"This head-on photograph of NASA's space shuttle Columbia was taken during post-landing servicing on Rogers dry lake bed at Edwards Air Force Base in southern California. The STS-1 mission ended earlier today, two and one third days later and thousands of miles removed from Sunday's Florida launch setting. Astronauts John W. Young, commander, and Robert L. Crippen, pilot, were Columbia's first crew."

    NASA and Boeing teamed up to produce the X-48C, a subscale prototype that first flew in August 2012. Creating small flying models to test new ideas is faster, safer and less expensive than building full sized research aircraft. The new idea here is the Blended Wing Body. This idea improves efficiency and capacity for future airline designs.
    One of the design goals here was to lower the noise of an airliner. Over the decades, jet engines have made huge advances in noise reduction, but less has been done about the sound generated by the aerodynamics of the ship cutting through the air. Deploying landing gear and flaps creates drag, thus creating noise. These devices are used at low level (during takeoff and landing), when the noise level of the aircraft is most critical. This design strives to make those non propulsive parts quieter by “sculpting” them into the body in a more efficient way.
    The windows on the model are not just for show. A small camera sits behind the windows, feeding a ground based pilot a view from the tiny cockpit, allowing them better situational awareness during the flights.
    This X-48C is on display at the Air Force Flight Test Museum on Edwards Air Force Base, California, serving as a precursor of things to come. Like so many aircraft that have graced the flightline of Edwards, this may serve as the aircraft of the future.

STS-31 Discovery, Orbiter Vehicle (OV-103), glides toward EAFB landing
"Low angle view of the Space Shuttle Discovery as it approaches for landing on a concrete runway at Edwards Air Force Base to complete a highly successful five-day mission. It was a long awaited Earth orbital flight during which the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was sent toward its 15-year mission. Discovery's wheels came to a complete stop at 6:51:00 a.m. (PDT), April 29, 1990. The landing gear was deployed just moments after this frame was exposed. Inside the spacecraft for STS-31 were astronauts Loren J. Shriver, Charles F. Bolden, Bruce McCandless II, Kathryn D. Sullivan and Steven A. Hawley."

Il problema è che la fine di tutte le restrizioni scattata a inizio settimana, nel pieno della terza ondata del Covid dovuta alla variante Delta, ha provocato una impennata dei contagi, forzando sempre più persone all’isolamento: solo nell’ultime settimana sono 600 mila quelli finiti in quarantena. Da più parti si chiede che chi è completamente vaccinato sia esentato dalla quarantena, ma il governo è irremovibile: il sistema attuale rimarrà in vigore fino al 16 agosto, tranne rare eccezioni nei settori dell’energia e delle telecomunicazioni. Per la Gran Bretagna sarà un’estate calda.
Abbia pazienza, sig. Ippolito, ma a tutto c’è un limite. Se le restrizioni sono state tolte a inizio settimana, e siamo a giovedì, si immagina che lei l’articolo l’abbia scritto mercoledì. Quindi in due giorni ci sarebbe stata l’ecatombe?
Il problema, a nostro parere, è composto di due parti. La prima: la linea editoriale del Corriere al riguardo dell’UK è quella, sbandierata dal Nando Mericoni di Via Solferino (aka Beppe Severgnini), che la Brexit porterà i quattro cavalieri dell’apocalisse al galoppo dalle scogliere di Dover fino al confine scozzese. La seconda: non siete buoni a fare la propaganda (e guardi che non è un insulto); per esempio mettete una fotografia di un “supermercato vuoto” e ci sono vuoti due scaffali, mentre si vede benissimo che il resto è pieno.
“Per la Gran Bretagna sarà un’estate calda”, dice lei; può essere. Ma non è che qui a sud sia uno spasso.
