Research Collection of Climate Effects on the Arctic Tundra

For my final project, I chose to study the global warming effects on plant life in the arctic tundra. For me personally, I've always loved studying the tundra, and it –along with the boreal forest—are my go-to areas to watch nature documentaries on. As someone who is studying environmental sustainability, and has always been fascinated by anything nature related, I've always enjoyed the macro-topic of evolution. There is actually an ongoing joke between my friends and I (which is a bit stupid) that I’m a reincarnation of Charles Darwin. This is because I've always been the “nature nerd friend” in my group and I always enjoyed talking about evolution the most. But, more specifically, his work “On the Origin of Species” was published on my birthday, making “Evolution Day” my birthday (November 24th). More specifically to the tundra, I really enjoy how its harsh environments facilitate interesting evolution. On one hand, you have the lack of big predatory mammals, because the environment is so harsh that it barely supports small herbivores. However, on the other hand, you have the really interesting plant life. More specifically, the fact that they have interesting root systems. For example, with the constant low temperatures present here, there is a layer of frozen ground beneath the soil known as “permafrost.” This prevents the roots of plants from growing any deeper than the uppermost soil layer. Also, the arctic tundra is known for having soil with very low levels of Nitrogen, so plants need large roots to gather as much as possible. These two combine and force the plant life to have very large root systems that are essentially smashed into a thin layer in the top of the soil (Björk).

Another major factor in why I chose this project was the fact that the arctic tundra is essentially a “no-man’s land,” meaning that not many people go and/or live here. This makes studying this area particularly useful, as you don’t have to worry about human interference in your data collected. In environmental science, this pristine quality of land is highly sought after. In like manner, this lack of people (and cold weather) leads to a major lack of science taking part in this area of the world. So, for anyone willing to face the cold and study here, you are likely to be free to choose from a wide range of topics to study here, while also providing much needed data for climate change science.

Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed that global warming is actually offering a few positive effects on this area. When talking about climate change, generally it can be depressing as most places are facing constant negatives effects. However, in a place that’s so used to being so cold all year round, warming can actually open up some room for improvement. For example, some interesting ones that I found in my research were that vascular plants were seen with increasing sexual reproduction. This opens up the potential for habitat range increases, as well as the option for more genetic variability as new plants can encounter one-another (Klady 2010). Another positive effect mentioned was that the steady increase in temperature opens up the option for an earlier start to the growing season which can be extremely beneficial to plants. And, like mentioned earlier, this warming allows the warming of soil which can allow plants to grow longer root systems in order to gain more access to the Nitrogen that they need. Even though I mentioned several positive effects, you still seem to always find negatives when talking about climate change. For example, even if some plants are able to quickly adapt and increase their habitat range, others are being forced to migrate to northern latitudes in order to get closer to the climate they have grown used to. This can be extremely harmful, as migrant plants are likely to be outcompeted with plants that have already become well established in the northern latitudes (Bjorkman 2016).

Throughout this paper, Björk talks about the effects of warming on root mass distribution, root morphology, and microbial activity in organic and mineral soil layers in two dry alpine plant ecosystems in northern Sweden. For starters, the cold climate throughout the arctic tundra restricts the Nitrogen that plants need to grow. In order to combat this, plants must develop large root systems in order to absorb as much Nitrogen as they can from the soil. However, due to the frozen soil slightly underground known as “permafrost,” the plants must develop shallower root systems, as they cannot grow through the permafrost. According to Björk, this makes roots extremely important components in this environment, creating an element of competition that is greater below-ground than above. As a direct result of climate change, temperatures in the arctic are rising rapidly and are predicted to warm even more over the next century. Even though the effects seem so prevalent here, he points out that there is a heavy lack of literature done on this area. He acknowledges that studies on calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium increasing root density and warming effects on fine-root biomass have been done, however very few focus on the variables in a climate change context. For their study specifically, they found that in ambient warming, the total root mass was nearly twice as high in the dry meadow environment compared to the dry heath one. Also, their data pointed toward annual average air temperature increases that have led to increases in the length of the growing season in this area (Latnjajaure Field Station, Sweden).

