e, parang pinipigilan ako ng tadhanang di umalis ng Calamba.

When I arrived at PUP Main, I contacted Ate Les and said na I need to go to bank muna to consult my inquiry so dahil baguhan tayo sa Manila at walang kaalam alam, I used google map, very reliable. Sa haba ng nilakad ko, as in, pagdating ko sa banko, sarado. Windang talaga ako. Sabi ko, bahala na. So I travalled to Purezza to go to the Graduate School of PUP in Hasmin Building, don kasi ginanap yung LTS. 

Pagdating ko ro’n, nagsisimula na nga. I see through the wide clear window yung iba’t ibang student leaders from different PUP Branches and Campuses. And there I got my seat with them.

Natawa lang ako dito sa dalawa naming JCO na sina Vixen at Lex na parehas bagsak HHAHAHAHAHA pero at least, maaga sila unlike me. Pero wellllll, iba pa rin ang may 8hrs of sleep! HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH

So moving onnnnn... the seminar with our speaker (in which i forgot the name) is very fruitful. More on leadership den. I can lend you my notes

This lesson has been taught to us by Ate Les. Paulit ulit na nga e pero never siyang magagasgas kasi heto talaga dapat. When serving ppl, despite all your indispensable ideas, strategic planning on events, managing your constituents, kung may attitude ka, waley ka cyst. The concept of attitude first applies to all, hindi lang dapat sa mga tao mo, kundi sa mga kasama mo. What is your defense mechanism when this kind of situation happens. 

Sa totoo lang, I cannot catch up Ma’am because nakikita niyo naman HAHA ang arte ko sa notes ko. Habang nagtatalk sya, ako naman design and take down notes. Wala lang, masaya ako sa ginagawa ko e haha. Basahin niyo na lang yung nakasulat. Ganda ng handwriting ko no, gagawa na nga ako ng font style nyan e. HAHAHHAHAHAH char!

The talk was not that boring. She attacked with different aspects e. I must say, effective syang speaker, same with ma’am na nagtalk samin last LTS sa STB

Moving on. Heto na. Si Kuya Dhel na nagsalita a.k.a. “KD” He talked about Crash Course on Public Speaking. Syempre, if you are a leader, dapat, at talaga, na may knowledge ka sa pagsasalita sa unahan. It is more on communicating with your constituents kung ano nang ganap sa paaralan or dun sa mga tinatarbaho niyo ang the likes. 

Ako naman, since head ako ng committee sa PR&C, ako nangangalaga ng soc-med esp, twitter. I may not communicate before the thousands of iskolars but I can deliver a brawling issues and trends thru twitter. Anyway, lumilihis na ako sa topic ng public speaking hahahhaa.

And that ends the Seminar with Kuya Dhel. After that, may iilang activities pa na pinagsaluhan namin and finally, bonding. 

Alam mo yung feeling na nakausap mo ‘tong mga taong ‘to na madalas sila yung humaharap sa media, ganito ganyan. Na meet mo rin yung mga nakisali, nakidiscourse para lang maipasa yung mga certain bills like Universal Health Care, Tax Tobacco To The Max, and all! nakakastarstruck!

One thing that I’ve learned is that, as a PUPian, we should know that we are one of the critical thinkers in the society. Binansagan tayong, “Balon ng kritikal na Masa,” because we never stop pushing each other’s extreme to meet the desirable result that we want. What I meant is, may mga ipaglabang di dapat ikinukulong lang sa kokote ng bawat isa. Kailangang i-materialized ang mga ito upang maging posible ang mga adhikaing ninanais para sa PUP at para sa bayan,

Natalakay din ang mga isyung SHB Revision at NPU Bill. Dahil dito sa LTS na ito, mas naging firm pa talaga ako sa stand ko. Mas naging sure ako kung saan dapat ako tatayo at sino dapat ang makikinabang ng aking boses. 

Hays. anyway, enough for that. Kasi pagkatapos talagang magtalk ay pumunta na kaming 7th floor cyst. ang taas, walang elevator!!!!

28! 6! 7! 17!!!

6:A song that makes you want to danceOne song to dance to? Just one???? Alright, no, I’m going to list a few. This question is way too hard, so I’ll pick several song. So, first off, I really should mention Gioca Jouer, which is like, my jam. Yes, all of my friends make fun of me for it, but the concept is just too much fun and it’s a catchy group dance: a song telling you which moves to do rhythmically. Bruh I danced this so much. Thennnn there’s Panic Station by Muse, which I remember hearing live once in Bologna and I think it made me strike dance moves I didn’t know I could perform. And then there’s this absolute banger that’ll go down in history as the coolest pop song in history: Take On Me. Like, there isn’t much to say, it’s simply a perfect catchy tune with a perfect arrangement, a perfect weird chorus that puts every single indie pop tune to shame. Then, of course, you can’t tell me you’ve never danced along to YMCA. There’s just no point in lying qurl we’ve all done it. Because this is also an amazing disco tune, just as fun to dance to as all the songs mentioned above (probably as fun as La Macarena), and you can’t say you don’t know the song or that you don’t like. We should send this one to space and let it echo forever as an eternal testimony that we existed. Oh yeah, and also MC Hammer’s U Can’t Touch This which is also a perfect example of a divine song to dance to. That base is just… legendary. Outstanding. It just works. And then to break the 80s bops streak… I should admit I still have a weakness for Shake It Off. *sighs* sorry, I hate her but I just love this song. Can’t do anything about it. But I’m linking the college frat boys’ version because it’s just so fun and good spirited and you also don’t have to see Taylor’s unbearably fake feminist smug face! Win/win. Another recent bop: Call Me Maybe. Yes, it’s a bit creepy and vaguely threatening, but it’s still very danceable. And this time I’ll link Steve Kardynal’s version because it’s just… hilarious. I love him for this (and for All I Want For Christmas Is You). And to end the list (because it’s already very long and wordy) I should mention possibly my favorite Italian song from the 50s (ok, one of my fave Italian songs from the 90s). Now, I absolutely loved this band and this song was in our charts for… forever. Like, a really, really long time. The lyrics are pretty inane, but the melody made us all bounce and I think if you play this at any party with Italians born in the 90s you’ll pretty much start a rave party. Granted. But there’s a lot more songs I love dancing to. God, so many. 

7:A song to drive toLife is a Highway, as sung by Rascal Flatts. Yes, it was in the Cars’ soundtrack. Yes, it was in the road montage scene, so I’m not being very original, but this is the first song that comes to my mind. No, I don’t care that they’re a country band, because I think people’s hate boner for country as a genre is ridiculous and ignorant. The whole of it. I hate the pretentiousness of all these people who write off an entire genre just because it’s “music for white southeners”. Well fuck you, country has a lot of amazing songs, and no, not only Jolene. Fucking animals. 

17:A song that would sing a duet with on karaokeI’VE BEEN WAITING ALL MY LIFE FOR THIS QUESTION. THE ANSWER IS EASY. COME WHAT MAY. Notting Hill is definitely up there as one of my most rewatched movies ever (Moulin Rouge is number two, right after the LOTR trilogy). But I would also sing the cover of Roxanne, again from Moulin Rouge. THIS MOVIE IS SO PERFECT FOR ME, FOR MY AESTHETIC, FOR… EVERYTHING. IT WAS WRITTEN AND FILMED BY GOD HIMSELF, POSSESSING THE BODY AND MIND OF BAZ LUHRMANN. God, how pretty was Ewan??? God. 

28:A song by an artist with a voice that you loveGoing italian again because why the fuck not. Spreading some good Italian music outside of what’s famous outside of Italy. So the obvious guess would be Mina, right? Yes, she has a beautiful voice. But I really love Giorgia’s 90s songs. And among those, I’d pick E Poi (NOT the ugly, butchered re-recorded 2001 version though!!!! Eaux :///). Aka one of the songs that moved me the most, among hers. Gocce di Memoria is a close second. She also sang cute, warm, lovely songs like Girasole though. Another artist I love (Italian again) is Elisa. Her 90s songs are, again, my favorite. And my absolute favorite is Labyrinth. THAT CUTE BEAUTIFUL VOICE. Ugh. Wish I could go to one of her gigs so bad… I love her…… so much… ok let me link another couple: Luce (Tramonti a Nord-Est) (yes I’d already linked this in another post but I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH) and proof that she’s still got it :) GOD I LOVE THIS WOMAN. My Top 10 Favorite Musical Movies

I love top 10 lists for no legitimate reason, and I really don’t understand why they’re a thing other than the fact that they’re somewhat pleasing in some inexplicable way. So here’s one of my “Top 10s” lists. Enjoy

10. Into the Woods

Honestly, this one just makes this list because I enjoy shitting on it. Although it was decently cast, I’m still not sure what Johnny Depp was doing as the wolf (or even why the wolf was present? Does he actually serve a purpose to the ultimate story? Didn’t think so). Anna Kendrick is always charming, and frankly, her “On the Steps of the Palace” song was just fabulous. And sure, intertwining fairytales sounds like a cool or innovative idea, but seriously, it’s been done so many times (re: abc’s Once Upon a Time, Cornelia Funke’s Reckless books, etcetera)--and perhaps Sondheim did do it before it became a “thing”--but the movie comes across as tacky, boring, and generally pointless. Next.

9. Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Also known as, What Happens When Tim Burton Directs a Musical. It’s almost so gaudy it works, but not quite. Helena Bonham Carter does some good work in this one, but certainly not her best. It’s almost a shame to see someone who has done such beautiful movies as A Room with a View and The Wings of the Dove fall into this constant cycle of playing these borderline goofy characters (see Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Dark Shadows, etc.--none of which I did not enjoy, by the way; I absolutely loved all three of these mentioned films, but HBC plays such one-dimensional characters it’s f r u s t r a t i n g. Johnny Depp was actually nominated for a Golden Globe for this movie, which I don’t think was necessarily called for, but did he win? Nope. Wasn’t going to. When the kid and the mostly mute prison girl are the best parts of the cast, something isn’t working right. Plus, the movie was just so gray. I get it, London is no pretty city, but--oh, wait, yes it is. London’s beautiful, shut the fuck up.

8. La La Land

Oh, La La Land. So right, but so, so damn wrong! I adore this movie, although it took me three times to watch the full movie to get to this point of appreciation. When I first left the cinema, I was livid. I had gone with my aunt and uncle for my birthday, and we all left just frustrated. Damien Chazelle had given us such a visually stunning and cinematically innovative film, but he also gave us a shit excuse for a love story. Honestly, Mr. Chazelle, please don’t write another script. Leave that to actual writers. You stick with cinematic brilliance, hun. Thanks, x. Justin Horwitz, however, ABSOLUTELY KILLED IT. The music is astounding. Simply astounding. I had the privilege of seeing La La Land at the Hollywood Bowl with a live orchestra, and damn, it was good. It was so good. Ryan Gosling is nothing special (unfortunately!), and as much of a bitch as Emma Stone’s Mia is, she absolutely deserved that Oscar. Now about the singing: frankly, I didn’t mind it. I have friends who hated it (because they’re trained singers so they have a bit of a superiority complex about these kinds of things), but as someone who cannot particularly sing well myself, I enjoyed seeing two more realistic characters thrown into a musical world and pull it off more than adequately well. 

