As part of its money-laundering investigation against arrested YES Bank co-founder Rana Kapoor, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) was now looking into several multi-crore-rupee loans issued by YES Bank to corporate houses that turned non-performing assets (NPAs), officials said.
The ED has widened its probe in the case, taking it beyond the loan it gave to Dewan Housing and Finance Limited (DHFL) and is now looking at the bank's books to see if the Kapoor family and others received any kickbacks from business houses in lieu of non-initiation of the loan recovery processes.
The central agency is probing the Rs 600-crore loan scam-hit DHFL gave to a firm "controlled" by Rana Kapoor's family -- his wife and three daughters -- allegedly for not recovering from it over Rs 4,000 crore of loans issued by YES Bank.
YES Bank CEO Ravneet Gill was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at its office in Mumbai on Monday, news agency PTI reported on Monday quoting sources.
The sources added that the investigators had also zeroed in on Kapoor's purported foreign assets in the UK, France and the US to see if the proceeds of money laundering had been used to purchase these assets by the banker and his family.
A dozen alleged shell firms, the Kapoor family's investments of Rs 2,000 crore, and over Rs 4,500 crore worth of other transactions are under the scanner of the agency at present.
The agency has also found that 44 costly paintings, one of them purchased from Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, are allegedly in the possession of Kapoor. The ED has seized that painting and brought to its office.
A letter written by Priyanka Gandhi to Kapoor in June 2010 confirmed the sale of this portrait of her father and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, painted by M F Husain, for Rs 2 crore. In the letter, Priyanka Gandhi thanked Kapoor for purchasing the portrait "which was presented to him in 1985 at the Congress party centenary celebrations and is presently in my ownership and possession".
While the Congress party has said that the deal was transparent, as the payment of Rs 2 crore was received by Vadra from Kapoor through cheque and was reflected in income tax returns, the ED is probing if the painting was owned by her or the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
It is also investigating if the provenance certificate (signed by an artist to state his genuine work) was signed by Vadra and under what circumstances. Apparently, this Rs 2 crore was used by Vadra to purchase a property in Himachal Pradesh.
The portrait had been made by celebrated artist Husain and gifted to Gandhi during the AICC centenary celebrations in 1985.
Kapoor and his wife are also expected to be confronted by the ED with Kapil Wadhawan, DHFL promoter and CMD. He was arrested by the ED in the Iqbal Mirchi PMLA case and is out on bail at present.
A big housing finance company and a financial insurance firm are also under the scanner of the ED for their dealings with Kapoor and YES Bank.
A particular instance of a popular power generation company taking Rs 500 crore loan from the bank and it later turning NPA is also being probed by the ED.
The Income Tax Department is also set to initiate action against Kapoor and others for tax evasion and possession of alleged undeclared foreign assets.
Meanwhile, the Odisha unit of the Bharatiya janata Party (BJP) on Monday alleged a conspiracy behind the deposits of Rs 545 crore of the Shree Jagannath Temple in capital-starved bank and demanded a probe into it by the ED. Senior BJP leader Bijay Mohapatra also claimed the involvement of some members of the Jagannath Temple Managing Committee and two government officials in depositing the funds in the private bank.
The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD), however, rubbished the allegations and said the saffron party was misleading the people. The Odisha government had on Sunday sought the Centre's intervention for release of the funds in the interest of devotees.
BJP state general secretary Prithviraj Harichandan had on Sunday held the state government responsible for pushing the temple's funds into uncertainty. Reacting to the charges, BJD spokesperson and the party's Rajya Sabha nominee Subhas Singh said: "The BJP leaders are trying to mislead people over the matter. It is an old habit of Mohapatra to politicise issues related to the Lord Jagannath Temple.
Earlier, Congress Legislature Party leader Narasingha Mishra had demanded a statement from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik over the matter. Odisha Chief Minister Patnaik has been silent on the issue.
In another development, bondholders with exposure to YES Bank's Additional Tier-1 (AT-1) securities have approached the Bombay High Court against a decision to write down their investments in the struggling bank as part of a draft rescue plan, news agency IANS reported.
Under the draft resolution plan for YES Bank given by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) after superseding its board, the banking regulator capped deposit withdrawals at Rs 50,000 per person and appointed an administrator. It also proposed to write off Rs 8,400 crore worth of AT1 bonds on the lender's balancesheet while retaining equity.
Axis and Nippon India Mutual Fund Trustees may have moved the court to seek relief. It is, however, yet to be confirmed by the fund houses. According to an Icra report, 16 Indian banks have Rs 93,669 crore worth of AT1 bonds outstanding. But the development in case of YES Bank has triggered a debate about the seniority of the AT1 bondholders over equity investors.
But RBI is within its powers to write down AT1 bonds under Basel-III norms.

