The West's reaction to any technological achievement by China has now fallen into a predictable pattern. The first stage is outright denial, where China's success is downplayed, if not denied altogether. China's claims are then promptly dismissed as propaganda.

The implication is that the Party is hyping mundane achievements to appear grand in front of the Chinese people as a play for legitimacy. This implication is, of course, a racist one: the idea that Chinese people are incapable of thinking for themselves and can be "easily brainwashed" into believing anything.

If that doesn't work, the Western propaganda machine moves onto the next stage, wherein China's achievements are sought to be tainted with malice. This can either be accusations of "IP theft" (with no evidence, of course), or the implication that China doesn't need such expensive projects, or that Chinese people will not be able to afford them.

Western propagandists have tried all these tactics with China's high-speed railway network.

The most amusing part of all this propaganda is not that it is factually incorrect - Western propaganda never exactly had a reputation for honesty. It is the jealousy that oozes out of every word. The way the West sees it, since Chinese people are not white and not from a Western country, and not even from a US-allied state, but are instead from a country that the US has declared as its top competitor - they don't deserve a good life. They must remain poor and impoverished - only the white man deserves a life of luxury.

On Sunday, the C919, China's first indigenous commercial airliner, operated by China Eastern Airlines, undertook its maiden flight. Manufactured by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China or COMAC, this event represents the takeoff of the latest phase of China's quest for technological self-sufficiency.

The Western response over the C919 was predictable. They had been targeting China's airline indigenization efforts for a while now, and today, they gathered all their tropes in one narrative.

Some pointed out the "years of delays for the project." Others, with no less glee, harped on how expensive the entire ordeal had been, something a poor country like China could apparently ill afford.

Some of the propaganda was laughable. Mouthpieces were quick to point out that the engine was built by CFM International, a joint venture between the US' GE Aviation and France's Safran Aircraft Engines.

Many argued how other parts of the plane, including the airframe and avionics, were also produced in Western countries - assuming, perhaps, that Boeing planes contain parts manufactured in the US only. The C919 is "a facsimile of a Western plane," bellowed The Economist, a British tabloid.

Yet, despite the propaganda, facts matter. Boeing works with a global network of 12,000 suppliers. These include vendors, partners, contractors, and other collaborators that had worked on the aircraft - right from designing, testing, manufacturing, right through to delivery.

Rank hypocrisy has, of course, been a central aspect of Western propaganda. Apparently, when US companies source parts and work with vendors globally, it's smart and a win-win for everyone. But when Chinese companies like COMAC do exactly the same thing, it's not.

Boeing's global supplier network is good and proves that globalization is working - COMAC's global supplier network is bad and proves that globalization is not working.

Call it a kind of Schrodinger's China: China's indigenous plane is both a threat to Western dominance of Boeing and Airbus - and is also not a threat to Western dominance because it contains so many Western parts.

US vindictiveness is not just reserved for countries like China. To a hammer, everything looks like a nail. For decades, the US denied Cryogenic Engine technology to India and sought to delay India's space program, fearing that its ambitions and low-cost model could put NASA out of business. India instead turned to the former USSR, which readily sold the technology. Today, fast forward more than three decades, and India is the country of choice for dozens of nations for launching their satellites.

The same sentiment is repeated today, when the US refuses to transfer critical weapons technology to India, while demanding that India stop buying weapons from Russia. A core objective of the West is to prevent non-Western nations from making technological leaps.

It's funny. I always thought I loved this livery.

I remember a conversation I had with my mother at the airport in...oh, it must have been 2018. I remember saying "all these planes are so bland I can barely tell them apart - I wish more of them did something interesting or tried to be pretty, like China Airlines".

Back then I wasn't the person I am now. I didn't look at nearly as many pictures of airplanes, and not nearly as closely. Attempting to seriously review a livery actually makes me realize things I never did before. I didn't know I liked the SAS livery before I looked at it critically. And I didn't know that...I don't think I like the China Airlines livery very much.