In this study, Bjorkman et al. studied the phenology of four arctic plant species and how they responded to experimental and ambient warming in two habitat types over a 21 year period. These two study sites were at the Alexandria Fiord lowland in Canada. After the data was collected, they cross analyzed it with long-term environmental records so that they could interpret the changes to temperature, snowmelt date, and growing season on phenological patterns. Surprisingly, the results they collected were not at all what they had expected. Even though flowering had occurred earlier for these plants in experimental warming, the unmanipulated plants in the ambient warming showed no change at all over the 21 years. They believe that it is likely because of significantly delayed snowmelt over this period from higher than average snowfall. Also, directly from Bjorkman, “These seemingly contradictory results can best be explained by disparate effects of warming and snowfall on the timing of snowmelt. Winter snow accumulation increased substantially between 1993 and 2013 at the nearest permanent weather station, likely as an indirect effect of atmospheric warming.” In contrast, they found that temperatures had increased at a rate of about 0.52 °C per decade over the two decades. And, they talked about how rate at which temperature changes is especially high in the arctic, making these plants particularly susceptible to problems. However, we have relatively little data in this area, so we are struggling to understand these processes.

In this article, Bjorkman talks about the negative effects on southern tundra plants in the high Arctic as a result of rapidly rising temperatures. In her research, she explains that this warming causes plants to have latitudinal and elevational range shifts in order to track down the climate that they are used to. However, this causes migrants to face problems as they are not as well adapted to these environments as native species, and they may get outcompeted. For their research, they experimentally warmed two areas in the Canadian High Arctic in order to analyze these warming effects. Similarly to their hypothesis, they found that local populations of plants generally had higher survival and more numbers overall than those who were foreign, regardless of their experimental warming. This signals that the local populations have more of a “home-side advantage,” suggesting that environmental factors other than temperature could hinder the establishment of immigrant individuals from southern areas. Interestingly however, they acknowledged that another study had recently been done over Thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana) populations in Europe, because the northernmost population actually demonstrated a lower fitness than immigrants from southern populations. This was expected to be because of differing temperatures than historical averages.

In this study, Doak and Morris discuss the same topic of geographical range shifts poleward, or shifts to higher elevations, to compensate for climate changes in temperature. In this study, they focus on a six-year project to look at two species of tundra plants and their latitudinal ranges in western North America. They focused on demographic changes specifically near the southern range limits of these populations. They talk about how tundra plants are so adapted to cold environments, that they are easy indicators for a natural/biotic response to climate change and global warming. Their results matched their hypothesis that the southern populations would show lower survival, however they did encounter other interesting data. They found that these same southern populations also showed an increase in individual growth, likely due to the warming temperatures, and the onset of an earlier and longer growing season. Even though they are seeing some positive effects, they still believe that constant warming will inevitably lead to negative effects. These positive changes are only expected to be seen in “warmer” years, however they expect an onset of negative effects as these years start to become the “warmest,” more extreme change years. Finally, they believe that more data must be collected on this topic in order to understand these long-term, range-wide processes.

For this article, Klady et al. found extremely interesting information regarding arctic tundra plant reproduction patterns as a result of long-term experimental warming. During this experiment, they studied experimental warming effects over a 12 year period in the High Arctic. They used what are called Open-top chambers, or OTCs, that will experimentally increase the temperature by 1-2 °C throughout the growing season. This data collected pointed to the idea that warming effects increased sexual reproduction in vascular plants of most species (specifically shrubs and graminoids). This data showed “more consistently positive and to a greater degree in polar oasis compared with polar semi-desert vascular plant communities.” This data supports their hypothesis that long-term global warming may enhance sexual reproduction in tundra plants of the High Arctic, and they even believe that this could lead to an increase in plant cover throughout the area. Moreover, they point out that this could be very beneficial to other species that may depend on these plants. For example, an increase in vegetation would lead to more food options for herbivores in the area. Also, an increase in overall vegetation would lead to an increasing carbon sink that would be very beneficial to the environment. Finally, this increased sexual reproduction is expected to increase biodiversity throughout the species as they would be prone to more genetic variability for their offspring as they are exposed to new plants. This would then lead to a potential higher survival rate of these offspring as they genetically select traits that would be more beneficial to them to survive in this changing environment.

In this article, Macander talks about the creation and use of “Ecosystem maps,” which are continuous field maps that act as a tool in order to study and assess changes to wildlife habitat. More specifically, they talk about what they refer to as plant functional types, or PFTs, across Alaska’s North Slope. They gathered data and sampled 225 plots across the area, and separated them into nine different vegetation PFTs (example: low deciduous shrub, dwarf evergreen shrub, sedge, lichen, etc.). After that, they created 73 “spectral predictors” from satellite observations and five environmental predictors (summer temperature, climatological snow-free date, etc.) and used them alongside a forest data-mining algorithm to generate the model cover of PFTs. Overall, this article was very science heavy and difficult to understand, however it pointed to extremely useful options in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in order to more easily study large land cover areas with the visual aid of a map. These studies help cross with areas in Geography, and Biogeography more specifically, in order to analyze these plant types on spatial and temporal scales. Some interesting information that they collected was that they found that about 6 years of Landsat data was needed in order to more accurately create accurate spectral/environmental conditions for these models. Also, they found that moving from their 30 meter pixels (I believe this is raster data) to smaller 10 meter pixels in order to move forward and create even more accurate models.

