NICK & NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST
Dir. PETER SOLLETT; Wri. LORENE SCARAFIA; Music. MARK MOTHERSBAUGH; Starring. MICHAEL CERA, KAT DENNINGS, ARI GRAYNOR, ALEXIS DZIENA, AARON YOO, RAFI GAVRON, JAY BARUCHEL, JONATHAN B. WRIGHT; R.T. 90 mins; 2008, USA
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Nick O’Leary (Cera) is a lovelorn teenage bass-player obsessed with Tris (Dziena), the unfaithful schoolgirl who dumped him but keeps stringing him along.  Norah Silverberg (Dennings) is the teenage daughter of a record producer whose own non-existent love life is more than a little due to her constantly playing “designated sober best friend” to unruly party girl Caroline (Graynor). Convoluted circumstances conspire to push them together over the course of a chaotic night out in New York City as they search for the impromptu performing venue of their favourite indie band, Where’s Fluffy?
WHY IT’S AWESOME: I don’t usually go in for romantic comedies, but every once in a while a notable exception comes along that shows some neat twist or an alternative “outsider” quality that I can latch onto and run with.  Juno remains the gold standard for me, but this one comes close in terms of indie charm and geeky lovability, playing like a mash-up of Diablo Cody and a millennial take on John Hughes-era classic screwball comedy.  A big part of its success is the fact that it’s SO EASY to relate to the two main protagonists – I was an awkward loser when I was their age, definitely not one of the cool kids, so these two sassy little geeks are about as close as I can get to a little vicarious nostalgic projection for an hour-and-a-half … although I’ll also admit that none of my teenage night-out shenanigans ever got to be this enjoyably, riotously entertaining.  Playing out over the course of a single night, it’s a thoroughly hilarious misadventure of drunken abandon, awkward matchmaking and wonderfully barbed dialogue, all playing out to a deliciously ear-wormy indie soundtrack featuring Vampire Weekend, We Are Scientists and Richard Hawley among many other little gems. The biggest selling point here, however, is the winning chemistry between Michael Cera and Kat Dennings – they’re great on their own (Cera was already riding high thanks to Arrested Development, Superbad and Juno, but this was definitely a firm step towards the future heights of Scott Pilgrim and Molly’s Game, while Dennings was already showing off the truly awesome comedic talent that makes her so effortlessly watchable in 2 Broke Girls), but the comic sparks fly best when they’re together, and they’re ably supported by Ari Graynor, who frequently steals the film as hot-mess lush Caroline, Alexis Dziena in an enjoyably reprehensible turn as Nick’s manipulative mini-bitch ex Tris, and the dynamite double-act of adorability that is Aaron Yoo (Disturbia) and Rafi Gavron as Thom and Dev, the very gay guitarist and singer of Nick’s band The Jerk-Offs.  (Indeed, another one of my very favourite things about this movie is the way it wears its LGBT colours on its sleeve and makes no apologies about it.) This is sweet but cut with a zesty edge of sarcastic sass, just the right balance of romance and comedy, never in danger of descending into the realms of twee sugariness, so it’s EXACTLY the sort of thing I look for in this kind of movie.  Unsurprising, then, that screenwriter Lorene Scarafia went on to make her directorial debut with 2012’s end-of-the-world satire Seeking a Friend For the End of the World, another quirky, alternative romantic comedy I totally responded to.  Funny how that works, isn’t it?

