In any case, I was busily wandering around mapping when I found myself in a room with no exits. I remember that I started by heading west, and I think I actually had enough time to get the aha (that the clued words formed compound words/phrases), so looking at the map, maybe I went west a few steps and then north.

In the second phase, I found myself in a interconnected series of rooms, some of which had plaques cluing simple words. I polished the logic elements off quickly but stumbled a bit on extraction before I noticed the weird staticky bits that told me which letters to take to yield the correct answer. The first puzzle was a relatively traditional grid logic puzzle, which felt advantageous to me given that I’ve written a book of those. Party time.įinale 1.0: When the finale began, everyone leapt into the first room. When I arrived there was only a person or two there (if I remember correctly), though when I logged back in the next day, the room was teeming with competitors. Typing in further letters gave me minimal feedback, but entering all four answers one letter at a time took me to a waiting area for the finale. There wasn’t much to see there, but the first letter of the first answer was U, and typing it in sent me into a weird void where I could travel in any direction. I was less surprised when I checked the MUD map and saw that there was a pagoda to which I could navigate. So I have to admit that I was surprised when the fifth answer was… PAGODA. (Nor was the format or number of puzzles… we were going in pretty blind in terms of whether the last task would take hours or days.) As noted earlier, the first four daily puzzle answers were formed from text adventure direction abbreviations, which allowed for a certain degree of backsolving. Pre-Finale: In addition to providing fun individual competitions, the puzzles during the preceding week were a crucial step to participate in the finale, because while the five daily puzzles all launched from the same hub location, the start location for the finale wasn’t specified. I did promise a unique perspective on the endgame, and my memories aren’t getting any less faint, so let’s roll up our sleeves and dig in. That means I should probably clear the docket… oh, six months ago I wrote the first half of a recap about a hunt that’s now ten months old. The MIT Mystery Hunt (written by Setec Astronomy) is two and a half weeks away, and I’m sure I’ll have lots to say about the process and the results of that project after the fact. Puzzle PlayĪs far as colorblind accessibility goes, two of the puzzles required you to be able to distinguish between red and green. I would presume that some of that falls on the shared use of the Adventuron platform, but clearly a lot of work was done behind the scenes to ensure a great experience for the players. In another nice touch, there were eleven different authors, thirteen different adventure games, and nearly as many genres but all of the games were fairly consistent in their functionality and presentation. It was delightful and even without the meta-puzzles to solve on top of them, I would have really enjoyed the experience. You play a mall cop who needs to help them with their problems and solve the mystery of a food court break-in. My personal favorite was the one set in the food court of a mall staffed by a bunch of cute monsters looking for love and friendship. I was pretty pleased though, I was in 119th Place for that puzzle, but managed to get 50th place overall when I finished the final puzzle, four puzzles later!Įach adventure puzzle had a really fun theme, from classic adventure themes like Egyptian tombs and derelict spaceships to more novel ones, like meditative reflections on loss and grief or trying to wake up out of a recursive dream. For the Grand Finale I got off to a rough start with the first puzzle, getting stuck on the meta puzzle at the end due to a transposition error I made. I did pretty well on some of the earlier puzzles, my best rank being 22nd on Puzzle 4. I missed the puzzle launch on the first day, but was able to finish Puzzle 1 in time for the puzzle releases on day two. The game kept track of the exact moment you entered the final answer into the website, populating a leaderboard that ranked you on how quickly you solved the puzzle.

In each puzzle you needed to figure out how to beat an 8-bit adventure game, which would then lead you to the actual puzzle hunt puzzle that you needed to find the answer for. It felt like it was literally designed just for me!Įvery day new puzzles were released at 5pm (PST), with one puzzle released the first day, two puzzles the following four days, and then a grand finale that started on Saturday morning and featured five puzzles. In a really fortuitous coincidence, this year’s hunt was designed to be a good on-ramp for beginner players and the theme was 8-bit adventure games. While I had heard of the famous MIT Puzzle Hunt, I had never heard of an online-only one before a friend posted about the 2021 Cryptex Hunt on Twitter. “The 2021 Cryptex Hunt is an online puzzle hunt for beginners.” Personal Experience