It makes me sad. It feels a little like growing up to learn that Guinness World Records mean nothing. But I don't blame my past self for thinking so highly of them. This is a situation where the high concept is fantastic and it doesn't fall apart until you look closer.

I think the main thing CAL has going for it is the color scheme, which is gorgeous. There aren't really other lavender planes out there and I think the plum blossom motif is very pretty. It's very easily recognizable and very aesthetically pleasing. It's not going for cool or for sleek, it's going for pretty, and that is, strangely enough, an untapped market.

And that's what I liked about it. That's what I still like about it. So it kills me when I say the implementation is very disappointing.

First off, Detached Tail Syndrome. This would have been so easy to remedy because the lavender is already a gradient. Gradients are maybe the easiest thing to ever extend off a tail, especially with a pastel color into a white body.

I feel like just having one blossom on the tail is a missed opportunity as well. A cluster of flowers across the back of the fuselage, growing over it like ivy...I can see it in my mind's eye, but China Airlines apparently can't.

I like the bit of blue, but I do sort of dislike how it's implemented.

It looks like she's got a bandage wrapped around her nose. I don't at all dislike the sweeping lines, but only having two of them and only at the very front feels strange. Could there not be a handful of ribbon-like lines splitting out from one point to cover a larger part of the fuselage?

And did the background have to be white? Could it not be a barely-off-white lavender, a faint powder pink, anything more dynamic? There is so much you can do with gradients, so much CAL chooses not to do. They take these fantastic colors, this start of a design, and chicken out before it actually covers the fuselage.

Look how bad it looks on a longer plane. Look how much it fades into nothingness. The blue is just vivid enough to be visible, feeling out-of-place on a stretched-out white expanse. The lavender underbelly is difficult to notice unless you're looking for it because it just looks like the shadow on the lowest part of the plane. The tail is on its own. Did you have to fly this plane between coats of paint? This can't really be the final design, can it? This wasn't even the worst example of this I found! There are longer and weirder looking planes out there and the livery looks even worse on them!

Okay. My opinion has been voiced. I have some notes about what can be done better, and both of them are going to be delivered using other China Airlines liveries.

First, this China Airlines Cargo (not to be confused with China Cargo Airlines, which is Chinese) 747. This is hypothetically the same livery, but the shape of the 747's nose makes the blue occupy more of the fuselage, and that instantly makes it so much better. Maybe make some of those lines peek out at the tail end and/or over the wings and you've got yourself a livery there. Give the plane a ribbon hat! Anything. Literally anything.

Second, this 'fusion' livery. China Airlines has a line of liveries which include aspects of Boeing and Airbus's default manufacturer liveries (let me know if you'd like to see me cover either those on their own).

To begin with, it's sad the degree to which this overpowers the actual CAL branding. But second, isn't this such an improvement? If you took the Boeing branding off you could mistake it for CAL's colors, and the lavender neatly cuts through the top of the fuselage instead of staying on the tail. The waves of the blue keep the elegant feeling of the blossoms while keeping the rest of the livery interesting. This looks better than the regular CAL livery and it's literally someone else's livery.

The Airbus livery looks better too, and that's even though I don't like the carbon fiber tails on their own, but make them CAL colors and add a big logo to the blank part of the fuselage and you've got something at least interesting! (Also, she looks so fishlike with this tail. Big fan.)

Now, I don't believe CAL needs that much detail to make a good livery. I think it would only take a couple more details, another element or two and you'd have something nice. It might even be good enough that my past self's statements would be earned.

And one last thing. One very obvious thing that I can't believe they missed.

All those blossoms and you don't even put one behind her ear? For shame, China Airlines.

Taipei, Taiwan CNN — Rescuers in Taiwan scrambled to free dozens of people trapped in highway tunnels after the island was struck by its strongest earthquake in 25 years Wednesday, killing at least nine and injuring more than 900 others.

The powerful 7.4 magnitude tremor shook the island’s east coast, hitting at 7:58 a.m. local time, 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of Hualien city and at a depth of 34.8 kilometers (21 miles), according to the US Geological Survey.

