The relevance and importance of these locations
These locations are where i recorded some of my videos and images. I go past these streets everyday, whether to go into town, to see family, to see friends or to go to work. they are shortcuts that i have used for years. they have become routes i have taken for years and still take. There routes that have become familiar to me but with time, I have not recognised the changes that i are occurring in and around these areas. until now.
Some of these addresses have personal relevance to my life as well, like in the 60s/70s by grandad worked in the foundries and factories, fixing and clearing loads of different industrial machines in and around Rolf Street and Soho Way which goes all the way up to Alma street and Fawdry street (you can still see today some of the old factory buildings in the areas). but most have been demolished, to be turned into unaffordable housing or boarded up and abandoned.
Also with Health Street was a place where in the 80s and 90s my uncles and dad used to work, it was one of the first jobs many people in my family had taken after coming to Birmingham, its opposite the dudley road hospital, it used to be a massive industrial area and that has now had at least 90% of it demolished and left as waste ground, for fly tipping, vandalism and also home for hard drug use (needle using) and a homeless community. (all of this literally opposite the hospital!) its all waiting for a new development to built.
Through doing this project have i really seen a change in my own part of the city, i have seen the knock on affects that the gentrification the city centre has had on the surrounding areas. I do feel its erasing a lot history and making way for cheap construction to sell at extremely unaffordable prices. its a major transitioning period that i have recorded, its not only potential archive stock footage for decades to come but also footage that can be seen now to get people to see and realise whats actually changing around them. it can be a tool to understanding and recognising the changes that are going on not only in the city but in there local areas as well.
These are some of the roads where i have scopped out and reccyed several times to try and get the best visuals that show these changes, the combination of the roads, the buildings(factories, garages, flats, houses, offices and houses under construction) and cars shows a Birmingham that might be forgotten, that could in limbo, (between the old and the new future plans).
Each address i pass everyday, to and from town, I have taken several different images and video of and from these addresses:
