Lydia was born an only child to Alexander and Hannah in Salem. Her family had always been small, consisting of only her, her parents and her maternal grandmother, Alison. She comes from a long line of wiccans, on her mother's side.
When she was born, her parents had decided not to raise Lydia as Wiccan, mainly due to her father not liking it. They wanted Lydia to have a normal life and not grow up with her head in the clouds like her grandmother, as her father would always say. This caused a riff between her parents and her grandmother and due to that Lydia never knew her grandmother when she was younger. As when she was a baby, her parents moved to Asbury.
At the age of eight, Lydia's parents were killed. The police claimed it was a shooting that her parents unfortunately got into the middle of. This was the first time that Lydia met her grandmother, since she was the only living relative that the young girl had and the older woman was more than happy to become the legal guardian of her granddaughter.
So once all the legal stuff was done, Alison moved to Asbury in order to raise her granddaughter. Alison would have preferred to take Lydia back to Salem with her, but with the young girl having her life in Asbury, she didn't want to cause her anymore stress.
It didn't take long for Alison to start teaching Lydia all about Wiccan practices, even going as far as pulling Lydia out of school in order to home school her. Lydia became fascinated with magic very quickly, using it as a great distraction as she mourned the loss of her parents. She would spend most nights hiding under her bedsheets, reading all about magic, casing spells, making potions, healing crystals, and all the Wiccan holidays.
Lydia spent a lot of her time helping her grandmother out at the magic store she owned, cleaning the shelves and putting away stock, but mainly she curled up in the corner reading.
As she got older, Lydia became a full time employee at the magic shop, as well as practicing wiccan with her friends, creating their own coven. It was at this point that she became interested in dating, however no woman she brought home was good enough for her and she began to feel like her grandmother was scared of letting Lydia leaving. It didn't help that Lydia herself was scared of the large commitment that came with dating.
Lydia spent her twenties still working for her grandmother, which helped her pay for her car as well as other adult responsibilities. When she wasn't working, Lydia was busing herself with friends and hobbies.
In her early twenties, Lydia became a godmother to her best friend's daughter, who she completely doted on. However, when the baby was only six months old, her best friend fell ill and only a year later she died. With the father out of the picture, and no other living relatives, as the godmother, Lydia adopted the baby.
Lydia raised the young girl as her own with the help of her grandmother. As soon as the young girl was old enough to understand, Lydia made sure to tell her she was adopted and all about her birth mother.
At thirty, Lydia's grandmother died from old age, leaving everything she owned to Lydia, including the shop.
Currently, Lydia still lives in the house she grew up in and running the shop her grandmother started. She's well loved within the community and does whatever she can to give back and help out.

Tolson Memorial Museum: Explore Huddersfield’s heritage
The Tolson Memorial Museum, also referred to as the Tolson Museum is located within Ravensknowle Hall, a Victorian mansion positioned on Wakefield Road in Huddersfield. The museum presents a vibrant and captivating depiction of Huddersfield and its inhabitants, spanning from ancient times to the contemporary era, through its unique collection. Within its premises, you can explore an array of intriguing artefacts, including Roman discoveries, textiles, an aviary, historical vehicles, exhibits related to the First World War, and much more.
The history of Ravensknowle, once encompassing farmland on the outskirts of Dalton in the Kirkheaton parish, dates back to 1832 when a portion of the Ravensknowle estate was acquired by a Huddersfield banker named Thomas Wilson. He erected a lodge at the entrance on Ravensknowle Road, a property that was later purchased by his nephew John Beaumont in 1850. Subsequently, John Beaumont, utilizing the architectural expertise of Richard Tress, a London architect, undertook the construction of Ravensknowle Hall (now Tolson Museum) between 1859 and 1862.
From 1862 to 1919, the estate remained within the same family lineage, transitioning from one relative to another. During the First World War, Ravensknowle Hall was owned and inhabited by Legh Tolson. The tragic deaths of his nephews, Robert Huntriss Tolson and James Martin Tolson, in the war, prompted him to offer the Hall and a portion of the surrounding grounds to the people of Huddersfield as a memorial, leading to the establishment of the museum.
For those with an interest in art galleries, the Tolson Museum boasts a wealth of heritage and collections to peruse. The museum continues to host events, workshops, family-oriented activities, and educational tours. Furthermore, a dynamic roster of special exhibitions centred around Huddersfield and its historical context enhances the museum’s offerings. The serene memorial garden located at the rear of the museum provides a pleasant retreat, catering to all age groups. A visit to the Tolson Memorial Museum and Ravensknowle Park promises an enjoyable family outing, complete with a playground, gift shop, and refreshments.

STUDIOS AND REHEARSAL SPACES
Introduction
In the evening and weekends the cheapest you will get is around £10 per hour as far as we know. During working hours it can be considerably cheaper.
Some places offer same day discounts so look out for that but don’t rely on it! Drummers, look out for solo slots and cymbal hire if you’ve got no equipment.
Many studios book up a week or two in advance during peak hours so try to book ahead or you’ll end up in the most expensive room far from home.
We recommend trying to do some song and lyric writing at home and fleshing out ideas in the rehearsal space. It really helps to play loud, with microphones, PA, proper drums and big amps ahead of performing live, so even if you’ve got all the gear at someones house, consider at least running through the set a few times at a practice space.