Acadia, St.FX hockey teams involved in heated brawl
An Atlantic University Sport Men’s hockey game in Wolfville, N.S. became heated on Saturday night as the Acadia Axemen and St.FX X-Men were involved in a wild brawl that is expected to result in numerous suspensions.
“Unbelievable, I have never seen this in 30 years of covering hockey in University”, said Acadia play-by-play broadcaster Len Hawley as the melee spilled into the Axemen bench.
The brawl started midway through the period, after Acadia took a 4-2 lead on a shorthanded goal. Before the puck was dropped on the ensuing faceoff, St.FX forward Regan Spears appeared to throw the first punch, connecting with Axemen forward Rodney Southam.
The brawl escalated from there, as sticks and gloves went flying and players from both teams paired up and started swinging. The unexpected action caught the fans in attendance by surprise.
“We weren’t expecting that,” says Cody Myre who shot one of a few videos of the brawl that went viral on social media. “My dad even made a comment about not seeing any fights tonight because it was the kind of game they wanted to keep their heads on for,”
It's unclear if there were any injuries, but videos posted to social media show players on both teams hurling profanities, striking each other, and grabbing each other's jerseys. The brawl between the two rival teams went on for nearly two minutes, before officials were able to separate all the players.
The game had to be delayed for approximately 20 minutes as the referees sorted out the penalties. When all was said and done, the referees had ejected 13 total players, both head coaches and assessed a total of 310 penalty minutes.
Now, the league says they are reviewing the incident, and expect to hand out several suspensions to both teams.
In a statement to CTV News, Atlantic University Sport Executive Director Phil Currie said;
“We take this matter very seriously. Our top concern is always the safety and well-being of our student athletes. The incident is currently being reviewed by our AUS Men’s Hockey Commissioner, who will then hand down supplementary discipline where appropriate, in accordance with our men’s hockey regulations.”
As per the USports playing regulations, any player that receives a 10-minute fighting major is ejected from the game and handed a one-game suspension. Currie says the league's commissioner will be interviewing players and coaches in the coming days, before handing out discipline.
Cody Myre says from his viewpoint, there may have been some provocation that lead to the line brawl.
“It was crazy, from where we were sitting it looked like St.FX was squirting water at the Acadia boys on their way past the bench,” says Myre. “And that lead to two of them sort of agreeing on having a fight next shift, and as soon as they hit the ice, that’s what happened, they went at it.”
Harsh words were exchanged by the coaching staff as well, as the brawl spilled into the Axemen bench.
“Brad Peddle is up on top of the bench, talking to Chris McDonald, giving it to him and they’re going back and forth,” said Len Hawley on the AVR broadcast of the game.
While some fans may have enjoyed the extracurriculars, hockey experts are disappointed.
“They’re student athletes first, and fighting shouldn’t be part of the game. It isn’t part of the game on the U.S. side in Division 1 hockey, and it shouldn’t be at the USports level, because they are students first,” says former hockey executive Kevin Cameron.
Cameron played for St.FX in the early 1980’s, when the AUS’s ‘No Fighting’ rule was passed. He says he understands tempers flare on the ice, but thinks that what occurred Saturday night in Wolfville is unacceptable.
“This is hockey played at the highest amateur level in Canada. Most of these student athletes have come through the Junior Hockey system, in fact almost all through Major Junior Hockey were fighting is still accepted,” explains Cameron. “It’s remarkable when you think of the high level, the intense level that these young men play under that hockey has been eliminated to the extent that it has.
In what was a potential first-round playoff match-up the Axemen were able to defeat the X-Men 6-3. But the result of the game was overshadowed by the bench-clearing brawl, and the suspensions that are sure to follow.

Franklin County gathers for a team huddle during Friday’s action. (Nicole Hester | The Natchez Democrat)
Franklin County’s Blake Barfoot raised his glove high above his head and when he brought it back down, there was a baseball sitting perfectly inside.
Barfoot caught the first out of Saturday’s Dixie Youth District 6 T-ball All-Star championship game, stopping the Natchez Americans’ lead-off batter in his tracks.
Despite Franklin County’s early spark, it was the Natchez Americans who were raising the trophy in the end.
The Americans had a come-from-behind victory to claim the district title, 19-11.
“You never know, so you just have to keep playing,” Natchez Americans coach Robert Segrest said. “We were able to come back. They did awesome.”
Franklin County was leading by one run after two innings thanks to its early defensive efforts. Along with Barfoot’s catch, Franklin County made two quick outs on throws to first base in the first inning.
“Today we made some good plays,” Franklin County coach Jason Brumfield said. “Our kids played. They listened, and they did what they were supposed to do.”
Trailing 9-8, it turns out the Americans had a few defensive plays of their own.
Americans’ Bentley Gann completed a double play and fielded the third out at first base to hold Franklin County to no runs in the top of the third inning.
“That was a turning point for sure,” Segrest said. “Everybody is allowed to get seven runs (in each inning), and the easiest way to win is to not let them get their seven.
That means your defense has to do work, and when your are on the other end of the stick like we were that first inning, you have to make sure you defense is on.”
The Natchez Americans scored its seven runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead and hold on for good. Gann nailed a three-run inside-the-park home run to left field to seal the win in the fourth.
Gann ended the game batting 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
“That double play on first (base) hurt them, but we were still in it,” Brumfield said. “We just couldn’t finish.”
Alongside Gann, Andrew Goldman led the Americans batting 3-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional run scored.
Lucas Mullins, Nathan Gonzaga, Jax Beach and Carter Cook all chipped in with three hits of their own.
Austin Brumfield, Tucker Hawley and Jaylen White each ended with three hits for Franklin County.
Each tournament team, including the Natchez Nationals, will advance to the Dixie Youth T-ball State Championship starting on July 7 in Philadelphia.
Moving forward, Brumfield said he knows his team has great potential.
“I’ll take our kids and play any time,” he said. “We are going to keep practicing and try to get better. We are going to try to represent Franklin County.”
Segrest hopes the Americans can ride its recent momentum.
“We have to keep working and we have to practice,” he said. “Practice makes perfect. We aren’t shooting for perfect, but we are going to try and minimize the errors. It’s just a lot of learning curve, but as long as they are learning we are getting better.”

I'm gonna make a birdhouse
But it'll also be a bird trap.
The birds will see it, fly into it, and get comfortable. and then suddenly, the door will close behind them. It'll start looking around all confused (because that's what stupid birds do), and then on a tiny LCD screen I'll come up.
"Hello, Mr Bird." I'll say, on my tiny screen. The bird will turn it's dumb head to look at me. "It seems I have you in quite the predicament."
"If you'll take notice, there is a small amount of gas coming in through your bird house vents." I'll say, the bird will look and begin pecking at the vents because it's dumb. I'll laugh maniacally and then the curtains will draw.