7. The Phantom of the Opera

I want to rank this higher. I really, really, really do. But for obvious reason, I cannot. The singing is mediocre, and the acting is even worse. I don’t know who cast Gerard Butler, but yikes. A lot of the editing is rather shoddy, and as much as I do love Minnie Driver as Carlotta, they should have chosen an actual opera singer instead of choosing a decently known Hollywood name. Also, the deformity is literal horse shit. Just horse shit. But now the good things: 1. Patrick Wilson; yes! I absolutely love his Raoul. He’s tragic and a little girly and a bit of a pussy but so in love that he steps up when he needs to. And his voice is arguably the best in comparison with his coworkers’. 2. The cinematography and set design are stunning, absolutely stunning. I get the chills every time the chandelier is raised during the “Overture”, and although the Phantom’s lair isn’t exactly a house on a lake, I thought it was very reminiscent of the stage production, which I appreciated greatly. 3. The costumes! Jesus! Although Christine’s “Think of Me” dress does not go with the time period of the opera she’s supposed to be performing and the Phantom’s last few costumes are waaaaay too hot, I thought the costume department did a fabulous job creating dazzling costumes that just worked with the whole “pretty” feel of the film. 4. They nail the story. I remember watching Phantom as a child and sobbing every time I finished it. The Phantom doesn’t deserve Christine, but he deserves to know what love is just like any other man, and in telling this, the story succeeds. 

6. Grease

I’m not one for teen movies, I’m just not. Clueless is nice, and Heathers has a special place in my heart, but I’ve never been into the whole high school drama film thing. Still, I must admit that I loved Grease. I refused to watch it for the longest time because I had a friend who literally based his entire look on Danny Zuko, and it was so obnoxious I refused to watch the film. Plus John Travolta has always sort of creeped me out. But I gave in, and I was so surprised. Olivia Newton-John is just darling as Sandra Dee, John Travolta isn’t unbearable as Danny Zuko, and Frenchy is such a charming character, but the one person I think gets so overlooked but could be such a show-stealer is Rizzo. Stockard Channing set the bar high for this character, as she does a fantastic job conveying the too-cool-for-school but has-a-heart-of-gold-kinda Rizzo. My favorite player on the Chicago Cubs is Anthony Rizzo because of this movie (Can you tell I’m not a huge sports fan?).

5. Chicago

Many people call this the best musical movie ever made, and really, it’s very, very well done. I mean, it is. A movie doesn’t get six Academy Awards just because. The dancing is actual fire, Richard Gere is one dazzling bastard, and Catherine Zeta-Jones absolutely steals the show as Velma Kelly. Sorry, Renée Zellweger. Zellweger's Roxie is charming, sure, but she comes off as so weak a character and a person that it’s difficult to even enjoy most of her scenes. The set designs are nothing spectacular, but what makes everything come together is the musical numbers (somewhat ironic, because almost every musical number physically departs from the story’s setting). “All That Jazz” is a killer opening, Queen Latifah’s “When You’re Good to Mama” is too much fun, “Cell Block Tango” practically changed the game for musical movie choreography, and where do I even begin with “Roxie”? Spoiler: it was Zellweger’s most convincing scene, but that’s almost completely due to the choreography and set design. Chicago will certainly be studied in film schools in years to come. As much as there is on the surface of the film, there is so much more than meets the eye, and for all these reasons, Chicago is a fabulous, fabulous film.

4. Les Misérables

I actually considered ranking this between Phantom and Chicago but ultimately decided to move it up. Victor Hugo’s novel is a challenge for a number of reasons, but chief among them being the massive span of time his novel covers. So a musical version obviously has to fit this all within three hours, and say what you will, I do believe Les Mis does a good job. The story is obviously cut down tremendously, but it really does not lose much (if any) of the message it has to offer. Now, the film is not perfect. For instance, I absolutely hated Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. I really did. A lot of people hated Amanda Seyfried, but I really loved her portrayal of Cosette (but maybe just the acting part, her singing is a bit shaky). Samantha Barks and Eddie Redmayne are class-acts, and HBC does a fine job as Mme. Thenardier. I almost have nothing to say about Anne Hathaway. Her performance speaks for itself. I sob every time Fantine dies. She is so, so, so, so good. And three cheers for Colm Wilkinson. He’s just a great guy and a great performer. The film’s direction is often debated, whether it is good or bad, but I really thought it was quite good and quite different from what others might have done. Tom Hooper took advantage of the screen in ways the stage cannot be taken advantage of, offering the audience a chance to look closely at the faces of the actors, to really appreciate the emotional tolls the characters endure.