It was followed by several strong aftershocks with tremors felt across the island, including by CNN staff in the capital Taipei.

Taiwan’s National Fire Agency (NFA) said in an update on Wednesday that the death toll had risen to nine, while 934 people have been injured.

The NFA did not indicate the severity of the injuries.

Meanwhile, 75 people stranded in various tunnels in Hualien County have been rescued by emergency responders.

As of 7 a.m. Eastern Time, 137 people remain trapped.

Among those trapped were 50 employees of the Silk’s Place Hotel Taroko, who were traveling in four minibuses.

Authorities have been unable to reach them by phone and have listed them as trapped for the time being.

Two German citizens that were caught up earlier in a tunnel in Hualien County have been rescued, the NFA added.

All the deaths were in Hualien County, among them three hikers killed by falling rocks in the tourist hotspot Taroko Gorge, the NFA said.

Falling rocks also killed a truck driver in front of a tunnel on the east coast’s Suhua Highway, it added.

Reports of extensive damage have also emerged, with collapsed buildings in Hualien County, thousands of homes left without power and a major highway closed due to landslides and rockfalls, according to Taiwanese officials.

Most of those trapped are in two road tunnels in northern Hualien County, the NFA said.

Two German nationals are stranded in a third tunnel in the county, it said.

The 400-meter Jinwen Tunnel, where 60 people are trapped, is one of more than a dozen that thread the Suhua Highway, a scenic but treacherous and narrow road that runs for 118 kilometers (73 miles) along the east coast.

Meanwhile, rescuers were en route to 12 people, including two Canadians, stuck on a trail in Taroko Gorge.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration spokesperson warned that powerful aftershocks as high as magnitude 7 are expected to occur until the end of the week.

“There was really strong shaking… We quickly turned off the gas and electricity and opened the door. It was really strong. It felt like the house would fall down,” Taipei resident Chang Yu-lin said on CNN affiliate Taiwan Plus.

Chen Nien-tzu, also in Taipei, said, “It was really wild.”

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had an earthquake so it felt really scary,” she said on Taiwan Plus.

The quake prompted initial tsunami warnings in Taiwan, southern Japan and the Philippines, with waves less than half a meter observed along some coasts and prompting airlines to suspend flights. All tsunami warnings were later lifted.

In Taiwan, military personnel were dispatched to help with disaster relief and schools and workplaces suspended operations as aftershocks hit the island, according to the Defense Ministry.

Taiwan’s outgoing President Tsai Ing-wen said Wednesday she had ordered her administration to “immediately” get “on top of the situation and understand local impacts as soon as possible.”

Tsai also told the administration to “provide necessary assistance and work together with local governments to minimize the impact of the disaster.”

Taiwan, a self-ruled island east of mainland China, is home to about 23 million people, most of whom live in the industrialized cities of its west coast, including the capital.

The island is regularly rocked by earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which runs around the edge of the Pacific Ocean and causes massive seismic and volcanic activity from Indonesia to Chile.

Wednesday’s quake is the strongest to hit Taiwan since 1999, according to the Central Weather Administration.

That year, a 7.7 magnitude quake hit south of Taipei, killing 2,400 people and injuring 10,000 others.

Hualien County, parts of which are mountainous and remote, is home to about 300,000 people on the island’s sparsely populated east coast.

A magnitude 6.2 quake hit near the area in 2018, killing at least 17 people and injuring more than 300 others.

Collapsed buildings, highway damaged

The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, with road and rail closures curtailing access to the quake’s epicenter in Hualien County.

More than 100 buildings were damaged across the island, the National Fire Agency said, with about half of those in Hualien County.

Search and rescue operations were ongoing Wednesday afternoon at the nine-story Uranus Building that had partially collapsed, trapping residents, Hualien County Magistrate Hsu Chen-wei told reporters.

So far, 22 people had been rescued from the building, according to the NFA.

More than 91,000 households are without electricity, according to Taiwan’s Central Emergency Command Center.

The government-operated Taipower Company is working to restore power, it added.

