Tumblr media
· Xu hướng Rap bắt đầu phát triển
Ở quận Bronx, tiểu bang New York, làn sóng yêu thích Hip hop không dừng lại.
The Notorious B.I.G.
Tumblr media
· Notorious B.I.G
Tumblr media
· Kanye West
Tumblr media

Ghosts of Professions Past...
Many moons ago, when I was much younger, more naive, and eager to find a way to make a buck or two without doing too much work, I discovered the world of Radio Broadcasting. “Discovered” might not be the most accurate description of how I was introduced to Radio. Stumbling drunk into the campus radio station with a fraternity brother is more to the truth. Here’s the backstory...
Music was a big part of my life growing up. It was always on in the house, the garage, the car...wherever we were. The radio was our main source when it came to music. Listening to the songs, hearing my dad croon along with Dean Martin or Bing Crosby...memories were made of this. Yet it wasn’t only the music that got my attention. Over the years I listened to many disc jockeys in the Quad Cities (Davenport, Iowa being my home town) and enjoyed their banter, the information they provided about the songs, the call-in contests, and the whole three-ring circus called Radio!
Once in college, I had planned on becoming a music teacher and was enrolled as a Music Education major. I was part of the marching band, playing tenor saxophone. For some reason, they stuck me in a line with the sousaphones (you know..marching tubas that look like albino boa constrictors wrapped around the musician). Well, my silver tenor sax stuck out like a sore thumb, so I naturally switched to sousaphone. Mind you, switching from sax to tuba is like driving a moped, then being given the keys to an 18-wheeler! But it was a challenge, and a fun one at that. I met several guys who invited me to pledge their frat, Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity. Originally I had planned to pledge Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, which is the fraternity for “serious” musicians, but the Kappas were a fun bunch and I went with them.
During those first few weeks of college life I discovered the downfall of many a noble dream... Beer. Tony’s LaPizzaria on College Hill in Cedar Falls, Iowa was the favored hangout of the Kappas, and many evenings were spent quaffing beer, eating Tony’s famous pizza bread, and singing along with the jukebox. After one such night I was invited by a frat brother to stop by the campus radio station where he worked. It was there the Muse hit me. Music...buttons...microphones...albums galore... I was hooked. Changed my major the next afternoon (after sleeping off the hangover) from Music Education to Communications with an emphasis on Radio/TV. Needless to say, my dad wasn’t terribly thrilled with my move, and probably is still peeved to this day...and he passed away 23 years ago!
That fateful night began my career in Radio. I got my first real radio gig in Rock Island, IL at WHBF (Country Sunshine) as “Jay Thomas,” then moved across the Mississippi River to my hometown of Davenport, IA to work for the mighty KIIK 104, using my real name, but gaining the nickname, “the Weekend Wombat,” and eventually settling in as the overnight DJ. After a few years it was time to spread my wings and move on, landing a gig at KFDC Country in the small market of Fort Dodge in what was deemed “Central North Central Iowa.” I re-named myself “Jay Bird” and settled in for the ride. In a very short time I went from afternoon jock to morning jock/Program Director/Music Director/Production Director/Anything-That-Needed-Done Director. Huge jump for an overnight guy! Many calls were placed to my former boss, Jim O’Hara at KIIK 104, for advice...and this was when long distance calls cost you a bunch!
Fort Dodge was a nice enough place, but the station was run more like a bar than a radio station. Most of the advertising was done in trade, and several of our advertisers were bars. After a few years of that it was time to leave. Besides...my liver couldn’t handle many more station events! I went back to Davenport and worked a few months at KUUL (formerly KIIK) and WOC before making a leap of faith by moving to Denver, Colorado. Got hired on as a night/weekend jock at KHOW playing Denver’s soft rock favorites as “Jay Harrison.” The station soon switched formats to news/talk, and I survived the purge by having news experience. Worked as a reporter/features editor for a while, then went across town to the competition, KOA, to be a news reporter/writer/editor. After a year at KOA my then-wife informed me her job was transferring her to Indianapolis. Goodbye Colorado...hello Indiana.
I latched on to oldies station WGLD in Indianapolis under the name “Jay Hawk.” Had a lot of fun there, but after a few years my then-wife again informed me we were moving. Back to Colorado. I got a gig at Jones Radio Network, which is/was a satellite operation providing music and DJs for stations across the country. National syndication if you will. I worked double shifts, mostly as “Jay Hawk” on their U.S. Country format and as “Tom Taylor” on their Good Time Oldies format. Pulled a few guest shifts on other formats as “Thor Ravenswood,” but those were few and far between.
