Shortly after news broke Monday of a fatal shooting at a private Christian Nashville elementary school, police said the suspect was transgender. This detail, according to trans people in the state, has poured fuel on an already combustive environment that has led many of them to fear for their safety.
Police say Audrey Hale, who was killed by responding officers, fatally shot three 9-year-old students and three staffers at The Covenant School. Though police have said there is no known motive for the shooting, some conservatives have blamed the shooting on the suspect’s gender identity.
Within 10 minutes of police saying that the suspect was transgender, the hashtag #TransTerrorism trended on Twitter. Around the same time, Republican lawmakers — including Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, and conservative firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. — insinuated in social media posts that the shooter’s gender identity played a role in the shooting. And by Tuesday morning, the cover of the Rupert Murdoch-owned New York Post read: “Transgender killer targets Christian school.”
“We are terrified for the LGBTQ community here,” Kim Spoon, a trans activist based in Knoxville, Tennessee, said. “More blood’s going to be shed, and it’s not going to be shed in a school.”
Denise Sadler, a drag performer who is transgender, said she had already hired four armed guards before Monday’s shooting to secure a drag show she is hosting at a gay bar in Nashville this weekend. Following the anti-trans rhetoric spawned by the shooting, Sadler said she is now planning to hire eight.
“You don’t know if [the shooter’s gender identity] is going to trigger a community of people who already hated us to come and try to shoot us to prove a point,” Sadler said. “At the end of the day, there’s a lot of hurt going on, there’s a lot of anger going on, there’s a lot of confusion going on.”
During a press conference Tuesday, Nashville Police Chief John Drake said a motive for the shooting was still unknown. The day prior, however, his response when asked if Hale’s identity was connected to the motive left the door open to speculation.
“There is some theory to that,” Drake said. “We’re investigating all the leads.”
It is also unclear how police knew that the suspect was transgender.
Trans men are assigned female at birth and identify as men, while trans women are assigned male at birth and identify as women. When asked Monday whether Hale was a trans man or trans woman, Drake said “woman,” though Hale’s LinkedIn account and interviews with those who knew Hale indicate otherwise.
Bill Campbell, the headmaster of The Covenant School from 2004 to 2008, said Hale attended the school as a child in 2005 and 2006 and identified as female during that time. As an adult, though, it appears Hale may not have identified as female. Hale’s LinkedIn page, which has since been removed, states that Hale used “he” and “him” pronouns. And a friend of Hale’s, Averianna Patton, who said Hale messaged her shortly before the shooting, said Hale signed the message “Aubrey (Aiden),” using Hale’s given name along with a traditionally male name.
Aislinn Bailey, the acting president of Tri-Cities Transgender, a trans-led support and advocacy group based in Johnson City, Tennessee, said her initial reaction to news that the suspect was transgender was fear.
“I knew that as soon as anyone mentioned that, it was immediately going to become the center focus instead of what should be the focus, and that’s gun violence in this country,” Bailey said.
She condemned the choice by police to release information about the suspect’s gender identity when they did not appear certain about it.
“I think it was unethical and highly suspect that information like that, which they had to have known could cause backlash on the trans community — releasing information like that without it being verified, that’s unconscionable as far as I’m concerned,” Bailey said.
She added, “We were already fearing for our lives. Now, it’s even worse.”
Over the last several years, historic numbers of bills targeting LGBTQ people have been introduced in state legislatures across the country, including in Tennessee’s. This year, state lawmakers filed more than 400 such bills — more than half of them targeting trans people specifically — according to the American Civil Liberties Union and a separate group of researchers who are tracking the flow of legislation.
So far this year, Tennessee lawmakers passed two bills targeting LGBTQ people: A first-of-its-kind law that will criminalize some drag performances takes effect Saturday, and another that will ban gender-affirming care for the state’s minors becomes effective July 1.
Nathan Higdon, the chief financial officer of Knoxville Pride Center, is helping organize protests against the new drag law in Nashville and Knoxville this upcoming weekend. Higdon said that while he and other organizers are “scared shitless” that the conservative backlash over the shooter’s suspected gender identity will prompt violence, they’re going forward with the events as planned.
“The people who hate us are always going to hate us,” Higdon said. “We can’t not do these things. We just can’t not show up.”
Threats and attacks of violence directed at the LGBTQ community have spiked recently, with drag performances becoming a particularly popular target.
