WHAT COULD BE FLUTING BETTER?
A medley of the two "choreographically abused" showtunes from Copacabana - "Dancin' Fool" and "Ay Caramba" - all done in CHARACTER SHOES! AND THE DANCERS ARE DUTCH! Not that I'm against dance comps, but a lot of routines to either song...

Now is probably a good time to mention that Barry Manilow, songwriter for Don Bluth's Thumbelina and The Pebble and The Penguin as well as popular singer-songwriter in his own right, has a Broadway musical coming out this year. It is titled "Harmony" and is about the true story of the Comedian Harmonists, an internationally famous German singing group before World War II. Half of their members were Jewish, making their careers increasingly difficult under the Nazi regime.
The musical has been in the works since the 90s and debuts on Broadway in November. It's book and lyrics are by Bruce Sussman and the cast includes Chip Zien, Sierra Boggess and Julie Benko.
The cast album has already released.

Harmony
Tumblr media
HARMONY by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman directed by Warren Carlyle: It seems distressingly timely in the current political climate to see a musical about the real-life vocal group The Comedian Harmonists, who were suppressed by the Nazis in the early 1930s because half of them were Jewish (and in this production, two are gay or bi) and they performed Jewish music. It’s not that we don’t need to repeat history’s lessons about bigotry until none exists. It’s that the reflection of the play’s action in the current world can leave one a little shell-shocked. Fortunately, the play and production are worth it. Narrated by the incomparable Chip Zien as “Rabbi” Josef Roman Cycowski, the last of the group to die, the production deals with a great deal of regret as Zien looks back on the mistakes he made in dealing with the growing Nazi threat and, by extension, the guilt of people who stand by and do nothing while evil takes over a country. Zien is both funny (he plays a variety of other characters the group encounters) and intensely moving. As his younger self, Danny Kornfeld deserves particular credit for developing a character that really does look as if he could grow up to become the older actor. And Julie Benko is quite powerful as Ruth Stern, the anti-Fascist agitator who marries one of the group’s non-Jewish members. The dialog has the occasional clinker and there are some simplistic lyrics, but Barry Manilow’s score is a surprise. There’s only one number — the Josephine Baker fantasy “We’re Goin’ Loco!” — that mirrors his pop hits. For the rest, he moves effortlessly through a variety of musical styles, including the operetta “Your Son Is Becoming a Singer, the musical joke “Hungarian Rhapsody #20” (which would be great for a men’s chorus) and the beautiful anthem “Stars in the Night.”

News of Cabaret: It's official Cabaret goes to Broadway! We still have to wait to know if Eddie will reprise his role there.
"Award-Winning ‘Cabaret’ Revival Plans Spring Broadway Bow"
The production opened in London with Eddie Redmayne in a starring role; the New York cast has not yet been announced but he is expected to join it.
By Michael Pauson, New York Times, July 11, 2023
Willkommen, bienvenue, Broadway!
“Cabaret,” the ever-popular (and portentous) musical set in a Berlin nightclub on the eve of the Nazis’ rise to power, will return to Broadway in the spring in a new production that has already won raves in London.
The producing team on Tuesday morning announced a plan to transfer the show to Broadway, and said it would open at the August Wilson Theater, where a revival of “Funny Girl” is scheduled to close Sept. 3.
The “Cabaret” producers did not announce any other details, but it is widely expected that Eddie Redmayne, the film star who played the nightclub’s Master of Ceremonies when this revival opened in London, will reprise the role on Broadway. The show’s other big role, Sally Bowles, the nightclub’s star singer, was initially played in London by Jessie Buckley; that role has not yet been cast in New York.
“Cabaret,” with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Joe Masteroff, originally opened on Broadway in 1966, and that production, directed by Hal Prince and starring Joel Grey, won eight Tony Awards, including for best musical, and ran for three years. Grey went on to star in a 1972 film adaptation that won eight Academy Awards, including one for Grey and one for his co-star, Liza Minnelli.
The musical was revived on Broadway in 1987, again with Prince directing and Grey as the Emcee. Then in 1998, a new production directed by Sam Mendes and starring Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson, came to Broadway; that production closed in 2004 and then returned in 2014 for another year, opening with Michelle Williams opposite Cumming.
This latest revival, directed by Rebecca Frecknall, opened in London in 2021, and won seven Olivier Awards, including one for best musical revival. Its run is continuing. The critic Matt Wolf, writing in The New York Times, called the production “nerve-shredding,” and said, “Frecknall pulls us into a hedonistic milieu, only to send us out nearly three hours later reminded of life’s horrors.”
The lead producers are Ambassador Theater Group, a British company that owns and operates theaters around Europe and the United States and has become increasingly active in producing on Broadway, and Underbelly, a British company closely associated with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
“Cabaret” will join multiple shows on Broadway this season that deal with antisemitism, among them “Just for Us,” a one-man show from the comedian Alex Edelman, which is now running, as well as “Harmony,” a musical by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman that is opening in the fall and “Prayer for the French Republic,” a play by Joshua Harmon, which is to open in the winter. Last season’s Tony-winning best play, “Leopoldstadt,” which closed earlier this month, and the winner of the Tony for best musical revival, “Parade,” which runs until Aug. 6, are also about antisemitism.