By this time my marriage was crumbling apart. Separation and divorce soon followed, and I gave her just about everything except my radio headphones in the divorce. One nervous breakdown later I found myself back at KUUL/WOC in Davenport, IA working for my old boss Jim O’Hara. Great guy. Hired me three times in 17 years! But it didn’t last, as my ex-wife decided she was going to move to Oregon. If I wanted to remain a part of my sons’ lives I had to move to the Pacific Northwest. Landed a job at KUIK news/talk in Hillsboro, OR as a producer, then got a gig doing overnights for KUPL Country. After 4 years of overnights and filling in on the morning show I went back to KUIK and being a talk show producer. I “retired” in 2015 when health issues prevented me from working.
So here it is, 2019, and still to this day I get people constantly saying things like, “Wow, you’ve got a voice for radio! Ever thought of being a DJ?” And sometimes when a clerk or restaurant server sees the name on my credit card, they ask, “Weren’t you a DJ at (insert station call letters here)?” Recently, a pharmacist whom we’ve been using for a few years put two and two together and said, “Didn’t you used to be Jay Hawk?” I smiled, lowered my chin to my chest, heaved a deep sigh, and replied, “I’m STILL Jay Hawk.” Rapid apologies from the pharmacist, “Oh, I didn’t mean you aren’t Jay Hawk, but you’re just not THAT Jay Hawk anymore...OK I’ll just shut up now...”
While it does bother me that a lot of good radio people are out of jobs because technology has made radio operations cheaper by voice-tracking and syndication, I don’t regret my time in the business. Well, maybe there was a two-month stretch in Fort Dodge where I wasn’t the happiest camper in the park...but overall it’s been a fun ride. Do I want back in the business? Not really. It’s changed too much for my tastes. DJs are no longer, for the most part, allowed to be themselves. They have to follow a script, say the right words, don’t deviate from the content provided by the corporate offices in some big city. It’s discouraging to witness, but it’s out of my hands.
The best part is when someone recognizes my voice or stops me on the street, saying, “I used to listen to you on (insert station call letters here) years ago and remember when you said (something halfway funny or clever).” That always makes me smile. The fact that I made a person smile or laugh, and that they remember it 10, 20, or 30 years after the fact. That’s a legacy I can live with and a Ghost of Professions Past I’ll gladly choose to be haunted by.

Episode 133 : The Struggle Continues
"Why you think Bobby and Huey P were heat holding?"
- Toki Wright
It's been a very up and down month, which I imagine isn't at all a unique experience. This episode reflects some of that, marking the eleventh birthday of the podcast while also recognising the incredible Black Lives Matter street protests that have been taking place over the last few weeks. The selection takes that as the main theme, and I think it's a solid mix that you'll enjoy - and one where almost everyone will learn one new track at least.
By the way, today would be a good day to arrest the murderers who killed Breonna Taylor.
Twitter : @airadam13
Twitch : @airadam13
Playlist/Notes
Cappadonna : Splish Splash
I'd been thinking about doing that little doubles manipulation and scratch on a mixtape for about twenty years - no exaggeration! Cappadonna blew everyone away with his debut on Ghostface's "Winter Warz", and his debut LP "The Pillage" was highly anticipated by Wu fans. I think it's reasonable to say it maybe didn't live up to the outsized expectations, but there were a few standouts and for me, this was one of them. Only a short track, but Tru Master's beat is solid and Cappa knows what to do with it.
Jay Dee : Fuck The Police (Instrumental)
Love this beat, Dilla had these drums banging right through the speakers. This 2001 single-only release is a classic in Dilla's catalogue, written after suffering one of many incidents of police harassment in his hometown of Detroit. It was slated for the long-shelved "The Diary" album, but MCA records didn't want the heat and so it got the release as a 12" on  Up Above Records. A must-have, in my opinion!
N.W.A : Fuck Tha Police
The iconic anthem. This is the track that got a group of young (Eazy-E, at 25, was the oldest) Black men from Compton and Los Angeles onto the radar of the FBI, and into an indelible place in music history. I've only played Ice Cube's verse here, as I wanted to blend into the next cut which carries on in the same sonic vein. I figure every listener already knows this track well, or should be putting "listen to Straight Outta Compton" on their homework lists immediately!
B.Dolan ft. Toki Wright, Jasiri X, and Sage Francis : Film The Police
I only stumbled upon this one this month, and it's so perfectly fitting that there's no way it was getting left out of the selection. Just because of the length (it's around six minutes long, as is the NWA track before), I omitted Jasiri X's verse, but of course it's on the full version on the "House of Bees, Vol. 2" album. Dolan is an MC out of Rhode Island, while Toki Wright is from Minneapolis - home of the late George Floyd. This is a great re-working of "Fuck The Police" in an era-appropriate way; while almost all of us walk around with pocket video cameras today, the Rodney King tape was notable not for the violence, but the fact it was recorded.
EPMD : Give The People (Remix)
The original version of this track as heard on "Business As Usual" lifts the groove from the O'Jays "Give The People What They Want" heavily, but this version de-emphasises it and piles in enough other samples to give a lawyer a heart attack! I personally prefer this mix, which is a bit less obvious (and harder to find). Lyrically, the track is primarily about the difficulties Hip-Hop had finding acceptance in the era in which it was recorded, but with a sprinkling of the wider politics in there, and the perfect title, I thought it was a good one to go with.