3. Cabaret

Liza Minelli embodies Sally Bowles. I mean, never have I ever believed so strongly that an actor was born for a role, but Minelli was born for Sally, and as the soul of the show, she breathes life into the film and somehow manages to carry the story on her shoulders. Joel Grey is a fantastic Emcee, and the supporting characters are great as well. Although I don’t care for several of the subplots, I thought the primary storytelling was borderline flawless (except for the ghastly ending; Lord help me, I have so many qualms with the ending; the level of vague is off the charts and unnecessarily so). But the singing is splendid and the dancing is spectacular. The way the Kit Kat Club fits into the story almost as a character itself is subtle and brilliant, and just about every single set is exactly how I imagine it should be. Again, Liza Minelli was born for this, and she rightly won the Oscar for Best Actress. Go you, Liza. Lots of love, x. 

2. Moulin Rouge!

Usually, I would consider Moulin Rouge! my favorite movie of all time, but I’ll explain in the next entry why this is not the case for this list. Like I said, this is my favorite film of all time, and for a plethora of reasons. 1. It is unique and innovative; Moulin Rouge! made the 21st-century musical possible, and everything from Chicago to La La Land owes much to Baz Luhrmann. 2. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman’s chemistry is everything. They work well together, they sound good together, and they carry Luhrmann’s admittingly wild storytelling techniques with grace and fun. 3. The sets and general production design. This entire movie was filmed in a single room (granted, a very, very large room), but Luhrmann creates a world so vivid and so alive that it hardly feels claustrophobic. 4. The music is different but familiar and well-orchestrated. Luhrmann did something most people wouldn’t even think twice about doing because it’s “tacky” or “unoriginal”, but he instead takes familiar and beloved songs, sets them all to a beautiful story about love and loss, and creates a new musical so vibrant, it changed the face of the musical genre. 

1. The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music. Arguably the greatest musical of all time, The Sound of Music is a timeless story of faith, love, war, family, and hope. The only musical on this list based on the actual events of Maria Kutschera and her life as the governess and step-mother of the von Trapp children, The Sound of Music embodies everything a musical (and a good story!) should be. Life is no fairytale--it is full of hard times and beautiful times and times when it seems the whole world will collapse upon itself. Life is no fairytale, and as beautiful as this film is, it relates to its audience real life morals and real life messages that should be taken to heart by anyone in search of a happy life. Julie Andrews is the only person to embody a character more than Liza Minelli embodies Sally Bowles, and her Maria is a sweet, powerful, kind woman, who, though unsure of the direction her life will go, stands for what she believes in and positively changes the lives of so many along the way. Christopher Plummer is the perfect Captain von Trapp, and the children are perfectly cast as well. Actually, fuck it, the whole cast is perfect. Governess Elsa Schräder, Max Detweiler, and the Mother Abbess are flawless secondary characters, who come and go throughout the film flawlessly. I would also like to note how it stayed in cinemas for FOUR YEARS after its release. Now that’s a bloody good film. The sets and cinematography are fabulous, the script is so well done it’s unreal, and the songs--the songs!!!--are as good as they are iconic (and damn, are they iconic).

Golden Globes. Awards Time. Back At It.

Tis the season for awards. In 2019 I missed blogging the ENTIRE awards season due to travel. Seriously, I missed the entire season. I cannot even explain how hectic the first three months of last year were. Fucking insanity.

But, bitches, I’m back and I’m ready to blog the shit out of the 2020 awards season.

The Golden Globes are kind of a mess. They’re a little sloppy. They’re a little drunk. They’re a little odd. But who doesn’t love them?