Hima Das Appointed Sports Ambassador Of Assam
India’s ace sprinter Hima Das was appointed as Sports Ambassador of Assam to inspire budding players of northeastern state to aim big and young generation to take up sports seriously.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has earlier confirmed that Indian Athlete Hima Das will be named as the first sports ambassador of the state.
The announcement came after Hima Das recently became the first Indian woman to win gold at IAAF World U-20 Athletics Championships.
Om Prakash to be new Nepal Chief Justice
Justice Om Prakash Mishra has been sworn in as new Chief Justice of Nepal.
The President Vidya Devi Bhandari administered oath of office and secrecy to Justice Mishra in Kathmandu.
Nepal’s Parliamentary Hearing Committee (PHC) unanimously endorsed his name for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Justice Mishra was appointed as a justice of the Nepal’s Supreme Court in 2014.
RBI intervenes as rupee hit 72.5 against US dollar
The rupee breached 72.5 a dollar mark and touched an all-time low of 72.67 intraday trade.
The current account deficit widened to a five-year high in the first quarter of the current financial year to $15.8 billion or 2.4% of the GDP.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the movement in rupee is because of global factors.
He also said that except the dollar, the rupee has strengthened or remained in a range against all other currencies. Reserve Bank of India has intervened as rupee depreciation continued unabated.

According to the Department of Posts, Aadhaar is not mandatory for booking international parcel but is one of the optional identity documents.

SpiceJet launches air cargo arm
Spicejet introduced air cargo services on local and international routes.

Exercise Nomadic Elephant-2018 inaugurated
Indo-Mongolia joint exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant-2018′, commenced at Mongolian Armed Forces (MAF) Five Hills Training Area, Mongolia on 10th September 2018.
Exercise Nomadic Elephant is an annual, bilateral exercise which is designed to strengthen the partnership between Indian Army and Mongolian Armed Forces.
The Indian contingent is represented by a contingent of ‘17 PUNJAB Regiment’.
Indo-US joint military drill in Uttarakhand
A joint military training exercise between India and USA named as “Yudh Abhyas 2018” will be conducted in Uttarakhand from 16 to 29 September.
This is the 14th edition of the joint military exercise hosted alternately by both the countries.
The two-week exercise will see the participation of about 350 personnel of the US Army and ‘Garud Division’ of the Indian Armed Forces.

NRTI, India's 1st Railway Varsity Starts Operations In Vadodara
The first of its kind university in the country in the transport sector, the National Rail and Transportation Institute (NRTI), started operations.
Currently, it is functioning out of the National Academy of Indian Railways, Vadodara.
Funded by ministry of railways, with University of California, Berkeley and Cornell University as its international partners, the university started with two undergraduate courses - BSc Transportation Technology and BBA Transportation Managements- with 50 students each.

Mr.Geng’s focus on developing social infrastructure in Pakistan chimes with Prime Minister Imran Khan’s emphasis on pursuing a people-oriented approach.
Odisha plans to set up 17 digital dispensaries
Seventeen digital dispensaries are going to be established in remote and inaccessible areas of Odisha’s Ganjam district to provide primary medical support.
The digital dispensaries will provide outpatient department services through online video consultation with doctors.
The units will also serve as basic pathological testing laboratories and generic medicine-dispensing centres.
India steps up partnership with Afghanistan
India and Afghanistan agreed to enhance cooperation under the ‘New Development Partnership’.
India had announced taking up 116 “high impact community developmental projects” in Afghanistan.

