【重阳节・Double Ninth Festival( 2022 date4 October) 】
or call (Chong Yang Festival or Chung Yeung Festival)observed on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar, is a traditional Chinese holiday, mentioned in writings since before the Eastern Han period (before AD 25).
According to the I Ching, nine is a yang number; the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar (or double nine) has too much yang (a traditional Chinese spiritual concept) and is thus a potentially very auspicious date. Hence, the day is also called "Double Yang Festival" (重陽節). It is customary to climb a high mountain, drink chrysanthemum liquor, and wear the zhuyu (茱萸) plant, watch chrysanthemum,Cornus officinalis. (Both chrysanthemum and zhuyu are considered to have cleansing qualities and are used on other occasions to air out houses and cure illnesses.)
The sweet and delicious Double Ninth Cake is an essential food, and the little bunting on the Double Ninth Cake is the children's favorite.
Tumblr media
Double Ninth Cake has written records in the Southern Dynasties.Rice flour, some nut materials, etc. are mostly used as raw materials for making Double Ninth Cake. The production method varies from place to place. There are mainly two kinds of baking and steaming. Five-color small colorful flags are inserted on the cake, stuffing and double sheep are printed. )", which is still popular today.

The Best Time to Travel to Hong Kong Ideal Weather Seasons
Hong Kong, with its vibrant culture, stunning skyline, and delicious cuisine, is a destination that attracts travelers year-round. However, understanding the nuances of its weather can significantly enhance your experience. From balmy summers to cool winters, each season offers a unique charm. Let's delve into the best time to visit Hong Kong based on its weather patterns.
Tumblr media
Autumn in Hong Kong is characterized by pleasant temperatures and lower humidity levels, making it one of the best times to visit. The weather is generally clear with blue skies, providing ideal conditions for outdoor activities such as hiking, sightseeing, and exploring the city's parks. Additionally, autumn marks the festival season in Hong Kong, including the Mid-Autumn Festival and the Chung Yeung Festival, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the local culture.
While winter in Hong Kong is relatively mild compared to many other destinations, temperatures can drop, especially in January and February. However, with temperatures rarely falling below 10°C (50°F), it remains comfortable for outdoor exploration. Winter also brings fewer tourists, making it a great time to enjoy popular attractions without the crowds. Don't forget to pack some layers, as temperatures can vary throughout the day.
Tumblr media
Spring heralds the arrival of warmer temperatures and blooming flowers, creating a picturesque backdrop for your travels. March and April offer comfortable weather, perfect for exploring Hong Kong's outdoor attractions such as Victoria Peak, the Tian Tan Buddha, and the outlying islands. However, humidity levels start to rise towards the end of spring, so be prepared for occasional showers and stick to lightweight clothing.
Summer in Hong Kong is characterized by hot and humid weather, with temperatures often soaring above 30°C (86°F) and high humidity levels. While this might deter some travelers, summer is an excellent time to enjoy Hong Kong's beaches and water-based activities. Additionally, summer marks the Dragon Boat Festival, where you can witness thrilling dragon boat races and indulge in traditional delicacies. To beat the heat, plan indoor activities during the hottest part of the day and stay hydrated.
Tumblr media
The best time to travel to Hong Kong largely depends on your preferences and tolerance for weather conditions. Autumn and spring offer comfortable temperatures and pleasant weather, making them ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Winter provides a quieter atmosphere and mild temperatures, while summer appeals to beach lovers and festival enthusiasts despite the heat and humidity. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Hong Kong's dynamic energy and rich cultural experiences await you year-round.

Tumblr media
9th September 2016 🗓️ : Event - North Korea The government of North Korea conducts its fifth and reportedly biggest nuclear test. World leaders condemn the act, with South Korea calling it "maniacal recklessness". "North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a country in East Asia. ❔CURIOSITIES
She Li Day shares its date with the Chung Yeung Festival, also known as Chrysanthemum Festival! 🏵️
It is customary to climb a high mountain, and to drink chrysanthemum liquor and wear the zhuyu plant - considered to have cleansing qualities and used to air out houses and cure illnesses.
Some people visit the graves of their ancestors to pay their respects by cleaning them and repainting the inscriptions. They lay out food offerings - which are eaten after the spirits have consumed its spiritual element - while burning incense.