The P Brothers : Across The Planet (Instrumental)
This track turned up for me while undertaking my vinyl digitisation project, and with The P Brothers, the quality is always going to be there. The veteran Nottingham crew are responsible for some of the most uncompromising material ever to emerge from these shores, and this track is no exception. The vocal version on the 12" single features Imam T.H.U.G on the mic, with a heavy Cappo track on the flip. The Akala sample I laid over the top came from his brilliant two-part IG Live session which you can find here and here.
Above The Law : Freedom Of Speech
The 1990 "Livin' Like Hustlers" LP is arguably one of the greatest "gangsta" albums of the era, and some of that was because they comfortably covered different topics and sounds without it ever sounding forced. Uptempo here - by modern standards - Cold 187um and KMG (RIP) ride a classic Myra Barnes sample (it's out there, I'm not snitching) and talk about the atmosphere of censorship that was around Hip-Hop, as well as the role of parents. Definitely check the album if you don't already know it.
Saigon : Shok TV
Dug this DJ Shok-produced cut out from its place on "The Best of Saigon, Pt. 2" to take a position in this month's selection, "Hill Street Blues" sample and all! Saigon has always had a social/political streak in his content, coming from a very street perspective, which I think comes across in this very short track. A 2003 recording, this preceded his long-awaited debut LP by eight years - when you listen to both, you can hear how he refined his style without drastically changing it.
Apple Juice Kid : Protest
A fitting pick from an album about a very different revolution, in Egypt in 2011 - seems an age ago already. The "Beats of a Revolution" album is still available on Bandcamp, and as a free download you really can't go wrong.
Anderson .Paak : Lockdown
Big new single that captures so much of what's been going on this year. The Black Lives Matter protests and the violent reply of the state would have been incredibly significant on their own, but at the same time as the coronavirus pandemic...your grandchildren will be asking you about what it was like to survive these times. This timely track is one where it's worth seeing the video as well.
Mobb Deep : U.S.A. (Aiight Then)
It's been three years since Prodigy passed so I totally wanted to drop one of his records here - my first thought was "Real Power Is People", but in the end this quasi-unity track from "Murda Muzik" was a better sonic fit. It's actually got a little bit of a club feel to it without pandering, and was definitely a welcome inclusion on the LP. This was also a single release with "Spread Love" on the flip, which is pretty much the other end of the goodwill spectrum, don't be fooled by the title...
Sampa The Great : Final Form
"The Return" is a wicked album with an array of styles, but this was the first track many would have heard - Sampa stamping her authority on a beat based around the same break as Ghostface's "Be Easy". Silentjay is on production, taking that sample as a base but building out from there, and Sampa gets very busy with it.
X-Vandals : A Poem For Black Boys
I happened across the "The War of Art" album when I got it from one of the crew in Spanish Harlem at a Tools of War park jam a good few years back! It's taken me a while to find just the right spot for one of their tracks, but this is perfect. The production is courtesy of Johnny "Juice" Rosado (who did scratches for Public Enemy for many years), and the bulk of the vocal is a sample he laid in - the voice and words of the poet Nikki Giovanni, with a dark and sardonic poem of resistance.
Ta'Raach : Yeah! (Instrumental)
It's been a long, long time since I played the vocal version on the show, so I think it's fair enough to drop Ta'Raach's ill instrumental here! If you see a copy of the 12", definitely pick it up.
Public Enemy : State Of The Union (STFU)
Unless I'm very much mistaken, this new single is the first beat DJ Premier has ever done for Public Enemy - two iconic forces combining at last! It should be obvious for anyone who knows about PE at all that conscious and rebel music has been their lane from the very start, and so this is very much in keeping with their long and storied history. Chuck D may be very much an elder statesman but that voice and that message are as raw as ever! You don't need to go to the usual download sites to get this one - go straight to the Public Enemy website for the real.
Waajeed ft. Tiombe Lockhart : The Overtaking
Detroit comes to the selection a second time (after Ta'Raach) with the ominous opening track from the excellent "The War LP". It grinds along with almost a slow dark metal vibe, and Tiombe Lockhart creeps in and out as the voice of the people.
DJ Vadim ft. Phi-Life Cypher : Ghetto Rebels
I had completely forgotten about this one, and I don't know how, because this is killer. The basslines (there are several, at different points) will have your system under pressure, then Phi-Life just drown you in a lyrical tidal wave. It's unusual to hear Hip-Hop coming from a Rasta perspective, but you can definitely hear it in their words. DJ Vadim's "U.S.S.R. The Art of Listening" features some very serious production, and is available used for a very reasonable price either as a download or on the used market on CD.
Gang Starr : Riot Akt
Tucked away on the back half of "The Ownerz", the last Gang Starr LP to be released during Guru's lifetime, we find this dose of reality. Guru's message of focusing on the real threats and drawing together to protect the community may have been written in 2003, but is 100% on the nose right now. Everything down to the militarised police, tear gas, and corruption are the things that have been the case for years, but in the last few months we've seen them in HD and on social media.
Enes Suleman : Lo Quiero Todo (Instrumental)
From the instrumental version of the "StreetSoul", the Spanish producer out of France comes with a banging beat - check the original LP release to hear it with the featured MC Drako on the track.
The Impressions : We're A Winner
An uplifting, motivational song to close the month, and one which was an anthem of the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. This pre-dates tracks like James Brown's "Say It Loud", and was a trailblazer in being as straightforward a statement of Black pride and the righteousness of the struggle as it is. Curtis Mayfield, the frontman of The Impressions, wrote this track after the concept came to him in a dream. When it came time to record, the group  brought a live audience into the studio to give it extra flavour - I think you'll agree, it really adds something. This was a big single that was also the title track to the first of two 1968 albums by The Impressions, and deserves to be heard in full here.
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!
Check out this episode!

The obscure bargains in tricky fantasy baseball closers market
Drafting a closer/reliever is like going to Best Buy to purchase a DVD for your collection (yes, we’ve heard about that whole streaming thing, but play along): You have to know where to look in the store for the best deals.
Being that this is a position that constantly changes throughout the season, you have to make sure you spend your money wisely.
When you walk into the store, the first thing you’ll see are the new releases — movies you rush out to get because you will likely watch them over and over again. Those flicks are like the top-end closers — Milwaukee’s Josh Hader, the Yankees’ Aroldis Chapman, Houston’s Roberto Osuna, San Diego’s Kirby Yates or Oakland’s Liam Hendriks — but they’re going to cost you, and it’s not always worth the price.
For example, Hader has the highest average draft position of all relievers (63.84), according to Fantasy Alarm, which means you’d be selecting him over valuable position players like DJ LeMahieu, Matt Olson, Eloy Jimenez, Bo Bichette and Paul Goldschmidt, or starters like Noah Syndergaard and Mike Soroka.
As you look on the lower shelves, you’ll find older titles you’ve seen hundreds of times, like “Jaws” or “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” This is the equivalent of oft-injured Blue Jays closer Ken Giles (135.34), the Dodgers’ slowly-declining ninth-inning man Kenley Jansen (120.47) or Cleveland’s Brad Hand (115.24). They’re classics, but still may cost more than you’re willing to spend.
Taylor Rogers and Edwin DiazGetty Images
For the best deals, you’re going have to search the bargain bin.
You won’t have to dig too deep to find Minnesota’s Taylor Rogers (122.85), one of Roto Rage’s top relief targets this season. Not only does Rogers have a mid-90s fastball, the lefty also collected 30 saves in 36 chances, a career-low ERA (2.61) and recorded a career-high 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings.
You can also find the Mets’ Edwin Diaz (129.41), a Roto Rage bounce-back favorite, who is just one year removed from recording 57 saves with a 1.96 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 73 ¹/₃ innings.
As you continue to sift through that upper layer, you’ll come across solid titles for your collection, like “Mrs. Doubtfire,” or “My Cousin Vinny.” This is where you’ll find the likes of the White Sox’s Alex Colome (162.74), who may not be the sexiest name in the stack, but has a 2.78 ERA and 126 saves since 2016 (including 30 last year). Others you’ll find here: Boston’s Brandon Workman (170.07), Philadelphia’s Hector Neris (152.96) and Arizona’s Archie Bradley (184.06), who recorded all 18 of his saves, a 1.71 ERA and .191 opponent average in the second half of 2019.
Just hanging out in the middle of the bin are “Weekend at Bernie’s,” and “Grandma’s Boy,” which are fun to watch, but many will question your judgement for owning them. This is where you’ll find the Angels’ Hansel Robles (182.05), the Rangers’ Jose Leclerc (186.27) and Kansas City’s Ian Kennedy (208.73), who all but resuscitated his career by moving to the bullpen and collecting 30 saves.
There also may be some highly acclaimed foreign films worth giving a try just because they’re cheap and you have the opportunity. This is where someone like St. Louis’ Giovanny Gallegos (224.90), who struck out 11.3 per nine with a 16.3 percent swinging strike rate and may get a shot to close as Carlos Martinez gets a shot at the rotation.
There are also combo packs (aka closer-by-committee, like Tampa Bay or Washington) for great movies that have several inferior sequels. Mark Melancon (235.69) is a great option, but listed here because of the addition of 2019 All-Star Will Smith (145.67).
If you dig really deep, almost to the bottom of the bin, you can find some some 1980’s flicks that once brought you much joy (no matter how bad they are), like the classic Hulk Hogan vehicle “No Holds Barred.” People may laugh at the fact you own them, but Detroit’s Joe Jimenez (231.12), Pittsburgh’s Keone Kela (226.03) and Colorado’s Scott Oberg (268.73) will make you smile just by seeing them in your RP spot. You can also find other relievers who may not collect a ton of saves but do rack up the stats in other categories — like Seth Lugo (296.92), A.J. Puk (240.93) or even Dellin Betances (351.9).
If your hand touches the bottom of the bin, you’re looking at the Orioles, Mariners and Giants situations. That means you’re staring at Carrot Top’s 1998 thriller “Chairman of the Board,” which means you might as well saw off your hand and leave it in the bin.

2018 Fantasy Baseball Draft Prep: 12-team Head-to-Head factors public sale outcomes
Our current 12-team Head-to-Head factors public sale ended up being far more than that.
It grew to become a research of diametrically opposed approaches and a 3rd that tried to search out center floor. And since the three house owners on the middle are those you could know from the Fantasy Baseball Immediately podcast, that makes it all of the extra enjoyable.
During the last couple years, focusing on beginning pitching early has turn out to be much less of a no-no in Fantasy Baseball, and that is very true on this format, the place there are fewer hitter spots to fill and no must stability quite a lot of classes, some scarcer than others. General manufacturing is all that issues, which significantly reduces the margin for error when choosing a hitter.
And in a power-laden surroundings the place everyone who’s anyone hits 20-plus dwelling runs, that margin for error is even smaller. How small? You might argue it is nearly nil, and I’ve theorized such. This public sale put it to the take a look at, although.
Straight away, it grew to become clear Heath Cummings and I entered with the identical technique: go laborious after the 4 tremendous aces (which, for the uninitiated, are Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, Corey Kluber and Chris Sale). When the bidding reached $40, the 2 of us went forwards and backwards, and I blinked first in every occasion, not desirous to blow out my prescribed funds. Heath wound up with three of the 4 (all however Sale). I wound up with none.
Undeterred, I made a decision to seize as most of the second-tier beginning pitchers — all aces in their very own proper — as I might, understanding I might nonetheless avoid the shortage at that place whereas additionally leaving myself with extra money to fill out the remainder of my beginning lineup. Collectively, Heath and I bought eight of the consensus high 17 beginning pitchers, giving us a giant benefit on the place the place there’s arguably the largest benefit available. It is simply that Heath’s 4 (Kershaw, Scherzer, Kluber and Justin Verlander) ate up $180 of his $260 funds whereas my 4 (Madison Bumgarner, Zack Greinke, Noah Syndergaard and Dallas Keuchel) consumed solely $124.
On the opposite facet of the coin was Chris Towers, who forsook pitching for high-end hitting, investing 75 % of his funds in Jose Altuve, Nolan Arenado, Charlie Blackmon, Gary Sanchez and Aaron Choose. He needed to go the thrifty route at beginning pitcher, and it exhibits, along with his two costliest each presenting main danger and the remainder of his employees providing little to no chance of high-end manufacturing. That is to not say Tanner Roark and Dinelson Lamet aren’t helpful or intriguing, but when they’re among the many greatest he has, his drawback is just about locked in.
I spent considerably much less on hitting than Chris, however what? I feel mine is fairly good. I nonetheless acquired top-two gamers at two of the scarcest positions, catcher and second base, and 6 hitters in all who would go off the board within the first eight rounds of any draft. My outfield is weak, nevertheless it’s aggressive sufficient.
After which there’s Heath, who left himself subsequent to nothing to spend on hitting, and as you may count on, the hitter portion of his lineup is … wait, what?
H-how did he do this?
Do not get me incorrect: It is the worst assortment of hitters among the many three groups, however extra due to draw back than upside. Each one in every of his beginning 9 belongs in a beginning 9 on this league, and solely two value him double-digit . Not a one value him as a lot as $15.
Positive, there are potential pitfalls, particularly given the age of among the hitters. However the 2018 season will not go incorrect for all of them, and the place it does go incorrect, he has loads of different locations to show. Shoot, I acquired Ryan Zimmerman and Mike Moustakas on my bench for a buck every simply because it appeared loopy no one needed them after the numbers they only put up. Nevertheless it’s not like I’ve a spot to play them. Might Heath make me a gorgeous supply if it got here to that? Yeah, he in all probability might. And I am in all probability not the one one with that type of hitter extra, a few of which (by the way in which) is bound to wind up on the waiver wire.
Backside line is it will take considerably much less for his lineup to measure as much as mine than my pitching to measure as much as his — and I say that even understanding my pitching is clearly the second greatest. And whereas Heath might have taken it a bit too far with the $15 he spent on Jon Lester, I got here away pondering I personally ought to have gone farther.
There’s simply an excessive amount of interchangeability amongst all however the highest-end hitters to shrug off the large benefits that may be gained from high-end beginning pitchers.