Yes Bank raises $400 million
Yes Bank has raised $400 million through syndicated loan facility, borrowed out of its IFSC Banking Unit (IBU) in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT).
The bank said this amount will be utilized to support the IBU’s growing business.
According to Rana Kapoor (MD and CEO, Yes Bank) Yes Bank’s IBU has crossed $3 billion balance sheet within 3 years of starting operations at GIFT City.
Haryana signs MoU with Indian Oil
The Haryana government on September 10, 2018, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to set up an ethanol plant in Panipat.
The plant with a proposed capacity of 100 kilolitres of ethanol per day will manage crop residue and prevent straw burning before the upcoming paddy season.
The pact will be valid for one year.

Health Ministry Implements HIV AIDS Act 2017
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has announced the implementation of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017.
According to the law, every HIV infected or affected person below the age of 18 has the right to live in a shared household and enjoy its facilities.
The act criminalises any kind of discrimination against people suffering from AIDS in terms of treatment, employment and workplace.
Those violating the act could be jailed for up to two years or fined up to Rs1 lakh or both.
It also prohibits an individual from publishing information or advocating feelings of hatred against them and those living with them.

My Travelling Experience to Dwarka and Somnath in Saurashtra Gujarat
I am Nihar Mishra of Odisha, a senior citizen and today I am sharing my travelling experience of Saurashtra area in Gujarat, which I recently visited with my wife. I also express my thankfulness to Tour My India for letting me share my experience.
My wife and I decided to have a darshan of Dwarkadhish and Somnath as we had heard a lot about these sacred destinations. So we made a detailed plan and booked a Saurashtra package of 4 days 3 nights under Gujarat tourism with a package cost of 8.8k per person (there is a 20% discount for senior citizens). The tour started from hotel Taran in front of Sabarmati Ashram of Ahmedabad on 8th June and the weather was too hot with temperature touching the mark of 43℃. We were total 10 travellers assisted by one guide, a driver and a cleaner.
Day 1: A Visit to Rajkot and Dwarka
As per day-one programme, we had to reach Dwarka which is at a distance of 450 km via Rajkot and few tourist spots. Before reaching Rajkot we had our breakfast in a very elegant roadside Dhaba and the food (dosa) it served was delicious. Our next stop was Rajkot Ramakrishna Ashram. The guide explained that Swamiji spent a lot of time here and the local king sponsored swamiji for his famous America journey. The atmosphere was peaceful and tranquil. We also visited Bala Hanuman Mandir where for last 54 years Ramdhun Kirtan is going on uninterrupted.
We reached Dwarka at around 4.30 pm and all of us landed at hotel Taran of Gujarat tourism corporation. The hotel offered us a very nice double a.c. rooms and overall staff and management was also satisfactory. After relaxing in the room for a while, we went to Sudama Rope Setu over river Gomati and saw the sacred 5 wells built by Pandavas including famous meditation spot of five rishis. We attended the evening aarti of Dwarkadhish which was soothing and enchanting. Our guide told that Dwarka was gifted to Balram by his father-in-law and Sreekrishna decided to establish his kingdom here and rule. We had our dinner in the hotel, puri, rice, sabzi, salad, dal for Rs 100 only (at govt rates).
Day 2: A Visit to Nageshwar Shiva Temple, Bet Dwarka and Porbandar
Next morning we proceeded on local tour and went to Nageshwar Shiva Temple, which is one of the twelve jyotirlingas. The speciality here is a very big size murty (Deity) of Lord Shiva in the open sky. From there, we went to Bet Dwarka via a ferry as it is situated in an island in the sea. Bet Dwarka was the living place of Sri Krishna with his queens Jambavati, Rukmani and Satyabhama. Here Sri Krishna embraced his friend Sudama and tasted 2 handful rice sent by Sudama’s wife and removed the poverty hardships of his dearest boyhood friend. Really, it was a memorable experience of the place and that of a sea journey.
