DOH-7: No deaths yet in Cebu due to COVID-19
#PHinfo: DOH-7: No deaths yet in Cebu due to COVID-19
DOH-7 Regional Director Dr. Jaime Bernadas (left) with Dr. Shelbay Blanco (right) of the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit giving updates on the COVID-19 situation in Central Visayas during the presscon held March 24, 2020. (PIA7)
CEBU CITY, March 26 (PIA) -- Department of Health (DOH-7) Regional Director Dr. Jaime Bernadas clarified that to date, Cebu province has not reported any COVID-19 deaths.
This he announced during the presscon held March 24, 2020 to debunk speculations over COVID-19 deaths in Cebu province that are circulating on social media.
Bernadas said of the four patients who died in Cebu who were earlier categorized as persons under investigation (PUIs), two tested negative while the other two are still for confirmatory tests.
He explained swab samples were taken from the said patients because the attending physicians have indicated that they are possible COVID-19 suspects.
“Kaning upat gibutang ni sila nato as (COVID) suspects pero dili pud ingnon nga namatay ni sila tungod sa COVID-19. Ato pa ni ipaklaro ug ato pud i-anunsyo unsa ang resulta aron di put ta mabalaka (These four were identified as COVID-19 suspects but it doesn’t mean they all died due to COVID-19. We have to confirm this first before we announce the results,” said Bernadas.
The four patients were suffering from underlying conditions.
Patient No. 1, a senior citizen, died due to multiple complications including acute respiratory infection, pulmonary tuberculosis, and diabetes, while the final diagnosis for Patient No. 2 was due to sudden cardiac death.
Patient No. 3, aged 40-year-old, died of sepsis, tuberculosis arthritis, and anemia, and Patient No. 4 suffered from status asthmaticus and died due to complications.
As of March 24, 2020, Bernadas said there is only one confirmed case in Cebu province, the 65-year-old patient who is currently admitted at Chong Hua Hospital in Mandaue City and is said to be recovering.
Tests for confirmatory results
The Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) sent more swab samples for confirmatory testing to the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM).
An additional 31 samples were tested on March 24, 2020 at VSMMC, of which 25 were negative while six are still for confirmation.
Bernadas assured that proactive containment is being done to patients whose tests are up for confirmatory testing. (poc/PIA7)

P.E.I. reports 5 new COVID-19 cases Monday; province investigating possible community transmission
Prince Edward Island is reporting five new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, four of which involve individuals under the age of 19.
Dr. Heather Morrison, P.E.I.'s chief public health officer, says one of Monday's cases involves an individual in their 60s who has a history of travel outside of Atlantic Canada. Morrison says this person is self-isolating and contact tracing is complete.
Three cases are linked to the West Royalty Elementary School in Charlottetown. These cases are all close contacts of previously reported cases.
Morrison says the investigation into the COVID-19 outbreak at West Royalty Elementary School continues.
One of Monday's cases involves a student at Charlottetown Rural High School. This case is a close contact of a previously reported infection.
Morrison says there are now eight positive COVID-19 cases linked to West Royalty Elementary School and two positive cases linked to Charlottetown Rural High School.
"Many of the students at Charlottetown Rural are fully vaccinated, which provides more protection to the entire school population," said Morrison.
All close contacts of the new cases will be contacted and directed on the next steps to take.
"In addition, any staff or students at Charlottetown Rural who are not fully vaccinated should be tested tomorrow at one of the Health P.E.I. testing clinics," advised Morrison.
"At this point, we have not been able to link this outbreak or the cases at Charlottetown Rural to the West Royalty school or from being outside of the province. We are considering these situations to be associated with community transmission."
Morrison says Public Health will know more about the extent of transmission in the coming days and expects to see more cases.
There are currently no hospitalizations due to COVID-19 on P.E.I.