In this study, Wang focuses on the study of leaf decomposition (litter decomposition) of two dominant plant species (Eriophorum vaginatum and Betula nana) in northeastern Siberia. They predicted that global warming temperatures would accelerate this decomposition process and lead to a different composition of vegetation. However, this wasn’t the only thing that the study focused on. They also figured that it would be important to study the root decomposition as well and look for trends. This is because, as I mentioned in a previously, root mass is extremely important to plants in the arctic tundra due to the lack of Nitrogen. Luckily enough for them, this created “better” data as a result. This is because their data pointed to very similar leaf/litter decomposition. However, they found that there were differences between the root decomposition between the two species. Also, interestingly, they found that Phosphorus limits the litter decomposition. Another point they found is that the plant has a “home-field advantage” in an area where it is dominant, getting faster decomposition as a result. This is interesting, as most models predict that climate changes will lead to accelerated decomposition, however they claim that their data points to the fact that this may be counteracted by the expected expansion of shrubs. However, if there is an increase in decomposition, this would lead to an expected shift from a carbon sink to a carbon source within the area. This is drawn out as extremely complex, because on one hand you have warming climates leading to better productivity throughout the vegetation, increasing its carbon sink. However, on the other hand, you have these higher temperatures leading to accelerated decomposition which increases carbon emission from the soil and inevitably leads to a shift to a carbon source.

In this article, Wang studies the climate warming effects on above and below ground responses to soil heating and fertilization on four tundra plants (grasses, sedges, deciduous shrubs, and evergreen shrubs) in northeastern Siberia. Again, Wang points at this common theme that global warming is increasing at a much faster rate in the arctic than the global average. However, this shift in warmer temperatures and increased growing season may actually lead to more access and availability of nutrients throughout the soil, as plants can access deeper soil with their roots. These two highly contrasting shifts are expected to change composition of vegetation, and are both important studying points throughout tundra research. For this study in particular, they tested experimental warming and increases in nutrient availability by, one, running heating cables through the ground to promote seasonal thawing, and, two, spreading “slow-release NPK fertilizer” to act as natural nutrients. Their data found that this experimental soil heating led to increases in biomass for the sedges in particular, as they have the deepest roots of these four plant types. However, they found no evidence of increases for the other three. For experimental nutrient increase, they found that all plants had increased biomass. The two dwarf shrub types had the most above-ground response as they tend to be plants with more shallow root systems. And, grasses seemed to have the most overall (above and below ground) response. They explain that this research points to the idea that warming temperatures affecting thawing depth on permafrost will only be beneficial to sedges. However, increases in nutrient availability would be more evenly beneficial across the spectrum.

For this study, Wipf, Stoeckli, and Bebi, covered the broader topic of environmental response to climate warming on snow and on the four most common dwarf-shrub species in this alpine community. Particularly, changes to the snow depth and the snowmelt timing. This study, conducted in the Swiss Alps over a two year period, found that there is a decreasing snow-to-rain ratio and that the onset of snowmelt is advancing. Their research found that these increasing temperatures led to a change in security for plants and their adaption to frost. This is because the higher temperatures caused these plants to face far fewer moments where they were particularly susceptible to frost damage where they could’ve adapted to gain “winter-frost hardiness.” They found that this negative effect actually outweighed the positive effects (being the longer growing season). Subsequently, they found that in three of the four species studied, their above ground growth was hindered after advanced snowmelt. More specifically, Loiseleuria procumbens, “a specialist of wind exposed sites with little snow,” was the one who actually benefited from the earlier snowmelt. Overall, they explained that these changes to snow in this winter climate could have varying effects on the plants. And, they encourage changes in snow cover characteristics to be added to future studies, as they should be taken into account as a variable for change if the other studies are also focusing on creating future models and predicting climate change effects.