Kong Chow:  Recalling a pioneer cemetery and a temple
Proclaimed as a “San Francisco Pioneers Remembrance,” the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, a.k.a. “Chinese Six Companies” (中華會館), sponsored a traditional Chung Yeung Festival (重陽節) ceremony at the Kong Chow funerary gate on October 14, 2021.  The event probably represented the first time that such an ancestral commemoration had occurred on the site in more than a century.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chung Yeung is traditionally observed on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar.  According to legend, the day originally celebrated the defeat of a monster and the driving away of danger.  The holiday now provides the occasion to enjoy hiking and blooming chrysanthemums.  The Chinese of Hong Kong and Macao also visit ancestral graves to clean them and repaint inscriptions, burn incense sticks, and lay out food offerings such as roast suckling pig and fruit, which are then eaten (after the spirits have consumed the spiritual element of the food). Chongyang Cake is also popular.)

The area that is now covered by the 1st and 13th fairways of the Lincoln Park Golf Course served as the Chinese section of a cemetery where tens of thousands of San Francisco’s pioneer generations from all communities had been interred between 1868 and 1909.  The Six Companies’ sponsorship of the event also served as a reminder of the historic connection that the Six Companies and its constituent district associations have with Chinese pioneer California.

In the words of the late Him Mark Lai, the dean of Chinese American historiography and a co-founder of the Chinese Historical Society of America, the “huiguan” [會館; canto: wui gwun] system evolved in response to the need of the Chinese to organize for social, economic, and political reasons.  The earliest formal organization, the huiguan, united clans or groups of people from the same region, district or districts.  Led by the merchant class, the huiguan exercised economic power and social control over its members.  The huiguan became the key components of the CCBA [“Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association” a.k.a. Chinese Six Companies].  The latter represents a higher level of organization which was prompted by a growing sense of community that crossed clan or regional lines and the need to respond to anti-Chinese agitation.” -- from Lai, Him Mark, “Historical Development of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association/Huiguan System,” Chinese America: History and Perspectives, 1987, pp. 13–51, https://himmarklai.org/digitized-articles/1986-1990/historical-development-of-the-chineseconsolidated-benevolent-association

The San Francisco Pioneers Remembrance held at perhaps the pre-1906, Chinese American community’s only remaining architectural artifact, called to mind the Kong Chow Association (岡州會館) as the former caretaking organization for the former Chinese section cemetery in Lincoln Park and one of San Francisco’s oldest Chinese temples.
The Kong Chow and its Temple
The Kong Chow traces its origin to about 1853, when the influential community leader, Yee Ahtye (a.k.a. George Athei) persuaded members of his Yee clan of Sunning, which had remained in the Sze Yup Co. (after a number of clans split off to organize today’s dominant Ning Yung Association), to finally secede. The action by the Yee clan was joined by clans from Hoiping and Enping counties after a dispute over the presidency of the Sze Yup Co. in 1862.  The resulting new association, the Hop Wo, soon challenged the merchant Ah-Tye for the custody of a piece of land on which Ah-Tye had allowed the Sze Yup Association to build a headquarters building.  Yee eventually deeded the land to a new Kong Chow Association that his fellow Sunwui merchants founded in 1866 (but the fight over this property rose to such a level that Yee and his associates were compelled to organize a secret society, the Suey Sing Tong, to enforce his decision -- a story for another day).

What San Francisco understands today as the Kong Chow Temple (岡州古廟 = mando: “Gāngzhōu Gǔmiào;” canto: “gong1 zau1 gu2 miu6”) was reputedly founded in 1849n by the Sze Yup Association.
Tumblr media
“Chinese Buddhistic Worship in San Francisco” c. 1850-1854. (Published by W.W. Kurtz & Co., from the collection of the Bancroft Library). The lede reads as follows:  “During the first part of the of April, there was a great Chinese religious festival at the Sze Yap Asylum in this city.  The Sze Yap Company is an organization of 9,000 Chinamen, residing in California for purposes of mutual benefit.  They have built a large brick house on Pine street, near Kearny, which is used as an asylum for their sick and poor, as a storehouse for their property, and as a place of business for the officers of the company. . . .
Some community historians believe that the temple was renamed the Kong Chow Clan Association in 1854.  However, this conflicts with the widely accepted founding of the Kong Chow in the mid-1860’s.  The error is understandable, as Him Mark Lai wrote in 1987:
“The fact that Kong Chow Association fell heir to the land and building of of the Sze Yup Association, including what is today known as Kong Chow Temple, later gave rise to the widely help misconception that it was the first huiguan.”