P.E.I. has 19 active cases of the novel coronavirus. Since Friday, Morrison says P.E.I. has identified 16 new positive cases of COVID-19, 11 of which involve individuals under the age of 19. She added many of these cases involve individuals who are not eligible to be vaccinated because they are under the age of 12.
As of Monday morning, more than 270 close contacts of positive cases have been identified by Public Health. Morrison expects that number to rise close to 400 by the end of Monday.
Since January 2021, 93 per cent of P.E.I.'s cases involve individuals who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated against the virus.
Morrison says seven per cent of the cases since January involve people who are fully vaccinated.
VACCINE UPATE
As of Saturday, over 247,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered on P.E.I.
In total, 92.2 per cent of the eligible population has received one dose of vaccine, while 83.7 per cent have received two doses.
"Approximately 42,000 people in P.E.I., however, are not fully vaccinated and that includes 30,000 who have not received even one dose of vaccine," said Morrison.
Morrison says the province received information from the school system regarding the vaccine status of staff.
She says an average of 90 per cent of staff are fully vaccinated – a number she would like to see higher.
"However, it is not 100 per cent and it is not high enough for me to be comfortable," said Morrison. "So, we have now initiated discussions this morning with education for next steps and those next steps include discussions around being fully vaccinated or undergoing regular testing."
P.E.I.'s top doctors says other areas of discussion include enhanced testing at points of entry and masking.
FOOD SUPPORT FOR THOSE IMPACTED BY SCHOOL CLOSURES
In a news release on Monday, P.E.I. says the Department of Social Development and Housing is offering food support for Island families impacted by the school closures in Charlottetown.
"We provide pre-cooked, reheatable meals for children that are delivered directly to your home for the week of Sept.14 to 17, 2021," read the release.
Public health says the meals will be delivered between 2 p.m. to 4 p.m from Tuesday to Friday to the provided address.
"Please provide detailed delivery instructions pertaining to your type of accommodation," the release said. "We can also make arrangements to deliver to childcare locations or workplaces as necessary."
Health officials say any family facing food security troubles is eligible to receive meals for children. Public Health says the program is on a self-referral basis and children must be able to consume solid food.
Meals for families that sign up will be delivered in the Charlottetown area to varied types of homes, including apartments, house, day programs, duplex's and more.
Registration for the food support program can be found on P.E.I.'s government website or by calling 902-213-5506.
POTENTIAL COVID-19 EXPOSURES
Prince Edward Island also announced several potential COVID-19 exposures in Charlottetown.
Anyone at the following locations should monitor for symptoms. If symptoms develop, you should self-isolate and schedule and COVID-19 test.
Angel Nail on Sept. 8 (75 Kensington Rd. in Charlottetown)
Between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

New Brunswick reported three new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, along with 26 recoveries, as the total number of active infections drops to 137.
Two of Tuesday's cases are in the province's Fredericton region (Zone 3) and involve two people 19 and under. Both cases are related to travel.
One case is in the Moncton region (Zone 1) and involves an individual in their 20s. Public Health says this case remains under investigation.
There are three patients in hospital in New Brunswick due to COVID-19, with one in an intensive care unit.
VACCINE UPATE
As of Tuesday, 75.2 per cent of New Brunswickers age 12 and older are fully vaccinated and 84.6 per cent have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
“Each dose of vaccine administered represents another degree of protection for that individual as well as for their family, friends and community,” said Health Minister Dorothy Shephard. “Our high and increasing level of vaccination is the main reason our hospitalization numbers remain low.”
In total,1,112,456 vaccine doses have been administered in New Brunswick.
VACCINE CLINICS
Beginning Tuesday, Public Health says the regional health authorities will have appointments available with the Moderna vaccine, which is now approved for children 12 and up.
"Previously, only the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine had been approved for those between 12 and 18," wrote Public Health in a news release.
All eligible New Brunswickers can book their second dose appointments now for a date that is at least 28 days after their first dose.