Fantasy football rankings 2017: Running backs in PPR leagues
Welcome to the 2017 preseason! To get you ready for your drafts, we've got updated rankings of the top 50 running backs in PPR leagues heading into Week 1 of the preseason. Check out our full 2017 fantasy football preview draft guide!
Editor's update: We updated our preseason rankings following the second week of preseason action.
With training camp in full swing and the first preseason games just days away, we here at SB Nation have reracked all of our preseason fantasy rankings. And at running back, our experts have reversed themselves on the subject of who is the No. 1 choice in point-per-reception leagues.
Around the Draft and OTAs, our pick for top PPR back was Pittsburgh’s Le’Veon Bell. But with the season drawing ever closer, it is Arizona’s David Johnson who has reclaimed the top spot in our consensus PPR rankings.
Johnson, who is the top pick in our rankings of the top 150 players overall, had always been running a close second to Bell throughout the offseason. If head coach Bruce Arians follows through on his desire to get Johnson upward of 30 touches per game, DJs PPR value goes even further through the roof. It could also render moot the fact that Bell had just five fewer receptions than Johnson last season, despite playing in four fewer games.
Johnson averaged roughly 23 touches per game last season (293 rushes, 80 receptions), so if that touches number increases by 25 percent, we could be looking at triple-digit receptions.
Bell was dominant in 2016, ranking third in rushing and fourth in overall touches from scrimmage, despite playing in just 12 games. Bell has struggled in his career to play a full schedule because of injuries and suspensions. But with a massive free agency payday looming in 2018, Bell should be motivated like never before to play all 16 games and light up the stat sheet.
Dallas’ Ezekiel Elliott, despite the possibility of a short suspension to open the season for his domestic violence allegation, ranks third on our PPR list. Johnson proved last season that there’s little to fear in sophomore slumps, even as the Cardinals struggled as a team. It will be interesting to see how the Cowboys respond to high expectations with a second-year QB and second-year RB, but as long as he’s on the field, Elliott will produce.
Another second-year player, the Chargers’ Melvin Gordon, came in fourth on our list, just edging veteran LeSean McCoy in Buffalo.
Chicago’s Jordan Howard was sixth in our offseason rankings but drops to 10th on the training camp list, with DeVonta Freeman, Jay Ajayi, Demarco Murray and Lamar Miller ranking six to nine.
Then come the rookies.
Our rankings place Jacksonville’s Leonard Fournette, Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey, and Cincinnati’s Joe Mixon as 12th, 13th and 15th in PPR leagues. All three are in tremendous spots to secure the lead back role with their teams, despite the presence of familiar veterans such as Chris Ivory, Jonathan Stewart, and Gio Bernard/Jeremy Hill.
None of those veterans is expected to stand in the way of the three rookies from earning major touches right away, and all three could be sneaky sleeper picks, especially in drafts that occur early in the preseason game schedule, if owners are concerned about their prospects for playing time.
Overall rankings, preseason Week 3

Episode 125 : The Audacity Of Dope
"In the land of the free, the slaves are still here."
- Jerry Beeks
The grind continues, and as the autumn starts to really draw in, the selection gets you prepared for full hoodie and boot season with some rugged sounds from the old to the new!
A couple of events for you...
The Flyest @ Klondyke Club, Manchester, November 15th - guest starring me on the turntables!
Artifacts ft. DJ Mr.Len @ Joshua Brooks, November 30th
Twitter : @airadam13
Playlist/Notes
Royal Flush : Life Is Hard
Royal Flush is known to most for his debut "Ghetto Millionaire" album, but he definitely has had some other solid tracks over the years. While this is on the 2019 release "The Governor", it was first heard on the 2005 "Street Boss" album. The production (don't have credits for this one) is top-notch, with the eerie and dramatic instrumental sounding very noir - a perfect backdrop for Flush's grim Queens thug braggadocio.
[Maxmillion] Panda One : Elaborate (Touch You) (Instrumental)
There's another track on this 2002 12" that has been the favourite for me for a long time, but on a re-visit this month I had to give this beat a little bit of light! The sample it's based around has been used before, but not quite like this - good job by Maxmillion.
Phi Life Cypher : Earth Rulers
One of my favourite rhyme duos with a killer single! DJ Beware put me up on this one back in the day, but I only recently got my own vinyl copy. Si Phili and Life just firehose lyrics right down the DJ Nappa-produced track, in a way any fan of bars has to appreciate. The finishing touches are provided by the dancehall samples, which I think come from recordings of the veteran Earth Ruler sound system - the little one-bar sample that drops in in place of a hook is absolute fire!
Redlight Boogie ft. DJ Chainsaw : Hands Down
Amsterdam's Redlight Boogie yells, snarls, and spits his way through this cut from the "Dirty Money, Clean Hands" album - abrasive like a sack of Brillo pads. DJ Chainsaw drops in for some cuts at the close, which end up blending over the scratches from...
