Created at the Treaty of Versailles (that unmitigated disaster of an agreement....), the Free City of Danzig was a semi-autonomous city-state somewhat in the style of the old timey city-states common throughout Europe - although in this case nominally administered by the League of Nations in order to give Poland a route to the sea (despite the city of Danzig being something like 98% German), without actually giving Danzig (or Gdańsk as it was and is known in Polish) to Poland. Long a part of the Polish Empire, the loss of Gdańsk to the Prussians/Germans/League of Nations smarted mightily, and Poland did everything in its power to circumvent the need to use the Free City of Danzig as a port. Danzig was reoccupied and subsumed into Nazi Germany in 1939, bad things happened to all the non-German inhabitants, and after the war the German inhabitants were duly expelled and Gdańsk returned to Poland.