Kong Chow Temple at 512 Pine Street, SF CA, c. 1869. Photographer unknown (from the collection of Philip P. Choy).  Historian Judy Yung wrote:  “The Kong Chow Temple, built by the Sun Wui District Association in honor of Guan Gung, God of War and Literature, had a Victorian arch cornice crowning  the top of the façade and a marble slab with gilt Chinese characters bearing the temple’s name.
Whatever the correct year of its establishment, the temple operated by the Kong Chow had already achieved prominence by 1892, when Methodist pastor Frederic J. Masters counted a total of fifteen “heathen temples” in San Francisco and described the notable sites in his article, “Pagan Temples in San Francisco” for The Californian (November, 1892).

“Interior of the Temple on Pine Street, San Francisco” circa 1892.  The Kong Chow temple as its drawing appeared in article, “Pagan Temples in San Francisco” for The Californian (November, 1892).  The central figure shows that the temple was dedicated to reverence for Guan Di.
“The Kong Chau Company’s establishment on Pine street, near Kearny,” as Masters wrote at the time, “contains another temple of Kwan Kung.  It is a dark, dismal-looking place, but contains valuable sacrificial utensils, some very beautify carvings and numerous tablets bearing elegant compositions in praise of the god.  This temple is supposed to be very leng or efficacious, and so numerous are the worshippers every year, especially at the anniversaries of the idol’s birthday and canonization, that the company farms the post of temple keeper for thirteen thousand dollars per year.  It is even then a lucrative position.“ [p. 732]

The Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906 severly damaged the Kong Chow temple, along with all of the buildings in the 500-block of Pine Street, and essentially incinerated the building’s contents.

A view east down Pine Street and its intersection with Kearny Street, c. April 1906.  The Kong Chow Temple can be seen at left at 512 Pine Street.  The building’s Victorian-era arch cornice crowning  the top of the façade has been torn away probably by the seismic event.  However, marble slab and its inscribed Chinese characters bearing the temple’s name remains affixed.
The Kong Chow temple was rebuilt in 1911 at approximately the same location in the 500-block of Pine Street.
Tumblr media
The photo shows one of the entrances to the Kong Chow temple c. 1911 (by an unknown photographer).  The lower sign at left states 禁止打架 or “no fighting.”  The sign at the upper left, according to Sherm Chao, states  嚴拿白撞 [“yim na baak6 zong6”] or trespassers will be arrested.  Reader Yvonne Ng adds that  白撞 was derived from 白日撞 which means roughly “crimes committed during the day,” usually non-violent crimes such as burglaries and scams.  In later times, people also used 白撞 to refer to customers who leave without spending a penny after haggling for a long time.

As the Tin How temple was not operating at the time, historian Thomas Chinn observed in 1969 that the Kong Chow Temple was “probably the oldest in San Francisco . . . and  is now being moved to Stockton and Clay Streets.  On Pine Street the place of worship was on the top floor, the offices for the Kong Chow Association and quarters for the temple keepers on the second floor and a classroom was located on the ground floor.  Behind the old school were storage areas for lanterns and banners used in parades; also a kitchen for the cooking of tsai (monks’ meals) for festive occasions in the old days.  It also had relatively spacious courtyard and fountain.”

The relocation of the Kong Chow Temple from 520 Pine Street to the southwest corner of Stockton and Clay Streets did not occur without controversy.   In 1968 and 1969, the daughter of Yee Ah Tye (and Chan Shi Ah Tye), Charlotte Ah Tye Chang, led protests against the move and demolition of the Pine Street building.

The 95 year-old Chang’s protests proved unsuccessful.  She passed away in 1972, and the new Kong Chow Temple was erected at its present location at 855 Stockton Street in 1977.
