UN Supports Chad's Transition to Prosperity

  United Nations Commits to Partnering with Chad for a Prosperous Future

In a high-level side event at the United Nations General Assembly, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed emphasized the importance of continued support and partnership with Chad as the nation approaches the final phase of its transition towards constitutional order. The event, titled "The journey towards constitutional order in Chad: Invitation to a meeting of exchange and reinforcement of partnerships," brought together stakeholders to assess Chad's progress and challenges.  

Chad's Transition Nearing Completion

Deputy Secretary-General Mohammed described this moment as crucial for Chad, its regional partners, and the international community. The country's transition, marked by significant progress, is now approaching its last phase, characterized as the "final sprint" by Mohammed. The Deputy Secretary-General acknowledged the challenges Chad has faced during this journey, emphasizing the importance of honest discussions and the articulation of needs and priorities by the Chadian authorities.   Addressing Regional and Global Pressures Highlighting the context of regional and global pressures, Mohammed underscored Chad's role in accommodating hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing violence in Sudan. This has added considerable strain to the nation's already limited resources, further compounded by the crisis in Sudan. In her remarks, the Deputy Secretary-General expressed admiration for Chad's generosity in hosting refugees.   The United Nations Commitment Mohammed reiterated the UN's steadfast support for Chad throughout its transition. She noted that this commitment aligns with Chad's articulated needs and priorities, as outlined in the new Cooperation Framework set to begin in January. The United Nations remains dedicated to realizing both the African Union's Agenda 2063 and the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.   Supporting Chad's Transition The Deputy Secretary-General acknowledged that a substantial portion of Chad's transition efforts have been borne by the country itself. Additionally, she commended the work of the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Central Africa, Abdou Abarry, and regional actors like the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) for supporting an inclusive, peaceful, and timely return to constitutional order. The UN's support extends to advancing the Doha Peace agreement, promoting disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration, and assisting Chad in its efforts to clear landmines from its territory. The UN is also actively involved in enhancing social cohesion, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), providing humanitarian assistance, and promoting human rights in Chad.   A Call for Unwavering Support Deputy Secretary-General Mohammed concluded by emphasizing the critical need for ongoing, unwavering support for Chad, particularly in a region marked by turmoil, humanitarian crises, and climate change challenges.
