He doesn't quite understand the purpose of what Nikolai does.

He sits quietly in the pews, the lights filtering through the stained glass window beaming down at the altar- all while Grimsley leans by the doorway, hesitant to enter through the doors of a God.

The chapel is empty, and service has ended hours ago. All that is held is a private session of prayer, between Arceus and his most devoted.

But he does as he's promised, no matter how lonely; in exactly an hour, he prays quietly, occasionally kneeling and standing, sometimes singing a song of praise-

The singing had initially surprised him, but he makes no comment of it.

His own mother had done the same years ago, Grimsley's hand in her's, and Little Cheri in another arm.

"In this exact chapel too," He mumbles.

"Sorry, did you say something?"

Nikolai has turned around, uncharacteristically gentle in his expression; he always seemed to be different in this place.

"No, nothing, just-"

He checks his Xtransceiver.

He is not eager to play babysitter for too long, no matter how close the chapel is to the "home" that the league had arranged to house the region's most dangerous criminal,

But..

"It's time to go."

"Already?"

For someone who has lived so long, who has seen it all and been through what he could not fathom, who has lost his home and his family- to have something he could cling onto, to find solace in..

"I'll get you some prayer beads they're selling outside the chapel. The chapel monastery makes them. Proceeds go to a retirement home at the Village Bridge."

Nikolai's eyes lit up.

"And, uh, I guess a little wood carving. Of, um, Arceus?"

"Oh, that is perfect,"

He never smiles, and there is no change in tone from how he usually speaks- but he glows a little with excitement.

He seemed human.

"I can arrange a small shrine dedicated to Him in my home, in my bedroom. I will be able to pray to Him, even when I am not in the chapel,"

"But don't you do that already? I mean,"

He looks around.

"Genuinely, no offense, but why do you need to-"

"It is not that I need to. Do not let other believers tell you otherwise, that He will only listen to those who praise and worship Him in His home,"

When he stands, Grimsley can't help but shudder at the sight of his new fixation- a strange rock with a foreboding spirit, delivered to him by Grimsley himself under special instructions from a champion of another region.

But Nikolai holds onto it like a child would to their favorite doll.

"I only request to be taken here to feel closer to them. I used to help in services. I would often sing in a choir, but I would also give the offerings,"

His hold on the Odd Keystone tightens.

"It was a community activity, for the villagers to gather together to thank Him for his blessings."

Grimsley heard of such, even if he himself never felt accepted by the community here.

He didn't fully understand, much less to relate with how Nikolai looked forward to going to the chapel every week- but he didn't need to.

Him, and by extension, the league, knew that much.

He guides Nikolai outside of the chapel and does as he promises, taking his wallet out to stuff a few bills into the donation box by the entrance. He spots a stall selling handmade prayer beads, and another stall selling small, wooden statues depicting the chapel's idol.

As they leave together, from the corner of the chapel, a figure manifests from the shadows, dainty white gloves concealing the claws that held onto her hand fan.

"Taken prisoner once again- but they're much nicer than that bad man you worked for before, aren't they?"

She laughs to herself.

"Be patient, my child. I know it may hurt- but He has a plan, and you will be free from your sins and your pain,"

In the darkness of the chapel, the devil herself begins to weep.

"Please. Wait a little longer, my little dove."

🧶 Quick Guide to Blight / Blur

What is Pokemon Blight/Blur?

Blight/Blur is a rewrite of Pokemon BW and BW2 written by @antihibikase; Blight refers to BW (White, Upright), and Blur refers to BW2 (Black, Reversed). Blight/Blur and its arcs are named after the major and minor Arcana.

The story focuses specifically on Blur (BW2), as the events of Blight are explored through a series of flashbacks.

Where can I read Blight/Blur?

Currently, you can read the ongoing fic at ao3 or on tumblr.

There are no differences between versions outside of spacing. The tumblr version is posted on my writing blog, @antihibikase2.