Last year, there were at least 140 incidents of protests and threats directed at drag events, which have deep roots in the queer community, according to the LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD.
Just last week, one man was arrested and another was left bloodied as dozens of people protested a Drag Story Hour event in New York City, and on Sunday, an Ohio church alleged on its Instagram account that it had been vandalized with Molotov cocktails after advertising that it would be hosting a Drag Story Hour event in April.
Jace Wilder, the education director for the Tennessee Equality Project, a Nashville-based LGBTQ advocacy group, said the suspect’s gender identity “does not change the horror of what they did no matter their reasoning.”
“It is unfair and inappropriate to ask trans people to speak on this person and the lives they took,” Wilder said in a message to NBC News. “We, just like all other Tennesseans, are mourning. There is no politics I could possibly care about right now when children are dead. End of story. I pray and will stand with the families of all the victims and for peace for our community and I hope we can all show up for them and each other in this time.”

Costa Blanca South Bowls Roundup 24 Nov 18
El Rancho Bowls Club Having had all Monday’s league matches postponed, we played the first of the on thursday, that being the Pintos at home to Greenlands Sycamores. The Pintos found the line and length a little quicker than the Sycamores, as you would expect and took the 5 rinks and hence the overall shots. Ann C Taylor, Diane Yates and David Whitworth 21-11. June Whitworth, Sheila Cooper and Carolyn Harris 20-16. Malc Sykes, Denise Morgan and Jim Gracie 30-10. Irene Thomson, Bob Morgan and Eddie Thomson 32-9. Brian Harris, Keith Cunningham and Bob Taylor 21-12. Friday morning found the Mustangs at San Miguel against the Bulldogs, who proved to be strong opponents, particularly at San Miguel. Although we came away with just the one point we played well, as well as the drawn rink we lost two by just one and two shots. Meanwhile the Rangers were at home to Emerald Isle Roundheads and took 2 rinks, lost one by just 2 shots and won the overall shots, a worthy result. In the Afternoon the Broncos played host to San Miguel Boxers and played very well to win 2 rinks and draw two others, also taking the overall shots by an appreciable margin. Graham Day, Sheila Cox and Mike Cox 39-12. Steve Ziepe, Pam Harris and Brian Harris 14-14. Peter Blackburn, Suzette Ziepe and Rob Clark 12-18. Barbara Jones, Jan Bright and Geoff Jones 24-12. Monday the 19th our home match against Monte Mar Torreadors was cancelled due to bad weather. This match has been re-scheduled for Tuesday 27 November. On Friday 23rd we were away to La Siesta Golds but unfortunately we were unable to keep up our great result of the previous week.  Two of the rinks were quite close in shots and one of the rinks didn’t actually tell the true story of the match.  Horadada played well but La Siesta was better with any of the’ luck’ going to them.  We won on two rinks and lost on three giving us 4 points to La Siesta’s 8.  The overall shots went to La Siesta.  70 for and 98 against.  Our winning rinks were: Carol Linehan, David Allen and Sheila Westwood 21 – 9, Tracey Paffett, Wayne Jackson and Terry Hucknall 19 – 15 The weather was kind to us and the rain of earlier stayed away.  A good, friendly atmosphere was enjoyed by all. Come on Team Horadada, keep ‘em bowls a rollin’! Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment.  Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.  Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659 139 129 for more information. La Marina Report by Barry Latham This is a good ending for last week as this week hasn’t started yet because of all the rain and floods. Southern League Div A the Ospreys at home against La Siesta Blues and we had a good win by eight to four. Pete Parsons, Wendy Latham and the Anne Stone won 20 – 11 while Alex Whyte, Jim Reeves and Kathy Manning comfortably beat the opposition 27 – 16.  Not to be outdone Shirley Hadaway, Phil Pape and Margaret McLaughlin won by four shots.  In Southern League Div C the Merlins chopped down the Greenland Elms by 8 points which pushes the Merlins up into fourth place.  John Rae with that Dave McGaw and the ever ready Reg Jackson secured a 30 – 14 win.  Top rink. John Morgan, Mike Lowe and Dave Taylor came away with a 26 -14 win and Barry Sadler, Paul Tregoing and Alan Wilcock also won with a score of 19 – 16..  The one and only Dave O’Sullivan coasted to a 18 – 8 win with help from Garth Slater and Desna Lowe.  Rain stopped play on Monday in most places, floods or leaks everywhere.  I was at hospital in the canteen where they were using saucers to catch the water dripping through the roof.  For the Winter League we travelled up to Benitachell and got thumped 10 – 2 but it wasn’t for the want of trying.  