The final article, done by Wookey, talked about the options to create more accurate modeling and future predictions on tundra plants. He explained that this is actually very difficult, as you must have a vast understanding of these plants’ “ecophysiology” and their response to many different environmental changes. He talked about many different models that are being used as predictors. For starters, the one mentioned in some of my other articles, experimental warming. He talked about how they often suffer accuracy due to shorter time scales and “breadth of deployment.” However, he still finds these extremely valuable as they allow scientists the option to test their hypotheses on climate warming changes directly with a controlled environment. He also says that this model allows for valuable information on things such as phenology, growth, reproduction, and environmental responses. Moreover, he compares this common model with two others. Firstly, he compared this with the use of “transects and gradients (‘space-for-time substitution).” He said that this model is usually beneficial if you’re focusing on an end-point of change, but with environmental science today, we are focusing more on ever-changing climates, so this model may not prove useful. The third model he discussed was the “multi-proxy paleo-environmental approaches.” He said that this model is more beneficial if you are talking about past climate change, but, again, the newer models want to focus on future changes. Overall, he thinks that environmental manipulation model may be the most appropriate model currently, however there are still flaws to be addressed. These include: failure to address biological processes on a larger evolutionary timescale, failure to focus on larger spatial coverage, and finally, common failure to overlap multiple environmental change drivers.

Kawai GX2 Grand Piano Review & Demo - Millennium III Action with ABS-Carbon, Classic Salon Grand

Introduction

The Kawai GX2 grand piano is a piano that creatively blends traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation and technology. Whether it's straightforward improvements to the lid props and soft fall systems, to the more complex improvements in touch control with the carbon fiber Millennium III action, Hard Finish coatings on the music rack, or steel-reinforced body parts like the keybed and keyslip, this instrument is one of the most popular choices amongst well regarded home and institutional grand pianos on the market today.

Kawai GX-2 Grand Piano Review Video Transcription

Hi, everybody, and welcome to another piano review. I'm Stu Harrison, we're here of course at Merriam Pianos, just outside of Toronto, Canada. We're in our beautiful Oakville showroom today and we'll be taking a close look at the Kawai GX2 BLAK, an instrument that has had an enormous impact on the institutional piano industry, and really the home piano industry as well. Amongst new pianos in this category, there are a multitude of revolutionary things going on throughout the design of this instrument, including the action, pinblock, key surfaces, lid prop stick, finish, and even the tapered solid spruce soundboard.

The GX2 is the current 5"11" grand piano from Japan in Kawai's premium category (the very top level is Shigeru Kawai, which is hand made and about twice the price of the GX line). It's a classic size, and is the most popular size for most companies that produce a 6' piano. It was preceded by the RX2, a 5'10" which was the first from Kawai to include vertically-laminated bridges and the Millennium III action. But unlike most product evolutions, the GX is devolved from the Shigeru Kawai SK2, rather than evolved from the RX2. In fact, the RX was discontinued around 2012/2013, its lineage is more apparent in the current GL line than anything else. So the GX is rolling off the line at their Ryuyo factory in Hamamatsu Japan, which is where they also produce other Kawai Grands from the GL, GX lines, and some of the Boston grand models for Steinway.

Tone and Harmonic Components

The GX2 has such a colorful, rich, lush tone, and unlike some of the previous Kawai piano models where you had a lot of upper partials and a very strong fundamentals, some of those warmer mid-tones maybe didn't come out as strongly. And often you got a compressed EQ curve out of these pianos - almost like an MP3 vs CD or Vinyl tone. It was warm, but some people heard it as a harsh sound. The GX has a beautiful tonal curve to it. You've got nice, lush, mid partials, the upper treble, it's all very well balanced. And the other great thing is there's very little mechanical inertia in the sound. So in other words, very responsive, the instrument comes alive, even at very, very low dynamic ranges.

It's no surprise that this instrument is finding a huge audience with the institutional market as well as the home market. Even performance venues, where you've got a need for affordable quality with good projection, are liking this line. And the majority of players enjoying the GX are young professionals or advanced students looking for versatility, consistency, and dynamism. An instrument that is really going to give us the widest palette possible so we can figure out how to use all of those colors. That's what pushes us as players, as artists to get better, is to be given more tools and figure out how to use them. These qualities are a given at $100,000 budgets. You can most certainly achieved that if you look hard at the $50,000 price level. When you get down into the $30,000 range, that becomes slim pickings to really have an instrument that you can truly describe as giving you a superb tonal depth to play with, something that at least lands tonally in the same range as a concert grand, and not break the bank.

Another major component which is contributing to the GX's tone is the fact that we've got a vertically laminated bridge.

Vertically laminated bridges are features that something that you find on pianos like a Steinway, you find it on Bechsteins, and Faziolis have really beautifully complex bridges. And the whole idea there is that you're trying to take all of the frequencies and their harmonics that are flowing through the string and get them down onto that soundboard. And of course, one type of wood is never going to deliver the full spectrum of tone without biasing it in some way. So, you've got multiple laminations on the bridge delivering different parts of the tone to the soundboard. You've got a tapered soundboard on this, which again, is a premium feature that you often find concert instruments but it's a little less usual in this price range. And you've got a hard rock maple, combined with the mahogany inner rim, which of course is delivering a lot of projection, a lot of rigidity, a lot of nice mid-tone projection, but that mahogany warms it up a little bit. And so, you get a very interesting mix of both this lower bloom to the tone, but you've also got this nice mid-ranged kind of laser beam thing that a lot of people would normally associate with a Steinway.