Gang Starr : Bad Name
Huge new single which the heavy Hip-Hop listeners will surely have had on repeat the last few weeks! Easily the biggest musical surprise of the last few years has been the news that a new Gang Starr album release is imminent, and that there have been unreleased Guru vocals in the vault all these years. The "Family & Loyalty" single stunned everyone, and this follow-up will keep the buzz going until the LP drops. DJ Premier on production, the late great Guru on the mic - it's what we've been missing.
Bronx Slang : More Grief
It's been great to see Bronx Slang getting momentum up this year off the back of their excellent debut album, and it just so happens that this track that I was planning to play anyway turns out to be their new single! Jerry Beeks gets busy on the mic with the kind of consciousness that a lot of people swear doesn't exist in music these days, while Jadell packs in the funk to complete the soulful stew. Don't sleep!
Jay Dee : Jay Dee #17
Big shout to Iain and Teresa for hooking up a release I needed in my collection - "King of the Beats" by J Dilla! Lots of unreleased beats on this one, as well as a few the hardcore listeners might know. This particular beat bounces along with that characteristic Dilla swing, focusing on the low end for a pleasing groove.
Skyzoo & Pete Rock : Ten Days
If you like Pete Rock beats, you want to get the new "Retropolitan" album - 100% Soul Brother #1, with Brooklyn's Skyzoo helming mic proceedings throughout. This isn't the kind of beat that you automatically associate with Rock, but it just goes to show he can be versatile with it. Skyzoo is on that "get money" talk here, with a hook that conjures up this scene from "Paid In Full". As an aside - I totally forgot that the closing track on this album shares the podcast title, which I've wanted to use with the cover photo for a while!
Black Moon : A Haaa
My goodness, what a wait - sixteen years since the "Total Eclipse" album (2006's "Alter the Chemistry" was dope, but essentially a remix project), but at last Black Moon are back in full effect on "Rise of da Moon"! One of the original Timbs and hoodies crews, this episode wouldn't have been right without them. This tune is short but a banger, with a heavy digital bassline anchoring things while Buckshot showcases the flow and flavour that made him famous. Also check that heavy boom that kicks in between the 1 and 2 beats of each bar!
Black Thought ft. Styles P : Making A Murderer
Devastation from last year's "Streams of Thought, Volume 1" EP. More bars than HMP, more bars than Temple Bar. Black Thought is one of the world's best MCs, who needs no hook and offers no reprieve on his fire first verse. It's a brave man who would get on the mic after him, but Styles P takes the challenge and does himself proud - rising to the occasion. 9th Wonder's instrumental beats you into submission in the best way with the heaviness of the drum track, but it's Thought that holds the murder weapon here.
Children of Zeus : Ghost
CoZ maintained their hot streak of great music with "The Winter Tape", and it's just about the season for those tunes to get a re-airing. Tyler Daly takes sole charge of the vocals for this haunting tale of lost love.
Vanilla : Sweet Talk
The title track from the last of the soul-inspired beat tape trilogy by this UK producer is a smooth one. Vanilla works a melancholy 70s soul sample, and the drums are suitably subtle so as not to overpower it.
Professor Griff and the Last Asiatic Disciples : The Verdict
This is the first of two tracks from albums that opened up the nineties, just as we start to look towards a new decade. Professor Griff's solo debut album "Pawns in the Game" came during his initial suspension/expulsion, and found him on unfamiliar ground as he was not a rhyme writer by trade. Still, he delivered the rhymes with conviction (no pun intended) on a song that opens with a take on Louis Farrakhan's short play "The Trial", and the rest of the L.A.D come through too. Beat Master Clay D provides the beat, based on a familiar break that never gets old but packed with other samples in a way that is unaffordable in terms of clearance fees these days...
Master Ace : I Got Ta
When the Juice Crew veteran's name was still spelled this way, the year was 1990, haircuts were angular, and Ace was making his solo debut on the highly regarded "Take A Look Around", from which this track is taken! Mister Cee takes a classic James Brown sample and keeps the Godfather's voice in for Master Ace to work around lyrically as he states his intentions.
Joell Ortiz ft. Jadakiss, Sheek Louch, and Styles P : Put Some Money On It
Second straight tune working a vocal sample into the lyrics - this time, from the 2011 "Free Agent" mixtape with The LOX making a great guest appearance. Straight street bars all the way through, and Sean C and LV with the uptempo soul/funk production for a big win.
Sampa The Great ft. Krown : Time's Up
Massive thanks to Agent J for gifting me this LP! From Zambia via Botswana and Australia comes Sampa, whose new LP "The Return" jumps around stylistically but never lets you forget that this is an MC of quality. She and the featured guest Krown take the machinations of the record industry to task on this one and announce that the clock has run out on their BS. Silentjay's beat starts off centred around those stick hits to remind you of a clock, then brings those lows in to drive it forward. Definitely an album worth a listen!