Pirate Studios Locations all over london 17 Lydden Road, Earlsfield, London, SW18 4LT Price: Variable depending on location, generally medium-expensive. They have good referral deals.

The next few days are spent busy, at the stables. After couple of days, Liam walks in, as I am tending to Brawny in the separate temporary shed, that I got made for the infected horses. I signal him to wait. I change out of my protective clothes and scrub before meeting him outside.
“Welcome back home! So, how did Lythikos treat you?” I know I am beating around the bush, when I am asking it. But I don’t want to hit him straight with the awkward question. I know he is equally in an uneasy position.
“Yes, all well.” He gives me an agonizing stare. “I had a talk with her.” He brings up the inevitable topic. “I think she did it out of desperation and jealousy.”
“It is alright Liam. She is not blind and not a child anymore. She can see where you are inclined.” I let out a sigh, “It’s difficult to read a woman’s mind. I feel sad for the manner in which we are parting ways. Part of growing up, I guess!”
Liam gives out a sigh too and then changes the subject, “Everything under control here?”
“Yes. I reached in time. There were two more horses showing similar signs. Got all three horses isolated. And vaccinated remaining ones.”
“You are good at your job. Even father seems to have blind faith in you, when it comes to vet skills.” He chuckles.
“Thank you.” I smirk thinking of king Constantine. It’s his inherent nature to always doubt and question everyone. “I have to report and update it to him later today. Let’s see what he has to say.”
Liam gives me a friendly pat, and we head to the palace for a quiet lunch together. I get a call from Max soon after we finish our meals. “It’s an emergency. I am sending you the address. Meet me in half an hour.” He sounds serious.
I drive down to the coffee shop, which he mentioned in his text. When I walk in, I find him sitting in the corner booth, his feet tapping on the floor nervously, and his blue eyes scanning the scene around, in a hope to find solution to the problem he is carrying in his mind.
“What’s wrong?” I ask settling down across the table.
“I don’t know. Bertrand doesn’t seem to be interested in giving me the whole story. He thinks I’m still his baby brother.” He rolls his eyes. “All I know is, that the crew we hired for our yacht for the Royal Regatta scheduled tomorrow, has ditched us.”
“It’s just a symbolic boat race and not an actual one with a pressure to win.” I try to lay down the facts.
“But you know Bertrand. He won’t leave any stone unturned to win it. Also, it’s king’s favourite event. He wants that Riley should bag the prize, so that she gets a chance to interact with the king. It is kind of gaining brownie points.
“Hmm." I ponder. "How many members do we need? Let’s count. You and I will be there.”
“You will do that for me?” he says, his eyes widening with a shine.
“I will. If you promise not to crack your stupid jokes during the event.” I warn him. “Who else can be roped in?”
“I don’t want to include anyone else. I don’t know what is wrong with House Beaumont and it’s difficult to explain to outsiders. So, I think just three of us. I hope we will be able to pull through. Will you be okay with that?”
“Yeah, I see no problem there. What about Bertrand?”
“ He is in a bad mood. Angry, sad, frustrated, all at the same time. He should be fine by tomorrow to give us a helping hand.”
We finish discussing all the minor details for the boat race in next hour and then walk out of the coffee shop.
The following day, at the Royal Regatta, I stand on the deck taking in the salty air.
Riley comes and stands beside me. “What are you looking at?”
“I just realised the actual count of suitors for the first time, by the number of boats, of course. I hardly know any of them. For me they are only the names I hear from the conversation with Liam. I should know at least this much, right?”
“Yes, you are his best friend and best friend should know it all.” She says it with a wink.
“Am I missing something?”
“Just that, may be, I am falling head over heels for your friend.” She grins.
“And you are revealing this to me and not him?”
“I don’t want to burden him more. He has too much to handle already. I know, being a crown prince, he cannot open up about his feelings for one particular suitor in the midst of the social season. So, I don’t want to tell him, just yet, lest he gets anxious and tries to spend more time with me. That would put him in a tricky situation.”
I sweep her in a big bear hug. “Oh, Brooks! I am so happy to know that.” I part away and look into her brown eyes, tears of happiness glinting in them. “He is so lucky to have you. That’s all he needed. Someone who understands him, his struggles, his responsibilities.”
I hug her back and whisper in her ears, “Let me give out a secret. He may also be sharing the same feelings.”
“I know.” She says gleefully looking up at me.
“Okay now let me help you enhance your knowledge about my competitors.” She rolls her eyes. “Let’s start from the right.” She points out to the boat lined up in extreme right to us.
The sight is full of colourful sails. Each of these boats have a flag representing their house. The one Riley pointed to, has a black flag with a silver owl on it.
Riley starts “That should be from the duchy of Castelsarreillan represented by Kiara Theron, the future Duchess.” Riley continues.
“Yes, the owl represents their house. Their family has intelligence and art running in their blood. Duke Theron is a very wise man and the Duchess is an artist.” I add on.
“So, you have met him?”
“Once.”
“Oh? just once?” Riley gives me a playful smile.
“Yeah.”
