W A T C H I N G
A far as hammer films go I'd say it's 4.5/10.
The location, the costumes, the acting are all really good. The story has a good build up, but the finale was a little stupid for my tastes and what I used to in Hammer Films.

Films I've watched in 2022 (175/210)
A really sweet comedy with three feisty ladies in the leading roles. This was also Richard Harris's film debut.

Gideon's Way: The 'V' Men (1.2, ITC, 1965)
"Any theories?"
"Oh, Vane has a lot of enemies."
"Social and political. Is he blaming the police for this?"
"He considers his protection... inadequate."
"It was, as things turned out."
#gideon's way#the v men#1965#alun falconer#cyril frankel#itc#john creasey#john gregson#alexander davion#daphne anderson#roland culver#keith baxter#angela douglas#allan cuthbertson#basil dignam#hugh ross williamson#christine finn#inigo jackson#dervis ward#dyson lovell#peter russell#a curious mixture of successes and failures. other shows had wrestled with the UK's contemporary emergence of a fascist minority (the Saint#did so several times‚ as did Strange Report‚ Special Branch and others). Falconer's script is surprisingly forthright and his politics are#not hard to discern; there's little euphemism here‚ Roland Culver's Vane is an outright fascist who spouts racist and antisemitic garbage#and has a framed picture of Hitler on his wall. we're clearly meant to find him repugnant‚ but this being a police procedural it is perhaps#naturally enough slightly hamstrung by having lead characters who must profess no political allegiance or favouritism (still‚ would it have#killed Gideon to quietly voice his distaste at some point?). much less well handled (as is unfortunately a repeat issue with this series)#is the gender politics that come into the side plot‚ in particular the way Gideon contacts the parents of a pregnant young girl who had#specifically expressed that she didn't want them to know. it's a grubby bit of paternalistic condescension on his part and an unfortunate#reflection on the attitudes of this era regarding unmarried mothers and the unspeakable (literally here) spectre of (gasp!) abortion

Quote
If such films are agnostic-fundamentalist in their simple severity, Ealing's more 'Anglican' tone has a softer spot for gentle eccentricities, and a more nuanced tolerance of the individual. Yet Pat Jackson's The Feminine Touch (1956) not only makes this nursing life look like a girl's public school dorm but preaches that, however poor the pay, excessive the work, and iniquitous the despotism of Matron Blimp's discipline, the - P.B.N., for Poor Bleedin' Nurse? - must do her duty and buckle uncomplainingly to, compensating, by unrewarded devotion, for the indifference of the hierarchy and the community. Its mixture of jollity, disillusionment and supineness, its acquiescence in the way the Florence Nightingale tradition is traded on to expedite deliberate meanness, is quite abject. It's sensitive enough to have, somewhere, a bad conscience, which makes it all the more infuriating. It's significant that though the nurse's life is subsequently treated sentimentally (No Time for Tears) and humorously (Carry On Nurse) it has never been treated, as it cries out to be, in such a way as to provide an 'angry young woman' with a positive, human, altogether non-political opportunity for constructive direct action.