Boogie Down Productions : Duck Down (Instrumental)
Early 90s ruggedness on this 12" release from the "Sex & Violence" LP. KRS and Pal Joey smack the beat into the drum sampler here, and right at the end you hear the sound effect that plays under one of Hip-Hop's best-remembered calls for a rewind!
Edgar Allen Floe : Arrest The President (Cypher God)
We played the original version of this track to open episode 90, almost three years ago, but I only recently learned that there was a remake! Edgar Allen Floe of the Justus League does a solid job with this, covering similar themes as the original and even borrowing some of the rhyme scheme while switching up the words themselves. The dope beat is pretty much the exact same as the Marley Marl-produced original, bringing that hectic 80s urgency and just begging to be cut up every time. Check out more of Floe's work on the rest of the album, "The Streetwise LP".

2017 fantasy football rankings: Top 150 overall
Welcome to the 2017 preseason! To get you ready for your drafts, we've got an updated rankings of the top 150 overall players in fantasy football heading into Week 1 of the preseason. Check out our full 2017 fantasy football preview draft guide!
Editor's update: We updated our preseason rankings following the second week of preseason action. The most notable change is reflected in the adjustment of Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott.
Bruce Arians wants to get David Johnson more touches. Everyone else wants to get more David Johnson.
The Arizona Cardinals running back was already worthy of No. 1 overall status in fantasy football drafts when he was averaging a paltry 23 touches a game in 2016.
But … 30!?
That, and Johnson’s stated goal of rushing and receiving 1,000 yards each this season makes Johnson SB Nation’s consensus choice for top overall fantasy football pick in 2017.
Nobody touched the ball more in 2016 than Johnson. No one gained more total yards from scrimmage and no one found the end zone more often. Again … on 23 touches. And with Carson Palmer not getting any younger or better, it makes sense for the Cardinals to rely even more heavily on their third-year back. Arians promises that even with 20 carries and 10 receptions per game, he will not wear Johnson out or leave him open to injury. Fantasy owners will take him at his word and watch the yards and touchdowns pile up.
But don’t despair if you’re sitting there with the second pick. Le’Veon Bell might not get 30 touches per game, but it’s what Bell might get when the season is over that could allow him to challenge Johnson for 2017’s most productive player.
Bell, who will play for the Steelers this season under the franchise tag of $12.1 million, will be a free agent in 2018, and that is all the incentive he’ll need to put up a monster season. Adding to Bell’s attractiveness as our No. 2 overall pick is his potential to play in all 16 games this season — something he has done just once in his first five seasons.
Despite missing four games in 2016, Bell finished third with 1,884 yards from scrimmage – 200 yards better than the No. 4 man on the list -- and was just 230 yards shy of Johnson, who played all 16 games. Bell had just five fewer receptions than Johnson, despite Johnson out-targeting Bell 120-96.
Bell ranked fourth in total touches (336), just 37 behind DJ. Bell was one of just two running backs to average over 100 yards rushing per game.
Give Bell four more games to work with (including two against the Browns) and he can make a pretty good case to go No. 1 himself.
The only other running back to make our Top 5 is the Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott, who led the league in rushing average as a rookie, was second in yards from scrimmage, and finished third in touchdowns. Elliott, who ranks fourth on our list, could miss a game or two to start the season because of a suspension. Elliott looks to follow in Johnson’s footsteps and do away with any talk of a sophomore jinx.
Antonio Brown, our unanimous top wide receiver on the board, checks in at No. 3 overall, as the era of taking a dominant running back first in fantasy drafts continues to recede. Odell Beckham Jr. of the Giants and Atlanta’s Julio Jones rank fifth and sixth, respectively, as five wide receivers crack our overall Top 10.
Unlike his teammate Bell, Brown signed a five-year deal with the Steelers in the offseason and should be motivated to improve on what was, by his lofty standards, a down year in 2016.
Beckham Jr., who ranked third in receptions (101) and yards (1,367) to go along with 10 touchdowns, will have the best No. 2 receiver of his career alongside him in 2017, with the Giants’ acquisition of former Jet Brandon Marshall.
Perhaps the most intriguing player move in the offseason was DeSean Jackson to Tampa Bay, where he should take some of the defensive pressure off superstar Mike Evans, who ranks No. 8 on our list. Evans caught 96 balls for 1,321 yards and 12 touchdowns last season despite being essentially the only option for Jameis Winston. With Winston a year older and Jackson demanding attention, Evans could be in for a monster season.
Rounding out our Top 10 are Chargers running back Melvin Gordon at No. 7, Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green at No. 9, and Buffalo running back LeSean McCoy at No. 10.
Our first non-RB/WR appears at No. 20 with tight end Rob Gronkowski, who will look to bounce back from an injury-plagued 2016. Our first quarterback appears at No. 31 with Aaron Rodgers, as the quarterback position remains one that can be deferred until later in drafts.