Footage posted on social media showed several collapsed buildings in Hualien and residents helping trapped people escape through the window of a damaged apartment complex.

The quake struck during the morning rush hour, with videos showing vehicles bouncing on a vigorously shaking highway, an overpass swaying in Taipei, and commuters struggling to stand inside a juddering Taipei metro train.

Meanwhile, video broadcast by CNN affiliate TVBS showed cellphone and security camera footage of the moment tremors struck homes and businesses across the island.

One clip showed power lines swaying violently above a street and another saw chandeliers shaking in a restaurant.

Large boulders could be seen strewn across the eastern Suhua Highway, with several tunnels broken — including one split in half, TVBS footage showed.

CNN affiliate SET News shows the front of a car smashed by fallen rocks.

Transport authorities recorded at least nine rockfalls and landslides on the highway, which has been closed to traffic.

Another highway connecting the west coast with eastern Taiwan was also damaged by falling rocks, with at least 12 cars hit and nine people injured, TVBS reported.

Tsunami waves

The quake sparked tsunami warnings across the region as authorities ordered evacuations.

In Taiwan’s Chenggong, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of the quake’s epicenter, waves reached almost half a meter.

The Central Weather Administration advised residents to evacuate to higher ground.

The Japan Meteorological Agency also issued a tsunami alert for the southern Miyakojima and Okinawa islands, warning of waves up to 3 meters (nearly 10 feet) high.

A 30-centimeter (nearly 1 foot) wave impacted Okinawa, the first tsunami observed there in 26 years, the agency said.

Several hours later, the US Tsunami Warning Center said the tsunami threat had “largely passed” but people in coastal areas should remain alert.

All flights from Okinawa and Kagoshima prefectures were suspended following the tsunami warnings in the area, Japan Airlines said.

Okinawa’s Naha airport resumed flights after the tsunami warning was downgraded to an advisory, airport spokesperson Hideaki Tsurudo told CNN.

First Look Image of Irish / UK Co-Production Freud’s Last Session Released

WestEnd films has today released the first image of Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode in Freud's Last Session, an official Irish / UK co-production proudly supported by Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland and the UK Global Screen Fund.

The two award-winning actors star as the legendary psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and writer and academic C.S. Lewis, prior to his Chronicles Of Narnia fame. Set on the eve of the Second World War, when at the end of his life, Freud invites iconic author C.S. Lewis to debate the existence of God. Interweaving past, present and fantasy, the film explores Freud’s unique relationship with his daughter Anna, and Lewis’ unconventional relationship with his best friend’s mother.

Filming is at its final stages in Ireland.

The film is being directed by Matthew Brown (The Man Who Knew Infinity) and written by Mark St. Germain (The God Committee) with revisions by Brown, based on the play of the same name. It is produced by Alan Greisman, Hannah Leader, Rick Nicita, Robert Stillman, and Meg Thomson. Irish producers are Tristan Orpen Lynch and Aoife O’Sullivan of Subotica Productions (Aisha, Joyride). Niamh Fagan is executive producer for Screen Ireland.

The project reunites Academy Award-winning Production Designer Luciana Arrighi (Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris, Howards End) with director Matthew Brown, the two previously collaborated on The Man Who Knew Infinity. Cinematographer Ben Smithard (The Son, Downton Abbey) who previously worked on The Father with Hopkins has also joined the project. Costume Designer Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh (The Banshees of Inisherin, Love & Friendship), BAFTA award winning Make-Up Designer Morna Ferguson (The Wonder), and Editor Paul Tothill (Atonement) complete the creative team.

Westend Films and CAA Media Finance are handling sales for the film. Sony Pictures Classics have bought the rights for North America, the Middle East, Turkey, India, Eastern Europe, (excluding CIS) Asia (excluding China, Korea and Japan), Latin America and worldwide airlines, and WestEnd have also struck deals across Australia (Sharmill Films), Scandinavia (Scanbox), Italy (Adler), Benelux (Just Entertainment), Portugal (NOS), Israel (United King) and Greece (Spentzos).