“Kiara is very smart, logical person and a linguist.” Riley elaborates. “Next to her should be her best friend’s boat.”
I observe purple flag with golden waves and a narwhal painted on it. “Portavira.” I blurt out.
“ I guess, it’s the only duchy with a sea port. Penelope Ebrim represents the house. Easy way to identify her is, you will find her talking about her poodles every now n then. You may like her.” She teases me. “She is an animal lover and she is sweet and kind.” She flashes that smile again.
I cut her, “Wait. Are you trying to set me up, Brooks?”
She lets out a laughter. “No, I better not. I can see where your interests lie.” She raises a knowing eyebrow at me, making me blush behind my tough skin.
“Let’s quiz you with the one with green flag.” Riley gestures at the next boat where a green flag with a pine tree on it, flutters.
“Madeliene, right?”
“Yes, the ambitious countess of Fydelia.” Riley fans out her hand. “You must be knowing all about her from Leo’s social season.” She pauses and then claps for the boat next to us. “ And that’s my dear friend Hana as our left side neighbour.”
A pink flag with purple orchids, furnishes Hana's boat. Just then, as on cue, Hana appears on the deck. “Hey there guys!” She waves out. “Time to greet the king at the harbour.”
“Lets go!” Riley jumps up excitedly.
“You proceed. I am better here, away from the crowd. I will wait for you to come back, and then we do our favourite thing together. Race!”
“As it suits you.”
“Just one question. How do you know so much in detail about all the houses in such a little time? A few months back, you didn’t even know where on earth Cordonia is,!”
Riley smiles wide, “Bertrand is my teacher, remember?” she says gazing up at the House Beaumont flag on our boat that shines with its silver sheen, a squid in the centre and the motto embroidered in blue, 'Depths to remember'.
“We didn’t talk about your friend’s, House Nevrakis, but I am sure you don’t need introduction there.” Riley speaks looking at the only boat to our left side.
I shake my head and make myself busy, untangling the wires of my earphones that I plan to put on, till Riley returns and the race begins. She shrugs her shoulder, “Bye! See you in a jiffy!”
“Bye!” I wave out to her and turn to the sea.
Before I could plug in some music, the fluttering of the Nevrakis flag catches my attention. The crimson flag has a flaming sword of steel on it. The motto shines in gold,
‘If you can breathe, you can stand.
If you can stand, you can fight.’
Just then a seagull flies high over the boat, crooning a song for the lonely sea.
I plug in my earphones and the song fills my ears and my mind,
‘Something’s gotten into you
You don’t really look at me the way you used to
And I’m hoping it ain’t true
Every single rumour that I’ve heard of you say……..
It’s time to move,
Fight or flight….
Fight or flight.’

Chapter 21
AU - TRR Liam x MC (Riley Taylor)
A/N - Set after the Tariq scandal is cleared. Liam ends his engagement to Madeleine and proposes to MC as per the original story, but Riley turns him down. This AU follows their life from then on.
I work in investigation and my best friend's husband is a body guard so apologies if this chapter turned out too ‘techy’, I tried not to make it like that and to keep it very brief while still trying to be accurate, although they do say write about what you know!

Liam is sitting at the long highly polished walnut table in the main conference room at the palace, he’s been locked in a meeting all morning with several of his advisors discussing budget cuts and he’s just about had enough. He’s welcome of the interruption when Bastien knocks on the door. His mind soon turns to concern however when the guard enters without waiting for an invitation. He looks up from his notes in surprise at the intrusion and sees the look on Bastien’s face, he knows immediately that something’s wrong. He rises from his seat and excuses himself as everyone around the table stands on ceremony with him. He follows Bastien down the hallway in silence to his study. He takes a seat at his desk as Bastien shuts the door firmly behind them.
“What’s wrong?” Liam asks as soon as the door is shut, knowing from the concerned look on Bastien’s face that this isn’t the time for pleasantries.
“Sir, don’t be concerned but I’ve had a call from Mara, they seem to have mislaid Lady Riley.”
“What?” Liam’s face creases in confusion. “What do you mean mislaid her? She not a wallet Bastien, how can you mislay her?” Bastien’s heart thumps wildly in his chest, he had hoped to avoid having to impart this news on his king, had hoped that Mara would have called him telling him that she had found Riley in a shop or cafe by now.
“They can’t find her sir. They stopped on the way to meet Drake and Duchess Olivia for lunch on Main Street. Somehow, and I don’t quite know how yet sir, Lady Riley went into a store and that was the last anyone saw of her. Her phone was found on the pavement with its screen smashed. There is no trace of her anywhere on the street or in the other shops. She’s not turned up to meet Drake.” Liam notices what appears to be shame and regret cross Bastien’s usually calm and competent face.
“What? How long ago did this happen?” Liam’s jaw sets ridged and Bastien notices a vein popping out on his strained neck. He bows his head avoiding the Kings steely eyes.
“About 30 maybe 40 minutes ago sir.”
“How has this happened Bastien? Where was Mara for Christ’s sake? You need to find her now!” Liam yells.
“I’m on it sir. She probably just went shopping and lost track of time, or ended up on a different street and got a bit lost. Don’t worry just yet, I’m sure it’s nothing. I need to go and makes some calls. I’ve got guards going to the loss location now. We’re getting the security footage for all along the street as we speak. If nothing turns up in the next hour I’m going to inform the police and set up a control centre in the conference room. Don’t worry Your Majesty, we’ll find her.”