Ricky Gervais was amazing. He does not give a fuck. Not a single fuck. He literally told the stars to not make political statements, thank their agents and get the fuck off the stage. Bless him. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson both looked offended. Adam Driver laughed a bit. Martin Scorsese laughed a touch. Bobby DeNiro politely chuckled. That’s the kind of uncomfortable shit I like to see at an awards show.

The TV awards have been weird. Rami Youssef won for his self-titled show. Stellan Skarsgaard won supporting actor for Chernobyl which I don’t care about. Succession was the best drama. I half care about that because it’s a soapy show about rich people behaving like shit and also features Kieran Culkin and I do love a child star who figures his or her shit out and transcends child stardom into an adult career. Phoebe Waller-Bridge won for actress in a comedy. I truly do not believe Fleabag is a comedy primarily because it’s not funny, in my opinion. Maybe I just don’t get it.

Foreign language film went to Parasite after being presented by the always bland Sienna Miller. I just don’t get why she’s a thing. But Parasite is FUCKING amazing. The director’s speech was FUCKING amazing. We two trillion percent loved this movie.

Pierce Brosnan is aging well. He’s here to introduce his sons who are sharing the Golden Globe ambassador duties in 2020.

Kate McKinnon is making me cry. The Ellen clip reel also made me cry. Jesus Christ. Oh, and also, Carol Burnett looks incredible. I love that woman. I love Ellen. Who doesn’t? It’s insane to me to think that it was 1997 when she came out on TV and then was basically blacklisted for doing so. How stupid is that shit? But she’s really come out on top. So I guess it’s really a big middle finger to a whole lotta dumb asses, no?

Back to TV awards. Brian Cox wins for TV drama actor in Succession. I’m getting more intrigued by this show.

What are Ewan MacGregor’s shoes? I’m not feeling them. But Margot Robbie looks kick ass and so does her dress. Thrilled for Quentin Tarantino winning screenplay because Once Upon a Time….in Hollywood is awesome. It’s definitely one of my favorite Tarantino movies.

What the fuck is Missing Link and how did it win for Animated Feature?

Brad Pitt and Leo are fucking movie stars. That’s it and that’s that.

What in the ever-loving fuck is Gwyneth Paltrow wearing? Is it fur? Is it lace? Why is it copper? Why is the necklace underneath the lace? Ugh. Disaster. But very happy for Laura Dern winning supporting actress. We watched Marriage Story over the holiday break and it’s hard to watch but the performances are stellar. Laura Dern is butter.

Is Nick Jonas wearing a bolo tie? What the fuck is the thing around his neck? Priyanka Chopra is gorgeous. Fleabag wins for comedy series. I stand by previous assertions that this show is not a comedy. Am I way off base? Convince me I’m wrong.

Jason Momoa and Zoe Kravitz presenting together is cute. I don’t why what Patricia Arquette won for. The Act? What the fuck is that? Why is she wearing sunglasses? What are her boobs? She got political as Arquette’s are known to do. Olivia Colman wins for actress in a TV drama. She’s nuttier than a fruitcake. Her dress is nuttier than a fruitcake as well. I love that she just admitted to getting a little boozy. Because that’s the damn point of this show. Everyone should be tipsy. Not wasted because it’s still on TV but definitely buzzed.

Charlize Theron’s dress is weird. Her necklace is slick though. I think she’s an odd choice for introducing Tom Hanks and his Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. There’s GOT to be better friend to present this. Denzel? Gary Sinise? Sally Field? Whatevs. The clip reel was stellar. People REALLY seem to love him. Oh, they just panned to Beyonce. Her dress looks like it’s eating her. But back to Tom Hanks…..his speech is lovely. He’s super emotional and it’s making me emotional.

Ricky Gervais is really hot on the fact that no female directors were nominated for best director. The audience isn’t having it. Sam Mendes just won for 1917. FOR REAL? Of all the directors nominated, I would have assumed he would be the last one to win. How? He’s basically directed a the World War I version of Saving Private Ryan, right? I dunno if we’re going to see that one. I just don’t care. Primarily because we’ve seen this movie before WITH TOM HANKS.