It could have been easily 10 – 6 to them but for my pet moan and groan……the last three ends.  Our only winning rink was the Old Man’s rink of Terry Perchard, Jean Perchard, Barbara Forshaw and Mo Kidd.  I sat and watched the game and was well entertained by Marilyn and Lorita.  I shall be able to knit and sew at the next game. We often say that the best part of Winter League is the meal and camaraderie afterwards and it certainly was.  Friday in the Southern League the Merlins were at home to the Vistabella Swingers and it turned out a good result for the home team 9 – 3.  Mr Withers took his rink to a 24 – 12 win so well done to Arthur Cronk and Marilyn Fryatt.  John Rae is keeping up his great form  with his other two of Dave McGaw and Reg Jackson winning 22 – 15.  Still unbeaten.  Dave Hadaway, Paul Tregoing and Trevor Hancock also won with a 19 – 12 score. La Siesta Bowls Club By Rod Edgerton A washout on Monday in the Voyager Division and Enterprise Divisions due to overnight storms will give all club representatives the difficulty in rearranging matches in the days to come. Our Winter League team entertained Emerald Isle and liitle change from results recently with the only winning rink coming from Doug and Fay Beattie with Bill and Sue Jordan winning 18 shots to 10.The overall shots for the match went to Emerald Isle114 shots to 60. The winning rinks for the Golds came from Fay Beattie, Norman Adcroft and Val Dalton winning 30 shots to 12 whilst wins also were provided by Gordon Dall,Tony Campbell and Rab Logan winning 27 shots to 6 and Barbara Cooper, Irene and Dave Laverick won 17 shots to 12. The Silvers in the C Division were visited by Greenlands Cedars in an excellent match won by the visitors by 91 shots to 77. The  two winning rinks for the Silvers came from Dot Kocsis with Rod Edgerton and Alan Ralph winning 22 shots to 14 whilst Kathleen and Noel Morrisoe with Shiela Millward winning 19 shots to 14. All of QBC’s matches in the South Alicante League were cancelled and have been rescheduled to a later date. Meanwhile the Winter league players had a bye. They currently have 58 points - only 8 points behind the leaders with a game in hand, so everything to play for next week. In the Southern League the Swifts enjoyed a competitive match against MonteMar Toreadors. Another fine 8-4 victory for them this week with 97-71 shots, which maintains their position near the top of the League Division B. And in the same division, Quesada Swans were away to San Luis Leopards and also secured an 8-4 win, with shots 95 to 81. Short and sweet report this week, but plenty to play for and report next week, as players catch up with rescheduled matches. San Miguel Bowls Club – By Gail Willshire A shorter report this week as only one match was played on 19th across the whole of the South Alicante league – Beagles away to Monte Mar Matadors. With just a few drops of rain in Gran Alicant, the Beagles excelled to win 11 points to 1, 111 shots to 54.  While all teams did well, the best rink, with an impressive score of 33:4, once again belonged to Margaret Patterson, John Raby & Stuart Denholm. The Winter League team played 2 games this week. The usual Wednesday game saw them go up north to El Cid. They came away with a just 4 points, 77 shots to 87 but the result does not tell the entire story with two rinks losing thanks to the opposition’s last bowls. The 2 winning teams were Ian Robertson, Brian Allen, Val Hignett & Lin Miller, 18:14, and Allan Patterson, Bob Graham, Johnny Raby & Carol Broomfield, 19:15. The team then played again on Thursday afternoon, home to Quesada. The squad certainly seemed to enjoy this, as the result was a great win, 10:2, with the losing team missing out by just 1 shot. The best rink this time belonged to Noel Davis, David Johnson, Gail Willshire & Fred Willshire, 26:11. On Friday, the Bulldogs greeted the El Rancho Mustangs and gave them a bit of a mauling, 11:1 and 109 shots to 76. The top trio was Meg Brownlee, Reg Cooper & Lynn Greenland who had a great win 26:9. The Boxers, unfortunately couldn’t match this result, away at El Rancho, facing the Broncos. With a win from Margaret Mackney, Frank Scotthern & Jack Jackson, 18:12, and two draws, the team came away with 4 points, 71 shots to 104. A reminder that the Wasps sessions take place Wednesdays 1:30 for 2:00 - €5 for an afternoon’s bowling with shoes and woods available to borrow. Due to the popularity of the Wasps, first time bowlers are now asked to attend an initial coaching session on Tuesday afternoons, starting at 1:45. Survivors of Sexual Assault Still Don’t Report It, Says Harvard Research Review
Most people who experience unwanted sexual contact do not report it–for reasons such as the victim does not view the encounter as ‘rape,’ even when it fits the legal definition– according to a new report for students, journalists and researchers by the Journalist’s Resource at Harvard University.
“Over the past year, as the #MeToo movement has grown and national figures such as Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and movie mogul Harvey Weinstein have faced allegations of sexual misconduct from women they knew years ago, one question has continued to surface: Why would someone claiming abuse wait so long to come forward?” author Denise-Marie Ordway writes.
Research indicates the answer is complicated, she continues.
“There are a wide range of reasons people don’t report their experiences with sexual harassment and assault to authorities and, oftentimes, even hide them from friends and family members.”
One reason is self-blame, said Karen G. Weiss, an associate professor of sociology at West Virginia University whose research focuses on sexual violence, the roundup report notes.
Another reason: Many people who have been raped don’t recognize it as rape, even when it fits the legal definition, a finding revealed in a review of 28 academic studies, said the study.
The report gathered and summarized a sampling of peer-reviewed research — including two academic articles from Weiss — that investigates why many people don’t report sex crimes.
The following list includes studies that look at factors that discourage or prevent reporting among specific groups, including teenagers, college students, prison inmates and women serving in the military.
“Meta-Analysis of the Prevalence of Unacknowledged Rape” Wilson, Laura C.; Miller, Katherine E. Trauma, Violence, & Abuse, April 2016.
Laura C. Wilson, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Mary Washington, led this review of 28 academic studies to estimate how often women who’ve been sexually assaulted do not label their experience as rape.  The 28 studies focused on the experiences of a total of 5,917 women who had been raped at some point in their lives after age 14.
Across the studies, the researchers find that 60.4 percent of women, on average, did not recognize their experience as rape even though it fit the definition — an unwanted sexual experience obtained through force or the threat of force or a sexual experience they did not consent to because they were incapacitated.
“This finding has important implications because it suggests that our awareness of the scope of the problem may underestimate its true occurrence rate, depending on the type of measurement,” the authors write.
“This impacts policy reform, allocations of mental health services, survivors’ perceptions of their experiences, and society’s attitudes toward survivors.”
“’You Just Don’t Report That Kind of Stuff’: Investigating Teens’ Ambivalence Toward Peer-Perpetrated, Unwanted Sexual Incidents” Weiss, Karen G. Violence and Victims, 2013.
In this study, Weiss investigates why many teenagers who experience unwanted sexual contact from other teens trivialize those experiences as unimportant or normal. She relies on data from the National Crime Victimization Survey, administered each year to tens of thousands of individuals aged 12 years and older.
According to survey data, 92 percent of teens who say they experienced some form of unwanted sexual contact are girls, 81 percent are white and 13 percent are Hispanic.
Just over half of these incidents — 53 percent — involved sexual coercion such as rape and attempted rape while 47 percent involved other contact such as groping. Almost half of teenagers — 44 percent — said the perpetrators were other youth between the ages of 12 and 17.
A key finding: Teens who experience unwanted contact rarely report it. Five percent of incidents were reported to police and 25 percent were reported to other authorities such as school officials or employers.
“Too Ashamed to Report: Deconstructing the Shame of Sexual Victimization” Weiss, Karen G. Feminist Criminology, July 2010.
In another study from Weiss, she “deconstructs shame as both a culturally imbued response to sexual victimization and as a much taken-for-granted reason for why victims don’t report incidents to the police.”
Weiss analyzed statements made by men and women as part of the annual National Crime Victimization Survey. She examined their responses to a survey question asking them to describe what happened to them. She also examined structured responses to questions about sex-related incidents.