“You had better Bastien.” Bastien nods and leaves the room, racing down to his office.
Liam’s phone silently buzzes in his pocket. He pulls it out, his heart hammering as he looks at the caller ID hoping it’s Riley. It sinks when he sees it’s Drake.
“Drake?”
“Li what the hell’s happening? Where’s Taylor?”
“I don’t know. Bastien’s just told me they can’t find her. Drake why is she not with you? I thought she was meeting you and Olivia for lunch? Where the fuck is she Drake?” As soon as Drake hears the usually calm Liam curse he knows that it’s serious.
“Shit Li, stay calm. We’ll find her. She has to be there somewhere. You know what she’s like, she probably saw a kitten and followed it and got lost or something. Me and Liv are going to stay here in case she turns up. Keep me updated yeah.”
“Yes of course, same goes for you too.”
“Yep sure thing buddy. Speak soon.”
Liam sits down on the couch in his study and puts his head in his hands, panic rising through him, adrenaline pumping through his veins making his hands shake. He stands, his legs trembling, and walks over to his desk, picking up the phone he presses the button for his assistant.
“Gabriella please dismiss the gentlemen in the conference room. Tell them something unexpected has come up. And cancel my meetings for the rest of the day. Please field any phone calls unless they are from Bastien, the police or...” his words catch in his throat. “Riley.”
2 hours later and there’s still no trace of where Riley disappeared to. Liam enters the conference room as Bastien’s team and plain clothes police officers are setting up phone lines and computers. A uniformed man walks over with Bastien, he bows and holds out his hand.
“Chief of Police, Officer Beckett. Pleased to meet you Your Majesty.” Liam shakes his hand. “I want assure you sir we are doing everything we can to locate Lady Riley. I have my best team on it and we will be working around the clock. The ports and airport are on high alert.”
Liam nods in response. “Bastien I want to stay here, I won’t get in the way. I need to know what’s going on.” It wasn't a request but a command.
“Very well sir. We are currently reviewing the security footage from the shops and the highways agency. We have a very narrow time frame in which she disappeared so we hope it will give us some results. A team of police officers are taking statements from anyone that we can identify who was in the vicinity at the time.” Liam nods his head in understanding. Bastien looks at the King gravely and lowers his voice. “I have an officer on the way to the Beaumont’s, we need to search Lady Riley’s room, see if anything’s missing, find out if she’s taken any clothes or personal effects, check if her passport is still there. I have asked an officer to be posted at the estate going forward until we have a clearer picture of what’s going on. We know that the letters and calls we recently identified were addressed to her there, I’ve spoken to the Duke of Ramsford and made him aware of the situation and he has agreed to allow us to place a tap on the phone line there. We need to be ready for the possibility of a ransom demand being sent. At the moment we have no lead on whether this is a planned attack by a known enemy of the crown or something else. Or if she’s gone of her own volition sir.”
“She wouldn’t do that Bastien.” Liam assures him.
“Sir at this point we can’t rule anything out. I have stationed guards at the restaurant she had planned to go to today in case she makes her way there, I have contacted Drake and Duchess Olivia they are on their way here. If you receive a call on your personal mobile phone from an unknown or unrecognised number don’t answer it and alert me immediately.”
Liam looks directly into his guards eyes. “Bastien you have to find her.”
“I know sir. I will.” He nods.
An hour later Drake and Olivia race into the conference room. Liam’s surprised as Olivia pulls him into an uncharacteristic hug. Drake fires questions at him. Liam holds up his hands.
“Drake slow down. I don’t know anything yet. Just that she was there one minute and gone the next. We have no ransom demands or contact from anyone claiming to be holding her.” He leads them over to the sitting area where they all perch nervously on the edge of the armchairs. They sit in silence as Olivia mindlessly drums her fingernails on the side table next to her. Like hail on a glass pane, the noise is as relentless as it is loud. Each click of the French polished nails on the table echoes the tumultuous thudding of all of their heart beats.
“Olivia!” Drake eventually snaps. “Quit it!” She glares at him, her face rigid with tension. As Drake looks at her he can’t help thinking that she seems to have aged a decade in the past few hours. She gets up and pours them all a cup of coffee from the pot on the low coffee table in front of them. She takes her cup, cradling it in her hands but not taking even one sip. She paces the plush carpeted floor back and forth asking the same questions that they’re all thinking but no one knows the answers to. Where is she? Why did she leave her phone? Why the hell was Mara not with her? What the fuck was she thinking going off on her own?
Waiting is easier for Drake than it is for the feisty Duchess. He’s had plenty practice while fishing. He leans back in his chair and closes his eyes trying to clear his mind of the intrusive thoughts that are creeping in. He knows Taylor wouldn’t go off on her own and not let him know she was safe, she would know how much he would worry about her. Olivia is firing her questions at an unresponsive Liam who’s engrossed in his laptop, scouring every known news website for any information that may have been leaked to them, reading every comment on Riley’s social media in the hope of finding a clue, continually refreshing his email in case a kidnapper tries to make contact that way.