I think that's where the GX series grand pianos have really stepped up to the plate and helped bridge the divide between what normally would be an exceptionally well built mass-produced piano, which I would describe the RX or the Yamaha C-Series is this workhorse instrument that didn't require a lot of maintenance, lasts decades and decades, and produces a consistent tone. The gap occurs between those options and having to double your budget to get into something that really truly gave you that lush palette that you'd normally associate with a concert instrument. So it finds a nice halfway point.

The last few points I'll make on the harmonic features of the piano are the agraffes - there to help reduce distortion and improve clarity in the mid and upper ranges, and the stretcher bar - there to improve cabinet resonance.

GX2 Key Action and Feel

Now, I did mention that we're going to talk about the action. And so, we are definitely going to pull out and on the GX, they're using the Millennium III action, the Ninja edition. Now, this is a slight update to the Millennium III action with ABS-Carbon that they've had for quite a few years. One of the notable features that they have on the GX is this extended key stick length. And this is something that they've brought out in the GL, they brought out on some of the K-Series upright pianos, the GX and the SK and that is this extra-long key stick that they're putting on there to better simulate the type of dynamic feel that you get on a concert instrument or at least a 7-foot instrument. It's a simple yet effective innovation that reduces the transitional effect that you have, if this is your practice instrument and you wind up having to do recitals on a 9-foot or in-studio on a 7-foot, this doesn't feel worlds apart, just kind of a nice thing. It also reduces the differences in weight and speed between the front of the key and the rear.

There are several other aspects besides the keysticks that make this action very fluid, consistent, and versatile. For one, It's going to feel slightly deeper than what you'd normally get on a European action. For many people, what that does is it sort of increases the level of control they have, particularly in the lower dynamic ranges. And, of course, Kawai as rather famously or infamously switched from wood components to composite action parts for a lot of the repetition components. For anyone who's been in the industry for several decades can tell you that Kawai took a lot of flack for making this change. They became an easy punching bag for a lot of competitor companies to come in and say, "Oh, it's plastic, it's cheap." or crazy claims like "it's made of recycled garbage bags." And I've heard a multitude of very interesting things said about this composite action. Unfortunately, the facts of the matter is that this has been shown to be an incredibly easy to own consistent action. And one where I think a lot of people have appreciated the fact that you're having to regulate it less. And especially in a climate like this, the piano plays the same on a hot sweaty day, as it does in a cool dry day. And that's, it's just a nice convenience, a nice musical convenience to have your piano feel the same regardless of what's going on with the weather.

Looking at the action from the hammer back, we've got double felted hammers with mahogany cores, we've got the mechanics in the repetition section of the action which is made of the composite. And as mentioned in the introduction, Kawai does a number of other things in its key bed to really reinforce the NEOTEX keys and make sure that we've got maximum energy flowing through the action and finally reaching the string.

Cabinetry and Finishes

The GX2, like most of the other grand piano models in the GX line, have a blend of contemporary and traditional lines and influences in the exterior design. Despite being a Swedish lass from a country with much of its land mass in the Arctic Circle, I fundamentally struggle with the cold! Another helpful cosy investment to get you through these cold winter days are these quick-drying, super soft and ultra comfortable thermal base layers. The skin is our bodies’ largest single organ which, if you’re training every day, can get pretty dry in this bitter cold, and will be in need of some TLC. I recently re-discovered Aesop on my trip to Sydney (full blog posts forthcoming!) and have been obsessed since. It’s an Australian home-grown company which has branched out globally; I adore their packaging, and all the products are exceptional and differentiated… but if I could only pick one I’d suggest the utterly delicious-smelling Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm. The botanical oils and skin-softening ingredients leave my skin feeling nourished and refreshed – and there is something totally invigorating about the ingredients’ aroma, so much so that I went overboard and snapped up the whole range. Oh, and I also LOVE the packaging of that mouthwash!!

ITEM 10) Woolrich Coat – ‘W’s Military Parka’

Finally, if you really want to spoil that special someone this is a coat that will keep you warm all winter in the urban city or for apres ski purposes! It’s a little off the beaten track of Canada Goose / Moncler, but I absolutely love it’s furnace-like warmth and bold features for these frosty times of the year. Pick one up HERE.