What Weiss found was that many respondents expressed shame as part of their description of what happened and why they didn’t go to the police. Thirteen percent of incidents made some reference to shame. For example, a 19-year-old women stated that she was ashamed and felt partly to blame for a male acquaintance raping her because she couldn’t stop him.
“Barriers to Reporting Sexual Assault for Women and Men: Perspectives of College Students” Sable, Marjorie R.; Danis, Fran; Mauzy, Denise L.; Gallagher, Sarah K. Journal of American College Health, 2006.
For this study, a research team from the University of Missouri-Columbia surveyed students at a large, Midwestern university to better understand what they perceive as the biggest barriers to reporting rape and sexual assault for men and women.
Students rated “shame, guilt and embarrassment,” “confidentiality concerns” and “fear of not being believed” as the top three perceived barriers to reporting rape among both men and women. However, students rated shame, guilt and embarrassment as a much larger barrier for men than women. Another major barrier to reporting for men, according to students, is the fear they could be judged as being gay.
“Compared with women, men may fail to report because reporting is perceived to jeopardize their masculine self-identity,” the authors write.
“The high score that being judged as gay received by the respondents may acknowledge society’s consideration that male rape occurs in the gay, not the general, community.”
“Reporting Sexual Assault in the Military: Who Reports and Why Most Servicewomen Don’t” Mengeling, Michelle A.; Booth, Brenda M.; Torner, James C.; Sadler, Anne G. American Journal of Preventive Medicine, July 2014.
For this study, researchers interviewed women who had served in the U.S. Army or Air Force and acknowledged at least one attempted or completed sexual assault while they were in the military. Of the 1,339 women interviewed, 18 percent said they had experienced sexual assault while serving on full-time active duty.
Meanwhile, 12 percent said they had experienced sexual assault while serving in the Reserves or National Guard.
Among the key findings: Three-fourths of servicewomen did not report their assaults. Eighty percent of women who said they’d been assaulted identified the perpetrator as U.S. military personnel.
The researchers found that sexual assaults were more likely to be reported if they occurred on base or while on duty or if they resulted in a physical injury.
They also found that enlisted women who had never gone to college were most likely to report. The most common reasons women gave for not officially reporting their assault were embarrassment and not knowing how to report.
“The Darkest Figure of Crime: Perceptions of Reasons for Male Inmates to Not Report Sexual Assault” Miller, Kristine Levan. Justice Quartely, 2010.
Kristine Levan, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Idaho, surveyed a random sample of 890 inmates from eight state-run prisons in Texas to understand why a male prisoner might not report sexual assault.
Inmates said the three most common reasons prisoners may not report sexual assault are embarrassment, retaliation from other inmates and a fear of harassment and abuse from other inmates.
“The male prison environment thrives on exerting one’s own masculinity,” Levan writes.
“Although the assailant of a sexual assault gains respect and status, the victim is ultimately emasculated … Heralding back to the tenets of the convict code, inmates are expected to not show signs of weakness, especially to other inmates, and admission to sexual victimization may be an indication to other inmates that they are indeed weak.”
“Would They Officially Report an In-Prison Sexual Assault? An Examination of Inmate Perceptions” Fowler, Shannon K.; Blackburn, Ashley G.; Marquart, James W.; Mullings, Janet L. The Prison Journal, 2010.
A research team led by Shannon K. Fowler, an associate professor at the University of Houston, examines whether prisoners would report sexual violence or recommend that other prisoners report violence they had experienced. The team surveyed 935 male and female inmates from a large Southern prison system.
Here’s what they found: Most inmates said they would report their sexual assault. However, those who already had experienced assault while incarcerated were less likely to say they would. “
This finding tends to support the bulk of work dedicated to prison culture and sexual assault, where inmate reports to staff could add additional consequences, like retaliation or additional labels of being ‘weak,’ which could lead to increased harassment by other inmates,” the authors write.
Other resources that may be helpful to journalists and researchers:
The National Sexual Violence Resource Center is a leading source of data and information about sexual violence. RAINN, or the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, is an anti-sexual violence organization that operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline.
The Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 requires states to implement a zero-tolerance policy for sexual assault within correctional facilities. It also requires the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) to track and analyze the incidence of prison rape annually. The BJS provides a variety of related reports on its website.
A full copy of the report by the Journalist’s Resource at Harvard University can be found here.
Megan Hadley is associated editor of The Crime Report. Readers’ comments are welcome.