As the productivity of the police and guards go on around them, time for the trio slows to a trickle, minutes and hours blend into each other. Eventually Bastien calls Liam over to where he is standing looking over the shoulder of one of his technical officers.
“Your Majesty I think you need you to see this.” He points to the image of the inside of a store displayed on one of the large computer screens set up on the table. Bastien then addresses his officer. “Lucas go and take five please.” The techie gets up wordlessly from his chair and wanders off to the coffee and pastries that the palace staff have set up along the far wall. Bastien takes his place pulling a chair over for Liam. He presses play on the footage and Liam’s heart leaps into his throat as he sees Riley on the screen.
“These are the last movements we see of her sir. Here she is entering the shop. She goes directly to this aisle, picks something off the shelf here and then we see her from the other camera angle.” He switches to another clip. “Here. She goes to the checkout clerk and pays with her credit card. She leaves the shop here. The cameras in the front of the shop are broken. We don’t see anything after she walks out of that door.” Liam nods not taking his eyes off Riley on the screen.
“Sir we have confirmed from the footage and with the store clerk what her purchase was. It explains why she wanted to make the purchase herself and why she wanted to go into the store alone.” Bastien pauses and takes a deep breath, he lowers his voice so only Liam can hear him.
“Your Majesty, Lady Riley purchased a pregnancy test.”
Liam’s head snaps to his guard as his eyes go wide.
“What! Are you sure?”
“Yes Sir. I’m sorry to be the one to have to tell you.”
Liam gulps audibly. “No, don’t be. Thank you Bastien. I’d rather no one else knows about this. No one Bastien, do you understand?”
“Of course Your Majesty. Lucas my digital investigator who enhanced the footage and Mara who spoke with the store clerk are the only other people who know.” Bastien can’t look at Liam as he says the next words. “Sir I hate to say it but we can’t rule out the possibility that this is the reason for her disappearance. It could be that she doesn’t want to be found at the moment, maybe she needed time to come to terms with whatever the result was.”
Liam closes his eyes and presses his fingers into them. He’s silent for a long moment. Thoughts swirl around his brain. He shakes his head but he can’t dislodge them. He wonders why she wouldn’t have told him about this; is she worried about how he would react. He wonders if she’s scared or excited at the prospect of becoming a parent. Maybe Bastien is right – would she be scared enough to run; to leave him alone carrying the burden of never knowing what happened to her. He can’t even begin to think about what his own feelings are on the subject, not with so much worry in his stomach about where she is. He addresses his guard with a certainty that he doesn’t quite believe.
“No. She wouldn’t do that. I can’t believe that she would do that. And we know from the time stamp that she text Drake after she left the shop. Why would she have done that if she was planning on leaving? And she wouldn’t leave her phone.” Liam rises from the desk.
“Have you contacted Jacob Henley?” He asks, not wanting to hear the answer, Liam wonders if she would have confided in Jacob rather than him and hopes to God that it’s not true. He can’t even imagine the pressure that Riley must feel at potentially carrying the heir to a country when she’s she’s not even married to its king.
“Yes sir.” Bastien responds, he merely shakes his head no as an answer. Liam understands and can’t quite decide if he’s relieved or not.
“I need to take a minute, let Drake know that I’m going to get some air. I’ve got my phone, please call me straight away if anything changes.”
“Yes sir.”
Liam leaves the conference room and walks with heavy legs to his study. So many hours have passed since Riley was last seen and they have no leads. Fear curls up inside him and clings to his ribs, settling uncomfortably in his chest. He feels powerless. The not knowing is torturing him, thoughts of what might have happened creep into his mind, images of the love of his life being hurt or alone, crying or in pain. He walks over to his cabinet and takes out a decanter of scotch, he pours a large measure into a crystal glass and downs it in one gulp immediately pouring another. He takes his glass over to the leather couch and sits down heavily. He rubs his hand over his face, trying to rub away the thoughts that torment his mind. He sits alone staring blankly at the palace gardens beyond his window for some time until there’s a quiet knock at his study door. He ignores it, knowing if it was Bastien he would have called him or burst into the room already. The knocking starts up again a moment later before the door knob slowly twists and the door creeps open. A sombre looking Drake peers around the door frame.
“Hey Li, ok if I come in?” He asks with uncertainty in his voice.
“Yeah sure Drake.” Liam sighs. “Help yourself to a drink.” He lifts his glass to his friend. Drake makes his way over to the cabinet and chooses a decanter of whiskey. He pours a large measure and takes a seat next to Liam on the couch.
“You ok?” Drake kicks himself as soon as he’s said the words out loud.
“Not really no.” Liam shakes his head. And Drake winces at his own stupidity.
“Yeah, stupid question. Sorry. I don’t really know what to say.”
“It’s ok. You don’t need to say anything. Thanks for just being here.”
Drake shakes his head. “I wouldn’t be anywhere else. You know that. Olivia is staying over, she’s claimed a guest bedroom, sent one of your staff out for clothes and toiletries. Although I don’t know that anyone will do much sleeping. And Maxwell has not stopped texting me. He tells me he’s having a bit of a breakdown, although I’m hoping that’s what he meant and it was just his phone that autocorrected it to breakdance, the thought of him dancing at a time like this seems wholly inappropriate. But then again it is Maxwell we’re talking about here. He’s keeping me updated with the goings on at the Beaumont Estate through emojis.” Liam can’t even muster a smile for his best friend.