Barry Manilow prepares upcoming Broadway musical 'Harmony,' at long last
Tumblr media
NEW YORK
More than 30 years after the musical “Harmony” was written, it finally prepares to make its Broadway debut. The show was almost lost to history — like its subject.
Tumblr media
The historical show written by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman tells the true story of the forgotten German performing group The Comedian Harmonists. Many regard the six-man group as one of the first boy bands, as they recorded a string of popular albums and played sold-out venues around the globe.
Tumblr media
But at the height of their popularity, the Nazi party took control of Germany, and they were denounced for being degenerates. Three of the group’s members were Jewish, and possessing their music was considered a crime.
Tumblr media
Relegated to obscurity and word of mouth, Sussman learned of the group through a German-language documentary. After seeing it, he recalls running to a phone booth in lower Manhattan to call his writing partner about what he just saw.
Tumblr media
“I had never heard of them. And I thought, (Manilow) knows every song ever written. He knows every group that ever was,” Sussman told the Associated Press in a recent interview after a rehearsal for the show.
Tumblr media
Manilow was also unaware.
“Then we realized that’s the story,” Sussman said.
But that was half the battle, as information on the group was hard to come by. “The Nazis tried to annihilate them, and they did. You couldn’t find any records. You couldn’t look at any of their movies,” Manilow said.
Tumblr media
Though they made approximately a dozen films and released numerous recordings, most were confiscated by authorities and destroyed.
“It was illegal to own or play or sell the records, so people hid their 78s under their mattresses. And after the war, they began to emerge,” Sussman said.
While playing concert dates in Germany, Manilow visited a Tower Records store in Berlin to check out a major display.
Tumblr media
“There was a whole wall of Comedian Harmonists. It was like the Beatles. They were the Beatles. They were the Backstreet Boys. They were the first boy band. That’s how big they were,” Manilow said.
Tumblr media
While the show was written in the 1990s, Manilow states the long road to Broadway — including stops off-Broadway in New York City and La Jolla Playhouse in California — had little to do with finishing the show and more about finding the right person to bring it to the big stage.
Tumblr media
“Basically, it was ‘Harmony’ even in 1997 at the La Jolla Playhouse. Great reviews. Everybody loved it. And it wasn’t about the show, it was about the producers just couldn’t keep going. They couldn’t take it to New York,” Manilow said.
Tumblr media
Then Tony-Award winning theatrical producer Ken Davenport stepped in. “He delivered all the way,” Sussman said. Previews begin Oct. 18 at the Barrymore Theatre.
Tumblr media
The musical stars Sierra Boggess, Chip Zien and Julie Benko. The six Comedian Harmonists are Sean Bell, Danny Kornfeld, Zal Owen, Eric Peters, Blake Roman and Steven Telsey. The director is Warren Carlyle.
Tumblr media
Manilow and Sussman are hoping that audiences learn about the legacy of The Comedian Harmonists, and how their brand of entertainment paved the way for the acts that followed.
Tumblr media
Manilow and Sussman have worked together for decades with Manilow writing the music and Sussman dealing with lyrics, including the iconic hits “I Made it Through the Rain,” “Copacabana (At the Copa),” and “Hey Mambo.”

Wednesday, February 21, 2024PRESENTED BYA MESSAGE FROM GULFSHORE PLAYHOUSE:
The Gulfshore Playhouse Inaugural Season at the new Baker Theatre and Education Center! Two dazzling theatres. Seven fabulous productions. Anything Goes, Every Brilliant Thing, Dial “M” For Murder, The Lehman Trilogy, Noises Off, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, and Sweet Charity. Learn more.Good morning, Robert!
Monday night the Briefing was at opening night of The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers at New World Stages. Part interactive game show, part memoir, the show stars Marc Summers and is written by Alex Brightman with music by Drew Gasparini. At curtain call, Marc gave a heartfelt speech thanking everyone who made the show possible and pointed out people in the audience who changed his life and career path (many of them mentioned in the show). Marc's genuine kindness was exemplified by the fact that all of those people from his past showed up to support him. Also in attendance were Mike O'Malley, Brad Oscar, Alex Timbers, Lena Hall, Robin Russo (Marc's Double Dare co-host) and Melissa d'Arabian (Food Network Star winner). Following the performance was a party at Bryant Park Grill. GOT A TIP?
SETTING THE STAGE TODAY

First there was harmony.
"The full story of the lost singing group that inspired Broadway’s ‘Harmony’" by Broadway News' Ruthie Fierberg - "When Bruce Sussman first started writing the musical that would become “Harmony,” in the 1990s, there was only one historical resource about the Comedian Harmonists: the 1976 Eberhardt Fechner documentary about the German singing group, which had sparked Sussman’s interest in the group in the first place. Given that the doc was the only available reference, it is remarkable how much Sussman got right in the final musical. But, as with any stage adaptation, Sussman had to condense his material, and he also dramatized moments.
The Comedian Harmonists did not start off with the exact six members that eventually rose to fame — the six that were depicted as the original and final sextet in “Harmony.” In reality, it took more than a year (and the incorporation and ousting of multiple early members) to get to the perfect combination of six musicians: buffo Harry Frommerman, bass Robert Biberti, first tenor Ari Leschnikoff, second tenor Erich Collin, baritone Josef Roman Cycowski and pianist Erwin Bootz."
