so in my routine scrounging of youtube for new weird political music to play on repeat while browse tumblr, i came across the tsinghua university thing where they sing the internationale in a bunch of languages to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the CPC and like, it's making me somewhat emotional for reasons that are not at all related to the video itself (which extremely cringy and also obviously autotuned).

the thing is like, uh, on a personal level i really want to see china do well (what do i mean by "well"? what do i mean by "china"? idk). because, like, about half of my irl friends are from china. and every negative news story i see, whether it's "US heightens cold war 2.0 tensions" or "PRC cracks cracks down on X, Y, or Z", or even just following argumate and getting the impression that china's economic prospects are looking pretty bad, makes me just kinda sad and anxious. i want to see relations US-china relations improve, i want greater ease of movement and cultural flow between both countries, i want to not have to worry that someday my friends will have their social credit score docked because of associating with me (i have no idea how realistic this fear is, but i don't think international monitoring of the internet for this kind of thing by the CPC is out of the question in the near future). and i want to think that material conditions over there will continue to improve instead of starting to go down or just stagnate.

of course, i want all this for every country in the world, but my point is that in the case of china (like in the case of the US, where i live) it's less of an abstract principled thing and more of a concrete thing, ya know? anyway.

and the general picture that i get is that, uh, deng did an insane miracle and now xi is pulling every dumb move in the book to unintentionally undo it in service of maintaining his own power. and that makes me really, uh, mad? bothered?