“Is there anything happening in there?” Liam gestures towards the direction of the conference room.
“Everyone seems to be busy but they’ve not given us any kind of update.” Liam nods. “Don’t worry Li, we’ll find her. She’ll be ok. She’s got to be. She’s probably just lost. She’ll be back before you know it with some grand story about how she lost track of time after finding an injured puppy and how she nursed it back to health with the help of a group of ragamuffin street kids, finding common ground by singing show tunes, or you know, something equally as farcical.”
“I hope so Drake. I can’t live without her.” Liam’s voice is barley a whisper. Drake knows exactly how Liam feels, his own heart echoes the same sentiment. The two men sip their drinks in silence for a long while until Liam eventually breaks it.
“Drake.” He takes a deep shaky breath. “Bastien said that she might have chosen to leave. Do you...do you think that she might have left because she wanted to?” Drake can see his best friend is holding back tears. Drake quietly contemplates the question before answering honestly.
“No Liam, I don’t think Taylor would do that. And if she did want to leave she would have told you first, probably in a big dramatic argument knowing her.” He smiles thinking of how Riley would never let anything go. She’s steely and determined, headstrong and impetuous. “She wouldn’t have wanted you to worry like this. She knows how much you love her. She wouldn’t leave her phone, she’s glued to the damn thing most of the time.” Drake smiles softly at the memory of arguing with Riley about having her phone permanently glued to her hand, remembering her asking him to take a dozen photos of her in the same God damn pose for Pictagram, how he wishes she was here badgering him to take her picture now. “And she would have definitely told Maxwell. She wouldn’t let people down.”
“Then that means that something’s happened to her Drake. Which is worse.” Liam’s voice breaks. “Someone’s taken her. I don’t know what to do Drake. I feel so useless.” A tear slips out of the kings eye and runs down his cheek. He wipes it away angrily.
“We don't know that Li. And it’s ok to have emotions. It’s normal to let them out from time to time you know. We can stay in here for a while.” Liam drains his glass and puts it down on his desk. He clears this throat and fixes his face into a much practised and disciplined unemotional façade.
“No. I need to get back in there and see what’s happening.”
He stands and Drake sees his friend transform in front of his eyes; brave on the outside, leading from the front regardless of personal cost. Everyone else has to see him as flawless, the polished version of himself to inspire confidence. Whilst Drake knows him as a friend he can’t help but respect him as a king. He doubts that the citizens of the country Liam reigns over could ever comprehend how much he has given up for them; he’s always the king that they need, stoic and strong. Drake sees the man underneath the crown, the man afraid of not being enough, of failing in his duty, of his purpose being unfulfilled. He sees a man that loves truly and deeply with his whole heart. A heart that’s in the process of breaking. Drake knows, because Drake’s is in the process of breaking too.

jenna coleman, cisfemale, she/her, witch, bookshop owner. | i think i spotted adelaide beaumont out in the town square. isn’t that the thirty year old who’s been around vernon all her life ? from what i see they seem to be fairly valiant and reliable but they can also be very acerbic and resentful. when i see them i think of lace stockings, self-stirring cups of tea and vintage books.
born and raised in vernon, adelaide was the youngest daughter in a family of well to do witches. while she wasn’t a rebellious as her older sister --- adelaide never quite warmed to the idea of being the helping hand her parents atolled for.
often, her childhood was spent following after arabella, watching in amusement and delight as her sister defied the grain and did what she wanted. very easily and very quickly, addie came to adore her older sister, and consider her more of a mother than their own.
there wasn’t anything addie wouldn’t have done for bella --- whether it was burying a dead body, murdering a man, breaking her out of prison, or making sure she had food in her fridge.
bella was the one who taught addie everything she knew about magic. half her skill came from watching her sister, learning from her sister, and wanting to be just like her sister. ( addie often says she wouldn’t be half the person she is if it wasn’t for bella )
which is why it plainly, and easily, broke her heart to see her sister lost to dark magic. she felt quite powerless, unable to help her sister, unable to do anything really --- to the point where addie just... tried to do her best, tried to support her sister where she could
each time bella rolled back into town like a hurricane, addie would try and help her get clean --- to get back to the sister she knew and loved, often to no avail
but try as she might, addie couldn’t disconnect from her sister. she just couldn’t. it was addie and bella against the world, no matter what. and it always would be
as she grew older, she developed a deep fascination for books, history and all things similar. she eventually opened up a book shop here in town --- called black cat books. its your one stop shop for a good novel, some tarot readings, or even a spot of magic if you’ve got the money to burn
seven years prior, addie fell in love for the first time. it was the deep, all consuming fairy-tale type of love. despite what was happening with her sister, addie was convinced maybe, now, she’d be able to make a family of her own.
two years passed when the pair decided to get married --- and addie finally felt as if her life was making sense: only for tragedy to completely and utterly strike
learning her sister had slept with her fiancee was something that ruined addie. the sweet, hopeful girl she was? destroyed. gone. completely blown to smitheerns. her ability to trust was practically non-existant.
