Unlike my more bread and butter topics of rock music, rap is more lyrical focused, and what we get here is a nice blend of very bold, but artistically inclined poems that goes into subjects such as crimes, drugs, sex, and a great amount of crass subjects that wouldn’t quite fly on public radio, but Dr. Dre and his collaborators do it in a way that it all flows greatly in my ears, and what flows really allowed me to really appreciate this record.

I think the album’s biggest strong suit has to be Snoop Dogg’s performance. His flow on this entire album, especially on Fuck Wit Dre Day and Nuthin’ But A “G” Thang, really adds to not only the themes it expresses, but also Dr. Dre’s own flows in my opinion. To me, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre are like a toast and jam duo, with Snoop Dogg being the jam, very smooth and free flowing vocals, with Dr. Dre being the toast, quite more bold and heavier in what he delivers, but still very good to hear. I think what these two have done here is quite amazing, not only from a musical standpoint, but from an artistic standpoint as well.

If I had one critique with this album, it is the fact I feel like it is quite top heavy. I feel like after Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat the album starts to lose interest for me. While not any of the songs afterwards are bad, I feel like it never quite held my attention unlike with Let Me Ride or Deeez Nuuuts. I think this is still a stellar hip hop album in its own right, but I fully believe that it starts to dip in satisfaction after a bit.

This is a really great rap record that I think anyone looking to get into hip hop should really consider. It is a very clear and vibrant record that paints a picture of the west coast hip hop scene and g-funk, creating this almost masterpiece status work from Dr. Dre and his fellow death row inmates. A vibrant collection of gangsta rap slices of life that I really love.