COVID-19 CASE DATA
New Brunswick has had 2,763 cumulative cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.
In total, 2,579 people have recovered, and 46 people have died in the province from COVID-19.
Public health says 1,265 tests were completed in New Brunswick since Monday. A total of 410,284 tests have been processed since the start of the pandemic.
The number of cases are broken down by New Brunswick’s seven health zones:
Zone 1 – Moncton region: 740 confirmed cases (61 active cases)
Zone 2 – Saint John region: 333 confirmed cases (8 active cases)
Zone 3 – Fredericton region: 517 confirmed cases (38 active cases)
Zone 4 – Edmundston region: 770 confirmed cases (15 active cases)
Zone 5 – Campbellton region: 190 confirmed cases (2 active cases)
Zone 6 – Bathurst region: 149 confirmed cases (5 active cases)
Zone 7 – Miramichi region: 64 confirmed cases (8 active cases)
POTENTIAL PUBLIC EXPOSURES
Anyone with symptoms of the virus, as well as anyone who has been at the site of a possible public exposure, is urged to request a test online or call Tele-Care at 811 to get an appointment.

DavNor moves for better health, socio-economic capacities in 2021
#PHinfo: DavNor moves for better health, socio-economic capacities in 2021
DAVAO DEL NORTE, 28 December (PIA) – In year 2021, the provincial government gears to increase the number of health facilities, ensure food-sufficiency, prevent flooding, develop more tourist destinations. It also bids to prioritize education and agri-development.
During the year-end episode of Kapihan sa DavNor on December 23, 2020, Governor Edwin I. Jubahib announced the formation of five rural health units in New Corella, Asuncion, Talaingod, Santo Tomas, and Panabo City.
“Nag atubang man gud ta sa pandemya nga problema…ang atoang pag abli sa atong COVID testing nga facility nga gibutang nato sa DRMC nga mahimo na siyang full operation (We are facing the pandemic problem…the COVID testing facility we opened in Davao Regional Medical Center will be in full operation),” Jubahib said.
“In support ani, ang atong pag patindog sa lima ka rural health unit, mao ni ang mga hospitals nga ibutang sa upat ka munisipyo ug isa ka syudad (In support to this, we will construct five rural health units in four municipalities and one city),” he added.
These health units will cater minor medical cases so that district hospitals will have more room to handle the more serious cases.
According to Jubahib, this will allow the province to have a dedicated hospital for COVID19-related cases only, considering the unexpected extent of COVID-19 transmission.
In addition, he announced the opening of dialysis centers, with 40-bed capacity, in the district hospitals of Carmen, Island Garden City of Samal, and Kapalong.
Aside from strengthening the province’s medical capacity, Jubahib announced its plans for 2021 towards food-sufficiency, flood prevention, tourism development, education, and agriculture.
With the full implementation of “Kausa sa Agrikultura ug Panginabuhian sa Barangay” or KAAGAPAY program in 2021, there will be trading posts where everyone in the province can buy the products of each family’s backyard harvest, he said.
The trading post will house a 50 million-peso cold storage facility to store the vegetables and poultry.
“Full implementation of KAAGAPAY in 2021. Tanang panimalay ato nang e-register under KAAGAPAY (All households we will register under KAAGAPAY). Naa tay P50million para cold storage facility (We have a 50 million-peso cold storage facility),” he said.
On flood prevention, Jubahib revealed his bid for more dredging and flood control equipment to ensure safety of the province from flooding.
He also envisions development of the province’s tourism with P200 million that has beenbudgeted for this thrust.
As well, Jubahib announced the P36 million budget to support DepEd (Department of Education) through the local school boards.
For agriculture, he intends to pursue land-banking strategy to establish agriculture facilities of the government such as rice mills, mechanical driers, solar driers, and warehouses on lands purchased by the government.   (Jan Vincent Leuterio, PIA-XI)

(VPSB/PIA10)