confronting her sister for what she’d done was apocalyptic --- she told her sister that she was dead to her, that she wanted nothing to do with her, and that it was best she leave town now, before she made arabella do so
confronting her fiancee was ruining. she threw the engagment ring at their head, their clothes into the street and said the same thing to them --- it was best they leave town before, before she made them do so
staying in vernon after that, was too hard. addie packed some clothes, hired help for the shop, and took off to paris for a year.
in paris, while some of her heart healed, it was still fractured. she wasn’t as riddled with pain while there, learning the language, working in an old magic shop. she meaningless affairs, breaking hearts left right and centre, because she was unable to open herself up like she had as a young woman
eventually, addie returned home and took over black cat books once more. she’s been back for the past four years, but considers her year away more of... an extended vacation, rather than a serious attempt to leave
she’s incredibly bitter. rough. rude and coarse. her words are always laced with acid and she usually doesn’t get along with anyone or anything. she’s still paying for the mistakes of her sister and ex-fiancee, and is likely, to never get over it
that being said, she’s incredibly steady when the time calls for it. she’s almost the direct opposite to her sister --- whereas bella is quite chaotic, addie is steadfast. she doesn’t blink, even when perhaps, she should
she’s loyal, sometimes to a fucking fault --- hence why she stood by her sister even in her darkest days of magic use.
all in all, addie’s just trying to get back. she’s got bills to pay and a life to lead. everything else is just noise she doesn’t need.

PHOT303 - Mileage Mary Vary - 4/3/2020
I decided to swap out the Mamiya 7ii that didn’t work, for one that finally did! But this shoot didn’t go without an issue. Now that I had a working 7ii to use, I was excited to see what I was going to create. I decided to take it upon myself, to head back to using expired film to see that I could create. I have had very good success with expired Fujifilm stocks, and loaded up the 7ii with a roll of Fujifilm Superia 400, which expired in 2012. With this in mind, I over exposed the film by a stop by metering the film at 200 iso.
Tumblr media
A Citroen C3 is parked at Morley Court. This is one of my favourite locations in Plymouth, as it feels so removed from Plymouth as a whole. It is a housing estate that is plonked in the centre of town, towards the end which is lower on the social/economic scale. I find it interesting that the location reflects on the conditions of the vehicles, as the lower the perceived class of the area, the condition of the vehicles worsen and the age of the vehicles also increase. This would mean that the individuals on lower incomes, can’t necessarily afford to have a newer vehicle and keep it in a better condition. I find it interesting to shoot in a variety of locations that seem to justify this by documenting what lies within the specific areas.
Tumblr media
A Volkswagen Golf Estate MK4 is parked in the car park behind Lucky Star, which is on Raleigh Street. The whole area is an expansive network of grubby post-war buildings, which here are the backs of business and extractor fans. The particular Golf isn’t in the best of conditions, with missing wheel trims and an array of dents and scratches. I fell that this car manages to reflect on the nature of the surroundings. The 7ii also manages to pick up the small details, like the exhaust tube on a building to the left, forcing out a plume of blue smoke.
Tumblr media
The eight generation Honda Civic was a far cry from previous iterations in terms of it’s design. Just like the MK3 Golf, it was a more more rotund compared to it’s earlier flavours. This immediately caught my eye, as the Civic managed to match the facade of Costless. I also did like the ‘Cost Less’ managed match the theory of the Vehicle Scrappage Scheme being used to boost the economy after the 2008 Financial Crisis. Again, the Mamiya manages to pick up so much detail within the scene, when the items within the shop itself. I also enjoy how I compose my work with this camera, as it does put me back into the mindset of capturing the scene, rather than just the vehicle being the main focus. Speaking of which, I didn’t even stop down past F4, which is wide open for the 80mm. F4 is a fairly wide aperture for 6x7, and can create some shallow depth of field once you get closer to the subject. yet as these distances, there is some subtle fall off between the foreground and the cars that are now in focus.
Tumblr media
Something which used to be a familiar sight, a Toyota Carina. I remember seeing rather a lot of these when I was little, and they have disappeared from out road since, and most likely due to the Vehicle Scappage Scheme. It is hard to believe that this particular model was registered back in 1989, so it had been on our roads for over 30 years now. Yet, it manages to look rather well for it’s age, only really with some discolouration and some dodgy panel angles. This particular vehicle was parked outside a carpet shop in a side road that runs parallel to Ebrington Street. It was only later that it was pointed out the ‘Sustainability Award’ on the billboard above the Carina, which also coincides with the Scrappage Scheme. Just after I took this photograph and took the image of the Fiesta and the Mini, the potential owner came out of the building and was wandering his car and looking at me, almost inspecting. I assume he wasn’t all too pleased I was photographing his ancient Toyota.