What is Blight/Blur about?

Blight/Blur follows the events of BW/BW2 with some changes- both protagonists are present, and Team Plasma's goal stretches beyond the supposed liberation of Pokemon and the eventual subjugation of the region.

There's larger emphasis on the legends; specifically, the dragon, the heroes, and the party that accompanied the heroes- as well as how these characters from the past affect the ones in the present.

Additionally, while characters from other generations/regions are specified, and may appear as major characters, Blight/Blur specifically only focuses on Unova's cast.

Currently, a masterpost is in the works; but you can find most of the things about the verse either in @antihibikase-archive (under the tag BW/BW2 Rewrite - Blur / Blight) or @antihibikase (under the tag blight/blur).

Are there any content warnings?

The main ones are death and religion- Blight/Blur has many religious themes (particularly catholicism) and symbolisms.

Additionally, certain drabbles written under the story's tags in my writing blog dabble into surreal imagery and dissociation.

Is everything in your main and/or writing blog canon to Blight/Blur?

Not necessarily! Some of them were written before Blight/Blur was changed/established, some of them are just dabbling in ideas that aren't part of canon, etc.

12 / 28 - Happy Birthday to The Cherished, Cheren Slater!

"Everyone has a different dream; search for your life's purpose."

Started this as early as the third of December (Cheren Descante's birthday!) because I don't know when or how hard artblock will hit- and I don't want to make anything less for my skrunkly who has been in my brain since last year ...

I couldn't copy-paste the Cheren's Card text with the colorless icon, so I settled for using a white heart instead, since it's one of Slater's motifs!

Additionally, the background is reused from my Mutual Rotting window art; it's a fitting background regardless, since the buildings outside may or may not represent the buildings of Aspertia or Castelia. <3

Usually I only slightly alter the designs of the guys in my verse, so they're still recognizeable; even characters like Hilda and Bianca (complete outfit overhaul) retain their hairstyles, while Cheren (who has the biggest design change) retains some aspects of his design (the ahoge, the hair flaps, the pin).

Shauntal is a character that I really wanted to have a complete design change with the exception of her palette, since I had a big idea for her! Aside from being Hoennian (Filipino) like a couple of other Blur/Blight guys, I wanted to base her off Maria Clara- the parody of a "perfect Filipino woman" by Jose Rizal, a writer in the Philippines.

Though, Shauntal is also slightly a parody of Jose Rizal herself- she studied medicine and practices her faith, but overall, that's where the similarities end!

She's a silly novelist who is smarter than her whimsical personality lets on- and she takes Bianca under her wing to assist her with writing books about the rediscovered legends of the parties of Truth and Ideals.

A group of friends who, two years ago, journeyed the Unova region together; however, an undisclosed incident at the Pokemon League has changed their lives forever. In the absence of their Hero of Truth, they have decided to seek their own paths.

Hilbert Blackburn - An earnest youth from Nuvema Town, and Unova's Hero of Truth. His current whereabouts are unknown, as he's fled the region with Reshiram. Not many people, besides his secretive friends, seem to know the real him- outside of the fact he was very honest about his feelings.

Cheren Slater - Aspertia City's new gym leader, and the trainer school's teacher. He holds the truth to Hilbert's disappearance and what happened at the league that day, but refuses to share. The traveling companion and mentor of the Aspertia Trio.

Bianca Alabaster - Assistant to Professor Juniper and Fennel, and a protege of Lenora and Shauntal. She has a lot on her plate, particularly with investigating the legends of the dragons and exploration of the dreamworld. She has a keen eye for seeing the truth beneath the surface.

Hilda Weiss - A battle prodigy of Nimbasa City and the Battle Subway's most beloved regular, who had started her journey four years prior to the other three; as a result, she's the most experienced, and is considered an Ace Trainer. Somewhat cynical and grounded, but holds all her friends close to her heart.
