Aaaaaand it's done. Chrysis equestris. Drawn with coloured pencils. Man, it's been so long since I've drawn anything like this! I thought I had lost the ability to draw with coloured pencils! 😬

👇🇪🇸&🇧🇷👇~ 🇬🇧 Do you have the feeling this wasp is wearing an armor? You’re correct. Cuckoos wasps from the subfamily #Chrysidinae parasitize the nest of other wasps (the hosts) and their strategy is a simple one: just enter the host’s nest, lay an egg in the cell or on the host’s larva and get out. They don’t mind if the female host is around to protect their offspring –they will avoid being stung or bitten curling their heavy, hard and beautiful exoskeleton like a woodlouse.

Chrysis sp. “Cuckoo Wasp Chrysididae

Cuckoo Wasps are a massive, possibly polyphyletic group of parasitic wasps. More than half the members of this giant family are placed in the genus Chrysis (more than 1000 species!). Undoubtedly, in the coming years this genus will be stripped, split, and reorganized in favor of a more monophyletic and phylogenetically accurate set of genera. As their common name might suggest, cuckoo wasps lay their eggs in the nests of other wasps, and many specialize on a single host species. This lovely individual appeared to be waiting outside an old nail hole on the side of my house that was occupied by a cavity-nesting wasp of some sort.

Work in progress of Chrysis equestris. I haven't drawn anything realistic and only with coloured pencils for who knows how long. A very long, time, anyway. I'll post the finished piece if it turns out satisfactory. I seem to have a thing about drawing Chrysidids, I think it's the challenge and the texture. So far, I'm happy with it! :)