Tumblr media
A bloody Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow! I have seen this whilst walking near White Friars Lane, which runs adjacent to Beaumont Road. The old Roller juxtaposes the newly built housing, yet almost manages to mix well into the scene. The Silver Shadow exudes high class motoring, with leather, walnut and chrome spilling from all areas. Whilst they were pricey purchases when they were new, they have depreciated so much that they’re almost affordable now...until it goes wrong or needs a service and then the bills start to add up, and the purchase of the vehicle becomes the cheapest part. There is also a noticeable, yet small amount of light leak on the lower right portion of the frame. During the shoot, I noticed that winding on the film didn’t feel entirely right. It felt as if it wasn’t winding as it should, and as I wound the roll to finish it, and opened up the back, I noticed that the roll wasn’t as tight as it should be, and was noticeably fatter. I suspect that this was due to the age of the film, and a potential comparability issue between the film and the spool that was left in the 7ii when I collected it. This can happen with 120 film and sometimes there is an issue, despite this being the first time I had encountered the issue.
Tumblr media
Here you can see the extent of the damage from the loose roll, with some light leak and fogging onto the last frame. This is the most affected image, but it is recoverable just by cropping. This photograph of a Nissan 300ZX advertising a window tinting company immediately looks like something Tom Westbury would have taken, with similar tones and composition. I am not sure how the 7ii does it, but the vertical distortion is always well corrected and always seems to by straight. It makes me wonder that all those times I wrote about Westbury’s work and the post production, it could have very well just been done in camera. I suspect that as 6x7 is such a large negative, it is easier to get the vertical lines straight as they should. The 300ZX is also an interesting vehicle, as it is a part of Nissan’s Z line of sports cars which also seemed to take a design change compared to the previous models. They are also a rare vehicle in this day and age, with many being molested by tuners or for the very few, kept nicely. I have never personally seen this car move, and this would be because it is currently SORN. With a quick check with the Government database, this is a 1990 model and was first registered in 2004, making this a grey import from Japan. This particular ZX is in a state of disrepair, with faded paint and a variety of dents and scratches. It also features some exhausts that the Channel Tunnel would be jealous of and some hideously dated alloys.
At last! A successful roll of film that resulted in some shots that I am proud of. It has been a long time since I had shot something and felt good about it. For a long time, I had become estranged from what I had shooting, and in all honesty, didn’t entirely enjoy what I was shooting for PHOT301. It wasn’t what I had envisaged and I am only just starting to get on my feet in regards to how I am making my work. And this is mainly down to using the Mamiya 7ii, as it puts me in the mindset of creating work and in it’s outcome, something that I really enjoy. The experience of using the Mamiya is great, and I cannon wait to see what else I can create this medium format beast. Yet I would like to be able to use different lenses, like the 65mm F4.

Swansea Castle  Swansea  Glamorgan  South Wales.
I made a quick visit to Swansea Castle the remains of which are in the centre of the city during my tour of south Wales in May 2017.
***********************************************************
Swansea Castle stands on a clifftop, below which the river Tawe originally flowed, and its position was strategic: it commanded the lowest crossing of the river, the main east-west route in south Wales, and a good harbour.
Swansea Castle's history was a turbulent one: it suffered in many Welsh raids, and changed hands many times. It was a Norman castle first mentioned in 1116 as being attacked by the Welsh. It was established by Henry I's friend Henry de Beaumont, first earl of Warwick, as the seat of administration of the marcher lordship of Gower, which Henry bestowed on him in about 1106. This first castle was of motte and bailey type, and nothing of it remains above ground. The west side of its deep ditch has been excavated to the north of the present remains. It was rebuilt in stone on the same site, probably after being razed by the Welsh in 1217. Nothing remains above ground of this stage either, but the west side of the curtain wall has been found, together with a mural tower. To the south-west of this small castle, called the 'Old Castle', a large roughly rectangular outer bailey was walled in stone late in the 13th century.
The 'New Castle', of which the present-day remains were part, lay in its south-east corner, built on the site of an earlier graveyard. This castle dates from the late 13th to early 14th century, by which time Edward I's pacification of Wales had deprived it of any military importance. It continued as an administrative center, but at a reduced level. Its holders, then the de Braoses, preferred to live at Oystermouth Castle, and inevitably decline set in. Stripped of their usefulness, the various gates and towers of the bailey were sold off in the early 14th century.
The visible remains consist of the north and south blocks, probably the work of William de Braose III, connected by a short stretch of much-altered curtain wall. The curtain wall originally continued up Castle Bailey Street on the west, and west from the north block to enclose a roughly rectangular area, with an entrance on the west side. The well-preserved south block, which occupied most of the south side of the castle, is the most spectacular part, with its picturesque arcaded parapet on top of the outside walls. Two large windows on the south side are the windows of the first floor hall, and below them are the narrow windows of three barrel-vaulted chambers. In the angled wing to the east was a sub-basement with great battered walls, from which there was access to the river. On the first floor was a solar, or private chamber, reached by steps on the west side. At the west end of the block is a spectacular circular garderobe tower standing to its full height, and in the south-east angle is a small turret with an arrowslit.
The small rectangular tower to the north has been much altered in post-medieval times, but retains a few original features, such as cross arrowslits. On the ground floor are three vaulted chambers, with four rooms above them inserted in the late 18th century when the block was turned into a debtor's prison. It had probably been used as a prison for a long time before. Other usable parts of the castle had very heterogeneous uses at the beginning of the 19th century - as a town hall, poor-house, a new market house, store cellars, a blacksmith's and other shops, a Roman Catholic chapel (in the hall) and a dovecote.
