"Could be a surprise hit", "Would be a short-sighted move" - Sunderland target 27 y/o - verdict
Sunderland could be in for a busy week as the transfer window draws to a close because Phil Parkinson seems determined to add to the two signings he has already made this month.
Having reinforced both attack and defence through the additions of Kyle Lafferty and Bailey Wright it now seems that his attention has turned to midfield, targeting Will Vaulks and Ollie Norburn as the loan move for Greg Docherty seems to have stalled.
The Black Cats have reportedly submitted an enquiry for Shrewsbury’s Norburn, who has scored three goals this season but could provide the attacking threat from midfield that Parkinson seems to be looking for, having made 16 goal contributions last term.
It is interesting to see how he would adjust to playing for a big club like Sunderland, though, having only featured in the lower leagues so far in his career.

With that in mind, our team of Football FanCast writers have assessed his suitability to the current squad, and whether he would be a worthwhile signing as the team targets promotion.
James Beavis
“Looking at Ollie Norburn’s career to date, it appears as though he is nothing more than a run-of-the-mill League One level midfielder.
“He could prove to be an important signing for Sunderland over the course of the rest of the season should he sign before the deadline given his experience in this division – he’s scored 12 goals in 58 games – but should Phil Parkinson’s men achieve promotion this term then where would that leave Norburn?
“Having never played above League One it would be difficult to see him being a regular starter for the Mackems in the division above, and therefore he would be nothing more than a short-term addition.
“This would be a short-sighted move by Sunderland.”
Billy Meyers
“I’m not sure if this is the signing Parkinson should be making in his hunt for a goalscoring midfielder.
“While Ollie Norburn has a wealth of experience under his belt in the lower leagues, Sunderland must aim higher than a man who has netted just 30 goals in 246 career appearances for Shrewsbury, Bristol Rovers, Tranmere Rovers, Macclesfield, Plymouth Argyle and Guiseley.
“Also, at 27 years of age, this wouldn’t represent a long-term option for the Black Cats, but more of a quick-fix – though even that would require Norburn getting off to a quick start at the Stadium of Light.
“All in all, I think someone younger, with a slightly better track record and perhaps a bit of experience playing above League One would be a better option for the Wearsiders – especially if Parkinson wants to achieve promotion to the Championship, in which case Norburn could be in his thirties by the time that happens.”
Someone’s got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?
Harry Sherlock
“This seems like one that could be a surprise hit for Sunderland. Norburn is highly-rated by his manager, Sam Ricketts, who made him captain after taking over at Shrewsbury.
“Indeed, speaking in 2019, he said:
“Ollie is a player whose attitude I love. I love his passion, how he goes and wins second ball.
“The hardest thing is now having to learn when he has to stay on his feet more.
“I still class him as a young player with huge potential and I love his attitude which is why I made him captain.”
“Those quotes actually came after Norburn was sent off, which speaks volumes as to how he is viewed at his current club.
“Add into that the fact that he has scored 14 goals for the club from midfield in his career and one sees that this could be a shrewd move from the Black Cats.”
Kealan Hughes
“Norburn may not have a glamorous career behind him but his history does show that he has had to work hard to earn the right to play in League One and such characteristics are exactly what Sunderland should be looking for.
“Players with determination to work their way back into the Football League after dropping out and excelling while doing so are worth their weight in gold, and that means his arrival could have a big impact on and off the pitch.
“In terms of footballing ability, his attacking threat means he offers something different to George Dobson and Max Power – who have contributed three goals between them – and such a variety could prove important as the Black Cats come up against a variety of opponents in the rest of their promotion campaign.”
Meanwhile, Sunderland fans have been embroiled in a discussion about an important aspect of the season so far.