We had our lunch in the hotel and then post it, we started for Porbandar, en route, we visited Kirti Mandir. This building was constructed adjacent to Mahatma Gandhi’s birthplace. We could visit the living rooms of Mahatma Gandhi’s house and there are good portraits of Bapu and his wife Kasturba Gandhi. There is also a library and several pictures from different stages Mahatma’s life which reminds us about freedom struggle. It was evening and we returned to our hotel, which was located just by the seaside, I tell u friends what a beautiful scene it was. The setting sun, cool breeze blowing and sea tides were amazing – it took away all our tiredness. We all started chit-chatting and enjoyed the evening in our hotel with beautiful view.
Day 3: A Visit to Somnath Temple and Junagarh
On the third day, we left the hotel sharp 7 am after taking breakfast (puri sabji upma) for a darshan of Somnath. On the way, we took a holy dip in Triveni ghat (confluence point of 3 rivers Hiran, Saraswati, Kapil) which merges with Arabian Sea. All sins are washed away with a dip at this confluence as is it said.
We also went to Bhalka (arrow) Tirth where Lord Vishnu is believed to have left his human form after being hit by an arrow. Also he was cremated by the Pandavas near the ghat. There is Laxminarayan Temple, which depicts all the 24 avataras (incarnation) of the lord. We were enjoying our visit to this grand temple when our guide cautioned us to proceed to Somnath to avoid delay.
A Brief Introduction of Somnath Temple by our Guide
Mythologically, Som (moon) nath temple was built as a golden temple as Lord Shiva saved him from a curse of Dakhyaprajapati. Somnath is first jyotirlinga and is mentiond in Rigveda.
Historically this this temple was destroyed 17 times by invaders like Gazni and Allaudin Khillji, and Aurangzeb. The present temple was built by Sardar Ballabhai Patel in1950 and was inaugurated by the then President, Sankardayal Sharma.
There is three-tier security starting 2 km away from the temple. We attended the noon aarti, the place is magnificent with sea shore and divine atmosphere. Photography and mobiles are restricted inside the temple.
A Visit to Junagarh
After the darshan, we had our lunch and thereafter proceeded to Junagarh, which is said to be the last place in this part of the state to become an Indian territory. The place is surrounded by mountains and hills that is known as Girnar. We visited the Damodar Temple here along with caves of Muchkunda who destroyed Kalyaban. Then there is Mahabat Maqbara, which is said to be the mini Taj Mahal built by Mahabat Khan II.
Feeling extremely tired, we went to our hotel for a night halt.
Day 4: A Visit to Maa Amba Temple, Swaminarayan Temple, and Few More Attractions
On the final day after breakfast in Taran Hotel (upma puri bhaji at Rs 60), we moved to a newly constructed Maa Amba Mandir built by Patel community. It is spread over a very large area with spectacular architecture, spacious gardens that has numerous beautiful flowers and Mother Goddess’ s idol. Water and tea was free here. We spent couple of hours here.
Our next destination was Swaminarayan Temple. It took 1 hour to reach there. Really, it was an eye-catching sight. It is said Lord Swaminarayana himself urged to build this temple. We all went round the samadhi pitha of Swaminarayanaji. There is a good food court in the temple premises and the food served tastes good. The temple has a large premises and we all spent 1 hr here after taking Lunch.
Next we proceeded to Jalaram Temple, which is dedicated to Jalarambapa, a revered saint. People around the world visit this temple which is situated in a small village of Gujarat, Virpur. It is 52 km from Rajkot and one peculiar thing about this temple is that donations are forbidden here. There is free food serves to all. We also viewed the jhola and danda of Jalarambapa. There was also the original Hanuman idol given by God to Jalarambapa;s wife Virbai.
Our last destination was Sasan Gir National Park. We booked tickets to take a wildlife safari in the reserve. Gir forest is only forest in the world except Africa where lions move freely in a big area. During our 45 minutes tour, we could see lions in groups resting as well as walking. Also deer and leopards were spotted during our safari tour.
Now friends, it was 4.45 pm and our tour came to an end. We reached Ahmedabad at 7 pm and bade goodbye and departed with sharing our mobile numbers. Our flight to Bhubaneswar was at 6 am.
