How many days did you manage to relax during the holidays?

A.Z: From the 31st of December to the 2nd of January. On the 3rd we were already training.

How important is the New Year for you?

A.Z:It is very important! I usually spend it with my family and friends. We host a big party, with about 80 people. They all bring a little bit of food and we have a good time.

An another important celebration is May 9th. And also the birthdays of my children. We try to spend all of them together, but sometimes it doesn’t work out so we have to push the dates of the parties to accommodate my schedule. 

Do they get offended when you miss their birthdays?

A.Z: No, thank God! They don’t. 

How successful was 2018 for you?

A.Z: Professionally speaking, it was very successful. Daria Trubnikova won the Youth Olympic Games and also the European Championships. Also, my family is healthy and this is very important.

Do you make wishes about professional achievements for the New Year?

A.Z: No, only wishes related to my family. Medals can only be achieved through the hard work of my athletes.

The 21st century has very high demands for women. They must have a good career, a nice family, children, cook well... This is not easy for an ordinary woman, but for a top-level coach how hard is it to rise to the standards?

A.Z: I am not a good cook and my family understands. Recently, we had no nanny for 2 days. The children were excited because they were allowed to order from their favourite restaurants. But the next day when I had to make breakfast, it was a disaster! I couldn’t boil an egg! The children kept asking were the nanny was to cook their breakfast.

Your husband must be very understanding.

A.Z: Yes, he is. He never told me “You have to give up gymnastics and take your place near the stove!”. He knows gymnastics is very important.

In Figure Skating, moms usually are very involved in their daughter’s careers. Is this the case in RG?

A.Z: We collaborate with the mothers, but there are boundaries. If a mom doesn’t understand this and tries to interfere with the coach, I stop collaborating with the girl. Usually, the girls have no fault in this and they want me back, but I don’t accept them again. 

With the moms that are helping me coach and understand the coaching method, I keep in touch. One such example is Rita Mamun’s mom. Recently we went to dinner together, talked about her trip to Georgia.

It is also a bad thing when gymnasts part on bad terms with their coaches. It is a shame when they have to lower their eyes in shame when they meet their old coach at competitions. I was taught that we always must be grateful to our first coaches.

Is it difficult to deal with girls during puberty?

A.Z: It is, because the girls spend more time with us than with their mothers. For example, Yana Lukonina wanted everything during that time: boys, restaurant, discos. We couldn’t find a common language with her, and there were scandals. With today’s girls, fortunately, it isn’t the case.

How strictly do you follow their weight?

A.Z: Girls have to understand that they cannot gain weight for their own good. I do think that from time to time, some cake cannot hurt them. I often indulge myself after a long competition and I allow them to have some, too.

During the Winter Olympic Games, everyone watched the rivalry between Evgenia Medvedeva and Alina Zagitova and many recalled Rita and Yana. Was it difficult to maintain such a friendship during the Olympic Games?

A.Z: Telling Rita to go and tear Yana was equal to suicide. Rita is a gentle soul and this approach would never have worked with her. They are also very different: Yana more of a strategist, Rita a non-conflict kind of person.

Would it have been possible for them to keep their friendship, had they been coached by the same person?

A.Z: No, absolutely not. This is one of the reasons why I never coach 2 senior gymnasts. I always have one Junior and one Senior to train.

You said that Rita was a non-conflict type of person, while champions are very goal-oriented and would do anything for the gold.

A.Z: I always told Rita that she is not a true athlete because she doesn’t have that rage in her. She was very calm, never stomped her foot or got mad in the training hall. She only cried at home, with her head in the pillow. 

Famous figure skating coach Rafael Harutyunyan once said to his wards:“ I don’t like any of you, but I will love the one who will train well ”. From what I read in your interviews, I saw a completely different approach ...

A.Z:If I don’t love those girls, then who will? They are away from their mothers all the time, so it has to be me. During training, I raise my voice, I swear, they understand that I am the first in this hierarchy, but at the same time we are partners. Without mutual sympathy, love and mutual respect it is impossible to build fruitful work.

Your children are not jealous?

A.Z: No, girls sometimes stay with me overnight. We always have a spare mattress and a pillow with a blanket for such cases. Daria Trubnikova stayed with me and my family during a 10 days vacation. She lived with us in the hotel and was like another one of my children. I was treated the same by Irina Viner, who raised me from childhood.