What is up with boobs tonight? Salma Hayek is busting O-U-T. Tiffany Haddish is crazy. I think she’s hilarious. I cannot wait to watch her Netflix stand up special entitled Black Mitzvah. Even the title is a riot.

Some Icelandic woman just won best score for Joker. I’m sure she knows Bjork. Who is insane.

I’m unclear on what J. Lo is wearing and is A-Rod present? I’ve really come around on J. Lo. She used to really drive me crazy. She doesn’t anymore.

Very happy for Brad Pitt for winning supporting actor.  Like Brad a lot and I think he’s long been an underrated actor. I think he’s going to get his allllll awards season. And that category was stacked with MOVIE STARS. But good for Brad.

Chris Evans is hot. I don’t care who knows it. He’s fucking hot. And so is Scar Jo. She looks incredible.

Wait. How did Taron Egerton just win for actor in a musical or comedy over Leo and Eddie Murphy? OK. Do I need to see Rocketman? I just don’t want to because I super, duper do not care about Elton John. I know it’s kind of gay sacrilege but he’s just not my favorite.

YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Awkwafina just won for comedy actress in The Farewell. Have you seen this movie? It’s WONDERFUL. Legit wonderful. It’s funny. It’s touching. It’s just a sweet story. We loved this movie.

For a moment I was concerned Rocketman was going to win for best musical or comedy but, thankfully, Once Upon a Time…..in Hollywood won, as it should. These wacky Hollywood Foreign Press nutjobs like to really throw curveballs.

Glenn Close is looing resplendent in velvet. Joaquin Phoenix takes home best actor for Joker. I had VERY low expectations for that movie and upon exiting the theater I would actually call it a film. It was really good. But Joaquin is really blowing it with his speech. Is he high? Is he drunk? Or is just that weird? This is sooooooooo awkward. It’s stressing me out. Thankfully he responded to the playoff music.

Renee Zellweger is back in Judy and she’s winning awards. She really transforms for this part and it’s a very stressful movie. Why is she sounding so hokey? I guess she’s from Texas but is this normally how she talks? Oh, they’re going to play her off too. Apparently the HFPA and NBC are done with this how. I am as well. It’s been a bit of a snore apart from the monologue, Tiffany Haddish and Amy Poehler.

And 1917 wins best drama. I’m stunned and I literally do not care. I do not care one iota.

With that, awards season is off to the races. Let’s do this!!!!

Pero ang nakakalungkot, wala masyadong standout na merchs to show #UPFight or something na to mark this day. OA siguro itong insight na ito, pero ako lang ha? Ako lang ito. Syempre ibang league naman ‘yung mga naghalungkat pa ng old shirts nila na ni-reserve nila for the game and all, pero ayun nga. Sana may pa-jacket. Favorite kong store talaga ‘yung isang merch store sa nasunog na SC sa Diliman. Ang ganda ng quality. Maganda rin ‘yung New Era cap na nakita ko sa isang Isko nung weekend. Tapos ang favorite ko is ‘yung

Even sa college ko mismo, bumabaha ng mga galing sa exclusive schools. Puno ang carpark tapos normal na lang ‘yung Macbook na 15 inches. Mas usual ang 13-inch Macbook. Again, personal opinion ko lang ito ha? Pero napapaisip ako many times kung asan na ‘yung mga estudyanteng talagang kelangan ng aid para maging legit iskolar ng bayan? Hindi ko naman sinabing ‘wag tanggapin ng UP ‘yung mayayaman or ‘yung can afford, pero ‘di ba? Fan ako ng cheerdance nung kabataan ko, pero napansin ko kasi walang innovation ‘yung mga bata these days. Parang same old routines na lang. Hindi ko lang alam kung ako na naman lang ba ito pero, damn. Aminin ko, naluha ako nung nakita ko ng live ang UP Pep Squad. Magaling ang stunts. Gaganda nilang lahat.
